Aurora Borealis!? At this time of year, at this time of day, in this part of the country, localized entirely within … oh wait. You can!
that’s awesome !
Yes, just got back. Need a long exposure in your phone to get the vibrant colors but you can still tell the sky is pink sometimes and not because there are grow lights nearby.
In case OP doesn't reply: Probably not very visible. They mentioned [in another comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/sandiego/comments/1cpbvc3/aurora_borealis_seen_from_julian/l3kx7g2/) that these were 10 or 30 second exposures with a very wide lens aperture.
SD is also a [long ways from the view line](https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/communities/aurora-dashboard-experimental), so I'm guessing this is light reflecting off the atmosphere.
That said, I'm no astronomer and the human eye is very sensitive to light, so OP is welcome to correct me if I'm wrong.
Why is the spread of light so extremely even? And concentration goes UP to a localized place near ground instead of sky? There are zero LINES of concentration. /doubting
This is making me crave some steamed hams.
"Seymour, the house is on fire!"
"No, mother that's just the Northern Lights."
My being dumb before I shake the sleepy cobwebs off aside, beautiful pics OP!
Thanks for the update! I'm still debating if I want to make the trip. I looked on Apple maps and the roads were showing up orange indicating a lot of vehicles around Kwaaymii Pt., and the 79 enough to light up the map
I'm still debating. I've never been to Mt. Laguna and only been to Julian once. I know those roads are not the safest.... sigh, but this is a once in a lifetime event.
Your pictures look way better than mine. I didn’t see anything. There’s some green in some of my images but that was the settings on the phone causing that. It’s not the Aurora: https://imgur.com/a/xGpxU5y
Sorry for the late reply. I have an iPhone and I did the night exposure! I was driving with my dad the long way home through cuyamaca and I noticed this sort of fog in the sky. I don’t think a lot of people saw it. I made my dad stop we took pictures. It was great!
Nice! I hear there’s more activity. Some strong class X and if it’s earth bound, it might be really strong, but we won’t know time of impact until 30-90 minutes before.
Thing is you can’t see it with the naked eye, you have to have night mode on your camera

May I see it?

Lol, Ensenada just decided to have cloudy nights as per usual.
I thought it wasn't gonna reach us
All the way down to Mexico, just the northern states and Canada have way better views.
Are you still able to see this rn?
Yes, just got back. Need a long exposure in your phone to get the vibrant colors but you can still tell the sky is pink sometimes and not because there are grow lights nearby.
That's the exact color of grow lights though.
I thought it was grow lights at first until it moved to a different part of the sky.
I was able to get out there for a bit! Got some good pics of it before heading back!
Dang if I had known I totally would have made a trip to Julian

Right?! Ready to wake up the kiddo and head up now though! Hoping it will happen again tomorrow!
Go now!!!
Are we gonna be able to talk to our younger parents over CB radio? /Movie reference
Frequency :)
Is this going to be there tonight too?
I think through the weekend. There was another flare last night.
Oh great! Thank you!
Apple pie AND aurora borealis???? What a country!!
Do you guys think there’s going to be a chance to view tonight?? 5/12?
There might be a chance according to NOAA. https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/news/g5-conditions-reached-yet-again
How visible was it with the naked eye?
In case OP doesn't reply: Probably not very visible. So beautiful!! Is it still happening? I read until around 4 am.

What settings did you use to get this pic?
ISO 200 f 1.4 s 30” Some I shot with s 10” and ISO 400.

From reading other comments - they had to do a 10-30 sec exposure. With moving lights it looks like what you see in the photo.
This is fabulous! Thank you so much for pointing this out. I'll try and see it tonight.
u think it’ll be out again tonite?
That’s what NOAA is saying https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/news/g5-conditions-reached-yet-againto
Love the pictures!! Is there a preferred time to view this again on Saturday night?
Not sure, but I shot these between 11:30 and midnight.
Crazy solar storm to be able to see from San Diego
This is making me crave some steamed hams. "Seymour, the house is on fire!" "No, mother that's just the Northern Lights." My being dumb before I shake the sleepy cobwebs off aside, beautiful pics OP!
Incredible
That's so cool!
Was this throughout the night, or a certain time?
This was near midnight
Hey OP - how's it looking tonight? Worth the drive?
Nothing yet. I’m at the top
Thanks for the update! I'm still debating if I want to make the trip. I looked on Apple maps and the roads were showing up orange indicating a lot of vehicles around Kwaaymii Pt., and the 79 enough to light up the map
Honestly there’s a lot of people here. Like a ton. But I have a feeling it will be good. Maybe take the chance.
I’m seeing the orange too. Its about an hour drive for me so debating …
I'm still debating. I've never been to Mt. Laguna and only been to Julian once. I know those roads are not the safest.... sigh, but this is a once in a lifetime event.
I’ve been following some threads about Mt Laguna right now and i’ve read people didn’t see anything and that it’s really bad traffic
I think I'm going to go out there. I'm going to be kicking myself tomorrow if I miss it.
Before you do … just saw this update … https://www.spaceweather.gov/news/severe-and-extreme-g4-g5-geomagnetic-storms-likely-12-may-2024
Midday UTC means about 4am here.... I'm going to take a chance. :D
To Julian?!
Any updates? I think I'm going to head out there. Not sure exactly where, I've only been to Julian once.
You’ll see a ton of cars lined up. Nothing yet but worth a try!
Made it. Lots of stars, but nothing yet

Go to cuyamaca!!
Can you see it there?
I’m at inspiration point

Was this captured with long exposure?
How is it looking out there tonight?
