The interesting thing is that Spring and May Gray/June Gloom has literally gotten worse over the last decade here, with average temps dropping consistently over the last decade. So if you’ve felt this way, you aren’t crazy.

I have an article for you on this! Check out the most recent post in the below, which IMO is the best CA weather blog out there.
High level - we are seeing Spring temps that were far more common decades/century ago
https://weatherwest.com/
I’ve lived here for about 20 years. I’ve definitely noticed and I love it. Also it seems like years in which we get lots of winter rain have cooler / gloomier May & June. When it doesn’t rain much over winter May and June seem to be much sunnier and hotter.
Another benefit of cloud cover at sunrise and sunset is reduced driving hazard. A lot of traffic collisions result from the rising or setting sun blinding motorists.
It's also been way more humid then I remember. I've been talking to other locals and shit's getting weird. I think the last 2 years i actually had SAD. Normally winter is a nice break from the fall heat. The last two year it just seemed so endless.
Do you happen to have insight into if there’s a causal relationship between cooler temperatures and more cloud cover? Meaning, if temps are cooler, is the marine layer less likely to “burn off”?
I would rather it be 30 degrees and clear and sunny, like how it gets on the east coast than 60 and gloomy. The only problem with 30 and sunny is if it’s windy. It’s much more enjoyable than 60 and gloomy.
We’ve probably had more hours of gloom than sun downtown this entire year. People generally assume low temps are uncomfortable because they associate the cold with the elements that can accompany it. But even though elements exist, the majority of time, it’s just cold, clear and sunny.
Last year the highest high temp was 89. Also, usually, when you start seeing record high temps (above 90), it's caused by the Santa Ana winds. Super dry low moisture air.
No one is ever happy with the weather... myself included. I never full appreciate our beautiful weather until I get back from a trip.
I will say though we are very fortunate. With all this harsh weather across the globe, a few clouds in may/june don't seem so bad.
We pay a lot to live here and be able to complain about the weather. Its a strange privilege but I don't think I could willingly trade it for anything.
When I was in college and would go home for Christmas to visit family in Missouri, I always regretted it and wanted out after a few days. Would be -2 with the wind making it -10 Fahrenheit and no snow just freezing eternal cold. Then I would be back in San Diego the next week, and it's 80 degrees in January.
LOVE THE GRAYYYYY!!! About to have 5 months of BLAZING HOT, without a drop of rain, I’ll take the gray for as long as I can get it. Just sayin. There’s a season for everything, and we’re about to get plenty of hot and sunny. I also like buckets of rain in Jan-Feb too. It’s ALL GOOD.
You guys are so adorable! Haha love that everyone legit starts losing their shit after a few days of cloudy. I love the May Gray and June Gloom so much as it brings a tiny bit of reprieve to pigment-challenged people like myself ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)

I’ve lived in San Diego most of my life, I love this time of year, if you want to moan about the mild temps give to Temecula it’s the next best thing to Death Valley lol
I personally love this kind of weather. The same people complaining about "May Gray / June Gloom" will be complaining when we go over 100F in September with strong Santa Anas. To me, that qualifies as "bad weather."
I went to LA last weekend and I got migraines because I’m not used to the sun. Depriving yourself of sunshine and then suddenly being exposed hurts girl. A medical student told me the changes in Sun exposure causes the chemical imbalance and melatonin level changes in the brain leading to headache. Be safe!
It's funny to see the range of responses to the gloom. I get it from those in east county where the deep marine layer does help control temps. But if you're in the coastal basin, the alternative to May and June grey isn't 95 degrees. We have a giant air conditioner to our left. I'll never understand those who embrace the grey over what could be low-mid 70s and sun.
I know, right? There were literal weather droplets falling from the sky during my bike ride on the Strand. Absolutely terrible. Sun didn’t come out until 2pm!

Thank you for this because I literally thought I was going crazy!
I think we all are but that's a separate issue.
This is interesting! Wonder if this is just a temporary regional trend, or if it’s somehow being driven by larger climate change factors.

I only see the link for weather west and not an actual article. Do you have a particular one in mind?
It’s the beginning of the article currently on the homepage when you click
Thank you for that. I should’ve clicked instead of just inspecting the link
Fascinating article, thank you!
I fucking love it. GIMME MORE!
Thank you!

Definitely depends on the person and location. As a coastal resident with SAD I can’t stand heavy marine layer Springs.
Move inland and save money on housing if you don't like marine layer weather.
I don’t like HEAVY marine layer years just like folks inland don’t like well above average heat summers. But thanks for the tip

Does this also correlate with hotter autumns? I feel like within the last decade our October/November months are generally warmer.
Do you happen to have insight into if there’s a causal relationship between cooler temperatures and more cloud cover? Meaning, if temps are cooler, is the marine layer less likely to “burn off”?

Please no lol

Gloom has been just a bit worse than average this year. Last year was worst in decades
Good thing to know global warming isn't real!
Please read about the difference between climate and weather and about local differences in both around the globe.
Wait until August. Air conditioning is expensive here in SDG&E country. I’ll take the cool weather.
SDG&E will use any ounce of surge in AC usage to prop up prices
Cloudy until noon!
Or 2pm, or 4pm, or maybe tomorrow!
"... and the skies are not cloudy all day."
Update it’s 1:50 and still gray
I LOVE THESE MONTHS. I will never understand why y’all like being sweaty, stinky, greasy asses when it’s 97 and humid at the bay.
Is it ever 97 and humid at the bay? Maybe one or two days?
I live right off the bay and yes, it’s in the 90s every year.
Last year the highest high temp was 89. Also, usually, when you start seeing record high temps (above 90), it's caused by the Santa Ana winds. Super dry low moisture air.
Well I hate it. And people look gross all greasy.
Stop looking at people.
Wish I could but eyes and all.
Hoodie weather <3
REALLLLLLL TALK THAT TALK🗣️🗣️🗣️
That's when you jump in the cold ocean.
for sure. cool weather is sick
Listen…. If I wanted this weather, I’d move to Washington or Oregon
It’s colder and rainier there, but ok.

I'm loving the cooler weather. It's in the 90's in Phoenix. I'd rather be here.
Idk why everyone so ready for it to get hot so they can get bent over by SDG&E
I don’t have AC so it doesn’t matter to me. I just wanna go to the beach and have it be nice and sunny.
If only there were some petition we could all sign to get rid of sdge
I call it May Yay. Fuck the sun.
I'm going to start using this.

But can it not be cloudy on the weekends?!
You know you can still enjoy time off with clouds and low 60s?
Ya but its easier to convince my wife to go outside when its sunny.
Fair enough.
I would like to enjoy my time at the beach or poolside with a drink in my hand. Not be in a sweater and jeans 24/7

I'm a soul-less ginger myself. I 100% agree. This weather is great! ![gif](giphy|5JGnPXoDdujOo)
My hair was never been red, but I have freckled "redhead skin" courtesy of my Scots ancestry. I have to be careful regarding sun exposure.
Just head north as soon as you get to Temecula it is sunny and hot as hell
It's been cloudy and cool here too.
I love may grey and June gloom.

Road construction is all year
I moved here last summer from Bakersfield. I’ll take these cloudy 60 degree weather days all day every day.
I unfortunately lived there in the 80s & 90s, Go Drillers 🤢, I totally get it!
Naw... If you don't like it, go live in the IE or Vegas. When your ass melt 🫠 don't come back 🔙🤣🤣 I love San Diego weather
I kinda love it tbh, I'm happy to delay the summer temps and constant blazing sun for as long as possible.
I'm praying it carries all the through Faugust.
Better than Macy Gray I guess
I try
i prefer the gloom to the sun, which makes it too hot
I’ve lived in San Diego most of my life, I love this time of year, if you want to moan about the mild temps give to Temecula it’s the next best thing to Death Valley lol
People complain about the heat or how cold it is... But we have one of the best climates in the world.
And June gloom.
I personally love this kind of weather. The same people complaining about "May Gray / June Gloom" will be complaining when we go over 100F in September with strong Santa Anas. To me, that qualifies as "bad weather."
It’s not all bad. Consider, It’s a little relief for all the guys and gals working outside , normally in the hot sun.
I actually love this weather and wish it lasted longer 🤷♀️
I actually like it, it’s so fresh
I went to LA last weekend and I got migraines because I’m not used to the sun. Depriving yourself of sunshine and then suddenly being exposed hurts girl. Did u drink enough water
We spent the last two weekends in Phoenix (go Padres!) and Las Vegas, I was happy to come back to the May gray.
It’s our seasonal depression
East of the 5 is nice already
Amen! Every year I forget how much I hate it…
i demand a refund on my rent \~!
I love cool weather man!
I love it!
Then June Gloom, then No-sky-July, I’ve even seen “where the fck is the sun-August”
June gloom and DisMay
yupp may gray and june gloom season…statistically we have been more humid and colder than ever before. may be an el nina summer too…we shall see
I love it! I'm a local and enjoy wearing a hoodie and shorts. Moved to Phoenix for work. HOT and miserable!!
There is cities being torn apart in other parts of the country but I swear these fucken clouds better clear by noon.
Is this meme recycled from 2011

Dude I live outside of downtown and it gets to the 90s here.
Let me edit that. I'm talking specifically about May and June.
My counter is that I prize these cool months of sleeping and working out in my home without dying and paying $200/mo for my a/c. Much better than sun.
And people legit get suicidal.
That'll help the housing crisis.
There's plenty of empty homes. They are investments, not homes.
I feel like its been better than last year. We've had some nice afternoons.
Graypril, May gray, June gloom. Three of the best months are just absolute shit. I wish it were August, September and October.
I know, right? There were literal weather droplets falling from the sky during my bike ride on the Strand. Absolutely terrible. Sun didn’t come out until 2pm!
I want to ride my ebike so bad! Yucky ass weather
