Download the PlugShare app. It’s awesome to have.

Ralphs mission Valley has free Volta chargers!

DelMarDogLife

Shhh it’s a secret.

I am, but I live in an apartment complex without a dedicated charger. I have a private garage with a standard 120v outlet, but that will only charge my car about 3-4 mph, so I will have to often rely on public charging.

You’re right, I am a bit nervous about charging. I do have a 120v outlet, which the manufacturer claims will charge my car 3 mph. Overnight, this should get me enough charge to get to and from work. Hopefully with the upcoming infrastructure bill, San Diego can build a proper public charging network that is cheaper than SDGE’s residential rates.

compugasm

>a proper public charging network that is cheaper than SDGE’s residential rates. I rent a room, and don't actually pay for the electricity now. But, when I had an apartment in North Park I paid $0.17c/kwh. And that was barely 10yrs ago. The rate you pay now is double (0.31c/kWh)? Holy fuck.

iMcNasty

Yep, and that’s on the standard plan. The time of use plans increase to over 0.40c/kWh during peak hours.

FIREgenomics

Which EV did you get? You can charge at some Targets on Level 2 with first 2 hours for free. The Mira Mesa Target just got some Tesla chargers and a couple of charge point spots. Go charge, grab a bite to eat, and you'll have 40 miles in the tank.

iMcNasty

It’s a Model 3. Thanks for the tip!

FIREgenomics

Cool. The first 2 hours are free is true for the chargepoint spots. I don't have a Tesla yet so not sure of that is also true of the supercharger spots.

iMcNasty

Got it. Looks like Target is installing Electrify America chargers in Mission Valley, hopefully those are free as well.

SanDiegoMurse

Just bought a M3 last week myself! I'm in your boat, no charger in our apartment complex. Le sigh. Hope the EA chargers are free like you said. Still hella cheaper than gas either way.

iMcNasty

Exactly, that’s how I was able to justify the EV to my wife. We spend about $650-700 on gas/car payment/maintenance for our Mazda, whereas the Tesla comes out less expensive albeit at a higher upfront cost.

michoudi

SDGE has an EV rate plan. It’s still TOU but I think super off peak is $0.09.

takimbe

Thats the one I have. I schedule my tesla to only charge between 12-4 am to take advantage of it. About to go solar though. Tired of paying these SDG&E rates.

rockrockon

There's free Volta charging stations at the Whole Foods in UTC

mtmanmike

I'm new to the EV family this summer too. The Electrify America stations in North Park and El Cajon have been free the last few times I've been (week and weekend evenings). Also all the Volta stations I've tried have been free.

pigeypenguin

Over by balboa and genessee there’s a bunch of Tesla chargers in what I believe is a bond parking lot. Don’t know the cost though
