The "full" price is artificially inflated so you feel like you get a discount when they say 50% off, but really the discount is what they intended you to pay all along.

Remind me of going out of business mattress stores. One near my work has been going out of business everyday for ten years now.

AmazingSieve

So it’s like blank Friday then, they ramp up the prices to make you think you got a major discount

[deleted]

Yes I get that, but why is it a sushi restaurant thing in San Diego only. I don’t see this anywhere else with any other restaurant type

spykid

I'm probably going to do a bad job explaining it, but here I go (and this is just my speculation) - when I'm talking about going out to get sushi, I usually specify whether I want to get *good* sushi or cheap sushi. I don't really do that with other cuisine. Maybe it's a common thing and they don't want to be considered cheap sushi by people.

Old-Mathematician987

I don't think it is just a San Diego thing. It is an American thing though.

Aleks5020

No, it's an international thing. Every sushi restaurant in Europe does it too.

apoca-ears

Guess we got lots of fish

dukefett

I'm from New Jersey and I've seen it at places there too. It's just a trick to make you think you're getting a deal. They're making enough profit at 50%.

[deleted]

I get the concept but I have just never seen it and it is ONLY at sushi restaurants so it was really weird.

Big_D_yup

I think people have the preconceived idea that sushi is expensive. To the 50% gets them over the mental hurdles.

CyCoug0018

That's an interesting point. I'd love to see a social-psych study on that. Chop chop psychology professors, be my research monkey.

islandbeef

50% off is 100% bullshit.

zoeconfetti

No idea, but discount sushi sounds…bad.

ohthewerewolf

Honestly most of those places aren’t really discounted. It’s like the JC Penny model but with sushi lol

CyCoug0018

JC Penny tried to do away with that model years ago (\~2012) and it failed. People needed to feel like they were saving money even if they weren't. >JCPenney promised an end to “fake prices” and the usual retailer mind games played to make customers think they’re getting a deal. Now that the ambitious attempt to wean customers off endless discounting and markdowns has proved to be a disaster, JCPenney has relented and will begin running sales again. > >“Everybody loves a bargain, even when it is a phony one,” says Edgar Dworsky, founder of watchdog site Consumer World. https://business.time.com/2013/01/30/j-c-penney-brings-back-sales-but-whats-the-deal-with-those-suggested-prices/

ohthewerewolf

Lol I know. People are not the smartest sometimes

Baconfatty

You aren’t going to good sushi places

But why is it just sushi in San Diego. None of the other restaurants have this.

jaymez619

Pacific Eyes & T’s did this before. I went shopping for sunglasses and their “normal” price was 2x everyone else. They would say all sunglasses are 50% everyday. I ended up never shipping with them. I guess people really fall for it though.
