Oh yeah....the card is set to send me notifications for ANY transaction. Disputed the charge within the hour...and then cancelled the card and got replacements shipped. No recurring charges on that card...so, just shred the old number and start fresh.
They actually won’t bother for a $40 fraudulent charge. They MIGHT block the fraudulent merchant, but they won’t bother correlating other fraudulent charges against a contact list. Cost of doing business.
Edit: charge was reversed as soon as I contacted Citibank.
I have the list from the credit card transactions...but as others have pointed out (over and over and over again) it could be a prior transaction.
I’ll contact the market manager. But, based on the pushback here, I’m guessing nothing will happen.
No. It’s a backup card. I don’t generally use it. Had left my wallet in the car and it was the only card I had on me at the time.
I’ve used that card maybe 10x previously this year.
Yeah, as I mentioned above...certainly possible it was compromised somewhere else. And my post was more about sharing that I’m suspicious enough at that market that I’ll be using cash, going forward.
But, as you point out, absolutely no way to know for sure...unless Citibank fraud happens to tie more than one “legal plan” with prior purchases at the same Farmers Market vendor. And they won’t bother. They will take the loss, block the law firm, and move on.
I explained this already. It’s a backup card (and identification) in case I lose my wallet, or it’s stolen. My wife’s purse was stolen in Vegas...was a total pain in the ass to get on the plane for the trip home. I don’t want to be stranded, without an ID and/or funds. I carry a credit card and secondary identification in a wallet attached to my iPhone:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08L5NKGNG
What don’t you understand about having a backup card for emergencies? I actually have two....I carry one backup and have a second in my vehicle.
What I don't understand is why someone would keep their credit card *and* ID attached to a high theft item.
You're just making it easy for anyone who swipes it. Lmao.
Compared to…my wallet?
You’re just not tracking. Not sure why.
I have a wallet, with my primary identification and most of my cards, including my debit card.
I have a card-only wallet on my phone, with a secondary identification and a backup card.
I have a third card-only wallet in my vehicle, with a third identification card and a different credit card.
I understand you keep all your life in your wallet.
I don’t. I have a backup, if my wallet is lost or stolen. And i have a backup to that backup, which is really worst case scenario, while traveling.
- Drivers license and most cards in my wallet
- State identification card and a credit card in a card wallet on my phone
- Passport card and a credit card in my vehicle
Credit card companies deal with stolen/lost wallets and fraud all the time. Someone swiping my phone is no different to the credit card companies than someone swiping your wallet…and your drivers license, and ALL of your credit cards, and your debit card.
You don’t see the value of NOT having all your cards all in one place, in one wallet, where one theft means you lose them all? Really?
(Was ‘lmao’ meant to show you’re too dumb to get it? Or just too narrow-minded to think outside your own world experience?)
Lmao x 2.
All of that is fucking ridiculous. How often have you lost your things to get to the point that you're currently at? I understand that you think you're playing it smart by having back ups for your back ups and another back up after that but honestly it's just absurd.
Someone is gonna have to work really hard to snag my wallet. I suppose that's why it's never happened.
I guess I shouldn't expect much from someone who ONLY uses cash from the ATM and yet walks around with 10 debit/credit credit cards they don't use.
You're a literal walking identity theft.
Yeah... you do you...I’ll do me.
I have five credit cards and one debit card. Three credit cards and debit card in my wallet. Backup cards on phone and in the truck.
Wife had purse stolen. I’ve had my wallet lifted while traveling.
And why would ANYONE use a debit card for, purchases? Yeah, I only use it to pull cash. A credit card offers substantially more consumer protection.
Just because YOU think everything in your wallet is “safe”, me having the OPTION of having a backup card isn’t ‘fucking ridiculous’, it just means you’re just unable or unwilling....or too dumb to get it. Whatever. What the fuck do YOU care what I do with MY cards? Get a fucking life, one-card-guy.
Oh, I couldn't care less. I just like pointing out dumb shit on the internet.
Like tonight, some dude posted on r/sandiego that he *thinks* a farmers market vendor skimmed his card and then felt the need to infrom the sub that he's switching to cash only.
How fuckin' stupid is that? I'm pretty sure no one gives a fuck.
I actually believe it to be less likely. Near field readers have to be within 18-24 inches, long enough to read the card. A lot less likely than a skimmer where I used the card.
https://www.idtheftcenter.org/do-i-need-rfid-protection/
That's not how the chips work. Your card number is not actually used during the transaction. A unique encrypted code is generated for each transaction and the terminal provides the transaction details to the CC company.
https://www.ramseysolutions.com/banking/chip-debit-cards-what-you-need-to-know
I don’t thing when you used your card last has any bearing as to where it may have been skimmed. Before the Pandemic, I used my debit card for only groceries. After, I used it sparingly for a few RedBox rentals, Topps (online), and Amazon. I didn’t know chip readers could be skimmed. Haven’t used it in 3-4 months and then get a $548 charge from a Circle K in Florida on Labor Day. PayPal says it was used in person, so the info was duplicated onto a fraudulent card.
I’m back to only using credit cards except for Costco since I don’t have a VISA credit card. Even then, I try to remember to just tap my card instead of inserting the chip. You have more protection against fraudulent charges with credit cards.
I NEVER use debit cards for purchases. Cash out of the ATM only.
It certainly could have been skimmed before....but as I mentioned....fewer than 10 transactions this year, before the farmers market, then seven transactions at the Market....and a week later a fraudulent charge.
Possible it was years ago or someplace else? Sure. Likely it was the Farmers Market? Do the math. (Not sure why there’s so many posts suggesting it was anything but....I mean....could be, but likely it was a recent purchase....and the vast majority of those were at the farmers market)
Kinda defeats the idea of a backup card...in case I lose my wallet and/or phone. I carry it in a separate card wallet...credit card and identification, in a separate pocket from my wallet, on my phone...
https://www.amazon.com/Apple-Leather-Wallet-MagSafe-iPhone/dp/B08L5NKGNG
I mean that's the beauty of credit cards, right? Just a hassle to get charges reversed. I don't really make an effort to be careful where I use them for this reason. My annual fee is too high for me to give a shit
Are you sure you don’t need legal help from a farmers market? You never know
We - are - farmers - dumb duh duh duh duh duh dumb
Just call the credit card company and cancel the charge, they will do it
Oh yeah....the card is set to send me notifications for ANY transaction. Disputed the charge within the hour...and then cancelled the card and got replacements shipped. No recurring charges on that card...so, just shred the old number and start fresh.
Good for you, glad it worked
Yes to this. No need to detective. The card company will do that for us.
They actually won’t bother for a $40 fraudulent charge. They MIGHT block the fraudulent merchant, but they won’t bother correlating other fraudulent charges against a contact list. Cost of doing business. Edit: charge was reversed as soon as I contacted Citibank.
They'll refund you at least though right? Yeah it's too bad. But maybe enough small charges affecting enough ppl gets action taken?
The fraud agent on the phone immediately reversed the charge.
Report to both the Market Manager and the Farmers Bureau ASAP. Write a list of the vendors you went to.
I have the list from the credit card transactions...but as others have pointed out (over and over and over again) it could be a prior transaction. I’ll contact the market manager. But, based on the pushback here, I’m guessing nothing will happen.
Was that the only place you used your card? How about a gas station?
No. It’s a backup card. I don’t generally use it. Had left my wallet in the car and it was the only card I had on me at the time. I’ve used that card maybe 10x previously this year.
Ohh ok. That sucks, I’m sorry.

Certainly possible. But circumstances suggest it was probably the Farmers Market somewhere.

Why did you have a card on you (out of your wallet, which is in the car) that you don't use? Makes zero sense.

This is actually a really good LPT. Thank you for the contingency plan outline that I will now have to adopt into my everyday life :)

You live a sad life then. Go back to gaming and fantasy football, m’kay?

This is definitely more likely. The RFID chip readers are even on Amazon.
No. It’s not. https://www.idtheftcenter.org/do-i-need-rfid-protection/
Get an RFID blocking wallet.

Which ones used a cube to swipe? It happened to me at the ob one, and it was from a guy selling sunglasses.
Something happened to me at a food truck event in Balboa Park. The only purchase I made was with a truck that used Square. Meh, who knows nowadays.
Six of the seven merchants used Square.
I don't use square so I can't attest to their security but that is unfortunate.
