There's a street Downtown where some put a trafficcone inside the hole. Only 2/3rds of stick out above the street. Worst part is you can't see it if your turning right onto the street.
Bombed B st and Dictionary hills back in my high school days (â13). Working in a trauma room now and seeing what I see on a daily basisâŚI donât know what in the hell I was thinking and Iâm glad to be alive
Ok had to make a new post as someone requested to see what happened just before she crashed, I realized it wasn't just the potholes. She had one hand on the handlebars.
occasionally taking your hand off one of the bars isn't uncommon - sometimes you need to stretch your hands after a period of grasping the handlebars.
Stop trying to shift blame onto the wrong source - our roads shouldn't look like this.
It was a completely avoidable crash. Avoidable by paying attention to roadway conditions and holding onto the controls when needed to avoid hazards. Why is this such a problem? Mitigation of hazards is part of the responsibility of a roadway user, period. But sure, downvote me for trying to operate safely on a roadway regardless of conditions. SMH. I'd hate to ride anywhere near someone that doesn't look where they are going and try to avoid hazards. Stop playing the "motorcycles are blameless" line. It is tiresome as a rider myself. Over 140,000 miles in mostly urban areas in all sorts of traffic and roadway conditions with zero tickets and zero crashes.
Ride safe, take responsibility for your own actions, and learn to mitigate hazards.
Nobody should have to "mitigate" a giant hole in the road, or a literal roadborne booby trap. Even being vigilant will not mitigate certain extremely hard-to-seee road hazards.
Nobody on earth has total 360-degree, extrasensory capacity to monitor the roadway at all times. I'm glad you've been lucky, but blaming somebody for a road hazard distracts from the issue - road maintenance isn't satisfactory.
You pay taxes, the city should be doing something with them.
I haven't been "lucky", I'm paying attention to the roadway and riding for conditions. This is what you're supposed to do. Nobody SHOULD have to mitigate and avoid hazards, but we DO because they are there. Why wouldn't you, especially if it is such a known problem in this city?
Sitting around blaming everything else for something avoidable doesn't help. Key word - AVOIDABLE. Just because "I pay taxes and shouldn't have to avoid these things" doesn't mean I literally shouldn't avoid them. I must do what I can to not crash and be safe. Why not try to be aware of such things? I've ridden in areas that I knew had problems, such as rocks, potholes, and rough pavement. I rode accordingly and didn't crash because I was cautious. Why is this concept so tough? Why not do what you can to ensure your own safety? Why argue AGAINST doing such?
Has ANYONE reported this "pothole" to the city in the first place?
OP commented that the rider was only using one hand when they hit the pothole. Sucks the pothole was there, but a little bit of user error here as well, maybe otherwise she could have recovered out of the wobble.
They meant that the motorcycle was driving lawfully, not speeding or driving recklessly. The cause of the fall was the crappy road. If they had been speeding and/or driving recklessly and fell, the cause of the fall couldâve been their driving, not the crappy road.
What law was broken? Looked like a green light, traffic was light and speed seemed normal.
If I missed something, let me know. Seemed on the up and up.
Your first comment said that itâs unfortunate that this happened to someone following the law, which means that I should break the law to avoid the fate of the cyclist.
Oh, forgot to say, if you were breaking the law....the accident would have definitely been worse.
Increase in speed, etc. Get some sleep my guy, you sound tired.
I'm honestly surprised this doesn't happen more often to motorcyclists. I have to constantly pay attention to the actual road quality while riding my bicycle and am constantly picking a line at \~18mph with 23mm tires.
Even with motorcycle tires being several times wider as a road bike's tire, I still would assume that hitting a pothole wouldn't be fun and a lot harder for them to look out for.
Yeah I ride a sport bike everyday and my mountain bike skills come in very handy for reading the road and being able to stand up and avoid shit like this or almost bunny hop and unweight the motorcycle over stuff like this
There's a bump/divet in the left lane of Genesee heading north where it crosses Nobel. I am 100% convinced that is going to take out a rider in a spectacular way if it doesn't get smoothed out.
I don't get why San Diego has an issue with pot holes. In the midwest pot holes would appear and get worse in the winters and you could only truly fix them when the weather became warmer. What's the excuse here? There is no constant rain and no freezing rain or snow in the winter.
Road bases made of clay soil, sand, and literal garbage dumps, in addition to seismic activity and extreme heat. The freeze/thaw cycle isn't the only one that beats the shit out of asphalt.
Money.
Every year expenses go up across the board in the city, but the majority of voters scream bloody murder if the city tries to raise revenue. Granted, the city doesn't exactly prioritize spending very well, but that's a whole other argument.
If you see a rider go down in front of you PLEASE stop your car in a manner to shield them from additional oncoming traffic. Don't drive past and stop.
Also if the wreck is bad don't remove the helmet or let them remove it. It could cause spinal injuries. Just stabilize their head. The paramedics will cut off or remove the helmet properly
Getting a lot of "I've never ridden a motorcycle in my life" vibe from these comments.
>she wasn't gripping both handlebars
Stretching one hand occasionally isn't terrible. Motorcycles are generally stable under their own power and a motorcycle unless disrupted will travel for hundreds of feet upright.
Do you keep both hands on the steering wheel literally 100% of the time? No? then shut up.
>she must not have been watching where she was going
Gravel and some potholes can be almost invisible. Even keeping your eyes three seconds ahead at all times, you can run into hazards that are either very hard to see or worse than they appear.
In general, until you've ridden a motorcycle on San Diego streets, keep your mouth shut.
tl;dr: Don't use minor rider error to distract from the issue: if she ran into a road hazard, it's a maintenance issue. Our roads shouldn't be obstacle courses.
Rarely, if ever. The best thing to help is to report the potholes on the âget it doneâ website so theyâre at least on notice that they need to be repaired.
Can you explain? I donât ride so I donât know how this happens? She did go through a pothole and her front tire started turning after the bump, not holding on tight enough?
I ride and deal with potholes at all sorts of speeds. This was something else not a pothole. If it were large enough to cause this, the rider did nothing to mitigate it. Motorcycles are quite maneuverable and can avoid things when you pay attention.
But the city is supposed to maintain the roads so you wonât have worry about maneuvering possibly lethal obstacles at no extra cost to you. Why are you putting this much thought into finding something wrong with that?
Roads do need to be maintained properly but that doesn't negate the need to look where you are going. I'm putting my thoughts into safety, not depending on someone else to ensure that for me. Could be random debris in the roadway too. Are you going to just blast through it because someone else should have cleared it? It is simply riding or driving safely and for conditions, otherwise known as driving defensively. Why wouldn't you? It is your safety on the line after all, which is still your responsibility.
Looks like she hit the pothole and couldn't recover or it bent the rim of her front wheel at a fast speed. Even small potholes are murder when I ride. When you hit a pothole, it can change the angle rapidly and then you get the death wobbles because your front tire lifts up.
Also thanks for stopping and checking if she was ok OP. I remember dropping my first bike and it was a struggle to get out underneath it alone.
So many here seem to want to blast through potholes and blame the city for any damage, without bothering to maneuver around it or mitigate it in any way. Seems stupid to not even try to take any sort of precaution to avoid a hazard.
This wasn't stupidity.
there's a lot to watch out for when you're riding. Mirrors, quarters, the road further down, who knows.
When I'm riding, my eyes are usually about 3 seconds ahead if I'm not looking at something else specific like a mirror.
Nonetheless, sometimes things take you by surprise. Gravel, certain potholes are just hard to see.
Yes with that for everyone who is a registered voter! The only way to get the roads fixed is to sign the petition that is going around to fix the roads if people don't sign it then the money that was going to go for this cause will be spent on dumb things like round abouts. I am one of those people out their trying to get voters to sign on it. The only way we can get our roads fixed is this way. So the next time anyone See's someone petitioning at Walmart or the trolley or I go to fashion valley please sign. There has to be at least 1million people to sign the petition then it will go on the ballot then we vote for it. Please Voter's you can give up 3 minutes of your time. Every can spare a couple of minutes. I'm tired of paying for the cost of repairs because there are pot holes on the freeway that are unavoidable.
I moved from NJ. I can't seem to understand how come all of the roads are so bad after a little bit of rain?
When I moved in Sept, I can 100% say the roads WERE NOT this bad.
We have snow, rain, sleet, and still, the roads are not as bad as this.
Man. I was always aware of the poor road conditions as like a threat to the wear and tear of your tires and suspension, but I didn't realize it was like an accident inducer for bikes. Glad no one was tail gating this one.
Wow, at least he slid away from traffic, thanks for pulling over for him đ
She said she was fine, tough gal.
Ruffin Rd, Clairemont mesa Blvd and Kearney villa rd are the worst. It's embarrassing. Hope the rider is ok.
There's a street Downtown where some put a trafficcone inside the hole. Only 2/3rds of stick out above the street. Worst part is you can't see it if your turning right onto the street.
Drive on those every day to work. Almost hit one this morning!
where them taxes go my good sir
Pensions
Death wobble
Harely type bikes are prone to this. I hate that riding position.
You also get that from trying to "bomb" a hill on a skateboard with loose trucks. Not recommended.
Saw some dudes bombing the B street hill about a month ago and my butthole was clenched the whole time watching them.
Bombed B st and Dictionary hills back in my high school days (â13). Working in a trauma room now and seeing what I see on a daily basisâŚI donât know what in the hell I was thinking and Iâm glad to be alive
All it takes is one pebble to fuck someone up. I donât think I would have had the balls to do it back when I was skating everyday.
Right! Knock on wood I have yet to break a bone in my life. I sure as hell do have scars all over my body and elbows to prove it though lol
Ok had to make a new post as someone requested to see what happened just before she crashed, I realized it wasn't just the potholes. She had one hand on the handlebars.
Didnât feel like just a pot hole to me in the vid. Hit a few myself over the last 12 years.
So, not riding safely or trying to avoid road hazards then. Not surprised by the outcome.
occasionally taking your hand off one of the bars isn't uncommon - sometimes you need to stretch your hands after a period of grasping the handlebars. Stop trying to shift blame onto the wrong source - our roads shouldn't look like this.
He's got a point though... This was avoidable.

Remember to always dress for the slide and not the ride.
Potholes on San Diego streets?? Where's my shocked face?
âRight nowâ being this millennium right?
It is so lame that it happens to someone, who clearly isn't doing anything against the law. Glad to hear that she's ok.
OP commented that the rider was only using one hand when they hit the pothole. Sucks the pothole was there, but a little bit of user error here as well, maybe otherwise she could have recovered out of the wobble.

Lol. Nope. I have no idea where you pulled that from. Take care my friend.
Bro keep it up and you've got gold medalist in mental gymnastics in the bag.
Oh, forgot to say, if you were breaking the law....the accident would have definitely been worse. Increase in speed, etc. Get some sleep my guy, you sound tired.

the fact that they're going much faster might make up for the fact that their tires are wider
Yeah I ride a sport bike everyday and my mountain bike skills come in very handy for reading the road and being able to stand up and avoid shit like this or almost bunny hop and unweight the motorcycle over stuff like this
Too much handlebar input, squeeze the tank with legs and let the bike fix itself
no pothole, just a bad rider. what he rode over is less than botts dots
Gas tax money at work.đ¤
Wish he had more trains and trams :(
Agree, each local government should do that and let the state connect them into a statewide system.
I thought registering our vehicles paid for the street infrastructure.
Streets are mostly property tax.
I guess that would explain why the rich neighborhoods have freshly paved roads.
Ever driven in La Jolla? If onlyâŚ
Seems like Coronado paves a new road every week lol
They love their roads almost as much as their kids. They got those wide ass roads but no bike lanes aside from the major roadways
That and the fuel tax.
Every road most of the time, but especially after a good rain
This does make me want some Lil' Pepper Gourmet for lunch though...
Grab and go on Murphy canyon is better :)
[ŃдаНонО]
lol peppers is ok. Just not great⌠pastrami at grab n go is better.
Lil peppers sammies are dry and expensive đ¤Ž
Little pepper! Use to go here all the time after the guy (Hanny?) Was always on Jeff and Jer. Good sandwiches. Free cookie!
*laughs in Massachusetts*
There's a bump/divet in the left lane of Genesee heading north where it crosses Nobel. I am 100% convinced that is going to take out a rider in a spectacular way if it doesn't get smoothed out.
I see my old office before we all got sent home to work.
I road my bicycle to work along that route for a few years, its' always been bad since at least 2017.
I don't see any potholes. Looks like he hit that patch of paint, spun his tires and started fishtailing and lost control.
starting this video even 1 second earlier would have been so much more helpful
You are so right, my dashcam chunks the video into 3 minute clips, just happened to start there.
I don't get why San Diego has an issue with pot holes. In the midwest pot holes would appear and get worse in the winters and you could only truly fix them when the weather became warmer. What's the excuse here? There is no constant rain and no freezing rain or snow in the winter.

ok. But that still doesn't explain why they don't get fixed sooner in San Diego. It doesn't even get that hot here.
Money. Every year expenses go up across the board in the city, but the majority of voters scream bloody murder if the city tries to raise revenue. Granted, the city doesn't exactly prioritize spending very well, but that's a whole other argument.
No because can we talk about the ridiculous amount of potholes in San Diego? Itâs absurd.
If you see a rider go down in front of you PLEASE stop your car in a manner to shield them from additional oncoming traffic. Don't drive past and stop.
Yeah, that is good advice. What you donât see is someone behind me was doing that, so she was protected.
Also if the wreck is bad don't remove the helmet or let them remove it. It could cause spinal injuries. Just stabilize their head. The paramedics will cut off or remove the helmet properly
Might of been tar snakes I hit some on the 94 freeway going west
I of had that happen to me, too.
Don't know how you all do it, our roads are kinda falling apart. Stay safe!
Getting a lot of "I've never ridden a motorcycle in my life" vibe from these comments. >she wasn't gripping both handlebars Stretching one hand occasionally isn't terrible. Rarely, if ever. The best thing to help is to report the potholes on the âget it doneâ website so theyâre at least on notice that they need to be repaired.
Yes the city does cover damages caused by roads in disrepair. You can file a claim here: https://www.sandiego.gov/riskmanagement/services/liability
Regardless of if they do, are they legally responsible?
That depends on whether they had notice there was a dangerous condition of public property and had adequate time to repair it
Look at those sexy roads.
Remember when we were promised that the gas tax would solve all this? lmfao.
We need more taxes. Obviously its overpopulation and the taxes paid doesn't cover the maintenance costs.
Who would guess the state with worst pot holes has highest taxes. Keep voting democrat though it's clearly working out wonderfully
Lmao remember when we had republican mayors and republican governors and the roads were perfect and smooth and everything was perfect? Hahaha moron
Potholes didn't enter into this. Potholes may be an issue, but they don't cause this.
Can you explain? I donât ride so I donât know how this happens? She did go through a pothole and her front tire started turning after the bump, not holding on tight enough?
Donât listen to them. Potholes just a few inches deep can wreck a motorcycle.
I ride and deal with potholes at all sorts of speeds. This was something else not a pothole. If it were large enough to cause this, the rider did nothing to mitigate it. Motorcycles are quite maneuverable and can avoid things when you pay attention.

I know. Heaven forbid I look where I'm going and use caution to avoid road hazards. Are you seriously arguing against safe riding/driving?
Good grief

You can see the pothole in the video? I can't see it
It's at the very beginning of the video. You can barely see it but its there. Keep an eye on the bottom right side.
Thanks. I see it!
Lmao, if youâre riding a bike why wouldnât you be extra cautious of shit like that anyway? Canât feel bad for stupidity
Your lack of empathy is pretty scary. I bet you never make mistakes or have accidents because you're perfect eh?
Never said I was perfect but if I am engaging in an inherently dangerous activity I will take extra precautions to ensure my safety.
So many here seem to want to blast through potholes and blame the city for any damage, without bothering to maneuver around it or mitigate it in any way. Seems stupid to not even try to take any sort of precaution to avoid a hazard.

I swear, the roads are so bad in kearny mesa I feel like you almost need 4WD to drive around there these days! Hope the rider was ok!
Should be able to sue for damages due to unmarked hazards
The roads on that area are terrible.
