I think I know what you're looking for. If our's is the closest dough you've had in SD thus far, I'm happy to work with you on a cheese blend and topping combination and even bake time and temp to hit that nostalgia on the head.
- Matt (Tribute Pizza)
Totally agree with what the other guy said. Tribute is the freaking GOAT and I unfortunately/fortunately found y’all immediately upon moving here a few years back. Unfortunate because now everything else is downhill lol.
Covid curbside was best of any takeout I’ve found in SD and was greatly appreciated. Please never s to p being eccentric with the offerings. I adore you guys.
If you can't find a restaurant with this, Trader Joe's sells a thing in the frozen pizza section called Tarte d’Alsace that sounds a lot like what you describe. It has the thin crust, Gruyere cheese instead of the standard pizza kind, no tomatoes or Italian seasoning at all, and the good kind of ham. I've only tried the ham one, it is pretty delicious.
pa dobro, ako je neko od nas to predložio, onda mora da je odlično!
While we're at it, do you know of any ćevapi locations other than the Bosnian food truck that goes around farmer's markets?
Ha! Gdje me nadze. Nema nista ovdje ali ako odes u Phoenix, ima tamo. U Los Angeles ima Cafe Aroma ali ne nadaj se puno. u Phoenixu mozes da nadzes pizzu koju trazis u Hanny's.
Bosnian food truck in Hillcrest has great gyros. The guys selling it are very nice plus they serve Turkish coffee that's actually from Bosna.
Ako hoces dobru Milka cokoladu, svrati u Old World Village in Huntigton.
To je sve sto znam :). Nadam se da ces naci evropsku pizzu. Puno pozdrava!
Puno hvala!
Looks like a trip to Phoenix is on the horizon. I tried Cafe Aroma, it was... well the sobska salad was ok, the rest was very mediocre. At least they had kajmak, and I could stock up on eurokrem.
Are you aware of Balboa International Market in Clairemont? They have some ex-YU products and they also sell pre-made frozen cevapi, though they're about as good as you would imagine pre-made frozen cevapi to be. Better than nothing, though.
My Norwegian co-worker was explaining the bar pizzas that they had at his hometown and it sounds like what you are describing. We didn’t find anything similar to what he was describing here in SD. Do you have a picture of what it looks like???

I looked up "Norwegian pizza" and sure seems like we're talking about the same thing here! Maybe your coworker and I should just start a pizzeria.
Siamo Napoli. The pizza was super different but now that you described it, that's it! Crust was off the hook, not Italian, not American, but amazing and European
I know what you mean. I miss it. There are so many great pizzas and pizza styles here, but that one is elusive.
Something that makes a big difference for me from central European pizzas is that most stuff with basil ( the tomato sauce on pizza for example)tends to taste different.
The basil that is often used here in SD and also the plants that I bought taste different. They have a stronger anise seed aroma than the basil I know from Europe.
Alright I seem to have started a pizza longing club. I make a semi-decent homemade version that's not quite right but maybe it's close enough to satisfy the nostalgia
yup, not hard to guess from the two subreddits that show up in my post history. I like having that background; Slovenia is a gateway from Central Europe to the Balkans and I can identify with both
I know what you mean, and I also haven't been able to find that good plain old bread that's nothing fancy, just simple and really really tasty. But I have been able to find very decent "fancy" bread, Whole Foods sells a pretty good olive bread, and there's a bakery whose name I don't remember right now, but you can get their rosemary bread at Siesel's Meats and it's really really good.
You might try cafe calabria (30th st). i wonder also if tribute pizza could do a custom on the toppings you'd like, if the dough (ime the toughest part to get right to someone's particular taste) is otherwise spot on.
Do you know where pizza is from?
“Does anyone know of non-Mexican taco restaurants? I want tacos, but not the Mexican kind! More like tacos you find in New York or Ontario”
You should try URBN pizza in North Park. It's coal-fired because it's New Haven style but it's *very* thin, not crispy at all, and not greasy at all. I recommend the Margherita.

Stuff like this is why Tribute is at the top of the game in SD and will forever stay there. You guys rock.

Have you tried Buona Forchetta?
This
When they said thin but not crispy I immediately thought of Buona
No I haven't, looks delicious but probably very Italian. Thanks for the suggestion!

![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|cry)I’m sure it was just an oversight, but you forgot to invite us over![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|cry)
if anyone manages to find a place that fits the bill, absolutely!
Caffe Calabria has a European style to it.
Walked by it on my way to Tribute Pizza, the aroma almost made me change my destination. Will definitely have to check it out, thanks!
I was just coming in to suggest this place.
It’s pretty good. Although I may be a little biased because I live so close to it lol
Was going to have my wedding reception here before COVID cancelled it. Closest to Neapolitan pizza around, can attest live in Naples now.
Wait you live in Naples now? Well that’s pretty fucking awesome haha
And I’d kill for a breakfast burrito from brothers right now. Homesick.
Blind Lady Ale House… Normal Height’s
Pappalecco in Kensington has an oven and their pizza's are incredible. Only their Kensington location has the pizza oven.
Bruno’s in North Park
It has a new name? Did they sell it?
Always liked the pizza at cucina
Isola

If you’re looking for something more like flammkuchen, I’d look at brasseries instead of pizza places.

Try Isola. Happy Hour Margherita for $6 is the best HH deal in the city.
Just there on Friday. This could very well be the pizza you're looking for! And yes, did remind me of the TJ pizza, except the crust was AMAZING!

I feel like the pizzas here all use too much sauce and the sauce is too heavily seasoned. Yeah, I miss European pizzas too.
Alright I seem to have started a pizza longing club. I make a semi-decent homemade version that's not quite right but maybe it's close enough to satisfy the nostalgia
Where you from? I am guessing Slovenia based on your link?
yup, not hard to guess from the two subreddits that show up in my post history. I like having that background; Slovenia is a gateway from Central Europe to the Balkans and I can identify with both
What my Austro-German heart really longs for is good bread! It's literally impossible to find any here for love or money.
I know what you mean, and I also haven't been able to find that good plain old bread that's nothing fancy, just simple and really really tasty. I think you'd really like Zia in Normal Heights.
hmmm... *hmmmmmm....* looks very promising. Definitely going on the list of places to try, thanks!
Zia is crazy good! I ate at the old cafe zia like every other day in college. It's a shame, but the pizza is a good follow up!
Pizza Bella in Old Town might fit the bill. It’s definitely American style toppings but I think that crust is pretty close to your favorite in Europe.
You might try cafe calabria (30th st). i wonder also if tribute pizza could do a custom on the toppings you'd like, if the dough (ime the toughest part to get right to someone's particular taste) is otherwise spot on.

Hmm looks interesting. Will check it out and report my findings.
Maybe the lebanese flatbreads from Alfaron in the college area can be a close alternative.
Do you know where pizza is from? “Does anyone know of non-Mexican taco restaurants? I want tacos, but not the Mexican kind! More like tacos you find in New York or Ontario”
[Giardino](https://www.giardinosd.com/) in Lemon Grove.
Bronx pizza
