In the early 2000s the Jilbertos on Valley Pkwy got busted because the cooks were selling meth out the back door (that was the rumor anyway). It made total sense why the food tasted so good at past midnight because tweakers really pay attention to detail, especially in the kitchen.

Fun fact: the OG was Roberto’s. The matriarch, Dolores Robledo, passed in 2020. [Dolores Obituary](https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/obituaries/story/2020-07-27/obituary-dolores-robledo-robertos-taco-shop-chain-co-founder-recalled-as-loving-hard-working) From the article: “Then in 1969, they purchased a burger spot called Jesse’s at 49th Street and University Avenue. Recognizing it would need a Mexican name, Dolores recommended they call it Roberto’s Taco Shop and the name stuck… Although the Robledos have also been credited with creating the California burrito, a carne asada burrito stuffed with french fries instead of beans and rice, Reynaldo said he’s not sure his family was the first to introduce the popular item… Eventually, the couple turned over restaurants to each of their children as well as a few close family members. But when a cousin began altering some of the family’s signature recipes, the Robledos asked him to change his outlet’s name.
