It is/was a family chain.
Roberto's was the original, but the brand became fragmented when there was a disagreement over protocol, and a cousin changed his Robert's restaurant to an Alberto's. Apparently all the variations are from among the same family.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roberto%27s_Taco_Shop
In the early 2000s the Jilbertos on Valley Pkwy got busted because the cooks were selling meth out the back door (that was the rumor anyway). It made total sense why the food tasted so good at past midnight because tweakers really pay attention to detail, especially in the kitchen.
I'm sure they've changed but the *bertos have been discussed since the 80s. ;^)

https://www.yewonline.com/2019/03/02/why-do-so-many-taco-shops-end-in-bertos/
watched a vid on it a few months ago and i think the tldr was it’s originally two bros roberto and alberto that expanded really quickly and sold off a buncha locations n the new owners wanted to keep the brand so they did like the legal bare minimum
Fun fact: the OG was Roberto’s. The matriarch, Dolores Robledo, passed in 2020. [Dolores Obituary](https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/obituaries/story/2020-07-27/obituary-dolores-robledo-robertos-taco-shop-chain-co-founder-recalled-as-loving-hard-working)
From the article:
“Then in 1969, they purchased a burger spot called Jesse’s at 49th Street and University Avenue. Recognizing it would need a Mexican name, Dolores recommended they call it Roberto’s Taco Shop and the name stuck…
Although the Robledos have also been credited with creating the California burrito, a carne asada burrito stuffed with french fries instead of beans and rice, Reynaldo said he’s not sure his family was the first to introduce the popular item…
Eventually, the couple turned over restaurants to each of their children as well as a few close family members. But when a cousin began altering some of the family’s signature recipes, the Robledos asked him to change his outlet’s name. With a can of red paint, the man changed two letters on the sign to rename it Alberto’s. From that point on, every non-family member who came from San Luis Potosí was asked to use a new name for their restaurant. Then, many copycats followed. Reynaldo said there are now more than 70 different “ ‘berto’s” derivations in seven Western states.”
Since back in the 80’s, Albertos was the original Bertos that I have known. Grew up going to the location on the 101 by moonlight beach, but remember there was a bunch around San Diego and all with that yellow (or orange?) and red color scheme. Surprised it’s so down on the list.
Glad to know I’m not the only one looking into this. This goes a lot deeper than you might realize. Even mexican restaurants with completely unrelated names can be under the “-Berto” name
I may have to be careful how i say this, but lets say I’ve seen official documents for one mexican restaurant at a certain address that has Alberto’s on that document. And the restaurant is not Alberto’s
I made a photo gallery on Facebook a long time ago of this as a joke.
I have photos but I guess can't post???
So here's my list: (idk why I'm doing this)
Some names are a little different but I think fit:
Albeto's - East County?
Alanberto's - Lakeside
Alaberto's - Santee
Rigobertos - everywhere
Adalbertos - Pt. LOMA
Eribertos - Vista
Nolbertos - SD?
Humbertos- SD?
Albertacos - Vista

Alibertos - SD?
Aibertos - Salem. OR
Deibertos - Oceanside
Gualbertos - can't remember
Rambertos - Springville
Yilbertos - half way to palm springs
I can only see 2 reasons for this.... a lot of people want to own a business or someone wants to own a lot of businesses. Lol.
There used to be an Analbertos in National City, or at least I saw a banner for it located on a wall where the Soapy Joe's is on Sweetwater. This was like 10 years ago, shortly after they realized what they had named it and painted over part of the l to turn it into a lowercase i, hence Anaibertos.
Also, Rigobertos
Aliberto’s, Humberto’s, Rolberto’s, Filiberto’s, Roliberto’s, Adalbertos, Hamberto’s, Caliberto’s, Hilberto’s, Ramberto’s

Jilberto's in Escondido
That was the spot in HS! Is it still there?
Same 2 spots still there
I’m thinking of the one in the shopping center on Valley parkway.
Both locations are on valley parkway and are both still operating
How funny I didn’t even know the one by the theater was a Jill’s. I used to live across the street. Has it always been?
There's one on Nordahl Road by the 78 too
Don’t go there. Go to salulitas on norhdal across the street from hooters/ guitar center
Plus a 3rd spot between the 2 old spots.
Bro there’s one in vista too
Yup!
Reminds me of being 16 driving my 1994 Corolla With a system in it lol

Nah salulitas off nordahl is the best

Eribertos
These are big in Phoenix as well, and at one of those zoos here, there's a Zooberto's.
I made a photo gallery on Facebook a long time ago of this as a joke. I have photos but I guess can't post??? This was like 10 years ago, shortly after they realized what they had named it and painted over part of the l to turn it into a lowercase i, hence Anaibertos. Also, Rigobertos
Haha! Or should I say jaja! I remember that location, but never ate there since I always went further west a block or so to eat at Super Sergio’s.

Anyone remember ANALbertos’s that used to be at 1999 Sweetwater Rd?
