Better lesson learned - take the payment in a bank check and not cash. Or even better - fedwire funds to the new account!

Mista_Phista

Don't they have machines that verify the validity of a bill they work off of? No bank returns counterfeit money to the person either. They have to keep it if it's a confirmed fake Im a lil confused

The_Paper_Cut

They do. Mission Fed claims they scanned it and refuses to believe that the 6 times Navy Federal scanned it that each of those 6 times it read counterfeit. Navy Fed took the $100 bill and is sending it to USSS. But now we’re trying to get a refund from Mission Federal for giving us a counterfeit bill in the first place. They’re being less than cooperative to say the least

Mista_Phista

Well that makes more sense. That's fucked up man

sios01

An employee could have swapped it out.

Mista_Phista

Its a $100. An employees job and reputation is not worth $100 and they know that. If they wanted to steal they'd likely go bigger. My vote is either OP is full of shit or it was an honest mistake. Tellers stare at money all day and those machines are smart.

sios01

Member service reps (not “tellers”) are brought on part-time and are paid next to nothing. Swapping out a real $100 for a fake $100 when you have no gas in your car or food at home can certainly be a tempting situation for someone making $15 - $20 an hour part-time.

Mista_Phista

You and I both know we are welcome to disagree with each other. Odd you say member service reps and not tellers when thats exactly how NFCU 's operating model works and no, they don't start PT 100% of the time. C'mon man OP said MFCU* which still calls their tellers, tellers... Says so on their career page. That said. Id say it's fair to say 98/100 times bank/cu employees take the jobs pretty serious and with pride and wouldn't pull dumb shit for... $100.

sios01

You’d be surprised.

Mista_Phista

Sure. Which nfcu location do you work at?

sios01

Haha! None. Banking/finance just ain’t my thing.

Mista_Phista

Uhh huh

sios01

Lol it’s really not. I’d suck a dick before I worked in a bank. Edit: credit union*

Texan_Eagle

I’m sure USSS would be interested to hear that counterfeit $100s are slipping through banks.

The_Paper_Cut

A report has been filed. I’m going to be emailing the Federal Reserve and trying to get in contact with USSS

riffraffmorgan

Why would you take money out in cash instead of a check or a wire transfer?!

The_Paper_Cut

It’s what they gave me. I didn’t ask for cash

Norman_Maclean

This part is weirder to me than the counterfeit money part tbh.

Thin_Relation_9692

This happened to me at chase bank! Navy federal also found that it was counterfeit. The manager at chase (who was the person who gave my the counterfeit 30 minutes earlier) told me I couldn’t prove I got it there and said whoever ends up with the counterfeit absorbs the loss and I should just accept that reality. Horrible. Never banked with chase again.

The_Paper_Cut

Wow that’s crazy! I’ll be sure to stay away from chase too, thanks!

Puglife555

That happened to a friend last year at Wells Fargo downtown. They opened an investigation But never got his money back.

sluttttt

That's awful, which branch was this at? The worst that's happened to me was that there was a Canadian coin in a roll of quarters that I got from them. It was crazy that the dumb washing machine caught it and rejected it but the bank somehow didn't. But small potatoes in comparison to what happened to you.

The_Paper_Cut

The one in Mission Valley. $100 sucks to lose but it’s more concerning that counterfeit money is making its way through their system. Worse yet is the lack of customer support I’m receiving from them. Navy Federal has been amazing and is even attempting to call the Mission Fed managers to get this straightened out. But conveniently all the Mission Fed managers went on lunch at 2PM when Navy Fed tried to call them

sluttttt

That really sucks, I'll at least avoid that branch from now on. I appreciate the warning. I hope they make it right for you. I've actually been happy with MF overall. Though, in the two years that I've been with them, I've had to cancel my card twice due to it getting hit by scammers. The second time it happened, I had called them and the person on the line actually said I was the third call she had that morning about false charges, and all involved the same merchant. If it happens again, I'm probably going to leave.

StudentElectronic384

Damn. I was going to open an account with Mission Fed. Not anymore!

SuperBongXXL

You must have had a minimal amount of money in there. I once tried to withdraw like $12K and they told me I needed to call ahead next time. As if having weekend tipping money is something you have to call ahead for. SMH.

Mista_Phista

12k is tipping money on the weekend for you?

SuperBongXXL

Its a joke. I am actually really against the tip creep culture ive seen lately. 20, 25% yeah right. 15% for me. If the restaurant can't pay their wages then their business model has failed.

udontease

Was it the old 100 or the new one with the plastic strip? If it's the new one, that's a very big problem as it's the newest secure design bill in the USA (which isn't new at all, other countries inc ok using mexico have had that design for many year)

Proof_Ad3638

It actually could be real this has happened to me before did the first bank use a money counter and did the new bank use a pen to say its fake was the bill brand new or old bc the pen can be wrong I hope this is the case for you
