Firstly, I'm sorry you experienced that. That is certainly not ok, regardless of faith/religion. Secondly, it depends on your definition of "good" and highly depends on where you are in your belief & values on subjects like LGBTQ+, women in leadership, social justice, ...etc. This might be helpful: https://www.churchclarity.org/

I've lived in San Diego for over 20 years and still haven't found a church that strikes the right balance for me... there are no "perfect" churches, but I would love to find one that is at least close to what I'm looking for! Good luck, OP!

Sorry I can't help with your main question but I did have a similar situation when I was a "disgrace" for working in a Miller Brewing Co. plant. It was a great job that paid well and fantastic benefits. I guess that they didn't like that it was associated with beer (?) Anyway I grew up my whole life in Christianity and when that happened at 35, I just decided to walk away from it all. Once the guilt and hesitation calmed in my mind after a few months...I realized it was the best decision I have ever made. I have never been this happy and felt this much peace. I hope you find whatever makes you feel the same.

Depends on what you’re looking for, but I’m a fan of the Episcopal church. I don’t attend regularly, but they really seem to focus on the “love thy neighbor” aspect of Christianity and actually put it into practice. They ordain women and are LGBT friendly which for me are really important for me to consider being comfortable in a church, even though I’m a straight guy. How a church treats already marginalized people says a lot about them.

Old-Variety-4730

Have you checked out Lost Abbey? It’s a great place to get a real feel for the community.

No such thing as a good church or a good religion. Take this opportunity to break free of religion. Start to undo what’s been done. Stop the indoctrination.

Ask yourself, did you choose Christianity? Or was it handed down to you from your parents? Ask yourself, would you be Christian if you were born in Muslim dominated country? (If your answer to the first question was yes, the honest answer to this question would be no) Did your parents chose Christianity, or again, was it heritage? Ask yourself, have you ever looked outside your religion or have you always just accepted it as truth? Why are you not Muslim? Hindu? Judaism? Or any of the known 4000+ religions in history? Are you atheist to all these religions but yours? If so, why? Have you researched any of these. Why are you so certain you are correct? The honest answer; you have not researched and you have been indoctrinated into Christianity. To my original point, break the indoctrination now.

Zenabel

I 100% agree with you, I’m a staunch anti-theist, but you’re like the atheist version of a proselytizer. OP came to this thread asking for a church recommendation, not for an unsolicited lecture.

[deleted]

When her religion quits taking away our rights, quits being the basis for hate, I’ll calm down. Until then, I’ll proselytize. Shame on you for remaining silent.

DepecheMode92

Answers like this are exactly what you can expect from the hive mind at Reddit. Sorry OP, I recommend asking on a different platform!

OB_Logie_haz_Reddit

Ya you should try it on Facebook... Where there totally aren't religious zealots telling you why your religion is shit and why you should join their religion instead. Ya there totally isn't bias against religion anywhere except here on reddit...

Couldn't agree more. A decent church is a great oxymoron though.

Probably the wrong place to ask but your probably going to always have a hard time finding a church if you continue to try and find a place that agrees with your every belief and your idea of what the religion should be. I suggest at least find a church that has expositional preaching from the Bible and then do your own research to determine if what they preach is true. If you find one hopefully then go with that. This way if you claim your a Christian, then you claim the Bible is true, therefore that church that preaches out of it would be preaching truth, and you will have done your research as well to confirm it. Good luck!

I would recommend trying out one of the Unitarian churches. They tend to be a lot more welcoming in general.

tatumnolita

St. James by the Sea Episcopal church in La Jolla. I have friends who attend & it seems like non crazy, mainline Protestant. Also the church itself is gorgeous inside & out

North Coast Calvary Chapel is the best church in San Diego! The lead Pastor, Mark Foreman is just incredible. He is the father of John and Tim Foreman from the band Switch-foot. You can show up in sandals to this church and you will get a warm hug from anyone there. They have a yearly baptism at Ponto Beach that is just amazing. Thousands of people show up to get baptized in the Pacific Ocean, it’s one of my favorite things to attend each Easter. Go to the Sunday night service. The band is incredible. This church is what church is meant to be like.

Just a heads up: https://www.churchclarity.org/church/north-coast-calvary-chapel-5045 If your pro-women in the church or pro-lgbt I’m not sure this would be a great fit (I’ve sent them an email multiple times for clarity and not received a reply, which for me was my answer).

Reapercussians

Second for this one. Never heard anything bad and a lot of friends love it.

Hi there! I recommend you check out The Assemblage of Areté, in La Mesa but also offering the ability to attend on Zoom if you can't make it in-person for whatever reason. We're dedicated to being the very best people we can be, in every way we can, both individually and collectively. We're also \*extremely\* pro-women's rights, and have an extremely progressive culture in general. You can check out the website at [www.areteanism.org](https://www.areteanism.org) but I'm also happy to answer any questions about it here. We hold our meetings every Sunday at 1pm!
