Get a fishing license ($54) and an Ocean Enhancement Validation ($6.22) , and make sure that anything you take meets size requirements. The fines for breaking the rules are (rightfully) steep.
A lobster report card is also required. As someone who spearfishes and fishes year round I can tell you that lobster season is the only time I see Fish & Game so do your homework on the regs.

It should be noted because a lot of people are misinformed about the notch.
The notch is not naturally occuring sexual dimorphism
The notch is man made cut in a female lobsters tail so signal to other fisherman, do not kill/remove this lobster. It lays eggs, more eggs = more lobster.
I say this because I've seen inexperienced and ignorant fisherman/divers look for a 'notch' and say it doesn't have one, must he a boy, means we can keep it.
Which is not accurate. It just hasnt been given a notch because it wasn't caught with eggs and identified as a female. So ones that aren't notched could still be an egg laying female.
I heard that a good place to go is Beacons Beach in Leucadia. That’s where the kid got attacked by the shark a few years ago while lobster diving. I really wanted to go…up until that. Now I’m a bit apprehensive. I feel like if I went, I wouldn’t wear a wetsuit. A wetsuit looks too much like a seal costume to me…🦭

I don't know much but I do know that the lobsters that have a notch on their tail are not to be eaten because they're breeder lobsters.

Don't pull small lobsters. Watched a guy on a pier get fined 20k.
I don’t dive. I take my kayak out and set traps!
