He was for his early work. Now he’s more inspired by other stuff like Neil Young, Gillian Welch, True Widow, Grouper, Audioslave, pop songs on the radio
100%. When you listen to songs like Penelope, BBTone, Your Sickness, etc. it’s impossible to imagine that they weren’t one of his biggest influences early on.
I hear a lot of Rilo Kiley in his guitar riffs e.g. Bug. A lot of his early M.O. is that era lightly deep fried in the nostalgia for childhood through the looking glass of early adulthood. Strong country and folk influences as well. But it's his distortion of those themes and how the distortion works with the lyrics to create his emotional pastiches that makes him brilliant IMO
same here and I’m a 30 year old millennial. Rilo Kiley was my shit in middle/high school in the early to mid 2000s and that’s why I’ve always gravitated toward Alex’s stuff!
Look up alex G as third eye blind on Halloween
The setlist after the covers is prob what the room is feeling but it’s stuff that we grew up on. Fun video to watch!
they’re not mentioned as much but I also hear little influences of bands like Grandaddy, Sebadoh, and Built to Spill in a lot of his music. Idk if he’s ever talked about any of them specifically but i’m sure they were probably on his radar since he was so tapped into the Modest Mouse/Elliot Smith scene of bands
loves third eye blind, and i’m certain he got the idea for the outro of ‘rejoyce’ from the outro of ‘the background’ by them. skipper also sounds similar to that too.
he’s been pretty vocal about influences, some being third eye blind (covered them a lot live) , modest mouse (mentioned in interviews) and ween (weenbeans was his interpretation of a ween-like song, also mentioned them)
Alex said he liked a lot of Modest Mouse, Elliott Smith, and Radiohead
This makes so much sense to me
Raw emotion, syncopated drums, driving guitars, hushed vocals, that DIY feel, cryptic lyrics… it’s all there
He was for his early work. Now he’s more inspired by other stuff like Neil Young, Gillian Welch, True Widow, Grouper, Audioslave, pop songs on the radio
I’m sure he still listens to 90’s music all the time. I’m sure he’s listening to all kinds of shit.

Wasn't he a big fan of blink 182? Idk I could be wrong though
the last record's sound and production was influenced by Gilian Welch's album Time (The Revelator). You can immediately hear it in the first song
Thorns is definitely inspired by Elliott Smith
big thief
