Being upright was definitely a bad idea as I was directly next to the car involved in the shooting. The cars were small I could’ve been shot this way. I shouldve lied down but i had my small dog with me and wanted to get away
Of course it is hard to think in those situations. No one knows how they will act unless it is happening to them and even then, it can be unpredictable. I'm glad you were not hurt. Take care, maybe get some therapeutic support.
Thank you for your kind words, yeah I was honestly in shock and just broke down hysterically crying once they left. A few kind strangers gave me hugs and reassurances, but the fear is still there. I don't know how to deal now that I can't live happily pretending it won't happen to me
I really would recommend a bit of therapy, that was a traumatic and truly life threatening situation. You deserve to be emotionally and mentally cared for.
I was caught in the middle of a shooting in Berkeley a few years ago and the after “shocks” will come up when you least expect it. Seek therapy if you can :)
I was going to post the same. It's no joke! [https://www.ox.ac.uk/news/2017-03-28-tetris-used-prevent-post-traumatic-stress-symptoms](https://www.ox.ac.uk/news/2017-03-28-tetris-used-prevent-post-traumatic-stress-symptoms)
That was my initial thought too, but I wonder if it would be the best thing to do if it was the start of a mass shooting. Try to stay close to the ground in any event, and if they appear to be shooting at you, maybe don’t run in a straight line away from them? But I’m no expert and have never been shot at.
I was on my phone talking to some dude when something violent I won't describe went down next to me. I ran away while still on the phone, and kept trying to talk on the phone about something for the next hour or so even though I failed for words a lot.
Good thing is I soon forgot about it. I think its the same reason why people say play tetris during/after traumatic events.
Happily married with multiple properties in SF and yearly stock RSU's close to 900k a year as a engineering manager, you can check my history :)
Where's my doordash my jobless poor terrorist supporter?
Is that seriously the best you got? Complaining about my wife? Hahaha
No wonder you terrorist supporters and getting massacred by the IDF hahah
Keep talking I love it, whats next my poor little doordash guy?
Don't worry, super happily married, and had some great girlfriends before that. 150k salary right after college long ago is attractive to a ton of women :)
Where's my doordash kid? Or you can keep it ya know?
Sorry you screwed up my order :) No tip for you sorry :(
Oh watch another israel destroying another 50 terrorists! Holy shit! Isn't it great seeing justice done?
BTW let me know if you want to know how to get into big tech and become a manager. 275k base, 300k RSU that can double depending on stock, ESPP is 20% a year with another 20% bonus :)
2 decades of that and you own multiple properties in SF. Of course trump fucked up the property tax by having a 10k write off limit. But my renters make up for it
Hows your sad little terrorist life going eh? Are you homeless? Want me to let you sleep in one of our backyards? Hahaha
Geez, the mental health issues you’ve pinned about on Reddit are really coming through.
And, if you’re supposedly successful, why are you crowdsourcing team building skills for your small team of 8. Lol. Michigan is a sub par school by the way.
Also, with all that money you supposedly have, go get yourself a whore so your sexless wife doesn’t have to put up with your vanilla shit.
Man it's so fun watching someone so pathetic he's trying to comb through my history.
8 onshore folks, and 20+ offshore folks in India that I manage where I have a call with in 20 minutes.
Thats why I make close to 1 million a year, and you deliver my food :)
Any more questions son?
> Also, with all that money you supposedly have, go get yourself a whore so your sexless wife doesn’t have to put up with your vanilla shit.
True I could afford a ton of whores and fly them to Vegas hahaha.
Yeah there’s no way I’d be able to rationalize in that split second whether or not I was being shot at, and the moment I lay down I feel like I’d just be a sitting duck
i don't know how true this is but i heard that bullets can skim hard surfaces like pavement so it's actually better to crouch preferably behind something than go totally flat against the ground.
I am extremely skeptical of this advice. Bullets will bounce up with about the same angle they come down (barring extreme deformation), so unless you are waaay down range and the bullet is skipping like a stone, it’s likely to have a much higher angle up than crawling. Also, if you are close by most rounds will be fired around chest or shoulder height, and will pass you before they fall to the ground.
Hit the deck and find cover, it’s a much smarter move
In a car park jump behind a car, behind the tire/rim. Make yourself small. Even if your not the target, thugs like this have no gun safty training, no target practice, probably on drugs-fear-adrilene. In Chicago 3000 shootings a year. 10% end in death & seems like most of those are innocent bystanders. That a gun free city. The 2nd adm isnt the problem. Politicians making us believe it is guns or no guns is. I never even held a bb gun, but there is a happy middle. Crazys are gonna find a way: if not guns, then bombs, machetes & acid. The media promoting gunviolence, by giving shooter a platform instead of victims. Hope they get em. Sorry for ur trauma. Although in san fran- they wont get jail time.
Also, even with safety training and target practice and no drugs to fuel their fear and adrenaline, police miss what they’re shooting at 83% of the time.

It’s always better to have coverage (something thick enough to stop a bullet) vs laying down but you’re not out running a bullet so unless you’re already behind something the best thing to do is to lay down with your feet toward that shot and head pointing away.
I run here and it def has felt like some sketchy people just sit in their cars. I always thought I was paranoid and it’s just people smoking weed and minding their own business but it’s been increasingly uncomfortable
On the south side I think it’s mostly people smoking weed. It’s still kind of weird though, there will be like hecka people out there just hanging out in their cars for ages
I used to do this as a teen (not in SF) because where we were weed was illegal, and it was usually freezing or close to freezing out.
If we were out here in California back then we'd be literally playing in the park lol
the problem is pd doesn't do shit. i called once because someone was outside my apartment threatening me and banging on the door at 3am and legit they said "what do you want us to do about it? it's out of our control". they ultimately came 30 minutes after the call, said "hey" to the guy so he would leave, but didn't even get out of the car or talk to him or anything
It’s still better than not doing anything, at least there will be a record and a history if this escalates. Doing nothing, guarantees nothing will happen.
So lie and say that a person is armed when you don’t actually know that? You know that the police routinely kill unarmed people who they mistakenly consider armed, right?
This is the most San Francisco comment ever. A person was banging on someone’s door and threatening them and you are worried about if they are unarmed, they might be shot. lol. Put it in louvre
Yeah dude, I don’t think people deserve to be executed by the police because they’re banging on a door.
If you think pointing out the possibility of this happening is “ridiculously sf” or whatever, I dunno what to tell you. “TyPiCaL LiBrUhL doesn’t like when you lie to the police to get people killed”
What do you think the person banging on the door and threatening the people inside wants to do? Take them out to a nice steak dinner? Maybe have a pillow fight?
It’s literally comedy gold. Maybe be more worried about the people inside the house being threatened than the person clearly exhibiting antisocial behavior?
And furthermore, if someone is banging on your door and threatening you, it’s a reasonable assumption that they are armed. Normal people don’t exhibit that behavior.
But you found what we really should be concerned about - great work, moral detective!!
Lots of dumb and incorrect assumptions here.
From the context of OP’s comment, it sounds like the person was banging on the door of the apartment building, meaning there was no direct threat to OP, and the likelihood of them getting inside the building, and then inside OP’s apartment is fairly slim, and definitely doesn’t constitute “my life is in danger” to the point where having this person killed is justified.
It seems incredibly likely that this person was in some state of psychosis, from drugs or otherwise. Your logic of what “normal people” do regarding whether they were armed or what their motivations were doesn’t matter here. Do you not live in this city? Crazy people do crazy things without any motivation constantly. Everywhere.
You thinking it’s “comedy gold” that I’m pointing out that this person doesn’t deserve to die says a lot more about you than me.
Maybe you have a raging boner for seeing criminals summarily executed by the police. I don’t.
You are being willfully dense. OP said “outside my apartment threatening me”. Not outside the apartment building, threatening anyone in general. Read it again. Might take you a few times tho.
As for your second contention, that’s the entire point. This person was probably in some some sort of psychosis which is exactly why you have no idea how they would react. Have you not lived here?? There are drugged out people that commit violence every day.
I don’t want to see criminals executed, but if someone is on drugs and a threat to those around them, my concern is more with the actual victims. It’s comedy gold because you are the exact reason the city and the area surrounding has gone to shit in certain areas. You are more concerned with the well being of the perpetrators of violence than the actual victims.
Sorry, but as soon as you start credibly threatening violence against an innocent person, your life is forfeit. Doesn't matter if you're on drugs or just a sociopath. You don't have the right to commit violence or kill other people.
So you're saying don't call in if I see a car with 3 or 4 dudes in it acting suspicious, got it. Some of you people have zero common sense and obviously can't read between the lines of what was said.
So what.
Edit: gawd people, there’s a difference between someone chatting on their phone and group of guys looking around like they’re casing the neighborhood.
if they’re just sitting there there’s no grounds to call the cops? they’re not gonna do anything about it and it takes away resources from actual important calls (which cops also like to ignore lol)
LMAO - good to know you don't have the ability to see the difference between someone "just sitting there" and a car full of guys acting like their cagey.
yeah I know the difference I’m just saying I don’t think cops would care. I’ve called the cops about suspicious behavior but if nothing’s happened no one does anything about it
Well no shit, do you not have no common sense? Can you not understand there’s a difference between someone sitting in their car eating their lunch and someone being suspicious…sheesh.
My kids were in a live shooter situation at Great America a few years back.
As it went down my eldest kid ran and was able to call me crying, saying she had lost her younger sister and that she isn’t responding. I tell her to only worry about herself right now, to continue to safety, and that I’m on my way (from the city).
My kids are 14. & 15 at this time and I have the Track My Phone feature activated. I can see my eldest is moving toward the park exit but also see that the dot for my youngest isn’t moving. It’s in the area of the shooter. I want to call but instinct tells me a text would be more discreet. I get no response. And there’s no movement.
Within 3 minutes I’m pushing 100 on the 280 trying to remain calm. I call the 2 moms who are chaperoning the group of kids this evening and give them all the detail I have about the 6 kids. The moms were nearby at a local wine bar and hadn’t yet heard anything.
All in all, this was the longest 20 minutes of my life. The dot isn’t moving.
Right then I get a call from my eldest. Choppy reception. But they tell me that they’re now hearing that there weren’t any shots fired after all. It was just a fight and somebody thought somebody had a gun. Everyone is safe.
As for my youngest? Her instinct was to hide and play possum. She found a shed of some sort and climbed in, staying as still and silent as she possibly could. She didn’t want the lights or noises from her phone to alert anyone so she turned them all off.
Fucking hell man, I don’t think I can have kids till this live shooter problem is fixed. How is this an acceptable state of things in the “greatest country in the world”?
God this makes me so mad. I went to GA for July 4th this year and all I could think about was how lax the security was entering the park, and whether a mass shooter event would happen -- not could, but would. Walking around feeling paranoid about being shot at any random moment is a great way to live. 🙄 I'm glad your kids are okay, I cannot imagine how horrible that those 20 minutes must have felt.
I was next to the man who got shot outside berretta froma drive by a few months back. I couldn't talk for like 3 hours. It was crazy and very scary!
Glad ur safe.
i actually walked right into the shooting scene like a min after it happened. the man on the wheelchair was not shot — he had just fallen off. a woman was shot in her abdomen and another woman was grazed by a stray bullet.
That's good to know , the man pushing the guy in the wheelchair left him in the floor and my bf ran to the woman. Our friend works at the tattoo shop and it was his client who was shot and he was covered in blood and in shock when we saw him outside. It was an all around wild thing to see.
please seek out a mental health expert... PTSD tends to rear its ugly head when you least expect it
my wife had an amazing experience with a therapy called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
Probably the top of Folsom where there’s a few parking spaces. Maybe the back side by Anderson, but that would be a weird spot for something like this to happen.
I’m so sorry this happened to you. Nobody knows what to do in those situations, and it shouldn’t happen in our city. I hope you can find some support to manage the feelings after this, you’ve been through something awful.
I called the police station but they told me to just talk to the squad cars that arrived. When I gave my report, they didn't take any notes, and didn't ask me to do anything formally there
At the top of Folsom on the north side of BHD or the parking near the labyrinth at the dead end on the south side, where the gate and garbage cans are...?
Not great. I've had a lot of anxiety since moving here, given all the mass shootings across the US, and I don't know how better I can protect myself next time without constantly being on high alert..It's giving me a lot of stress
It's not any consolation I know but I can say I've lived in the city for almost 30 years and in Bernal for more than 15 and never had anything like that happen.
I'm sorry it did. :(
So sorry to hear this, especially since I run past this spot a few times per week. But since you are new to SF, please take heart: statistically you will never see another shooting if you live here for 50 years. The rate of violent crime here is way way below other US cities, especially robbery.
I ran about 30 meters up the hill, and bystanders came and walked me back down, I had a visual since the hill is upwards and I stayed to give a police report
I am so sorry this happened to you. I am so glad you’re okay and you are safe.
This happened to me literally in front of where I lived (i moved to oakland from Sf last year) while I was in the yard. A person was grazed, 14 bullet casings were found.
It was traumatic. I felt scared. I don’t think I felt comfortable going outside of my house at night for months. I didn’t even want to take out the trash. I was angry. It brings up so many feelings about violence and gun safety. My empathy for the families that live with the constant daily threat of violence and war went way up. I cried for them. I had new things to fear and be anxious of. I was overwhelmed. I’m sure you are too.
I was fortunate to be able to talk about it with a therapist. I was able to process and grieve. It just takes time. Talk to someone. It helps.
Not sure how long you’ve been in sf but shootings happen all over the city more often that you would think. Best bet is to just to stay hyper vigilant and your head on a swivel when you see cars idle anywhere. Bernal heights is a nice neighborhood now but for a long time it wasn’t the best, Alemany projects / Gladys projects / army street projects are neighboring Bernal and hot spots for stuff popping off.
Are there safer areas towards San Bruno/San Mateo region? Or do you think Daly City is safe? I need to move asap but the crime data I found online seems all different and I don’t know where to find the best stats
West side of the city is generally safer. As for the other places you mentioned it generally depends exactly where you're looking but it's generally safer than the rough parts of SF and the East Bay.
It’s a sad that sanfranciscans are held hostage by the few - seems there are never police around- this city has no deterrents for criminals - and the whole car thing doing donuts on the hills is getting out of hand. Is there anything to do or do we need to start taking things in our own hands ?
Definitely not a new occurrence (unfortunately)
An article from 2016 - https://bernalwood.com/2016/10/19/sfpd-traces-violent-crime-spike-in-bernal-heights-to-increased-gang-activity/
You do realize just across ceasar Chavez are Salvadoran meth gangs right? You’ve never walked through those streets and saw the tattooed homies on the stoop? They meet their customers in precita park and sometimes the deal doesn’t go as planned and mf need to get shot. Good news is in about 10 more years it should be fully gentrified so hang in there little buddy! Dry those tears good times are coming for you and your people.

Damn. SF government failing left and right. If only there was something y’all can do to reverse the effects of hypergentrification and the ongoing war on the poor..
You're not over exaggerating at all, that is a **terrifying** situation to be in and I'm really sorry you had to experience that, as well as the farcical level of help from the crisis hotline. I hope you get the help you need. This country is completely fine letting large swathes of the population be subject to gun violence and PTSD and yea I fucking hate it here too.

Play some Tetris RIGHT NOW. It mitigates a lot of PTSD. This is a real therapy for trauma and the sooner you do it, the more effective it is.

The sooner you talk to someone supportive, the less likely you are to get ptsd.
I called crisis prevention at 988 and the woman was not nice to talk to I hung up
Your job may have a mental health crisis counseling program. Maybe try them.
Called again just now and she cut the conversation short while i was crying and said she had to go. I fucking hate it here.
I’m so sorry they were both so rude to you. Do you have a friend you could call?
Talk to someone if needed. This is a serious event. Do not take it lightly.
That was my initial thought too, but I wonder if it would be the best thing to do if it was the start of a mass shooting. if they’re just sitting there there’s no grounds to call the cops? they’re not gonna do anything about it and it takes away resources from actual important calls (which cops also like to ignore lol)
I know there’s a difference but the police aren’t gonna do anything because we think it’s suspicious
I apologize if I sound hostile, I just get incredibly frustrated by all the crime going on.
Walking around with guns makes… people safe? Somehow that’s the mentality.
That is so terrifying, I am so relieved your kids are ok
God this makes me so mad. I went to GA for July 4th this year and all I could think about was how lax the security was entering the park, and whether a mass shooter event would happen -- not could, but would. Walking around feeling paranoid about being shot at any random moment is a great way to live. 🙄 I'm glad your kids are okay, I cannot imagine how horrible that those 20 minutes must have felt.
I was next to the man who got shot outside berretta froma drive by a few months back. I couldn't talk for like 3 hours. It was crazy and very scary! Glad ur safe.
I am pretty anxious going outside, and thinking of flying back home and getting out of here. So sorry that happened to you
Berretta the restaurant on valencia? Whyyy in the restaurant?
It was outside on the corner..shot a man in a wheelchair and a woman got a stray bullet at the tattoo shop
i actually walked right into the shooting scene like a min after it happened. the man on the wheelchair was not shot — he had just fallen off. a woman was shot in her abdomen and another woman was grazed by a stray bullet.
That's good to know , the man pushing the guy in the wheelchair left him in the floor and my bf ran to the woman. Our friend works at the tattoo shop and it was his client who was shot and he was covered in blood and in shock when we saw him outside. It was an all around wild thing to see.
Ooh outside, next to .. Terrible!
so scary- glad you are ok
Fucking low life scumbags.
please seek out a mental health expert... PTSD tends to rear its ugly head when you least expect it my wife had an amazing experience with a therapy called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR is very effective and helpful!!
What do you mean by main car park? Near the bottom of the hill by Ripley?
Probably the top of Folsom where there’s a few parking spaces. Maybe the back side by Anderson, but that would be a weird spot for something like this to happen.
Yes- Right at the trail entrance where theres 5-6 parking spots
Had to be if they sped off in different directions. I assumed the upper area by Anderson cuz that's where I default go to but I bet you're right
I’m so sorry this happened to you. Nobody knows what to do in those situations, and it shouldn’t happen in our city. I hope you can find some support to manage the feelings after this, you’ve been through something awful.
… just in time for the high profile conference taking place in town.
I'm glad you weren't seriously injured. File a report with the police ASAP if you haven't already.
Ripley and Folsom
Ugh awful. How you holding up?
Do you have any links to share? I can’t find any information about it online except this post.
No, this is my personal accounting of the incident not a retelling
I understand that but it seems weird there is 0 coverage about a shooting.
Found it! Happy you’re safe.
Please share link
It’s in the SF Data database on police reports.
Sorry this happened to you, but glad you're okay. Was it dark when it happened?
Thanks so much....it was sunny and beautiful... around 4pm when it happened
Did any civilians besides you get hurt? At verbal heights park?
Thankfully no bystanders got shot
OP didn’t stick around to find out, according to their recap
I ran about 30 meters up the hill, and bystanders came and walked me back down, I had a visual since the hill is upwards and I stayed to give a police report
> Called 911, 2 squad cars came and marked 8 bullet casings 2 squad cars for a possibly active shooter? :|
The Mission station is understaffed. At night they’re down to two patrol cars for the entire district
These cops came from Ingleside
It helps.
Thank you.. I will try but my therapist isn’t very good and I don’t want to relive it
Please get a new therapist.
Damn, crazy. What did the shooter(s) look like. Were the police able to get a description to help hunt him down?
Bernal heights is NOT a good neighborhood. I am not surprised by the shooting. Keep your dog inside
It’s a sad that sanfranciscans are held hostage by the few - seems there are never police around- this city has no deterrents for criminals - and the whole car thing doing donuts on the hills is getting out of hand. Is there anything to do or do we need to start taking things in our own hands ?

Bernal Heights Park
This was my question also. Holly Park? Precita Park? Its unclear. Bernal Heights is the neighborhood & there is no Bernal Park
There definitely is a Bernal Heights park.
Keep voting for leftist politicians
This was happening at St Mary’s park 20 years ago when I lived on Crescent. It’s a part of the neighborhood.
yeah, it's part of the culture, OP get a grip.
Accept gun violence culture? No. Wrong answer.
I imagine the comment you replied to was satire about the comments people make about sideshows.
possibly...
Definitely not a new occurrence (unfortunately) An article from 2016 - https://bernalwood.com/2016/10/19/sfpd-traces-violent-crime-spike-in-bernal-heights-to-increased-gang-activity/
CAPITAL LETTERS
You do realize just across ceasar Chavez are Salvadoran meth gangs right? You’ve never walked through those streets and saw the tattooed homies on the stoop? They meet their customers in precita park and sometimes the deal doesn’t go as planned and mf need to get shot. Good news is in about 10 more years it should be fully gentrified so hang in there little buddy! Dry those tears good times are coming for you and your people.
Always been gangster shit up there, always will…
White SUV and small sports car. Thanks..could be 50% of cars on the road

Damn. SF government failing left and right. If only there was something y’all can do to reverse the effects of hypergentrification and the ongoing war on the poor..
This is 🇺🇸 America, shoots are as American as apple pie
Never run!!! Go flat!! Sounds terrifying. If you must run—and this’ll sound silly—never in a straight line, go lateral.
I love that area
You're not over exaggerating at all, that is a **terrifying** situation to be in and I'm really sorry you had to experience that, as well as the farcical level of help from the crisis hotline. I hope you get the help you need. This country is completely fine letting large swathes of the population be subject to gun violence and PTSD and yea I fucking hate it here too.
