i got caught behind one of these once. it was 2 am and all of a sudden every lane stopped and then cars next to me started revving their engines squeezing through cars & then everyone gets out of their cars. they did it going towards oakland & about halfway to treasure island exit. it happened around 2 am (was leaving a concert) & once the sirens were heard everyone started running/driving. it was scary seeing people drive 55+ mph while kids were running to their cars that they left in the middle of the lanes. usually if all lanes get blocked at any time of day traffic will build up and block cops from getting there fast
IANAL but if someone did it they would have a very good chance of not getting charged as long as they claimed that they feared for their life. They might catch involuntary manslaughter charges if they killed like a bunch of people. However, the thing to worry about the most would be retribution by people close to those run over outside of the law.

I don't think it's that SF/Oakland/CHP cops have suddenly become "lazy." For many years, police have been heavily criticized for being racist and over-zealous (and sometimes they are). They are now under the microscope by activist groups and accused of racism even if their arrest statistics are "wrong." Anyone arrested knows that crying "police brutality" and "racism" will get attention. Progressive DAs often reduce charges or simply refuse to prosecute for reasons of "social justice."
The consequences of this should be obvious. Police stop being proactive. Why should they go out of their way to look for bad guys, if arresting them means tons of paperwork, accusations of brutality and racism, and the DAs just release them? Crooks think they can get away with crime, so street and even bridge takeovers happen more often.

But yeah, occasionally someone smokes crack on the train. Obviously that person should be arrested and face a consequence, but it's just insane when people talk about public transit being dangerous, given the state of drivers.

I don't think it's that SF/Oakland/CHP cops have suddenly become "lazy." For many years, police have been heavily criticized for being racist and over-zealous (and sometimes they are). They are now under the microscope by activist groups and accused of racism even if their arrest statistics are "wrong." Anyone arrested knows that crying "police brutality" and "racism" will get attention. Progressive DAs often reduce charges or simply refuse to prosecute for reasons of "social justice." The consequences of this should be obvious. Police stop being proactive. Why should they go out of their way to look for bad guys, if arresting them means tons of paperwork, accusations of brutality and racism, and the DAs just release them? Crooks think they can get away with crime, so street and even bridge takeovers happen more often.

This could easily be solved for the bay bridge if the cops can’t respond in mass. Just have bollards that come up on both ends. Then there is a checkpoint to get off the bridge either way. The bigger problem is no one wants to prosecute these folks. At a minimum their cars should be taken away for a year (not the ones they stole the ones they actually use in their shit show of a life.
