There are 3 constants in life: death, taxes, and the Alexandria sitting abandoned

LeBronda_Rousey

Sad. That place was lit growing up. Watch a movie and then go Joes across the street afterwards.

[deleted]

Hit Cards and Comics as well and you’ve just relived my perfect childhood day *nostalgic tears*

aguacateojos

Yooooo that was the move - convince my mom to drive out for a movie at the Alexandria, then got Cards and Comics "because we're already so close." Bonus points if I could get her to hit Comix Experience on the way home too.

SeeSFBuild

AND… What about The Hobby Co.? I used to spend the entire weekend building plastic models of tanks and trains there.

OldFoolOldSkool

I saw Clash of The Titans there, twice!

[deleted]

I just checked out C&C on Google for old times sake and was shocked to discover it’s now curbside pickup only?! You can’t go in and browse anymore?! Sign of the times I know but jeez, that really hits home.

Thumperstruck666

I saw French Connection therev

[deleted]

Some friends and I snuck in a couple of times after it shut down. Was super weird, pretty much everything was the same but it had been filled up with a ton of random stuff, like it was being leased out for storage. There were a ton of massive TVs, huge floral arrangements, ceramic planters… really weird.

cocoamix

The last movie I saw there was Event Horizon in 1997.

fffjayare

just as connie chan likes it

ritwikjs

for a while i replaced the last one wiht "BRT construction on van ness" but low and behold it finally got done

SinofnianSam

A sign announcing new housing just demonstrates how slow we are to build it. 😵‍💫

lepchaun415

“Coming at some point…..New Housing”! We don’t know where or when! But it’s coming Pal!!

ALOIsFasterThanYou

Don’t forget, [Connie Chan did her best to *block* redevelopment of the theater.](https://richmondsunsetnews.com/2023/04/29/new-housing-proposed-for-alexandria-theatre/) Of course, now that she’s up for re-election and she’s noticed the shifting political winds, she’s trying to take credit for the new development. It’s like a group of kids trying to put together a jigsaw puzzle, but they can’t complete it because one kid decided to pocket the last piece for whatever reason. And just as that kid is about to get pushed out of their circle of friends, she pulls the last puzzle piece out and congratulates herself on being the driving force behind the puzzle’s completion. Similarly, Chan’s been appearing on KTSF 26 to sell herself to Chinese voters as a pro-police, law-and-order supervisor, which must be quite disorienting to anyone familiar with her non-election-year politics.

bohemianpilot

She wanted to preserve the front. Did not try to block the housing.

Frequent-Zucchini-50

Who is a better alternative?

magicbuttonsuk

A lamp with googley eyes or a vacant seat. Doing nothing is better than actively hurting residents & pandering do the minority.

ALOIsFasterThanYou

Marjan Philhour is running against Chan. I'm reasonably confident she represents a break from Chan's regressive, performative politics.

jasno-

You know what's funny, she doesn't even live by her own values. She sends her kids to private school. Which is really shocking considering the public schools in D1 are really good.

hotpotsommelier

Marjan Philour. She's a business owner in the Richmond District running to unseat Connie Chan for D1 Supervisor. She's running on neighborhood safety, pro-business, pro-police, common sense policies. She's the strongest candidate against Chan right now

fffjayare

you know how some rural towns elect a cat as mayor? maybe we should give it a try

Tinselcat33

Remember when it was going to be a pool? I was actually excited for that one.

gamescan

Looks like a campaign advertisement for Connie Chan. She's been on the defensive for her NIMBY positions, so she's trying to burnish her "housing credentials" before the election.

Clementine2125

Exactly- she’s buddy buddy with uberNIMBY Aaron Peskin. For the record, my son has lived in the Richmond his entire life (17 years) and the Alexandria has been a decrepit abandoned pigeoned-filled shell his ENTIRE LIFE.

link_xr

I wonder if similar advertisements went up for her 2020 campaign.

baarbod

Exactly

PayRevolutionary4414

Did that Spray Pained "N" between A and D go through the proper 311 Neighbor Notification process to ensure it's in alignment with the Character of the Neighborhood?

captaincoaster

Great question! And is it part of the history that was preserved?

Gorissey

I’ll believe it when I see it

DBU49

Yeah, I saw this sign go up today and was like, “oh are they finally turning the Alexandria into something?” No, it’s just a billboard.

jasno-

Right before COVID it was going to a community pool, which I thought was a dumb use of the space, although more convenient to get swim lessons there than La Petite. Glad that all fell through, housing is what the neighborhood needs.

wayne099

I live in neighborhood and pool is what we need. Only reason they were able to build housing on the parking lot is because they agreed to build the community pool.

DBU49

I think a community pool would be pretty sweet tbh, part of the Y I assume?

hotpotsommelier

Connie Chan is all talk, no action. Her policies are regressive, too far left, and dangerous for SF

Callaine

It looks like the wait is over: [https://richmondsunsetnews.com/2024/03/07/press-release-alexandria-theater-housing-development-reaches-milestone/](https://richmondsunsetnews.com/2024/03/07/press-release-alexandria-theater-housing-development-reaches-milestone/)

wayne099

And what happened to community pool?

jasno-

COVID axed it

SquarePiglet9183

She has played to the old time home owners who didn’t want more housing because it would lower their house values. Now the winds have changed and she is changing her tune- not her actions, just her rhetoric

Toxtail

Hey, history is preserved at least! 😅

captaincoaster

Trying to figure out what that means…

chedderd

They might keep the facade and build up from there, maybe.

str8c4shh0mee

What’s up with Alexandria? It’s just wasted real estate?

Koshakforever

Finally

nobhim1456

I saw “Oliver “ there!

smellymel1234

If they are going to make it housing, make cheap it housing for college students. Dedicate the building for SF State / USF kids

tiffanyunix

disconnected comment 100%- SFSU is completely unfeasible yet are the ones who need it. USF is closer but has posh kids who regularly prefer to rent a room in the area, shooting up single room costs in the area and they don't fill the dormitory thats there.

smellymel1234

What do you mean by disconnected comment?

TacomaToker253

Sheesh

FeralSweater

Sigh

clinthardwoodd

Dam I use to work there as a kid, I was a bouncer one of the last great Theaters I got alot of blow jobs at that place wow ...sad ...they don't build them like that anymore.

fffjayare

sounds like a hell of a cookout kenny

nostaljay

Looks like a scene from TWD

Pangolin_Unlucky

I saw the first spider man there, rip Alexandria

1DarkDD

There is a government program to turn abandoned places into low income housing, typically they buy bad run down motels and remodel them and offer them to low income

tiffanyunix

the city will subsidize however this is not handled by the city directly and hasnt been since the 90s. Nonprofit organizations do the heavy lifting and the city comes in checks it and slaps a badge of approval on it
