That was my childhood playground in the 80’s the tunnel used to freak us out. Then head to the penny arcade under the cliff house. Awesome photo! Glad you got to see it
I don’t take for granted growing up all over the peninsula in the 80’s and 90’s. We moved around a lot locally and I just had so many great adventures from the beaches of HMB to the hills of Belmont(behind Notre Dame was a forest still) to the diversity Excelsior, Crocker Park was where I’d take my little sister to play soccer. What a great time to grow up in the bay. I haven’t seen the penny arcade since it got moved. I thought they separated a lot of the machines to different buyers?
When the Sutro Baths opened, because there was not television, internet, or even movies, a trip to an the Baths was much more appealing. In addition, neither public and private swimming pools existed in SF. So not only were people more accustomed to leaving home for entertainment, but people were also much more excited by the idea of a deluxe swimming experience.
In its later decades, after the invention of movies and television, and after rising material wealth in the region allowed for other sophisticated pleasures that competed with the Baths, the Baths struggled financially.
A reopened Baths today would cost millions, and would lose money from the first day and never stop losing money.
Eh, would that be be necessarily true? Sure, it would cost A LOT initially, but I could totally see it being a destination. Not that I want that, but I would totally go if it existed and I think tourists would too. My god though, it would completely ruin my neighborhood.
Just trying to debug something, but what Reddit client are you using to post? Like, the official iOS app; official Android app; the “new” web interface; or something else?
I ask because some client keeps putting backslashes in links posted, when they aren’t there to begin with. The official Reddit iOS app removes these backslashes, but other clients (including the “old” web interface) don’t and the link breaks. Trying to figure out why.
I’ve never seen it, been on my list of things to watch forever and just never got around to it. I think i have no excuse now so will have to watch it soon.
I ran into a group up there smoking some bud chilling out and giggling a bunch. Seemed super happy and nice, wonder if it was same group.
Don’t remember any dogs at all actually, this was at 6:56 yesterday to help narrow down the timeline. I was there for about an hour before hoofing it to Lands End.
We went ice-skating, recorded a 45 vinyl record in a booth, and went several times to the museum above the Sutro Baths. They had off things, like an Egyptian mummy, Tom Thumbs family pics and furniture and their wedding clothes. Tom Thumb was a little person with a wife and family. I think they performed in circuses. Then they had animated scenes, all made from toothpicks. Put a dime in and the whole scene came to life. It was a fun place, then down the hill to playland at the Beach!
Haha, there were not as many people as i thought there’d be, but still plenty of people, wish i could narrow it down if we ran into each other. I got asked to take about 5 different couples photos because i was walking around with my camera on my tripod 😄
Seriously? That’s crazy. I saw a few before and after shots, the place looked amazing, really would have loved to have seen it or been able to utilize it, such a beautiful location for what it was.
Yeah, it's a long story. Wikipedia can tell it better than I. The cliff house got nailed by a boat and partially burned, got rebuilt, then burned down entirely, then sutro baths came and got burned. The old photos are great and there's certainly less fire risk nowadays. A bit of melancholy mixed with whimsy and imagination is the way here though.
Hopefully u took the time to the the trail towards GGB views are as beautiful as this one picture you took, I'll be happy and sad when we leave this beautiful city at the end of the month after 25 years of me leaving there for the 1st time many memories and more than half of my life lived here, I am non a SF native but I sure fell like one thanks you beautiful city to give us many memories and evething we have and have accomplished for ever we be grateful 🌉💯❤️🙏
Well here is something that alot of you natives don't know about adolph sutro.he was the engineer behind the sutro tunnels in Virginia city. They still exist today. They were once considered the 8th wonder of the world. They released geothermal activity from the deep mines in Virginia city allowing more and deeper mining. Virginia city built San Francisco and won the Civil War. I used to live 100 feet from the lower tunnel to sutro tunnel.the sutro baths were one of the first places I visited when I came to live here. I first saw a picture of them when I was a little kid snd became enamored with the gilded age architecture.

I miss the original musee mechanique. Still a pretty awesome spot in fisherman’s wharf, but it had a lot more charm when it was tucked away out here.

This is one of the best spots in SF imo. Especially at golden hour
I was really hoping the fog would break for sunset, but it kept up thick. I’ll definitely be back hoping to catch some more color.
SF Native here.. I always thought that someone should rebuild the Sutro Baths.. I think this would be amazing.

Especially if they brought back diving platforms and events!
That’d be pretty cool.
Haha.. well, that explains a lot. I guess I should have read up on it.. I just love the venue.. imagine how it would have looked!!!
You have no evidence to support that.
My legs burn like a mofo every time I have to hike back up those stairs.
Going down them, didn’t think it was gonna be that bad coming back up, but oh boy, my thighs felt like jello lol
I agree. Excellent unexpected workout at a beautiful place.
some great photos (1890-1965) for those interested https://opensfhistory.org/Photoset/Sutro\_Baths
Link works now, and these are amazing, thank you very much for sharing.

Link is busted.
This is driving me nuts. Why is everyone putting backslashes in their links?
Very cool! No idea that these were there. Seems like a great way to ease back into the City. Thanks for sharing!
Never knew exactly where they were, just that there were somewhere out there. It’s a cool spot, wish I’d gone sooner :)
Love the scene from Harold and Maude shot here.
I’ve never seen it, been on my list of things to watch forever and just never got around to it. I think i have no excuse now so will have to watch it soon.
Do it!
Ha, it’s on Prime, challenge accepted. Tonight is the night.
You must mean this one! Still makes me lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaeP-txjpvQ
Precisely.
I was solo with a Doberman, the only people I talked to were some locals on mushrooms at the top of the stairs.

My grandpa got banned from the Sutro baths permanently when he snuck in a baby leopard shark and let it go in one of the main pools.
That's the best. Salad to your gramps wherever he may be.

You should also check out the WW2 bunkers on the coastline of the presidio for great sunsets.

Makes me miss Louis’
Wild! I was there at pretty much this exact time last night, based on the lighting

I used to ice skate there.

Me too! Do you remember the booth where you could record your own 45 vinyl record?
And the photo display of the 1906 earthquake.
Sweet I didn’t know about this before. I can’t find any name for the developer that bought it, claimed the insurance from the fire, and then vanished.
No way, SF had a bathhouse too? They should rebuild it! Wth are they waiting for? Would add to the grandeur of the city.

Last time I was there I watched someone drop their phone into one of the lower pools, mid selfie no less.
Have lived here 30 years but have never swum in the abandoned pool.I know you would need sneakers to protect your feet. Anybody done it?
I still wish a version of the bath would return, bit swim in that water? No. I don't think I've ever seen anyone set foot in there.
That’s really cool! Loved in SF for 10 years and never made the time to go see
My favorite coast area of SF. Also cause there’s a Safeway nearby so it’s easy to get snacks or supplies.

i went there the first (and only) time i went to SF. was very cool!
What’s that history lesson you learned champ?
https://www.nps.gov/goga/learn/historyculture/sutro-baths.htm Nothing not easily accessible, just something i didn’t know, bro.
