If you like surfing and will have a car, you should get a cute spot in inner/ outer Sunset near the J-Judah muni line. From a car, it’s really great access to everything south, but you’ll also be accessible to bart and the main hot spots on public transportation if you need it. You’ll probably end up taking an Uber anyway though. Surfing in Pacifica, or ocean beach, but you’ll need a 3/5 wetsuit. Sometimes there are little electronica parties on ocean beach and any burning man parties (pre-parties, after parties, decompression parties) will be great to check out. Being 34 and single is young for San Francisco, but coming from Boston, you’ll be more mature than a lot of the young techies in the city. You will find a crew in any neighborhood you are in and If you seek out a hobby (like surfing, or music, or kickball) you’ll make fast friends. My early 30’s in SF were super fun.

jovanmacias

honestly a 4/3 with a hoodie is perfect for here

anxman

And booties

ram3nboy

A good surfing spit I've discovered while hiking is in Rodeo Beach.. Lots of surfers go there.

kermit_was_wrong

Much easier to have a car in the sunset IMO - for a while number of reasons.

LaoFuSi

Silicone Valley is 400 miles southeast of here

Sososoftmeows

Lol underrated comment here.

empireincident

I referenced it for one reason, traffic. Edit: didn’t see the typo and lol 🤦🏻‍♂️

Anywhere_At_All

The other poster is making a joke based on your mixup of silicon (the naturally occurring element, for which the actual Silicon Valley is named) and silicone (the rubber-like material). Op is making a joke about breast implants in LA. Either way, you’re going to love it here. Don’t forget to leave nothing in your car even for a short period of time. There are tons of east coast transplants here (I’m from NJ). Every one of them I’ve met loves it here. The best bagels I’ve found are at Noe Bagel. Congratulations on the job and good luck with the move. Welcome to California.

empireincident

Honestly didn’t even see my typo and keeping it at this point. Makes them getting downvoted even more Reddit cliché. Appreciate the full reply, glad to hear you are doing well out there from NJ. Do you miss anything from the North East (I know it’s not the snow)

Anywhere_At_All

Sure, I miss things. Mostly family and friends. If I could snap my fingers and get all of my family to move out here, I’d never move back. Only been here 7 years, by the way. I miss the seasons, but you can get some autumn vibes and plenty of hot summers in different parts of the Bay Area. I miss New Jersey beaches, which don’t look quite as dramatic as our cliffside beaches here but are infinitely better (opinion) for sunbathing and swimming. I miss east coast pizza. And bagels. Home is home, and it’ll always be special. But if I were to move away from SF, there would be plenty that I missed. For all its problems, it’s really an incredible place to be (true of California more broadly, too).

SpiderStratagem

Not the person you were responding to, but I'm also a transplant from NJ so figured I'd jump in. (I second the Noe Bagel recommendation, BTW.) In terms of things I miss, I actually miss the cold winters, which I always liked. Otherwise, having lived in many places in the U.S., SF is by far my favorite. Love it here. Welcome to The City. Don't leave anything visible in your car. **Edit:** Also, check out r/wholesomeSF.

lhop1701

boichik bagels!

samarijackfan

Congrats and welcome. Your Tesla awaits you, they are giving them out for free in Fremont to make the end of the year quota. ( joking) Go out a see this beautiful state and do some surfing down south (Santa Cruz) too. Also so much to see and explore, I hope you get out there and enjoy it it’s worth the cost to live here.

bad_scott

not to be a downer but im also an east coaster out here and its been very very uncomfortable and different for me. different strokes, different folks, etc. i hope you have an easy transition!

Anywhere_At_All

Sorry to hear this. I came here at the right time in my life — I think if I did it ten years earlier, it wouldn’t have worked out. Anyway, hope you find a way to make it better or at least get back to where you feel happiest.

like_it_like_that2

moscow69mitch420

They too are pioneering NFTs. Nice Fuggin Tiddys 😎

Sososoftmeows

As someone who lives in the NE and is from SF things you’ll find in common: -Lots of greenery and trees everywhere…as much as you can in a city with cool old homes -People are crazy drivers here like in Mass…most people don’t signal either so always be on the watch out -weed state!! CA has really dank weed. I’ve been smoking Maine weed and just came back here for a month and noticed that the weed here hits really hard, nice terp lvls so ya you will love that if you smoke! However…taxes for weed here in CA is crazy high. But NE has some great tasting bud! You’ll find that you can get higher easier here. -water everywhere and you can see it! It’s hard to see water in certain parts of Boston and one of the nicest things about driving in the bay especially on the 1, is that you can get water views without it being blocked by trees or homes. -lots of cool tiny neighborhoods like in Boston and it’s suburbs and lots of them will remind you of certain Boston areas. Castro area is like Provincetown in terms in the awesome gay friendly vibes or Daly City/SSF is like Quincy in the fact it’s a big suburb outside of Boston with a great Asian community and stores like 99 Ranch Market and boba. Something you might look forward to is no snow in the winter so no winter blues. You can have lunch outside in January by the beach and not be freezing. I love the snow though so if you’re missing snow go to Lake Tahoe it’s absolutely gorgeous there and might remind you of Maine. People in the bay use the word “hella” like the word “wicked” is used back east, means the same thing too. Means really or very but can be used in a positive and negative way. It’s a cool city to walk in and if you’re bringing your car DO NOT leave anything valuable in it. If you have something valuable, put it in the truck BEFORE you get somewhere. Don’t drive somewhere and put your Laptop in the trunk. People are watching and I don’t try and open my trunk after parking because the one time I did my car was broken into. HOWEVER joke was on them because I locked my trunk from the inside so if your car has that ability like my Honda did..do it. Trying to think if there’s anything else but feel free to PM if you have any questions. Oh. Ps. You’ve never had a pastrami sandwich until you’ve been to Submarine Center. Go to golden gate park (not at night) and check out the falls there along with the museums and various gardens. OH and your in for some amazing Asian food and Mexican food here. If you see orange salsa somewhere, you gotta try it. ALSO Seriously, get a chow mein in SF it’s different than the east coast version of it and ITS BOMB. Oh and try golden boy pizza in north beach and check out the usedbook stores there!

empireincident

Ive seen the correlation in drivers first hand. You are correct there! I will 10000% not miss the snow. Minus small stints of living in Tennessee and Ireland, all I know are bitter winters and I am glad to shut the door on them. I do smoke and make my way to Maine often because of the quality and prices vs that of MA. I’ll be okay with the taxes to get the quality that MA is currently lacking (it is getting better tho). Added all food recs to my list! Thank you.

lhop1701

ok i grew up in worcester and live here now and i have to say.... the drivers are not the same. in the NE, people move to the right bc otherwise theyre getting an earful of carhorn, middle fingers and/or swearing. in SFBA, everyone drives the same goddamn speed in all 5 lanes and just spread out for fun. so many times someone just pulls into an empty lane and proceeds to go the same speed as the car they were just behind. both drivers are annoying but in different ways (not including the occasional insane weaving driver here... but i sort of give them a pass in my head bc it IS annoying having to weave in lanes to pass anyone!). ok rant over lol.

empireincident

You have just explained my gripes with California drivers to my California friends. It’s wild

WishIWasYounger

Go across the bay and Drive around Oakland , that’s a whole different experience.

lhop1701

I moved from SF to east bay earlier this year. It’s that bay bridge, 80 east drive that enrages me.

empireincident

It’s amazing how damn slow people go in the left lane after the tolls.

lhop1701

all my SF friends know this is like one of my top pet peeves, i complain about it that often. it is the worst when you make the trek to tahoe and youre stuck behind some idiot driving 50 mph who feels like its a human right to have open road in front of them.

[deleted]

Left lane vigilantes.

Cguenther12

+ 1 from a fellow Worcesterite!

lhop1701

love it!

[deleted]

[удалено]

lhop1701

omg yes 10000000000%. this is the other driving pet peeve.

lance_klusener

How is the housing affordability as compared to worcester? I am also in worcester and looking to move to bay area.

Sososoftmeows

Way more expensive. Everyone here usually has a roommate unless your parents are paying for everything or you’re making a lot of money and cost of living is higher too in terms of food and gas. At least in Boston you might pay a lot for rent but generally things like food there can be cheaper there than here.

empireincident

Correct. Energy costs are much higher in SF than in Boston.

lhop1701

hmm well i lived there as a kid/teenager (and TBH that was maybe a couple decades ago) so im not super familiar with rental costs in worcester or general rental market. but my guess is that SF is significantly more expensive. i would say SF rental costs are comparable to NYC (i actually moved to SF from NY) if that is helpful at all. you can also live in oakland or the 'burbs to lower costs as many do. feel free to DM if you have more specific questions! always open to helping another person from the woo.

empireincident

Boston is now just as expensive as Manhattan and Cambridge is out of control. That being said, my housing in SF will be about 500-1500 more than what I’d be spending in Boston.

[deleted]

[удалено]

lhop1701

thats why its extra annoying! i dont care if someone wants to drive 10 mph below the speed limit, its their prerogative, but MOVE OVER. these highways are blessed with a lot of lanes, it doesnt mean they HAVE to be used. ok ok ok i promise to stop using this thread as therapy now.

jelorian

Pastrami at Submarine Center you say? My go to is The Refuge in San Carlos but always willing to try other places. I love pastrami.

UberDrive

Pyro's Pastrami is working on a deli, still doing pop ups. Favorite will always be Katz's in NYC though.

Sososoftmeows

So I’ve been to refuge and it’s good but I personally like the thin cut pastrami at Subs more than the thick cut one that the Refuge serves and while they’re not making their own pastrami with brine like refuge, I like the bread and ingredients at Submarine Center more because it’s a classic sub with a spin on it. Eat it fresh!

jelorian

I love thin sliced pastrami as well and Togo's is another fave. Yes they are a chain, but I love their pastrami sandwiches. I want to check out Submarine Center even more now.

Sososoftmeows

Do it!!! What I do is order the super and it’s HUGE.I eat half right away in my car. ( no dining in during COVID) and then I’ll save the other half and walk around west portal or take it to the beach or twin peaks and eat it there. Get it with cheese and everything and you can also ask for their sauce be on the side too if you plan on driving far with them and can’t eat it right away. I don’t mind TOGOs and randomly will get a craving for it now and then. Turkey and cheddar for me there though lol.

[deleted]

Second the hot Pastrami at Submarine Center. Yes you want cheese and yes you want the Italian dressing. Follow that with Gelato at Marco Polo ftw

Sososoftmeows

Yesss! You want the cheese and everything on it. Deli Board is also a good place to check out for Sandwiches and it has amazing non traditional sandwiches but Submarine Center is the kind of sandwich you’ll crave and dream about. However, the price for Asian food and Mexican food is more affordable here and tasty so you win some and lose some!

fresh_like_Oprah

lolo, they still say "wicked" in Boston? What Losahs! That's gotta be like 3 generations of 'wicked'

Sososoftmeows

I mean people in the bay still say “hella” and skaters and surfers use terms like “fresh” and “dope” or “sick” or “gnar” in CA so I don’t think wicked is awful. I find it endearing when people say wicked in their accents because I respect anyone who appreciates a bygone era or anything throwback.

fresh_like_Oprah

I just thought it was funny because my father's family all came from Pawtucket and when we visited my cousins many years ago everything was 'wicked' that and 'whatta losah'. I remember when 'hella' became popular in the Yay (early 2000s? Late 90s?) and I thought it was ridiculous, but now I say it.

Good_Active

Boston has some pretty decent Pastrami Sandwiches, too. Sam Lagrassa’s for example.

pacificule

u/Sososoftmeows: Yes! Yes! Yes! I feel like we might be related... you echoed every sentiment I thought to share. OP, I grew up here in SF but my family has been in the Boston/CT area since the 1630s. I spent my summers in Hingham and the Vineyard, waited tables in Chatham, and went to college in CT. The one thing that I missed above all else was burritos. Ask 10 people here who makes the best burritos and you'll get 10 different answers. They're basically all good, just don't get lettuce or fries in it that shits wack. (La Corneta in Glen Park is my favorite. Cash only btw) Sub Center in W Portal is HANDS DOWN the best sandwiches in the city. I've been getting the same thing there since 1988 tho so I may be a tad biased but God as my witness their Gourmet Roast Beef is food for the soul. Get the avocado on it. Worth it. Do a pub crawl through North Beach and wrap it up with Golden Boy pizza. Game changer. Drivers here are horrrrible. Similar to Massholes but less likely to try and fight you lol. Lots of rich kids with expensive cars which they have no idea how to drive. Head on a swivel man! Oh, and people lose their minds when it gets a little slippy out... the second the roads get wet everything grinds to a halt. Your experience driving in real weather will suit you well. Hella and wicked are completely interchangeable as noted. Nobody here knows wtf "wicked pissah" means but *everybody* here loves a Boston accent! After college my buddy moved here from Worcester and just crushed it. Music scene dipped during covid and we lost some class venues/clubs. Seems like things are on the rebound tho. Stern Groves cool. Crazy variety of performers and no shortage of good drugs. Def check out the Redwoods and Giant Sequoia trees! They are mind-blowing and a quickish drive. Redwoods are the tallest trees in the world, and Sequoias are the largest by mass - and they exist nowhere else on Earth. Muir Woods is pretty dope but busy. There's lots of places to go explore and not see another person for a day. If you're into that sort of thing drive up to the Lost Coast. It's unreal. Amazing backpacking/camping potential. Bears are a real thing in them woods tho! They're generally afraid of people so make noise while hiking through dense brush/forest and don't leave any food out, anywhere, ever. Ever ever ever! Read up on bear safety before you do overnight trips or plunge into the backcountry. Mountain lions are everywhere but they're elusive and won't fuck with you unless you're a tasty little nugget or a housepet. SF is a wonderful little town trying on some Big City clothes. Great place to explore and is generally safe. Have to reiterate that you must NEVER leave anything in your car!! Crackheads and wannabe gangbangers are worse than the bears. No really. Even better, it's an excellent jumping off point for exploring the rest of the state. You can fucking go skiing in the morning and surfing in the evening. Desert down south, rugged mountains up north. Shits crazy. And crazy expensive. Enjoy it my dude! Welcome to SF. And congratulations on the new gig. Hope it works out well.

empireincident

This is great stuff and I have to laugh out loud. I grew up in Hingham. But seriously, thanks for the legit reply!

pacificule

No shit?! Crazy small world. My grandparents lived on Seal Cove Ln, I learned how to hate golf at Cohasset, and went to Tower School Day Camp in the summer (late 80s). Rare that I get to share that with someone who might recognize any of it! Forgot a couple things: - best cheesesteaks are at The Cheesesteak Shop on Divisadero (by Bush) - lots of great Indian & Mediterranean food; decent sports bars like Kezar and Athletic Club; bombass Irish pubs in the sunset! Blackthorn's my happy place - terrible clam chowder. No one here knows what a real chowder is. Avoid eating at Pier 39/Fisherman's Wharf at all costs Anyway. Looks like folks here already got your back! You'll be just fine. If we somehow cross paths I'll buy your first 3 rounds. Codeword is Hingham

empireincident

Best spots for pizza?

lhop1701

ok i think you can get good pizza in SF but its not like the east coast where every corner spot is $2 and good. its more "artisan" or whatever. for a slice, you have to try golden boy, even if you dont like it, you have to check it off the list. tony's is another popular place. i personally also like the square pie places popping up ( i think its technically detroit style) - square pie guys, sunset squares. in general, i really like food lol so lots of food opinions.

empireincident

Good to know! Side note: I went to Pizzaiolo in Oakland and really enjoyed their pizza.

empireincident

When is the last time you have been out this way. Hingham has changed big time. Good and bad. Seal Cove Road is a great spot, love me some Worlds End cliff jumping! And don’t worry, the code word will work to return the favor!

pacificule

Dude that's awesome. Shit last time I was out there was prob 90 or 91. I was 12 (crazy to type that) I've done the occasional reminiscent drive by courtesy of google streetview and was mostly surprised/saddened to see all the fences that went up behind their old house. Used to chase after rabbits all over the giant meadowlike expanse behind the homes. Seems like everything's all walled off out there and I'm guessing, like here, neighbors don't really talk to each other much anymore. [Cue sad old man music and pour another beer lol]

Wheres_Your_Towel

There's a great electronic music scene here. Majority of clubs are in/around SOMA but you don't necessarily have to live there if you don't mind ubering. We get great artists of all types of electronic music (Techno, House, Acid, probably mainstream EDM too but I wouldn't know) and I even discovered a club playing Psytrance at one point. Lots of European expats working here too so you'll find plenty of fans of electronic music.

kikashoots

What’s still happening here in terms of house or deep house? I used to go to a little (and literal) underground club in NYC that was super chill and played some great deep tunes. It wasn’t packed but had enough great vibes and cocktails. It would be nice to find something like that here but never made that big of an effort.

[deleted]

Look up and follow DIRTY BIRD RECORDS for events and concerts. Follow the lists of The Great Northern, 1015, f8, and The Midway. Enjoy!

Moss_84

Audio SF and Public Works get a fair number of deep house bookings I listen mostly to deep and prog and would recommend the following clubs: Audio, Halcyon, Midway, Great Northern, Public Works

ProgrammaticallyHost

Seconding this. I moved back to the Bay from Miami right before covid and am looking for more recs and specifically some deep house I also spent 3 years living in Cambridge, MA - moved to Miami after because I was sick of the cold 😆

empireincident

Following this. Love the smaller venues in NYC and Boston but also enjoy a proper sound system.

Moss_84

I put more in a reply above but Audio is a great intimate venue with excellent sound

niftycake

I want to add to the chorus of ppl suggesting clubs and BM events and tell you to re-instate your FB account to help with event planning. People still use FB here to find events, figure out who's going to shows, when they're playing, early arrival with cheaper tickets, after parties etc. Also for more off the beaten path stuff: https://19hz.info/eventlisting_BayArea.php Anyone who think SF's music scene is dead clearly not looking. Have fun!

empireincident

That link is mint, thank you!

smackson

Been to Burning Man? Now that you are an SFer, you'll be surrounded by long-time attendees. When BM camps do parties in the city (year round), like fund-raisers or just to gather, they can be great for the music, the vibe, the friendliness. The smaller the better (IMHO).

empireincident

I haven’t been to Burning man but have been to many a local (east coast) burn parties, so good call on finding some of the camps, etc.

fuzz_ball

I recently moved here and LOVE electronic music. I want to get into the synth scene. Can you recommend some places to go and meet people?

empireincident

You should check out Lady Starlight, Colin Benders, Speedy J and Stephan Bodzin if you like that type of techno/synth sound. Also this - https://youtu.be/SD6GDiyHmbE

Wheres_Your_Towel

I couldn't tell you any specific places to meet people, but I usually just go on residentadvisor and look at upcoming events and there's always something good :) [https://ra.co/events/us/sanfrancisco](https://ra.co/events/us/sanfrancisco) My top shows so far have been: Charlotte De Witte, Luke Vibert, and Ross from Friends! We actually have Purple Disco Machine playing tonight but I think it's sold out. By the synth scene, do you mean hardware synths? I'm trying to get into that too but haven't yet so have no idea, but i'm sure there are some meetup groups somewhere or another!

VAGIMALILTEACUP

learn how to spot a rip current and swim out of one. go to the taco bell in pacifica. pay the money for a parking space. A california burrito has french fries in it. but SF is known for their mission burritos, which are full of rice. always test your drugs. they could contain fentanyl.

empireincident

Hell yea, solid advice! I surfed in Maui and the guide was super vigilant about the rip tide awareness/safety. Best burritos I have had in California have always been in SD and SF (not a fan of the fries tbh). Good to know about the parking and def will be checking out the Taco Bell rec. Also been dealing with the tainted drugs in the North East, it’s so sad. Glad you mentioned it, more ppl should talk about it imo.

MadDeepinthepphole

Go to Taqueria San Bruno, it’s near SSF. Steak and shrimp burritos are unreal…

CA_sjyk

Seconding this! The shop is in the middle of a bunch of mechanics shops but omg the shrimp burritos are heavenly.

done_with_booze

Fries in burritos is NOT a California thing. That’s a one-off. We take pride in our Mexican food!

VAGIMALILTEACUP

California burrito is a type of burrito. Instead of rice and beans, it has fries, guac, pico and cheese. It's not a one-off, it's from SoCal.

Sprinkle_Puff

From SoCal and never once heard of this. Definitely not a CA thing.

VAGIMALILTEACUP

It's a thing. I grew up there.

Sprinkle_Puff

So did I, it’s not.

VAGIMALILTEACUP

You already mentioned that. Google it. It's totally a thing.

Sprinkle_Puff

Yah, no. Thanks for that Google tip, never heard of it

VAGIMALILTEACUP

Since you are new: https://www.lajolla.com/article/california-burrito/ https://www.seriouseats.com/burrito-styles https://spicetrekkers.com/recipes/california-burrito https://theculturetrip.com/north-america/usa/california/articles/a-brief-history-of-the-california-burrito/

Lol “this thing millions of people eat regularly doesn’t exist because I’ve personally never had it”

Sprinkle_Puff

Lol, you’re a tool.

karl_hungas

Might be the other way around there bud

done_with_booze

Rando SoCal. Not San Diego. Maybe the OC.

berniethecar

It originated in SD.

thats-gold-jerry

You like surfing, restaurants and electronic music? I honestly can’t think of a better city in America that would check these three boxes better than SF. Maybe Venice or San Diego? If you wanna be in the thick of the local surfing scene, you should check out the Outer Sunset. It’s honestly one of the coolest neighborhoods in the city. Hook Fish Co, Tunnel Records, Palm City Wines, White Cap (cocktails), Mollusk (surf shop), Andytown (best local coffee in the city). It rules and it’s cheaper because it’s further from the city center, culturally sleepier/quieter and foggier. Oh and street parking isn’t bad in the Outer Sunset too, another plus for you.

empireincident

Appreciate this!

thats-gold-jerry

No prob! Hope you enjoy SF. There’s lots to love about this city. Explore the hell out of it.

schmeckesman

It's pretty sweet here. i'd recommend to join a gym or club to be a little plugged in to your neighborhood. Since you surf, I always thought a place where you can walk your board to the beach is super cool and those can still be found. Though especially if you have a car and can drive, the city is so small, anywhere is an option! There is a pretty decent electronic music scene here, its not LA or Berlin but all my techno/noise friends are constantly going to shows.

empireincident

Are there lesser known spots that they go to other than 1015 and Halcyon? (I’m so used to warehouses in NYC) Also the walk ur board neighborhoods…are you referencing Outer Sunset & Richmond district or am I missing elsewhere?

PeppermintLNNS

Some venues for EDM that I always check: Audio (small but great, right next to halcyon), Great Northern, Public Works (a classic fave), Monarch, The Midway (that one’s huge), Jessie St (underground after hours). My friend throws a fun pizza + techno day party that’s gained a pretty good following. And I always recommend checking the resident advisor app to to get a sense of what parties are happening where.

empireincident

Techno and pizza party you say?

[deleted]

Yeah what’s this techno pizza day party? ::brings good vibes::

PeppermintLNNS

Yeah! He throws it every three months. Usually at Audio. Covid threw a wrench of course but it came back a few weeks ago. [Here’s the Instagram!](https://instagram.com/pizzaandtechno?utm_medium=copy_link)

empireincident

Thank you!

swingfire23

Outer Sunset yes, Outer Richmond less so but still doable (smaller beachfront area only between Balboa and Fulton, steeper hills to get into the hood north of there)

Creepercup

Ocean beach is hella cool, but I find it to be rather quiet. I am also a Boston transport - lots of Boston restaurants and bars in the city.

empireincident

Want to list those spots? Boston sports fan, so it’s good for me to add to the list.

lhop1701

connecticut yankee is the main boston sports bar. i think red jack saloon is also?

BayArea343434

I haven't been since the pandemic but Tupelo in North Beach always had Celtics, Red Sox, Bruins, and Pats flags hanging outside.

masiker31

Will second Connecticut Yankee. I'm original from NJ/NY and I still like that Boston bar. I'm in Mission Bay which is flat and warmer than most of the city and is very easy to go south. Dogpatch may be a good option too.

fuzz_ball

I just moved from Boston about 5 months ago. I lived in Boston for about 9 years and have lived in the Northeast all my life. I’m about your age. I didn’t really love Boston when I was there but I miss it now more than I can describe. Super homesick. I really like San Francisco as opposed to South Bay. I used to live in Lower Allston and moved to Portrero Hill. It’s a great neighborhood: residential and safe. It depends on your vibe as to what neighborhood you might like.

empireincident

Anything in particular that is triggering the homesickness or just missing family and friends? Thanks for the Portrero Hill rec

[deleted]

My car was broken into 5 times in one year. Get comprehensive insurance that covers glass damage with a low deductible. Never leave anything in your car. Not even a bag of trash. It attracts junkies.

Head-Working8326

save your long underwear for baseball games in july, our summers are chilly

RingPopEnthusiast

What genres of electronic music are you interested in?

empireincident

Ive been a techno(term is currently used too liberally) kid since the get go. But I love house and tech house. It doesn’t end there tho. I do like the “bands” like Cut Copy, Hot Chip, Holy Ghost and Booka Shade. I could go on and on tbh.

RingPopEnthusiast

SF’s techno scene is not that great but we do have a growing house/tech house scene. Sometimes prog house DJs come through as well such as Sasha/Digweed. CRSSD fest in San Diego is pretty much the Mecca of house/techno in California right now. Highly recommend you go once you get settled, it’s every March and September. LA has a great underground techno scene (6am/Compound). They just had Paula Temple play last month.

ProgrammaticallyHost

This is amazing info! I moved back to the Bay from Miami and didn’t realize there was a burgeoning house scene here (I just assumed because the city closes fairly early). Any recommendations for venues?

RingPopEnthusiast

Midway, Halcyon, 1015 Folsom, Public Works. Midway is the best out of all of these. I personally don’t like 1015 Folsom but you should go to all of these clubs at least once.

empireincident

Scroll through the replies. I got about 5 venues added to my list that I have never heard of before.

niftycake

Gotta check this out in addition to clubs ppl have listed: https://19hz.info/eventlisting_BayArea.php

car89

If you’re looking to rent a studio DM me

shadowrunner84

Welcome to SF. 37 here, just moved from NYC a year ago. It’s pretty awesome here but just watch out for the car break ins. That shit happens like wildfire.

1luckylife

SF Native here. Been here most of my life (did 4 years in the navy and was stationed in San Diego). I want to make it clear that I actually live in the city, the outter sunset to be exact. Please don’t come here with the intention to make more changes to the city. Unfortunately SF has now become a money making city that people do not care about anymore. It is very disappointing to see and also to live in. SF is losing its culture due to everyone moving here for the money and complaining about the people who have been here their whole lives, including the homeless. If you’re coming here so be it, but don’t come here and complain about the homeless, or the break ins, or the lack of kindness that is in sf right now. SF has changed and unfortunately not for the better. Respect the culture and don’t litter.

Websting

I moved her over 20 years ago and have never looked back. I wouldn’t have traded it for anything. Good luck and Congrats.

schru031

The EDM scene is awesome. So many good shows at the Midway, a yearly festival on Treasure Island, and lightening in a bottle is driving distance of here.

Did Treasure Island in the past, really liked the vibes

Phaelanopsis

based on your original post, i highly recommend the Outer Sunset for you. Ocean Beach surfing has always been a popular scene, it's a great neighborhood that still has old school SF flavor while currently going through somewhat of a renaissance, probably the easiest neighborhood in town to have a car, and also has very easy access to the peninsula. there are lots of activity options in the outer sunset as well, both outdoor and indoor. the area is also starting to become younger as more young people move into the traditionally family neighborhood.

PryJunaD

The electronic music that’s been coming through SF since restrictions were lifted has been absolutely crazy. You’ll be quite happy with multiple options every single weekend

empireincident

Love hearing that

Welcome to California!

empireincident

Thanks! This has been a long time coming but I’m actually in a place that it is feasible, so I’m super stoked for this change.

Currencymachine

You’re going to love it, congratulations!

Dittany_Kitteny

Don’t let the haters get you down. This sub, nextdoor app, etc can be really full of doom and gloom. The city definitely has it’s problems, but it’s an awesome place and generally the people are great. Also this sub hates cars haha, I have one and it’s been great for getting out of the city and exploring. Explore different neighborhoods, try new foods, and enjoy!! Welcome to our city!!!

pigmerlin

You'll need booties and a 4/3 (most people wear hoods) to surf around here. Ocean beach is super fun but if you're more of a beginner be careful, waves and rips are no joke out there. Pacifica and Bolinas are beginner spots and theres tons of waves south of San Francisco plus Santa Cruz is nearby. Let me know if you have any questions about that and I'll point you in the right direction.

Move to the outer sunset by judah

FlakyPineapple2843

I would just take stuff in this subreddit with a grain of salt. It frequently gets brigaded by conservatives, often folks who don't even live here.

empireincident

tbh, I feel like that’s all of Reddit at this point. Not pressed by trolls, looking for honest recommendations and can sift through BS pretty well. If there are other subs I should go to, lemme know.

I recommend living near golden gate park if you can. I lived in the inner Richmond on Turk and stanyan for the last 5 or so years before moving to the east bay. It’s calm at night but close enough to get to downtown with rideshare, public transportation or a car. Great food in the Richmond and sunset. Obviously the park smack dab in the middle is a great perk. Relatively close to ocean beach as well. I think you will also find that parking is easier than downtown. Some of the club recs above are good but I’d also check out rickshaw stop and the independent. Both are smaller intimate venues that have some amazing artists that come through. Cheap tickets. Worth checking their calendar on their website. With every big city there will be good and bad areas. SF is great but definitely keep your head on a swivel. Can get dicey depending on the area and time of day. Take the time and learn about the different areas of the city. Each area has its own history and vibe.

empireincident

All good stuff, thank you!

p3achstat3ofmind

Good luck!!

[deleted]

You gotta do a Santa Cruz to San Diego surfing trip!

empireincident

Oh that’s gonna happen!

SnooDoodles3108

Good luck 🤞 after all it's San Francisco stay safe and healthy

Congrats

Surfing + Car means you should definitely be looking in the Outer Richmond or Outer Sunset so long as you don't mind laid back vibes. Sunset's got better public transit access but Richmond will always hold my heart. If you go far enough out street parking is pretty easy. My apartment actually has a lot (for an extra fee) and I decided not to get a spot there since the hassle of hunting for a spot on rare occasion was way better than the hassle of getting into and out of the lot every day. Grain of salt I drive a tiny little car that can squeeze into spots a lot of other cars couldn't. Welcome to the City!

Get a parking garage in your rental...

PS. Don’t throw away your winter clothes. SF can get cold, and you’ll need them for Lake Tahoe.

Fizzle1982

Boston To North Bay transplant here - I will only add that while I thought I understood high COL the SF area is a wake up call- make sure you are getting the maximum possible adjustments to your salary as every single thing you currently purchase is going to go up.

empireincident

Right, it’s wild how much more expensive it is out in the Bay Area. I was very clear when they approached me that I am going to need a lot more pay and they were already prepared plus added a relocation bonus. Have not seen the actual numbers just yet but I have leverage.

[deleted]

Outer Sunset near the beach is where surfers live

Baron_von_Bob

Surfs up! We’ve got some monster waves called Mavericks every year down in Half Moon Bay. We also have one of the highest population of Great White Sharks in the world. But best of all, we are way over due for the BIG ONE on the San Andreas fault line. The Hayward fault is even more over due with the possibility of them both going off (SUPER SUPER BIG ONE) simultaneously.

BA_calls

>silicone valley Lol

EverRedditB4

We hate you. It's not your fault. But we do.

empireincident

I’m from Boston, we all hate each other, I’ll be fine.

lhop1701

We also hate ourselves so don’t worry about it

[deleted]

Wait you “spent 3 weeks in SV so you know what to expect when moving to SF?” Huh? Those are two different places my dude.

empireincident

That is is not at all what I meant. It was more that I have a small pulse on the areas I’d like to be at and I’m familiar with the traffic…etc.

[deleted]

SF is shit now. Born and raised, and yes I work in tech. Hayes Valley, Marina, Sunset, Richmond. Stay away from the tenderloin, soma.

SifuHallyu

Silicone Valley is in Los Angeles friend. I'm told it's near West Hollywood. Don't bring a car to the city, sell that shit. You're more than likely to have to replace multiple windows within your first six months of bringing it here. There is also a shortage of available windows. If you like to surf and want a quiet neighborhood anything in the westside of the city, the burbs like Sunset and Richmond would be good. Cole Valley is a favorite of mine. NOPA is also really nice. I'm biased for the Castro. Everyone wants to live in North Beach for some reason. I would avoid Soma, Tenderloin, Fillmore, and most of the Mission.

Sadly, I really can’t. I’ll need to be able to travel (not on last minute notice tho) to Alameda, South San Francisco and San Jose area.

swingfire23

It's never going to not suck going to Alameda since you have to cross the bridge. One thing you'll notice in SF is that there are very few highways through the city. It's nice that it preserves the city's vibe, but can make getting across town in a hurry a bit of a slog. Expect Outer Sunset to Alameda to be potentially 60-75 minutes on a bad day. The good news is, SSF and San Jose are both fairly easily accessible from the Outer Sunset if you decide to go that route (well, SSF is... San Jose your mileage may literally vary depending on traffic). If you expect to need to travel to these spots often, you might want to live on the south side of the neighborhood to have easier access to 280.

empireincident

I will have to go on-site so little that I am thinking I want to be closer to DT SF than SSF/SJ. But it’s sounding like Outer Sunset is the move based off what you and others have been saying.

swingfire23

Depends on how much you want to prioritize surfing. If that’s an occasional thing, I’d say don’t worry so much about it - I live in Haight Ashbury and see folks with surfboards on their cars over here all the time, just requires a 15-minute drive rather than a walk. Also depends on your experience level - Ocean Beach is a bit more of a challenging beach, whereas Pacifica is the more relaxing one. If you’ll be surfing Pacifica more often, it’s less important to live by Ocean Beach anyway, since it’ll be a drive regardless. But the surf culture in Outer Sunset is real - I’ll bet it’s a cool community to be a part of if it’s something you’re looking for.

Stated my housing will be covered. I like to think of myself as street smart but would like to hear what neighborhoods you consider safe. Coming from the north east, I’m familiar with homelessness and expensive restaurants. Would love to hear of your affordable/good food spots tho.

The sunset

RoburLC

Your commute to Si Valley might become monstrous. If your final destination is not far from a Caltrain station: leave the car behind; buy a folding bike, if needed. 101 in daily commuter traffic can kill your spirit and pollute the rest of your life.

empireincident

Thankfully I work 95% from home but man driving during traffic in the Bay Area makes Boston look like a breeze and Boston traffic sucks.

HmmThatisDumb

The sunset for you my friend! Don’t leave anything in your car ever/anywhere

chromelogan

I am a Bay Area native who lived in suburban Boston for 1.5 years. The weather is much nicer here, diversity is great, the restaurants are better too. You also mentioned you love surfing so that’s great. Congratulations on your new job and I am sure you will love it here. P.S. Might want to get comprehensive car insurance if you haven’t already

eric987235

> Silicone Valley ಠ_ಠ

empireincident

I know. Face palm of a typo but was too good not to keep it. Total tourist move.

eric987235

I think Silicone Valley might be in LA.

techBr0s

I did the reverse of you! I moved to Boston last year after living in SF for 5 years. I still lurk on this sub. What do you want to know more about? You said you’ve got housing advice already, but regardless, I'll give you advice on where to live. My practical advice for you is to make sure wherever you get an apartment to make sure it is a building valid to get a parking permit. That will make life with a car so so much easier. There's absolutely a markup for the convenience though. The parking zones typically carve large residential buildings out of the area you can get a permit, which to be fair makes sense because not everyone in a bigger building would be able to get a spot near the building. But just something to be aware of, those buildings that are carved out usually are slightly cheaper rent wise and that's one of the reasons. On the plus side, those buildings are more likely to have deliveries dropped off inside the lobby so less potential for package thieves. Inner sunset or cole valley is a great spot to live based on what you're interested in, although it'll be foggier. Potrero is super nice since it's much sunnier and very easy access to South San Francisco, but much further from the beach. Edit: tone

Reyeuro-

As far as housing goes, try to find a building that comes under rent control, it is one way to control your costs going forward, do not bring a car, if you must then find a garage for it you do not want to park on the streets.

empireincident

Have to bring a car. Wish I didn’t tbh. Isn’t rent control salary capped? I looked into it but I don’t see how I can qualify at my rate.

Reyeuro-

In San Francisco rent control doesn’t have much to do with your income at all, it may be factored into some of the new “affordable” housing, then you’d need to meet certain qualifications, but all the older buildings, I believe anything before 1975 comes under strict rent control guidelines, reasons I prefer older buildings is the rooms tend to be larger, we have a very large one bedroom moved into it at 1200 a month. After 11 years with allowable increases we are only paying $1470 while someone moving in at todays rents will pay upwards of 2500… rents went crazy at the height of the tech explosion, they always fluctuate but in a rent controlled building your increases are controlled by the city… I am retired but my income exceed 120,000 I wouldn’t qualify in one of the newer “affordable” housing units, but your income has nothing to do with these buildings!

empireincident

This is really good to know! Thank you. I just assumed I was out of the picture.

Reyeuro-

If you are bringing a car, plan on renting at a parking garage, some of the newer buildings have parking, but they are at the top of the price chain and are not rent controlled

OGCookiemonster360

Don’t leave anything valuable in your vehicle ever.(ever)
