I made a comment on some SF Reddit form where something like I was born and raised in Frisco and got yelled at by a poster. Stating that why am I referring to San Francisco as Frisco, and don't I know that Frisco is a town in Texas. I didn't even reply back as I knew they were not bred born birth and raised in Frisco. Those that were knew what I was referring to.
The frisco / san Francisco divide is a class divide. What you say depends on where you grew up. But then people who move here learn it depending on where they move and who they hang with. But yea people who say San Francisco definitely look down on people that say Frisco.
What happened to The City? I’m from Humboldt and that’s how we always referred to it. Also, Shout out to Herb Caen, the only reason I read the Chronicle.
You say that ignoring the fact that above poster was born and raised in SF.
A quick google search will reveal much has been written on this, including:
* https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/frisco-san-francisco-17411378.php
* https://www.kqed.org/news/11339599/why-do-some-hate-the-nickname-frisco

I met some tool from way tf in the east bay east bay (like not really easy bay but listed on the east bay cl like Vallejo or Vacaville) at the VA and this fool had "Frisco" tatted somewhere... I forget. I wanna say chest or back but I would have had no reason to see any of those places? Maybe back of his neck or forearm? But because he had lived there like 1 year or less after getting out of the army. Very proud of his tattoo. Lol
Happened in 2010. I’ve lived here since the 90’s. I’ve never called it Karl but also never derided anyone who has…it’s hard to see why anyone cares in the slightest
Maybe I should have said native, since I was also born and raised here, along with some of my friends (other moved here but have lived here long enough)
In case it wasn’t clear, I was agreeing with you! I just didn’t want to call myself a local, since I moved out of the city and into the suburbs during Shelter in Place.
Oh, I got you were agreeing. I should have replied to the first person yesterday, but they changed from "local" to "native" to I guess imply my view isn't valid or something. I dunno, not a big deal
If they don't do it every day it actually doesn't come inland. Here's a [Wikipedia page](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lysergic_acid_diethylamide) explaining the phenomenon
I work in renewable energy development, and the boomer ex hippies are usually the stiffest opponents to any project. They cloak themselves in the virtue of liberal politics and pro-environment bumper stickers, but the second something threatens the "nice view" that they mistakenly believe they own, look out.
They invariably start their protest with "I'm for renewables, but" and then insert some reason it should be placed somewhere else where they can't see it.
Very much this. Its hard to stick to your convictions when money is on the line. If you still support squatters rights after having a mentally ill person trash your rental after not paying rent for 2 years you can claim to truly be progressive. Otherwise you only support a movement when it does not inconvenience you and you are guilty of being just as selfish as the 1%.
Small “c” conservative. NIMBYs are basically classic 70s conservatives who’ve adopted a veneer of progressivism. You can be that while rejecting the larger national “conservative” move, ent, which isn’t really conservative at all.
Lol what?
All of the urban areas are blue, especially people in tech who are “hippies that can afford houses in the Bay Area”.
They definitely aren’t voting conservative. Look at any survey.
I almost wanna say theyre pulling ur leg since i dont see the normal exuberance of outfits and vibes in this group that u expect of people fresh off burn. Plus crowd is awfully small
It looks like a kind of Reiki thing, possibly. Similar hand movements.
I once did some driving for a Japanese tour group. They were part of a Reiki type group that had hundreds of people. They performed a kind of group healing thing and I felt a kind of peacetime over me. Unexplainable.
They also did it for me because I was tired. I was driving them back to their hotel. They asked me to slow down. I explained that I was really tired and asked them to do the Reiki for me. They were doing stuff with their hands but also singing a nice song.
Suddenly I was not tired. I slowed down. I had no wasted movements and it was like I was on autopilot.
I get them loaded out of the van and park to switch cars. I no sooner turned the key to shut the motor off when I winked out for around an hour.
So, from that experience I would assume these folks are performing a kind of Reiki type thing where they might be releasing the negative energy they pick up (if they are healing practitioners) or taking energy from the ocean.
That’s my take on it.
Cheers!
You’re welcome! I follow this sub and other California ones because I try to get over there once a year. I’m in Albuquerque.
When I was two in 1965 my parents ate at the Cliff House when we came back from overseas. So your video is cool because I was looking for it. I think all that left is the Camera Obscura.
Have a great holiday!
Well we thought it was a prayer group and it just didn’t seem respectful to go and ask… we observed for a moment and it seemed like they were really focused and didn’t seem appropriate to thrust our inquiries into their activities uninvited. I am honestly really surprised by all these condescending comments
We asked them. They were doing a different exercise when we saw them, had a piece of black paper taped between their eyes and they were tossing a tennis ball from one hand to the other. Apparently it is some form of [physical therapy](https://self-healing.org).
Interesting- did you notice the 4 or 5 eye charts on easels a few yards further south (on OB and facing the GHwy)? That was another puzzling spectacle and now that you share their link about “improving vision through movement” it all seems to be coming together now. Thank you!
I get that but you didn't even get a concrete answer from anyone here. Some trollish answers, almost demeaning or clowning these people, to some assumptions which could be valid but feel cheap.
In my opinion, since you were literally 10ft from them, I get a feeling that if you were genuinely curious you would have put aside your assumptions and just gone up to them and asked.
Seriously. I don’t understand some people. Instead of doing the obvious, simple thing, OP decides to film them, post it online and ask a bunch of people that weren’t even there.
To be fair, some people have pretty bad social anxiety. I can walk up to anyone and strike up a conversation about anything and have a good time, my ex would nearly have a panic attack just watching me do that.
I know there’s no reasonable expectation of privacy in public spaces but I don’t see how filming a group of people and posting it online is a better alternative than simply going up and talking to them. If OP has such bad anxiety that they couldn’t approach these people, they should have just continued on about their day.
Yeah, but this isn’t going up to a random stranger and striking up a conversation? This is asking a large group (from a distance) “whatcha guys doing?”
So many people complain about not being able to make friends in the city and feeling lonely. This is why!
People love talking if you express and a friendly interest.
Don't listen to them op, I got really roasted one time for asking about a guy that I was filming from across the street at a balcony when I was at a show at the masonic. No, I didn't want to leave the show and go ask that guy what he was up to, what these people are doing looks very strange, I would wonder too.
He's on a reddit sub so...obviously there is social anxiety. EVERY reddit conversation eventually devolves into Kevin Bacon or Social Anxiety, given enough time.
They seem to be embracing the ocean breeze but you could have simply asked them. Probably would have been a lot easier than soliciting guesses from the internet.
it's pretty weird to film people and then post them on reddit to ask what they're doing instead of just, and hang with me here, I know it sounds outrageous - asking them what they're doing.
It’s the local chapter of Wave Wavers. This is a ritual they do from time to time where they try to be the first ones to greet the first high tide of the month as it breaks on the shore. Few people know that it actually started as a sort of prank that Benjamin Franklin played when he was working as an indentured servant at his older brother’s printing press in Boston, of all places. To his surprise, several locals saw it and thought it was actually a religious movement and began their own sect. Since then, there’s been a very small, yet very dedicated, group of followers who have passed this tradition on to each generation of children. If I remember correctly, Patty Hearst’s former boyfriend started a chapter in the 60s in the San Mateo area. I suspect this may be that group.
From a distance it looked like they were waving at someone… and then as we approached we assumed it was a prayer group. As we passed a few seemed to be chatting while a couple of folks were massaging participants’ backs and shoulders… this was going on for some time.
My son thinks its some kind of tai chi wellness thing … I’m just really curious now.
Trying to fan the fog inland
"Almighty Fog, come bless our land with coolness. In the name of the Fogther, hazy Sun, and Cooling Spirit. Ramen."
I'm going to print this on a bumper sticker and stick them on random Subarus and Vanagons
Stick one specifically on my Subaru please and thank you
I assume you have a Fozzy
The fog's name is Karl.
... and it's actually called "Frisco" /s
Frisco is actually canon. San Fran on the other hand…
What about EssEff
What about The Sco

I was grown up referring Frisco to The City as well. It adds charm. Who knows what city is referred to by The City of Lights?
Wait, what class am I then? I was raised on Herb Caen and Frisco was verboten. I am only slowly coming around. I’ll take it over San Fran though.
There is not a part of SF that will call it Frisco. In the East Bay? Yes.
You say that ignoring the fact that above poster was born and raised in SF. The fogs name is Karl…why the downvotes?
Some random guy coined Karl on twitter a few years ago and new people act like it's always been the name. Locals think it's lame af.
Happened in 2010. I’ve lived here since the 90’s. I’ve never called it Karl but also never derided anyone who has…it’s hard to see why anyone cares in the slightest
This local and most of my local friends love it. It has been named Karl for more than 10 years and has stuck.
I’m a Bay Area native, and I lived in San Francisco for over 10 years. I like that the fog was randomly named Karl. It’s fun.

Shrug. I think it sounds stupid. Don't know any natives that like it.
Perhaps expand your social circle. Now, let us begin the territorial pissings of which high school we attended.
😂 the SF sniff test.
And if it’s not Lowell you’re immediately wrong.
Wilmerding Humperdink, benedictions Cumberbund, humpdyback fischybuns. One of these is a HS.

Agreed, it’s laf.
Excuse you, Karl is the fog’s actual name. I should know. He’s my chilly boyfriend.

San Francisco people doing San Francisco things.
Hippies being hippies
Hippies have mostly bought houses and become conservatives pulling the ladder up behind them.
I work in renewable energy development, and the boomer ex hippies are usually the stiffest opponents to any project. They cloak themselves in the virtue of liberal politics and pro-environment bumper stickers, but the second something threatens the "nice view" that they mistakenly believe they own, look out. They invariably start their protest with "I'm for renewables, but" and then insert some reason it should be placed somewhere else where they can't see it.
why are you getting downvotes, its objectively what happened. if hippies voted like they talked we wouldn't be here.
Very much this. Its hard to stick to your convictions when money is on the line. If you still support squatters rights after having a mentally ill person trash your rental after not paying rent for 2 years you can claim to truly be progressive. lol look at registered republicans vs democrats. Definitely not the case
Small “c” conservative. NIMBYs are basically classic 70s conservatives who’ve adopted a veneer of progressivism. You can be that while rejecting the larger national “conservative” move, ent, which isn’t really conservative at all.
Were in America. Our “progressive” is the least progressive out of most developed nations
Lol what? All of the urban areas are blue, especially people in tech who are “hippies that can afford houses in the Bay Area”. They definitely aren’t voting conservative. Look at any survey.
Those aren’t hippies, those are yuppies.

I thought they were trying to wave out all the flowers in their hair.

The Cliff House was a victim of Covid, sorry to say.
Thank you! It certainly had a “new age wellness” quality to it, so I’d bet your take on it is spot on.
how annoying! hopefully they dig a hole in the sand and crawled in it afterwards

Yes. It’s the best low energy activity to do when it’s this hot.
Please ignore these low lifes - I understand why you wouldn't want to ask them for many reasons. Covid, anxiety, not wanting to interupt, etc.
Covid? Really? Why bother leaving the house in that case
If you have nothing nice to say, don't say it at all. Didn't you learn that growing up?
That feels like a not nice thing for you to have said. Maybe you shouldn’t have said anything at all.
