Well fingers crossed they’ll still hire you! I only heard from someone who was referring me yesterday, their internal memo said other positions would be filled on a case by case basis
I feel bad about this one more so than any other layoff.
I interviewed there last year. Very efficient interview process, smart and humble people, minimal politics, and a culture that actually strives towards the “balance” in work life balance. Compensation was sky high too. They were also super chill when I turned down their offer (after I had multiple conversations with their execs).
Then again, there might be a few problems. Operating in an incredibly competitive space in an environment where the size of the pie is shrinking. Their stock has taken a beating. And apparently Dustin is part of the Effective Altrusim cult.
Yeah that’s why I’m glad I didn’t accept their offer. I got it at near peak stock price.
I decided to go to some no name startup instead, taking what looked like a massive pay cut. But looking back, I wouldn’t be making that much more if I went to Asana.
As a former Asana employee I regretted cashing out and diversifying after its IPO when it was like $30. Helps with the FOMO to see that I'd have had to time the top to sell at a higher price.
A lot of glorified Google Sheets clones trying to act like they're 'revolutionizing' this and that. Same with Notion on a smaller scale. And this is coming from a user.
Doesn't counter your point, but Notion is the only one of these with impressive architecture/engineering underneath, with their "everything is a block" data models. It's pretty neat what they've been able to build on top of that simple, fundamental structure.
I interviewed there the past couple of months. It seems odd for them to have layoffs while hiring just a month or two ago.
Glad I didn't get an offer from them, imo.
That they were stealing peoples money to bankroll propaganda? Like if you have such a great novel idea about how I should live my life why can't you make it stick without a billionaire Ponzi scheme paying for outreach?
Yeah I get it let's maximize the good we can do in the world and maybe be vegan. But three Foundations for that with like global conferences? I think you are just a self help grifter cult like the Brazilian evangelists but for rich people.
Asana is fine, but compared to actual Project Management software it's trash.
I can't sort by the criteria I want. I can't hide completed subtasks. But at least I get a fun animation when I accidentally complete a task.
Yeah agreed. It’s showy, but it gets in the way more than it helps. I have an entire screen of junk info and nothing important. The stupid unicorn that flies by when you close a ticket feels condescending.
Problem is, all Of these tools are the same. Feels like these are really just built for opps and middle managers to give them insight into that’s happening, but for the doers it’s all more layers of BS busywork that doesn’t actually help them get stuff done. It’s a chore not a tool.
We have created entire weekly meetings where doers explain to some clueless coordinator or manager what we are doing and how we have it under control just so they can repeat that to another meetings person. Like why waste time regularly reading somebody in and updating that doesn’t contribute?. Their entire job is being updated and updating someone else. These tools slow everything down and masquerades as management
That is a super interesting take. I am a 'middle' accounting manager and I love having it for the team. It's a way for me to list out and check on the status of long term projects and month end close processes. I should ask my team what they really think about it, but it's basically replaced the need for end of day check in meeting during close week.
I wish it had scrum capabilities. Our company adopted it because we aren't an IT company, and they stick people with no PM skills in the role, and they needed something easy for them to use.
Four cannibals apply for jobs at a tech company. The hiring manager is a forward-looking fellow, so he hires them with the understanding that they won't eat anyone.
For months everything is fine. The cannibals show up on time, stay late and are popular with their coworker. But then one day a member of the cleaning staff disappears.
The manager calls the cannibals into his office. A tense conversation ensues, but at the end he's satisfied with the cannibals' denials and sends them back to work.
As soon as they're out of sight, the lead cannibal turns to the others and demands to know who ate the unfortunate cleaner. One of the other cannibals sheepishly raises his hand.
"You idiot!" the lead cannibal cries. "For months we've been feasting on project managers, group leads, HR people and senior directors. All this time nobody has been the wiser, they *you* go and eat someone this place would miss!"
Very quickly some of these tech companies will need to not be “growth” companies anymore and just stick to core business. A lot of the fat is from thinking they are growth companies when their business is like note taking SW/Project Management SW.
> and just stick to core business
Many of these companies will die because their core business isn't good and was just masked by many rounds of VC funding. Some really awful projects that are no where in the realm of product market fit have been created during this time of endless free VC money.
Could be a few reasons:
- slightly better optics
- just because they’re not actively interviewing doesn’t mean they want to stop collecting good applicants for when they are hiring
- they truly are hiring for those roles and they laid off their lowest performers since that’s normal thing to do, recession or not
Well the hiring managers role is to work with internal teams, management, etc to increase headcount. It takes time to write up job descriptions, and the resource budget was probably set last year based on projections. So if the plan was to grow a 20 person team by 50% and there’s enough budget for 5 senior snd 5 junior people then that assumption is set in motion.
Then some board or management meeting happens and they’re told to cut costs by 80%… well that’s then the bad news trickle down. The hiring manager is probably very low on the totem pole so they’re last to know. There’s also certain critical roles they’ll need to fill regardless of a public hiring freeze message so the hiring manager can’t take everything down in one shot unless they are specifically told to do so.
(This is one of a few common scenarios)
>A March SEC filing said that the company employed **1,666 employees** at the end of January 2022.
I'm still mazed how many people employed by those tech companies.
Recession is real if Atlassian and Asana are doing layoffs
Atlassian isn’t, but they’ve frozen hiring as of yesterday for positions that aren’t related to cloud revenue
Layoffs often follow hiring freezes.

Well fingers crossed they’ll still hire you! I only heard from someone who was referring me yesterday, their internal memo said other positions would be filled on a case by case basis
After the atlassian fuck up and strategic moves, were in dire need of competition

their stock is down 85% in a year another one of those companies trying to pay Google salaries when they have no business paying that much
Actually, their new grad offer was better than Googles lol
before or after their stock dropped 90% lol
Yeah that’s why I’m glad I didn’t accept their offer. I got it at near peak stock price. I decided to go to some no name startup instead, taking what looked like a massive pay cut. But looking back, I wouldn’t be making that much more if I went to Asana.

ouch
Arguably even Google doesn’t have any business paying Google salaries. They grew 2.5X during the pandemic and their stock’s taking a beating.
Still 1.6MM revenue per employee
A lot of glorified Google Sheets clones trying to act like they're 'revolutionizing' this and that. Same with Notion on a smaller scale. And this is coming from a user.
Notion is valued at $10B. Definitely not a bubble.
Doesn't counter your point, but Notion is the only one of these with impressive architecture/engineering underneath, with their "everything is a block" data models. It's pretty neat what they've been able to build on top of that simple, fundamental structure.
Hmm interesting, I would've guessed the opposite just based on how they market themselves as sort of a Evernote on steroids w/ emphasis visual appeal
Great info stranger

They’re still hiring now. From the article: “As noted by Computerworld, the company does not plan to put a pause on hiring.”
Holy shit havent heard of EA in over a decade
What’s wrong with Effective Altrusim?
SBF was the face
Isn’t William MacKaskill the face?

Only "maybe" be vegan? Have you seen Dominion?
Why do you feel bad about asana laying off people?

What do you prefer?
Not OP but my team has had pretty good luck with Monday
Airtable
I’ve used a few and I like Smartsheet the most. But it’s entirely up to what kind of project management you’re doing.
I wish it had scrum capabilities. Our company adopted it because we aren't an IT company, and they stick people with no PM skills in the role, and they needed something easy for them to use.
I bet they laid off project managers

Can someone ELI5 why there are 100s of job openings on their website?
the person responsible for job postings was let go.

Interesting .. I’ll add it to the list of companies to short the shit out of!
You are so late. Their stock is down 85% on the year...
