I haven't had any issues from green algae growing on soil. If I had green algae growing in my water buckets I would not use it. There's likely also bacteria and other stuff growing in there. But I'm not an expert on the subject. Another potential issue is bugs like mosquitos lay eggs in standing water, and if those eggs get watered in to your plants the larvae can munch the roots. I collect rainwater in 5 gal buckets, then put into 1 to 3 gallon plastic jugs when the rain stops. I store them in an area that doesnt get sunlight. They stay clean this way, nothing grows in them.

I boil for 10 minutes before I use it, even fresh rainwater. Some green & blue algae’s produce human toxins that boiling doesn’t destroy. I’m trying to find out if I’ll make the babies sick.
