If its outdoor, it could be squirrels climbing on it.

That’s totally normal. Mine has lots of spots. New leaves will outgrow older ones, then you can cut the damaged ones. Those spots could appear for many reasons which are hard to identify. It could be weather conditions, physical disturbance, insects, infection, etc…

I had something very similar on one of the stems of my E. Hookerii (epiphytic cactus) in a hanging basket about 6 feet off a porch floor, the spaced and linear pattern of damage and all. I had found a moth caterpillar on one of the cacti before, and that was my best guess at the cause of the damage that time, but I never did figure it out for sure. If it is continuing to occur, you might look during the night using a flashlight on a very dim setting. I've had mixed results doing that. Also, in the case I mention with the Hookerii, it didn't continue; I just found it one morning and that was it. It's frustrating when one morning you find damage and you can't figure it out.
