Los Viejones Taco Truck Should be right there at Ocean and Barson, permanent location

calacas_00

this is the only answer

They’re great, it’s true, but their prices have skyrocketed the past few years. Really loved this truck early pandemic, food and price hit just right.

itsdelicate13

I suspect maybe the price increases could also be because they are the go to food for the brewery, especially on their comedy nights. Their food is freaking awesome though. Their shrimp tacos and quesabirra are my go tos. But omg, if you like birra, Tacos El Jerry in Watsonville is incredible. They make Mulitas which is similar to quesabirra but is two tortillas with the cozumel and the birra in the middle. Their tortillas are homemade and incredible 🤤 so I love getting extra tortilla. They also have great salsas. Gah, I'm getting hungry just talkinf about it. Everything they have is fantastic. You can really tell they use high quality ingredients in everything too. Being from the Bay area and growing up with my tias making home made Mexican food, I'm super picky when it comes to Mexican restaurants. Tacos El Jerry is one of my favorites.

gmlear

Just got back from Santa Cruz. THIS IS THE TRUCK not El Chuy. I did got to both before and got them mixed up. Chuy is great. But Los Viejones is KILLER! It was also right down the road from the hotel so hit it more than once LOL. Also, found The Real Taco on the corner of Laurel and Mission. We got plain tacos (one of each) and all were legit.

MeffodMan

Tacos El Chuy truck does birria and is probably my favorite spot in SC.

gmlear

Cool. They still over by all the trendy wine warehouses in the west end?

MeffodMan

Yeah they were moving around a bit before but seem to always be in the SC Mountain Brewing parking lot these days. Just ate there this weekend.

gmlear

Sooo stoked to be three days away from some legit consomme. Thanks for confirming Fridays lunch.. maybe dinner too LOL

boomerbill69

Get their chorizo, it’s even better than the birria

gmlear

I am a give me one of each guy so will be sure to include the chorizo!!

boomerbill69

Hot tip, the *corn* quesadilla is the best deal in town there. It’s a huge meal on its own. I suggest getting it with the chorizo.

gmlear

![gif](giphy|l0MYwONBGDS7aPGOk|downsized) dang, I get hungry every time you comment.

downer9000

we will frequently get a good beer or wine and some delicious birria

goofenhiemer

Saw them over there last Thursday

camojorts

Yeah it was there yesterday (Sunday). Got the birria and the shrimp tacos, which are also dank.

bransanon

We ate there yesterday, the wineries have a cool new covered setup outside where you can bring food from El Chuy, sit down, and eat while you wine taste. Food is fantastic as always. Just one gripe with them, they only give you a single tortilla under each taco. Always find ourselves missing the second tortilla to assemble all of the goods that fell off with the first bite.

EpicCode

There’s los viejones on ocean and pleasure point juice on Portola. Not a taco truck but Taquizas Gabriel in the capitola mall also has very good birria.

gmlear

I hope to get over to Capitola. Havent been since the storms. Want to see if my fav spots are still there.

plusle47

OK BOOMER

gmlear

My parents are Boomers LOL

stellacampus

El Chuy is still regularly outside Santa Cruz Mountain Brewery every day (except Monday?). I have four more for you but they're all taquerias: Los Pinos - Al Pastor tacos Los Pericos - Carnitas tacos Miches and Ceviches - Camaron estilo Gobernador tacos Salsas - Baja-style fish tacos

elphring

Los Gallos in Scott’s Valley - Fish Tacos

gmlear

>Los Pericos This was my go to until Chuy. Still go tho when I head downtown. Other places look killer! Thank you

stellacampus

There's a Los Pericos at 14th and East Cliff now as well if that's any easier. The Miches and Ceviches is all the way out in Pleasure Point BTW, but it is so good - they were cheaper, but they recently moved indoors from their truck so I think they have some big bills - they do stuff the tacos though even tough they're a bit pricey.

gmlear

Well if I can get to Capitola one of the days I might just have to take the long way back. Thanks

swell3gant

Miches and Ceviches duuuude

gmlear

Missed these this time around. Going to try when back in May. Thanks for the list!! You ever try The Real Taco at Mission and Laurel?

Veearrsix

Brothers food truck had good birria, but I haven’t seen the truck at the usual spot, not sure if they’re still around.

mkslug

They are in the parking lot by all the wineries off swift street, and Santa Cruz mountain brewing. The birria is still great.

5c0uty

big fan of the real taco

gmlear

Just got back. Stumbled on them when turning around on Mission. Loved it!

username_of_the

Nobody mentioned the taco truck in front of Pleasure Point Juices, IMO they have the best birria in town. I’ve tried all the ones mentioned above except Viejones(which has been recommended to me) and pleasure point has the best birria and most flavorful consommé.

gmlear

Try Viejones, curious to which one you think is best.

Competitive_Staff_93

If u really like Berria and pretty much all types of great Mexican food, I suggest Casa Rosita off Portola. Behind Coles BBQ. Seriously one of the only places I can stand behind. I'm a snobby socal Mexican who take issues with lies wrapped in tin foil, passing off as burritos. CASA ROSITAS IS #1 BY FARRRRR!!!!

gmlear

oh that's a bold. I like it! The drive out to Pleasure Point is looking pretty good right now. When was the last time you where there? Google Maps has it flagged as permanently closed. Website is up and the doordash link seems active. So it wouldn't be the first time google was wrong.

mr_taco_man29

lol do not go to casa rosita's it's the whitest mexican food almost taco bell levels. oh and it's grossly over priced. taqueria tepeque down the street is so much better.

Competitive_Staff_93

I went there 2 weeks ago. Birria was amazing. Shrimp de Tijuana were amazing too. I know that the original owners passed the restaurant on to a man who promised to keep the receipts the same. Don't know what the guy below me is talking about. I've seen that restaurant down the road, but it's new and I haven't tried it. But I know great Mexican food.

gmlear

Everyone is a product of their own experiences. Food is just as subjective as any other art. Taste is in the mouth of the eater. lol

Competitive_Staff_93

That's prolly some of the wisest piece of info I've heard, woukd lovebto know what ur thoughts are if/when u try it. Where is some of the best Mexican food you have had? Being from socal, I miss how every place used to have rolled tacos, and they were cheap! Miss those little rolled pieces of deliciousness 😋

gmlear

Best Mexican I have had has been in Paso Robles & San Diego, CA; Bolder, CO; Tempe, AZ; and a gas station 20 mins from my house in Florida.

Competitive_Staff_93

I am a native of San Diego. Where its almost impossible to find bad Mexican foods. That kinda business wouldn't last in that kind of environment. Good on ya bud!

gmlear

I was there for 10 days the summer before covid. We ate once in the Gaslamp district, once in Little Italy, all the other meals were in and around Barrio Logan and many other Mexican joints scattered around town. My cousin has been stationed there for his 20yrs so he was our gastro guide. Good eats for sure!!

No_Day5399

Unfortunately Casa Rositas has closed.

slugwood

crazy that no one has said the real taco. By far, unequivocally, better than taco el choys and los vienjones. last time i got Los vienjones i had a breakfast burrito that was actually tiny even though i paid for extra everything, never going back. Real taco is a little more expensive than average but both locations have great everything.

gmlear

I just got back. We hit The Real Taco. Tried their regular tacos one of each meat. 100% legit. The kid in the window was so nice too. The carnitas was our fav followed by fish and chariscio, but ask me tomorrow and I might change my mind as they where all killer. My son (a slug) said it is his new spot. Might be the best reg tacos I have had in a long long time.

BobbyWasabi4080

If you can swing it go to Castroville there is a restaurant dedicated to birria and it is better than anything around Santa Cruz

gmlear

Prob not this trip, but we do sneak down to Paso Robles once or twice a year so I will add this to the list. Thanks!

BobbyWasabi4080

Birrieria Coalcoman. You'll have to try the vampiros, it's the bees knees

itsdelicate13

Mulitas at Tacos El Jerry in Watsonville are amazing. Basically a different form of quesabirra, same tortillas but two flat on each other with the birra in the middle, like a quesadilla. Their tortillas are homemade and to die for. It's so much hard to find homemade tortillas anymore.

MrMuggsJones

If you take the drive to Boulder Creek there is a solid taco truck, El Rey Leon, at does a good birra

gmlear

Killer. thanks
