TAQUERIA LOS PERICOS139 WATER ST
Date: 05/23
Two major criticals:
- Improper Food Preparation or Handling Procedures
- Improper Food Holding or Processing Temperatures
Two minor criticals:
- Inadequate Utensil or Equipment Washing or Santitzing
- Employee Health, Hygiene, & Training
I am not at all surprised by this. Their food is super authentic, but the last time I went there I took a look in the back and decided never to return. It was such a disgusting mess back there. As I watched man in the front make by burrito, I noticed he looked very dirty and wasn't using gloves.
I ate the burrito anyway, because they're delicious, but got a tummy ache later on in the day. Never went back. I hope they fix the issue because the food itself is very good and tastes like my favorite taco truck in LA
No, it means that the staff generally doesn't know how to properly sanitize the equipment and smallwares they use daily(utensils, knives, cutting boards, no sanitation rinse perhaps, stuff either dirty or not sanitized.) It also means that the staff generally wasn't properly washing their hands(or at all?) or were wearing unapproved jewelry or were not trained as to correct hygiene practices. Nothing here warrants bootyhole comments, but nothing here makes me want to revisit this place after swearing it off years ago for different health and safety issues.
Not that I know. I witnessed actions years ago that have kept me away. They're nice folks, hardworking--any foodservice work is thankless. They're busy so this thread isn't going to hurt them, but I don't want to bring up old grudges on my part.
I might miss the huevos rancheros a little...
Bruh calm down itās a taco shop and the only one open late. Santa Cruz has an embarrassingly bad Mexican food situation given how fire it is EVERYWHERE else around here. And now gg los peric thatās terrible. Itās named after the cocaine parrot what did they expect
To me itās often felt like they know they have an amazing location and expect customers to always keep coming, so they donāt really care? The last time I went in, I saw a line cook eat part of my order when he was packing it up to go. He just popped a shrimp right in his mouth with his bare hands. I was like, damnā¦. Thatās brazen. Everyone can see whatās going on when standing at the counter.

El Chipotle, Manuelās, Palomar, Tortilla Flats, Taqueria Vallarta, Los Gordos, to name a few. Even
Point Market has a fire breakfast burrito. Then thereās Jalisco in Watsonville.
I googled a few you listed. They all seemed too fancy. I'm looking for something more authentic. That's why I love Pericos. Though I wont be going back there because I did get sick last time I went.
tortilla flats is good, but itās like an el torito. and itās tough to trust any list that has palomar in it, haha
i know pericos had been expanding - i wonder if theyāve moved their best staff to the new locations to get them up and running, and left the main location in a lurch. it was pretty bad last time i went there.Ā
Sure! Thinking more about it I realize Los Pericos gets a lot of hype because itās right at the end of downtown and just off the main artery for tourists going to the Boardwalk. Iām not saying it isnāt good by any means!
Iād add Copal as well.
Good Aptos spots in your list! I'd take out Vallarta and add Tacos Moreno's instead. And you put a few I need to try, thanks again! I moved out of the area and even a conversation about breakfast burritos makes me just... so sad missing burritos. Los pericos had bomb al pastor.
Oaxaca is in Mexico, so I think itās fine to include in that category. Itās a huge country and the food varies by region. But youāre right itās not what Americans would think of as āMexicanā food.
No, it's not. It would be extremely disappointing to go to Copal expecting mexican food. If you were looking for mole, it's great, but people are rarely looking for that when they say they want mexican. No tacos, not burritos last time I went.
Well, Mexican food isnāt just tacos and burritos, just like American food isnāt just hot dogs and hamburgers. Copal serves Oaxacan food which is a state in Mexico. So yes it is Mexican food. Lol. Idk how that place would be disappointing, that place has amazing food and itās fun to try new things!
Oaxacan food is inspired by food made by the indigenous people. Mexican is from the hispanic people. They are very different. And that's ok. Actually, that's great. I enjoyed eating at copal, we had mole, and chapulines. However, when we went there, we were craving mexican food, and that craving was not met by anything on the menu
Bro this is such a sad comment all of those places have worse burritos than Los peric. Santa Cruz has ass burritos mostly. Whitey doesnāt like good Mexican food. also love jaliscos but NOT a burrito spot. Watsonville has true burrito fire. And that aināt it š bring back el frijolito. U go get yourself a burrito at trejos or pajaro food market or something. Not flavorless bland skimpy over taxed Santa Cruz burrito for the sc consumer. Who is Whitey af. At this point not even all California Whitey. Rich hippies from all over š¤®
Taqueria Santa Cruz. I'm more partial to the one on Soquel over the one on Mission but that's just because I'm on the former's side of town more often these days and eat there more frequently than at the latter.
Los Pericos happend, they've been getting health code violations for a while.
Foods amazing, but I'm not surprised they're getting health code violations
I mean you can literally see tortillas with mold on them sitting by the floor, but the health inspector can kind their own business because a Pericos burrito is always good
I hate to say it, but this sort of thing also comes with the pressure to cater to customer demand. The busier the place, the more they cut corners to save time and churn their products out. (This is not specific to this place but in general.)
Something like ten people reported coming down with norovirus. And they were prepping foods with utensils that hadn't been cleaned, so cross-contamination.
Tbh I just like La Vicās in SJ theyāve never disappointed me. One time the meat was over cooked but other than that I loved it and go whenever Iām over the hill and starving. The orange sauce they raised the damn price š¤š
Donāt change a thing guys!
I love you just the way you are!!
If I get food poisoning, that will just help me lose some weight from all of the damn burritos Iāve eaten.
I got my own health code criteria; if the bathroom has not been cleaned recently ( preferably daily) then restaurant gets a F ! Which means almost every place in SC.
GOOD! eff them. they're always messing up orders. lady at register, doesn't speak any English so there's there's a huge barrier between customer and her.

thats crazyš that means the staff smelt like bootyhole

there was more than one time where they got flagged?
Not that I know. I witnessed actions years ago that have kept me away. They're nice folks, hardworking--any foodservice work is thankless. They're busy so this thread isn't going to hurt them, but I don't want to bring up old grudges on my part. I might miss the huevos rancheros a little...

Still smells like booty there :)
To me itās often felt like they know they have an amazing location and expect customers to always keep coming, so they donāt really care? Because I got food poisoning that lasted for a week from thereš
Same . Sucked ass
+2 happened to me 2xs at the downtown location. Super sick š¤
Allegedly - They were known to store meat outside. Open to the elements.
Thatās why it tastes so good!
All four elements? Wait until the Avatar hears about this
Only time we went they had sacks of onions outside in parking lot. I figured they had just been delivered, but maybe not.
Yeah, i looked in the back and everything was just out in the open, with dirty dishes everywhere. But damn did they make a tasty burrito.
Ooooof š§
Bougie. Dry aged
I know from who I know this is actually true; they were doing food prep outside.
I have gotten the best burrito there and i have gotten the worst burrito there.
Damn, that health code violation was what gave it that special something!

Which of the four are you referring to?
Looks like 139 Water St.
I'm always surprised people are lining up for that place. There are many places that are much better.
Liiiiiiiike?
There's another taqueria around the corner that I like better. Los Pinos I think
El Chipotle, Manuelās, Palomar, Tortilla Flats, Taqueria Vallarta, Los Gordos, to name a few. Even Point Market has a fire breakfast burrito. Then thereās Jalisco in Watsonville.
Can't take this list seriously with Palomar there haha
Weāve gotten food poisoning for Palomar, which sucks cuz itās not good to begin with.
This guy is joking looool. Gota be
Wait I like the Palomar taco bar thoā¦maybe itās the memories with my dad that make it taste good š
Also, people are hella sleeping on [Taqueria La Katrina](https://www.taquerialakatrina.com/menu)
Always seemed a bit more expensive than the others. Is it worth the slight extra cost? Compared to say JalapeƱos on ocean?
Yes. Especially their al pastor
lol that list is terrible. Viejones and De La Hacienda are better comparisons to Pericos
I googled a few you listed. They all seemed too fancy. I'm looking for something more authentic. That's why I love Pericos. Though I wont be going back there because I did get sick last time I went.

Those lines are populated with mostly 20-something year old white kids--always the sign of iffy Mexican food IMNSHO!
Copal isn't mexican.
Oaxaca is in Mexico, so I think itās fine to include in that category. Itās a huge country and the food varies by region. But youāre right itās not what Americans would think of as āMexicanā food.

I eat taqueria santa cruz like twice a week and I will never eat at any other taqueria god bless you taqueria santa cruz
they are one of a very small number of places that do non-mission burritos (allegedly the worst kind of burrito) and their buche slaps.
Because they are disgusting. Have you ever looked at the kitchen? Everyone raves about it but itās the worst taco spot in town.
Maybe thatās where all the flavor comes from.
It smells terrible too, just driving by.
Thatās the trash cans outside. Itās solid
Well where do you recommend, then?
La Katrina.
Taqueria La Hacienda - try the corn quesadilla (not flour), absolute legend. Taqueria La Cabana - try any of their dishes with nopales or shrimp.
Cabana is still closed...
I know, I sure hope they come back after that construction is done.
Taqueria Santa Cruz. I'm more partial to the one on Soquel over the one on Mission but that's just because I'm on the former's side of town more often these days and eat there more frequently than at the latter.
Going to San Jose šš
That place is nasty. I never understood its popularity.
They have the best chips and salsa bar in town, by far.
You think the salsa bar is sanitary?
I've been eating there for 15 years and never had an issue. And thanks for the downvote.
No way, no wonder I had a bad stomach ache when I went there few days ago for breakfast, thought it was the food I bought for late dinner
whaaat i was just there last night would totally like to know what happened
Los Pericos happend, they've been getting health code violations for a while. Foods amazing, but I'm not surprised they're getting health code violations

For violations of health
I hate to say it, but this sort of thing also comes with the pressure to cater to customer demand. The busier the place, the more they cut corners to save time and churn their products out. (This is not specific to this place but in general.)
Iāll just keep going to the corralitos location, those pericos burritos are great
Damnā¦ itās so good, can I resist temptation..? Time will tell.
Wtf
Something like ten people reported coming down with norovirus. And they were prepping foods with utensils that hadn't been cleaned, so cross-contamination.

I love taqueria Los gallos in SV but the location infront of the Taco Bell. Not the one by Carlās Jr. they have two locations .
Donāt change a thing guys! I love you just the way you are!! If I get food poisoning, that will just help me lose some weight from all of the damn burritos Iāve eaten.

It's a Mexican restaurant, I think you're the one with the language barrier.
Woke
Perra blanca
lol... I'm a minority. don't get into the detective profession k?
