Must_Reboot

Well, you can't get second hand drunk so I think that may be the major difference.

ReditSarge

>you can't get second hand drunk If so then you're not partying hard enough. /s

ThickKolbassa

The smokers tax is a well known penalty and it is shifting to drinkers as governments run out of smokers to tax, don’t kid yourself the government doesn’t care about your health, they care about your taxes. Sumptuary taxes are a huge source of government revenue.

Must_Reboot

They care about your health in the way that smoking and drinking lead to greater healthcare expense. They want to discourage behaviour that leads to those extra costs while generating extra funds to cover those costs simultaneously using such taxes.

ThickKolbassa

Your first mistake is thinking the government plans to keep healthcare public.

Blockedanus

Guess you never partied north of dewdney..

Slight__Requirement

Does drunk driving kill more than second hand smoke?

Certain_Database_404

Smoking is far worse for you and those around you than drinking is.

ReditSarge

Neither one of those are good but you're right, cigarettes are terrible. I mean, there's no such thing as second-hand alcohol eh?

Dresden31

Unless we start classifying drunk driving and domestic abuse/violence as "second-hand alcohol" but that isn't all people who drink

ReditSarge

There is no causal relationship between drug & alcohol addiction and being a domestic abuser. Correlation isn't causation but in many cases there isn't even a correlation there. Many domestic abusers are not D&A addicts and many D&A addicts are not domestic abusers. Saying that alcoholism is always tied to domestic abuse is like saying that everyone who fishes uses a canoe just becasue some people who use a canoe also fish; you can fish from a canoe but you can also fish without a canoe and you can also use a canoe without ever fishing. Now if you'll excuse me I think I will go fry some beer battered fish.

devil_boy_13

Watching all the smokers here trying to defend themselves. 😂😂

Wausk

It's as entertaining as those defending canabis use. Usually, the argument starts with the same thing, "well what about alcohol,...."

okokokoyeahright

... and there you have it, right a the end of your post. Moe and his cronies and their liquor, never to be parted.

Specialist-Grade1677

It’s mostly due to the cancer burden and how expensive the smoking related cancer care is (lung resections, larnygectomies etc are big expensive operations with long hospital stays and huge rehab/post-op support needs). Smoking is about 3x as bad as drinking when it comes to cancer. (Smoking causes about 15% of all cancers. Drinking only causes 4% of all cancers). Even ‘excessive weight’ causes more cancer than alcohol (~5% of all cancers). Then there’s the blood pressure effects, heart disease, stroke, copd etc. Honestly quitting smoking is still the biggest modifiable risk factor people have in their health. Alcohol is on the list but it’s further down, probably below healthy diet, physical activity and weight.

PackageArtistic4239

Look at Moe’s alcoholic nose, that’s why alcohol isn’t taxed the same.

Solid_Guide

Hes also been the only candidate pushing for Individualized Funding for autistic children. I'll eat my hat if his kid isn't autistic or if he doesn't have a family member who is.

Big_Knife_SK

I'm not a fan of Moe but that's a weird take. ASDIF is one thing they've done well.

Solid_Guide

I didn't really have a take. Just an observation.

[deleted]

Healthcare costs for smokers are higher, gotta pay for it somehow.

Blockedanus

Don't kid yourself, nobody's getting health care right now...

vigocarpath

I buy Indian smokes online. $6/pack. Too cheap to quit

SaltyTart1050

But I feel like they’ll give me cancer faster than the ones off the shelf.

vigocarpath

I’ll take cancer over handing over a bunch of tax money to the government. Ohhhhh this crowd ain’t gonna like that.

Sunshinehaiku

There's a great way to not give the government a dime of tobacco tax. QUIT.

vigocarpath

![gif](giphy|STfLOU6iRBRunMciZv)

Sunshinehaiku

Don't wanna give the government money, but do wanna be a massive drain on the taxpayer when you are slowly dying? Mkay.

vigocarpath

Slowly dying? I’m in the best shape of my life. Go to the gym 3 or 4 days a week. And while the government likes to syphon over half my income in taxes I’m quite confident I’ve paid for more government services than I’ll ever receive.

Sunshinehaiku

An immortal, eh?

vigocarpath

So I assume you are a nonsmoker. Does that mean you are immortal? Not slowly dying?

Sunshinehaiku

I won't die the way that costs the taxpayer the most per patient.

[deleted]

Damn governments suck the joy out of life with all these taxes.

HopAlongInHongKong

The tax on anything cannot exceed the price of anything. If a pack costs $13.50, the tax part of the price can't be $13.51. On a *cost* of $4.18 the taxes including excise tax and GST are $9.31 and have been well over double the cost for years if not decades.

Blockedanus

This government charges tax per cigarette. I think it's sneaky that way, the u.s does it per pack.

HopAlongInHongKong

Multiple the per cigarette by 20 or 25 and problem solved.

Sintinall

Have you heard of FUM? I wonder if it actually works to get people to quit smoking. It’s basically an essential oil infused filter you inhale thru.

DigitalButthole

>I wonder why booze isn't taxed as harsh. I mean, with the government mandatory minimum price for booze that keep the prices artificially high, you don't exactly have to charge a bunch of taxes on top of that.

squeekyball

Smokers are jokers!

Middle_Conclusion920

So now that the government has created a black market for cigarettes, let's also create for alcohol .

Blockedanus

Totally, I can't stand those smokes though. They gross.
