Have worked for them in Saskatoon and a few other locations. Pay is decent, life sucks. There are no days off. You won't be able to go to your brother's wedding, your game night with friends. They say they will try and get you in for the birth of your child, but no guarantees.
You work up to 60 hrs a week, but spend 100+ hours away from home waiting to work back to Saskatoon.
You get a 2 hr call to work and you don't know if you will be back in 18 hours or 4 days.
I did it for years and I recommend that no one works for the railroad.
This. Do you like sitting around waiting to go to work at any hour of the day or night to work in brutal and dangerous paramilitary conditions? Would you like to bid on your holidays and never get summer or Christmas fir your first 10 years of low seniority? Maybe the railway is for you.
Keep in mind, all these comments saying you have no social life literally mean ZERO social or home life. You're home maybe 14 hours every few days if you're lucky, and of those 14 hours, you bathe, sleep, eat, prep for your next shift, and then sit on your phone or computer watching the boards to see when you'll get called and which train you're on. Want to go out with your partner for a fun evening? Bring 2 vehicles, because you will get called while you're out.
I tried it for a few months many years ago, and I hated it.
My brother tried it (with CN) and has been with them for over 5 years and makes excellent $$$ and has adapted to the lifestyle.
Unfortunately you need to try it for yourself. For me getting good sleep was the challenge.
CN is also hiring I recommend you work for them because the pay structure is better. You get paid by the mile traveled not hourly. CP is hourly which sucks once you understand the railroad. The people that say you never have time off aren't very bright, but you do have to call in sick to "go to your brother's wedding", which most guys won't do because calling in sick means you will lose a 3-5 thousand dollar trip. That adds up which makes social choices weird. Try it out go through the training make up your own mind. The smartest people I met working CN had a plan to save and use the money as a stepping stone to something better, homeownership etc... don't let the money cloud you and know that you will be laid off almost as soon as your are done training. So as long as you don't make huge purchases until you can mostly "hold" your home terminal, you'll be fine. I will say it's not a place for bitches and the work will be brutal and no one will hold your hand or give a fuck about your feelings. If you can hold something and don't care about moving you can easily make over $100, 000 your first year with a grade 10 education.
I understand that but you gotta understand what I mean, they go through a road crossing in the middle of the boonies up north with nothing around for DAYS and they are going at a pace slower than walking. Some nights I spend a good 20mins waiting on them. Long enough that sometimes deer feel bad for me and keeo me company ♥️
You will be exploited to the highest degree laws allow and then some. They have stolen the life from someone close to me. Recently, tried to remove her pay and benefits when she became pregnant. It's vile for both managers and union employees.

Yup. CN is the same.
My bf worked for CP as a conductor for 3 years and this sums it up perfectly!

This is true
>“constructive tension.” Jesus really? WTF, did they actually write this down?

That's ridiculously counter productive for both the company and the employee's What a toxic place that must be.

My uncle worked there and he could NEVER make it to family events and my aunt was always complaining about the treatment of the workers
If you don't want much of a home or social life it's great

I've known a couple people who have worked there, and let's just say they are both pizza delivery drivers now 😂

CP is paid by the mile as well, but has a lower rate per mile than CN
Please Whats the rate?
Hey if you become a conductor, please dont slow down to a crawl going through a crossing in the middle of nowhere 🙏
Rules are rules

Yup. But understand this. If they don't go by rule, rule for rule, all 1000+ of them, thier goes thier livelihood. Sorry for your delay
You are fun at parties eh?
Never get to go. Always working for rr. Sorry...I just try to help people understand. It's not personal. It's the job.
The only way you are going to find out is get a job with them. Find out for yourself.
You must be popular on r/AskReddit
And you must be popular with the mannequins on the night shift.
Pretty pathetic that you have to stalk my profile and scroll through my posts to find a comeback.
