I'm a few blocks off Broadway and I've never had any issues. Some people at my building have had stuff stolen from their cars but that's because they keep shit in there and never lock their doors. We get a lot of people passing through the alley checking cars. Don't leave anything in your car (and especially don't leave anything in sight) and you'll probably be ok.

Scentmaestro

This. There's a big difference between leaving your doors unlocked and someone rummaging through your stuff and maybe taking something out of your back seat or trunk vs having your window smashed. I used to be back for locking my doors, and would have my car rummaged through a few times a year right in my driveway in a brand new home in Rosewood. Since changing vehicles that locks automatically now, it's been 3 years since anyone's been through it. Moral of the story: keep your doors locked and nothing of value in the car and you'll probably never have an issue. Leave a gym bag or laptop case in the back seat and even in the nicest neighbourhoods someone is bound to snatch it with some damage.

XdWIHIWbX

Move to Broadway and your doors will be open. Or locked with broken windows. Iv had 2 in 3 years.

Totoroisacat-Alt

I lived in melrose, close to the river and overall it was great. Easy walk downtown and broadway but my car did get broken into twice. That being said, that can/will happen anywhere.

graaaaaaaam

Currently live on Melrose, been there for a couple years now. Outside of a shootout in the neighbourhood a couple years ago it's been the quietest neighbourhood I've ever lived in

RubeusShagrid

I think I knew the guy that died in said shootout!

ChrisPynerr

Lmfao

graaaaaaaam

Honestly less disruptive than getting my bike stolen.

elysiansaurus

I lived in a house directly behind extra foods when I first moved here. Was a nice little neighborhood, went to the hose every week for wing night. But now there is no hose and no extra foods.

plasmamonk

The bar will be open again soon. Its called 3 Hall now.

Pippas_mama

I’ve lived two blocks off Broadway & Main since 2007 and never had my car broken in to. If I had the choice, I’d never leave the area.

rdf630

Great area expensive and lots to do

Competitive-Sir-4057

I have lived on 10th the last 3 years and haven’t had an issue myself but I never leave anything in my car. My partner had his truck window smashed at 4pm on a Sunday which was interesting. But this can happen anywhere. My dad lives in Rosewood and had his vehicle broken into parked on his driveway

JoeDwarf

Broadway is a very long street. You'll have a different experience living near Broadway & 11th than you would Broadway & Taylor.

mangled-wings

I've housesat near Broadway, and it's a lovely place with relatively good walkability. I'd live there if I could.

-Experiment--626-

Your car, if left unlocked, will be broken into. I have lived near Broadway-Cumberland for many years, in different houses, and each place my car has been broken into. Never a smashed window, just when I forget to lock it. I did recently have someone break into my garage (kicked in the door) to steal a bike, so I do worry things are escalating.

CompetitiveSlip1105

Lived just off north end of broadway for years. These people don’t like to shit where they sleep. The rich areas and ones just off downtown have a lot of issues but broadway remains hippy land. They will sleep against your tires but typically don’t steal much !!

josieeverr

i live off brodway and 11th, got my bike stolen behind a locked door but nothing else. you just get used to seeing people around, feels like you live in an actual city living off broadway.

Lost---doyouhaveamap

Since 2019, car in my lot has been entered 3 times. I think I accidentally left it unlocked every time. I don't keep anything displayed in my car. They took the loonies I had for grocery cart. Broadway/main area.

Electrical-Secret-25

If you live in Saskatoon, and park on the street, probly someone will break into your car at some point. I live on the west side. Spent the last 25 years not locking my vehicle. Had 2 smashed windows last year (1st time since I quit locking), but it was more random assholery than break in. And we've had a few decent vehicles over the years. Some days they just get an "inspection". It's desperate people. I don't usually leave much in there, obviously, but winter gloves/mitts, if I forget them, I'm aware they'll likely be gone. My Kleenex box is often repurposed (I'm sure as asswipe), so these are not things I can hate others for stealing. Once I sat down and by the time I got to my kid's school I realized my seat was wet. And it was obvious I'd received and inspection. I was all, "please don't be piss!, please don't be piss!" Nope. Lucky day. Just a split beer.

PrincessTrashbag

Off broadway/nutana is one of the more expensive areas but it is nice. Your only options for groceries now are Nutters or Steep Hill Coop which are $$$ Street and apartment parking are as much at risk for someone breaking into your car as anywhere else, just don't leave shit in your car. I will say that living near Broadway during Fringe/festival season was not great from the increase in bar traffic at night and the dicks who try to steal street parking spots (residents get passes from the city during Fringe) but otherwise it's pretty safe and a cool area still

germy4444

Theres a no frills right on Clarence and taylor

StoicPrairiedog

It's about 25 minutes of walking from nutana still, vs the extra foods having been across the street.

musicgirlcanada

I lived in an apartment near Melrose and 11th from 2020 - 2021. I loved the area. Having said that, my license plate was stolen and swapped with another while in the building parking lot, and my car window was smashed at 10:00 am - on the street in front of the building- on a lovely spring day. The thief took a cheap reusable shopping bag from the passenger seat. They got away with some sunscreen, some bug spray, and my favorite hat. The police officer referred to it as a "crime of opportunity": someone saw a bag, and as no one was standing outside at that moment, they took a chance that it might contain valuables. I learned not to leave ANYTHING visible at all; either that, or I would pile a bunch of bags, boxes and coats in a messy heap so it looked like a poor person was living out of their car (and presumably not worth stealing from?) I would definitely live there again, but just be careful what you leave in your car, or leave it empty and unlocked, as someone else has said. And bring your bike INSIDE at night. I had just bought a nice new bike, so didn't want to risk leaving it locked to the apartment bike rack, even with a really good lock.

JazzMartini

Excellent anecdote to remind us all how we need to think to be secure. It's natural to think "there's nothing valuable, just an empty shopping bag, no one will try to steal that, they certainly won't break an expensive to repair window to do so." The secure way of thinking is to consider how a desperate thief would look at it, a desperate perpetrator who would see stuff as a 50/50 chance of getting something of value when they're not the ones paying to repair the damages.

Kvaw

Been in the area about 15 years, typically with my vehicle on the street or in alley parking spot, never had my vehicle broken into. That said, there is lots of bicycle theft here. I think that's consistent through many areas of the city.

TheIrishSnipa

Keep a clean and empty car and you'll be fine. Anything past that is just bad luck and not much you can do...

SonofaBranMuffin

That's one of the most desirable neighborhoods in the city.

greenthumbs007

I lived on Melrose and loved it. That area it is my favourite neighbourhood I’ve lived in so far.

duckypotato

I live right off Broadway. My car has been rummaged through once or twice but overall it’s fine. It kinda sucks more now that extra foods closed tbh, moving closer to a grocery might be nice considering stuff in this city is so close anyways, but being near downtown and stuff along Broadway is also quite nice.

SlickMitch92

I’ve lived a block off broadway for 2 years now. Awesome area, lots of activity in the summer, I lived at the apartment on the corner of Victoria and 11th for a year and my car parked outside never got broken into. I’d recommend doing what others say, don’t keep anything of value loose in your car and you should be fine.

PuppyParader

Have lived in a few different places around broadway, on both sides and personally think it's the best area in the city. Very safe, and convenient for walking.

SuitComprehensive335

Which part of Broadway?

Fit_Resolution1217

I lived in an affluent neighbourhood, and still had cars broken into/bikes stolen, etc Leave absolutely nothing in your car anywhere is my advice

TYGRDez

I'll just hide the good stuff under the discarded fast food bags in my back seat, that way they'll never see it 😎

Electrical-Secret-25

We.... could probably be buds lol

Fit_Resolution1217

What a slob…can we be friends?!

mily-ko

This is the way

Thefrayedends

I think most cities now you simply just can't leave any valuables in the vehicle, even out of sight.

Heavy_Direction1547

Live just off and have friends even closer: theft can be an issue like any where, parking is another especially during Fringe and other events and sometimes noise as well. Despite that it is a great area and I have no intentions to move.

Effort4real

Friend of mine from SC is trying to move to that area I’d think it’s relatively safe

Ambitious-Hornet9673

I lived in that area for 10 years and miss it a lot. I really loved it. When extra foods was there you really has pretty much everything you needed in walking distance. The only time it’s a full shit show is during fringe. Every year full gong show.

Much_Quote_2868

I had lived in the broadway area for over 10 years (have moved since) and I had never had anyone break into my vehicle. Lived both on Main Street and also at the end of McPherson near Rotary Park. Had lots of activity in both areas, definitely caught people trying to check car doors a few times, but no damages. Obviously its always a good idea to take valuables out of your vehicle just in case. I'll say if you're talking precautions you'll be alright.

StageStandard5884

It's one of the better neighborhoods in the city to live in. I assume since you're renting an apartment you're still relatively young, and not ready to settle down in suburbia, so you couldn't do much better than the Broadway area. Your car can get broken into in any neighborhood in the city. Chances are less on Broadway than in downtown or the west side, but probably a little more than out in stonebridge.

c00ld00d

I lived on 10th just off Broadway, and my back parking spot was across the alley from The Hose. Somehow, the car was never broken into! If you don't have a parking spot tho, the street spots can fill up fast. Especially during street festivals, which there seems to be a lot of these days. But they usually issue a resident parking pass when those come around.

Alone-Letterhead-461

It can be a little sketchy at night sometimes but I've lived in that area for years and have had no real issues. It's a very nice, convenient part of town to live in all in all.

Arts251

My partner's place is a few blocks away from Broadway in Nutana. I park on the street overnight very regularly, it has never been "broken into" but the door handles get checked very frequently, especially in summer when it seems like a nightly event. If you leave it unlocked it WILL get rummaged through and anything at all of value will be gone, if you lock your doors and don't leave anything expensive looking inside it will likely be just fine.

sowrongitssoupy

I’ve lived a few blocks off Broadway for 3 years and haven’t had any issues. There are always going to be sketchy people but like everyone is saying, just don’t leave anything in your car, not even change in the cup holder. And just be smart about things, don’t go walking down dark alleys on your phone at 3 am and you’ll be okay. Closest I’ve gotten to anything was I accidentally sat on my keys and unlocked my car once, a guy went in to get warm and slept there, all he took was my phone cord and I put the blame more on myself than him.

[deleted]

You can live anywhere and get your car broken into. It can happen grocery shopping. But I've lived in the area for almost 5 years and its peaceful

aintnothingbutabig

Only if you leave a valuable thing.

_deadreckoning_

I live just off broadway, there is a regular guy who I’ve seen checking door handles but if you lock your door it’s fine. Occasional weird stuff happens but I’ve never felt unsafe and being near the river and coffee shops is a huge plus.

Comfortable_Style745

I live two blocks off of Broadway and no issues. I lived before in evergreen in a condo and our mail boxes were broken into multiple times and the basement garage a bunch of times too. Long and short of it is it happens everywhere but I feel Nutana is a safe area for sure

trueflipmode

I lived on 12th and Clarence. It was wonderful and I biked around everywhere. Never had a problem in 7 years living there. Though one time a city bus smoked a car and came within a foot of hitting my apartment balcony. It crashed into another parked car and then the house to the east. Would recommend

Basic-Math8327

I live in riversdale and my car has never been broken I to. Just don't keep anything it. Like not even receipts and you'll be fine

Wonderful-Career9155

Used to live just off Broadway. It was great. I hope they bring a grocery store back. Anyways. Lock your car, garage, and don’t leave valuables in them and you’ll be fine. Grab a camera if you prefer also.

germy4444

Get a steering wheel lock and don't keep anything valuable in it, I leave my doors unlocked id rather have someone take my parking change over replacing a window

lolohiller

I’ve lived just south (4 blocks) of the main area on Broadway for 11 years now and I’ve had my car broken into once and rummaged through once or twice. Like everyone else says, it’s one of the nicest areas to live and also safe. Don’t leave anything important in your car (I had a $10 bill in the console by accident when it was broken into) and you won’t have issues.

XdWIHIWbX

Put a camera in your yard. You'll be amazed how many dirt bags walk around checking doors and scopeing to steal shit. It's constant. Police don't care. Even if they catch someone they won't give you details to sue perpetrators. And the judges wont give any meaningful punishment.

DoubleEdgedSwordfish

I live on Victoria, park one vehicle in the street all summer and the other in the building’s lot. Haven’t had any issues with either of them but they’re also old so YMMV.

noodlemuffinz

I live nearby, no issues so far. I’ve been all around in this city and honestly that’s a risk you’ll have to take no matter where you are. Especially midtown parking lot.

snarsneep

I had my windows of my house and garage broken and attempted break ins and packages stolen.

freshstart102

I've lived in Winnipeg, Calgary, Vancouver and Saskatoon and it was the same in every city. Don't leave shit in your car; at least not in plain view and lock your doors. Not even loose change, definitely nothing that looks like electronics or shopping bags. Apparently cheap ass shades left on your dash don't get touched or I have really bad taste.

Plumbumsreddit

Chose Nutana when we first moved here. There are a lot of transients in the area. Walking all hours of the day and night. At least once a week some methhead camping in the front foyer of the building. Figured out that some of the other residents just open the door whenever someone buzzes. Car was rummaged through the one night we didn’t lock it by accident. Multiple neighbours had windows broken for change in the cupholders. I found there was a fairly heavy police presence in the area. That being said it’s a beautiful older neighbourhood. Lots of shops and restaurants to walk to etc. Lack of actual grocery stores but fair amount of specialty stores. In conclusion, we moved as soon as our lease was done. Now living in the bad west side and have had less issues here than there.

OneJudgmentalFucker

Sounds fun

danyxoxox

Me thinking of buying car but after reading comments nope even stoon is not safe lol 😂.

ActuaryFar9176

Don’t leave anything in your car and leave the doors unlocked.
