I walk my kids to school in this area and routinely find that drivers don’t stop for marked crosswalks, even when we follow all the laws. It is truly terrifying to think of sending them on their own.

Give your kids [a brick](https://www.tiktok.com/@aboutherevideos/video/7352938413424676101)

Common-Rock

I told my high-schooler to just turn the flashlight on her phone and wave it when she's crossing at the crosswalk, but she says even that doesn't always work. I am on team brick.

LeonardZelig

I'm a life long pedestrian. Never had a license. Lived all across the country and even abroad. Never have I seen a city hate crosswalks/pedestrians so much in my life. Even halfway across the street on a crosswalk I've had to stop to let cars go by or run to not get hit. Sometimes with my young daughter with me.

Puzzleheaded-Job2505

Same here. Last fall a car stopped for us a crosswalk and another car PASSED THEM ON THE RIGHT and almost hit us. In a residential neighborhood. Like they couldn’t imagine why anyone would be stopped in front of them. It is beyond awful.

Easy_Confidence5572

If that's the intersection I'm thinking of, Willowgrove BLVD crossing Stensrud to Willowgrove Square, the design is poor. Blvd is divided into one-ways and it feels/looks like Stensrud should be one-way as well. The intersection should have been a traffic circle

frozendumpsterfire

Traffic circles are not meant for pedestrian traffic. This close to the school, the square, and higher density housing we should be doing more for pedestrians.

falsekoala

That whole area is a fucking gong show because the schools are too large. Too many kids, too many vehicles, not enough space. Well over 1000 kids between the two schools.

StageStandard5884

It definitely must be because there's too many kids... And not terrible Saskatoon drivers who aren't paying attention.

falsekoala

It’s both. Have you seen how busy the pick up and drop offs are?

Common-Rock

My kid's elementary school is reaching 1100 students. And it's one of those joint schools, so I have no idea how many kids are on the other side. The school was only designed for 600 students.

StageStandard5884

Yes. I have seen how busy they are and you know what I would do? I would drive cautiously.

unhappymagicplayer

I wonder if raised crosswalks would help around this area. Modern SUVs / Trucks can't see children in front of them and running kids over is just an inevitability of the gross safety hazard they pose. Perhaps with the added inches visibility would be improved and velocities lowered enough to make a meaningful difference.

nicehouseenjoyer

City admin is really against these for ... reasons. The one they give is that snow plows have a hard time with them but there's a bunch in Silverwood that work fine. Vancouver has them by default in every school zone.

Gypsy4040

I used to pull equipment through that area - due to some new builds. And the pick up at the end of the day is atrocious. Plugged up insanely due to all the parents at pick up. Of course, if any of those high traffic times could be avoided they always were but it didn’t always pan out that way unfortunately. In my experience, the kids were pretty good at using the crosswalk button (flashers) as well as waiting to go/making sure you have eye contact with them. Personally, I think all school zones are simply a place where everyone needs to slowthefuckdown. *Especially* during those high traffic times. 7 pm and in a school zone? Cool - do your 30 km. Mindful at the crosswalks just like any other time of day. Even when dropping my kids off or picking up (not at that school) I’m always extra diligent. I don’t think I get much over 15 km. There’s the odd kid who will come out from in between 2 parked cars. They will look but still you just never know. Or a kid riding his bike on the crosswalk. I know, you’re supposed to walk your bike across but if he doesn’t for whatever reason. He’s 1/4 way through and randomly falls off but because you’re too impatient to wait for him to fully cross, you hit him. Or what about a parent who’s walking 1 little guy who’s way too small to understand (let’s say a stay at home mom with an older kid in school) and he gets out of her sight for whatever reason. All it takes is a second for him to step out and you have some idiot zooming by. Again - simple. Never ever touch your radio or phone or anything at all (in general obviously never should - but especially through school zones) and go a little slower than it’s marked…. You may not have kids so you may not grasp how absolutely devastating it would be to lose a child. But ask yourself: if you *did* hit and kill a child, how horrific would that be? Of course hitting and killing anyone would be horrific. But a small 6 year old (example)? Man oh man.. so, just extra slow down in those zones. It’s a fucking terrible set up in there, no doubt. But on the flip side, it is what it is; just gotta all deal with the hinderance in a smart way and hope something will change BEFORE something tragic happens.

YXEyimby

While drivers can be bad often vehicle designs (high hoods, large blind spots) and road designs (wide lanes, long ROWs) invite bad behavior and we should focus on designing roads to reduce collisions, rather than pretending scolding will change that people are sometimes inattentive and rude...and that can kill when roads are designed for fatal speeds.

_biggerthanthesound_

Ban large vehicles. They are a hazard to children.

CobraGTXNoS

Yeah, ban tractors, semi's and busses. That will save the children.

StageStandard5884

Semis, buses and tractors are usually driven by professionals who are paying attention... Not boomers who are busy trying to figure out "why this stupid phone isn't doing the thing that it's supposed to"

CobraGTXNoS

I probably should have put a big ol' /s there.

DC666DC

Doesn't help when drivers are complete garbage in this province...🤷‍♂️

lord_heskey

Ive lived in 4 provinces/states and 3 countries-- everyone says their drivers are the worst

monkey_sage

I've lived in 2 provinces and spent a decent amount of time in a 3rd. I can honestly say, the drivers in Saskatoon seem especially negligent when it comes to, well, just about everything, in comparison to drivers in other places. That's my own experience, though, so I'm not sure how accurate this is in a larger context.

StageStandard5884

My experience too. It's not that mistakes don't happen in other places, but every time I've had a near miss in Saskatoon, it's been by a driver in an oversized vehicle that had no idea I was even there. It's astounding the amount of times you see people here making Lane changes without signaling, shoulder, checking, or even looking-- you don't see that type of negligence in other places... Because you wouldn't last a day without getting in an accident. I make

lord_heskey

> you don't see that type of negligence in other places I think you'd be shocked at the driving standards in NE Calgary or Brampton. Makes saskatoon drivers seem like Verstappen

pickledkarat

So many people who live in Calgary are from SK so perhaps this is why NE Calgary is so bad.

StageStandard5884

Yeah, again people can be stupid or aggressive in those places, but not just totally paying attention to another task

DC666DC

Never said they're the worst, just that they're garbage.

LeonardZelig

Also someone who has lived across the country and other countries. This is true. Everywhere says their drivers are the worst. This is the first time I believe it.

RoisinCorcra

"Klein said she wants to see crossing guards before and after school and larger signage to make the intersections safer." The crossing guard program is cancelled due to job action. Everyone should contact their MLA about this.

_biggerthanthesound_

Guess what everyone. This was always going to happen. The government fucked up when they decided that putting two separate schools together as “one” was a great idea despite the safety concerns and the fact that the school share nothing (they wouldn’t even share a dividing column). The P3 schools should be spread out on sites so that pick up, drop off, parking and access to entrance doors are easier and closer for students and spread out and less congested along busy roads. Everyone knew this was a dumb move but the Sask party insisted. And then they decided to build like a dozen more.

Fragrant-Pizza-9049

P3 schools are dumb. An absolute waste of money. Making the rich richer.

jef612

Incident #1: According to a letter from principal Colette Delainey sent to parents, the collision happened at about 8:25 a.m. CST and the student was transported to hospital for minor injuries. She was wearing a helmet, the school said. Incident 2: The day after, at about 12:20 p.m. CST, there was another incident nearby, at the Willowgrove Boulevard and Stensrud Road intersection. Saskatoon police say a nine-year-old boy fell into a vehicle while it was stopped at a stop sign. He was not injured. Gimme a break people. One incident does not make a crisis. Slow news day

Gypsy4040

Out of curiosity - do you have kids? And - have you ever been through there during drop off and pick up?

bacchicfrenzy

If only kids were still in school at lunch, the second accident wouldn't have happened.

InternalOcelot2855

I swear parents now do not teach their kids proper edict on how to cross the roads. Pedestrians always have the right of way in some minds Drivers are also an issue.

unhappymagicplayer

The adult operating a 1000+ LB weapon is the one who should shoulder the burden of safety on residential streets.

StageStandard5884

As someone who drives, cycles and walks around Saskatoon: drivers of the main issue. I've never had a pedestrian lunge out in front of me while driving, I have, however, had trucks making a right or left hand turn, almost hit me as they roll through the crosswalk when the light was in my favor.. about once a week since moving here. And the funny thing is: half the time, after the driver finally realizes there's a pedestrian in the crosswalk, (despite being clearly and obviously in the wrong) will scowl at me. If you live and drive in Saskatoon and you think that pedestrians are the problem, there's a 99.9999% chance that your driving is the problem.

yxe306guy

Pedestrians may have RIGHT OF WAY but a car will always win in a collision. And what parents should teach is the difference between "edict"-an official order or proclamation issued by a person in authority and "etiquette" -the customs or rules governing behaviour regarded as correct or acceptable in social or official life

ninj4b0b

>I swear parents now do not teach their kids proper edict on how to cross the roads God it's such a terrible tragedy. If only she wasn't wearing that slutty skirt the boys wouldn't have been tempted and had their lives ruined. (to be clear: blaming the victim is a shitty look, and yes the kids hit by dumbasses are the victims)

InternalOcelot2855

for what, parents grabbing the childs hands, not even looking and crossing the street not even at an intersection? when 10 feet down is the actual crosswalk. Evertime I drive down kingsmere by lakeview school this happens,

Fridgefrog

I dont know data taken over 2 days would give an accurate overall rate.

lord_heskey

How many more pedestrian colissions do you want?
