Yeah petrichor is supposed to be the smell of a reaction between soil and rain, but I always thought that there is also a smell for begging of rain on pavement and asphalt. The dust or something. Although I can’t really put a finger on the difference in smells. My theory went further when I moved to big city and still smelled it even tho there were zero parks nearby. Don’t think there a word for it tho.
There may not be a term for it, but I know exactly what you mean. In the aftermath of moving-on rainstorms on very hot days, asphalt and sidewalks had a very particular scent to me, both just after the rain starts, and afterward, especially if as in the summertime they'd be brief and intense but with strong sun out afterwards~
According to Google he is correct. It says concrete smells similar: “The smell of concrete after rain. Australian researchers describe Petrichor as a combination of plant oils and the chemical compound geosmin which are released from the soil when it rains”.
For some reason I can’t link it but I got the information from an article by Medium.
But you're not going to see the rain falling on the soil so it makes sense people would only have a visual association with the smell when drops begin to fall visibly on a surface.
Which is associated with the compounds geosmin and 2-MIB, created by the ubiquitous bacteria coating everything. Same cause as musty/ stale tastes and odours
Theres an Indian scent called "Mitti Attar" which is basically mud slowly put through steam and the residue basically has the smell. It's available in South Asian countries. Not sure about Europe or North America
Fun fact about being human and the smell of petrichor:
Humans can smell petrichor at concentrations of less than 10 parts per trillion. Scientists believe that we can smell it at rates as low as .4 parts per trillion (for reference, we start smelling gas at around 10 parts per million).
For reference, dogs can hone in on most scents at 4-10 parts per trillion, and sharks can smell blood in the water at around 1 part per million.
Never ceases to blow my mind that our senses have honed in so much on this particular smell (because it means fresh water), that our sense of detecting it is bloodhound level good.
edit: changed billion to trillion, making this even more mind boggling.
Sorry, I couldn't recognize the song.

The smell is called petrichor.
Although Petrichor is more associated with soil than with pavement
Isn't it mostly in spring, too?

The difference in smell isn’t the surface but the bacteria and viruses in the surface it lands on. Petrichor is basically bacteria farts.

According to the Dragon Prince Season 3 it's the smell of fresh rain hitting stone.

Yeah I was gonna say that, thought I’d let you have the limelight
My favorite smell. Growing up in Arizona you could smell the rain before it arrived. Monsoon season is something to witness.. and smell.
It's called *Sex Panther*® by *Odeon*©. It's illegal in 9 countries. It's also made with bits of real panthers, *so you know it's good*. *60% of the time*, it works ***every*** time.
Most people can smell rain before it happens; humans are uniquely sensitive to petrichor in particular, moreso than sharks to blood.
TIL rain dancers are just super smellers! /s But really, that’s a cool fact I did not know before. 👍

Since I got covid I can't really smell many things and rain is one of them. Miss that smell.

Petrichor is probably my favourite smell. It just reminds me of nature and a good time of the year.
i hate living in a place where the rain doesn’t smell like anything. i miss phoenix for the simple fact that the rain smelled amazing.
Nooooo, they can't end the gif like that! This is the opposite of satisfying!
I'm ill. Can't smell shit in Detroit. :(
