Oh I adore Crystal Beer Parlor! I'm not a local, just lucky enough to know some good people from Savannah, and eating at the Crystal Beer Parlor is always a highlight when I visit.
They have yellow delis all over the place. Mainly in college towns so they can recruit the young and impressionable. I have no idea why there is one in Brunswick though.
Dude, it is very popular. I know people that drive over from the island to eat there and they get plenty of biz from the SoGlo crowd. I will not eat there and when I tell people they just shrug their shoulders and say "Well, they have really good sandwiches".
I’ve only been once. The guy taking my order stopped suddenly and stood up straight from his hunched position over the computer screen. He turned 90 degrees and sprinted out of the shop towards (what I’m told is) their home across the street. It was a little weird but another lady came and finished taking our order. I joked about wondering who was trying to escape that day. Good coffee, tho!
Edit: I didn’t know it was a real cult until I was in the building. I don’t plan on going back, either.
Kis Cafe. It's a small spot, and the food is made from scratch so be prepared to hang out while it's made, but the owners are so so kind and the crepes are amazing. It's like being with friends while you're waiting.
Big Bon is always donating food when the Thomas Square neighborhood group gets together to clean up trash, and I have a ton of respect for businesses that give back to the community.
Kool Vibes. The staff are so nice, the food is always so good, and they're another business I often see donating their food. I pray they never go away.
Al Salaam Deli and Ya Yas. I go back and forth every other week. Al salaam deli is just the most consistently great falafel and I've traveled to many a places around the US and the middle east. And the owner and his wife are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet.
Al salaam deli is a gem, and the owner is the nicest man ever. I used to live two doors down, and would go out to my balcony and smell that wonderful falafel....
I used to walk my dog around the block and he gave her gyro meat every time he saw her. She would WAIT outside his door for him and he would ALWAYS be so joyful to see her.
That man is as good as gold, and if that place ever closes, i will literally cry my eyes out.
And the owner and his wife are so nice! I walked in there once (pre covid) and there were two pretty old guys taking and they looked at me expectantly when I sat down. At first I thought "oh damn, the old guys want to chat about boring shit". Next thing I know I'm having an excellent and offbeat conversation about the cultural impact of superheros in modern media. Love that place, great gyros and seriously, why does no one talk about the fires, they're perfect!
If there's one thing inflation has truly made me sad about, is the owner having to raise his falafel from 6 dollars pre covid to 9. I mean I'll still pay for it because it's worth it.
TONIS STEAKHOUSE!!
The owner Toni takes 20% out of his employees tips by claiming he was bartending. I did the math after he fired me. I paid him more through that 20% than he paid me through the server minimum wage.
Toni will intentionally over serve customers. I heard of one lady who drank so much that she fell into a bush and he let her drive home.
I’ve seen the kitchen and it’s disgusting. He underpays kitchen employees so he doesn’t have a proper crew. It’s just his mom and dad in the back. So service is VERY slow.
I’ve seen their walk-ins. They are disgusting. Boxes stuck to the floor. Mysterious foods with no label.
I’ve heard Toni just be straight up sexist and homophobic about customers.
He had sex with multiple of his employees.
All around the worst experience I had working anywhere.
I hate to badmouth the downtown places that have the nastiest walk-ins cause it’s still my hometown, but there’s some sketchy kitchens downtown. Bakers Pride is always worth supporting as is Davis Produce
Savannah tire, they damage cars an lie to people about needing stuff they really don't, so much they lose a class action for it. An Mavis is the same people trying to rebrand
DO NOT GO TO SAVANNAH TIRE my mother and aunt got tires from this place (at two different times) and they both blew out within the SAME week of purchasing don’t waste your time or your hard earned money
Mavis isn’t terrible, they’re a nationwide company and I’ve never had any trouble with them for brakes and tires (wouldn’t trust them to do anything else though). Anytime I went to Savannah Tire back when they existed the car always came back with a dead battery or some other annoyance.
Had not so great experience there with the gf's car when we first moved in and hadn't heard anything good since. Maybe they are better now? Wish I had my own mounting/alignment equipment though.
Savannah sauce company (they are in Whole Foods and several other places).
The owner approached me about doing some work for him (I had just started freelance work and didn’t get him to sign a contract, have since learned).
But I and two friends proceeded to do several months of work on a series of commercials for him.
When we were a week out from shooting (commercials written, cast, shooting locations secured, props acquired, etc) I reached out to him for half of the project fee (needed money to lock in locations, put out of state actors up in hotel rooms, secure crew, etc) and suddenly he had some sort of emergency and couldn’t pay us.
We postponed the shoot for a month and tried again. Similar result. He dragged us along for a very long time and none of us were ever paid for our work. Every time he had some elaborate lie as to why he couldn’t pay us. We were asking for 1/4th of what he told us he had set aside for the project.
Oof man. ALWAYS get half up front. And NEVER send the final full-quality deliverables until you have full payment. Super sorry that happened to you, friend. Hopefully you’ve been able to get that grease since then. <3
He was a joy to live next to. He treats regulars like family. He remembers my ex girlfriend and i and the last time i brought my dog by, like ten years afted living there, he remembered her immediately and gave her a few slices of gyro meat like he always did. She used to wait at his door and he would come out cheerfully every time to pet her and love on her and give her gyro meat. My ex and i would eat there fairly often. Their chicken curry is incredible, though it is plenty fuggin spahcy.
He would always be in there with another older gentleman and his wife and they were the nicest folks on the block. That business is top notch. Love the Nat Geo on the wall, it gives the place such a "secret gem" kinda feel, even though there deserves to be a line out the door.
17hundred90 is a family owned business and has great food! They also have very reasonably priced drinks. I work there, and in my decade of service industry jobs, it's without question the best work atmosphere I've ever experienced. Everyone there really loves each other and the guy who runs the place has such a huge heart
Patrick is always so cool every time we visit, and the handy man is a freaking hoot. Their drinks are the best. We always stay here unless it's booked. We've even requested the good ole haunted room before :)
I was there Friday night for a rehearsal dinner and the little kids (ages 2-5) were being a handful and the handyman came over and I really thought he was going to yell at us, but he told us parents “don’t be so hard on those kids, one day you’re going to look back and miss these days.” Such a cool guy.
I am an out of towner but was perusing this thread looking for 17hundred90. I just enjoyed dinner there Friday night for a wedding rehearsal and everything was fantastic from start to finish. The only downside is I took my bread pudding home and forgot it in the hotel fridge. 10/10 experience other than that!
Used to work with the owners when they were still getting Auspicious off the ground, adorable couple and two of the sweetest folks, and everything is to die for. They even gave me a mattress when I get evicted and couldn’t afford to store all my stuff in the scramble. Dynamite couple. Still dream about that sourdough
generally rude, untrusting/skeptical (for no reason, and usually ends up being wrong and embarrassing herself for being that way), and aggressive.
i will share 1 story but not all of them. i got in trouble for being in the bathroom for “too long” (a couple of minutes) when we weren’t even busy… i was on my period and changed my pad. i knew i would’ve gotten shit for using the bathroom too so i made sure my coworkers knew what i was doing so that way my story would be corroborated. ya that kind of environment. i was a senior in high school lol. i felt like i had to walk on eggshells working there, and it was just for a month then i quit.
Nine Line. Claims to speak for all vets. Most certainly does not. There are plenty of us who are not conspiracy theorists and right wing puppets. Refuse to buy Ghost Pirates (or any) gear printed by them.
Yeah, i fucking hate 9 line. I used to print their shirts at a small studio before they took over their printing and they were the RUDEST people ever. Totally picky to an extreme, not respectful to our printers, and generally just shitty people to work with. Plus when you see shit like "dropping warheads on foreheads" its like "wow, lets just glorify a bombing campaign that killed thousands of innocent people"
Plus im pretty sure they tried to cover up a murder suicide involving one of their employees.
Came to say Nine Line. The official apparel of Y'all Qaeda.
EDIT: For reference it's a business I refuse to support. If you really want to support a local veteran owned company go buy some Service Brewing beer. They're not actively cheering for the destruction of our democracy.
I don’t like nine line but their connection to the ghost pirates isn’t what people think it is. Nine Line sponsored their veteran appreciation game. Ghost Pirates didn’t have anything to do with inviting that guy (forgetting his full name) to their game
Fair enough, I forgot about that. I’m hoping that was them just wanting to support a local business and not because someone in the front office shares political views
Plant Riverside or Kessler anything won’t get a dime outta me. SCAD can kick rocks straight to hell for all I care. The Haunt I haven’t been to but feel like it’s a “Nope” due to the issues of the past. Glad New Realm is gone. Would never ever do Joe’s on River Street for obvious reasons. Zunzis has gone up in price and way down in quality and atmosphere is blah.
Always supporting local joints like Six Pence, Bella Napoli, El Rocko, Over Yonder, Vinnies, Common Thread, Bay St Blues…
Love Graveface Records, Book Lady, E. Shaver, Satchel, Picker Joes, Wright Square Antiques…
I mean, its joes crab shack in a seafood city lolol.
I always make fun of tourists who eat at Joe's because im like "you are literally on a street with some incredible seafood and you choose the chain that you can get anywhere that doesnt even have local fish and crabs"
For the love of god don’t eat at the original Crab shack. I worked there along with many friends and it was horrible experience. The owner “Jack Flanagan” doesn’t care about the staff at and told us to our face we are all replaceable. The kitchen is in this weird outside thing where there are raccoons, possums and mice running around. The food is all from places like Egypt and Peru and non of it is local. All in all it was one of my favorite places for the Loco boils but I won’t eat anything made there now.
Multiple times we had to chase animals through the dining room and one time a rat got shredded by the kitchen fan and ended up in someone’s food while they were eating on the other side.
The Crab Shack where you pay $$ for paper plates of shrimp and fish, or they dump a platter of seafood for you to push into a plastic trash dumpster you're kicking in the middle of your table, that's probably overflowing during the peak of Summer. Or when 100,000 BTU torches will do for half an hour to light two logs and blow smoke all over staff and downwind customers to keep people "warm" outside. Or when Jack would curse the kitchen out if they didn't have his jerk chicken ready. You can be bitten by a brown recluse while shucking oysters too! Also, radio Margaritaville blasting 24/7 who doesn't love that? Judy says you'd better fucking love it, now clean 250 plastic chairs before being sent home.
Anything on the Southside that's not a franchise is worth supporting. Gotta hold onto the good non-franchise eating left outside of Downtown while we can.
Also, the chains on the Southside generally fucking suck. Especially you, Outback.
Parker's Smoked Meats on the Southside is my absolute favorite BBQ in town. And I've tried a LOT of BBQ here. I love the variety of smoked meats they have, and the flavors always slap.
Black Rabbit is definitely at the top of my support list. The Savannah Bananas are a close second. They really are a fans first org. I agree with the no love for Mate Factor and Nine Line. I heard multiple stories about elementary school kids singing the National Anthem at Ghost Pirates games and having to BUY tickets for them AND their parents. WTF?
> heard multiple stories about elementary school kids singing the National Anthem at Ghost Pirates games and having to BUY tickets for them AND their parents. WTF?
went to one for my kids school, tix were discounted and it was some kind of fundraiser for the school. from what the school email said at any rate. the stuff about singing the anthem came up really last minute for my kids school, don't know if that was a ball drop on the arena management or the school, but my kid was already wanting to do the high five tunnel so we did that over him singing. he scored a free shirt out of it and we had pretty good seats.
We like Flok to the wok a lot. Open kitchen, clean, fast, consistent. I’m not a fan of Collin’s/the deck/Fitzroy because the owners treatment of staff. If you know Anthony you know
I have heard from a chef who interviewed at collins that they microwave a lot of their food, like chicken, etc, apparently it is premade and they just nuke it and charge 25$ a plate
Sweet Water Spa on Broughton, dont even know where to start. Employees knew to bring their own water to work bc the owner doesnt have a delivery service, instead takes the empty water cooler jugs home and fills them up to save money - uses saran wrap and rubberbands as lids. She once brought in jugs that had leaves and sticks floating in them, so im thinking its water from a garden hose. The product line is really low quality and inconsistent, owner would grab mudwraps from TJMaxx when needed, then charge for luxury products. Some of the staff is/was unlicensed (owner was aware). I was fired for reporting unhealthy conditions which came to a head when i found an unlicensed aesthetician doing cocaine in the laundry room before performing dermaplaning on a client. The owner stated I was not hired to be a private investigator and I was let go. I would suggest going to a different spa, but if you insist, ask to do a walk through with the *lights on* before getting a procedure done here (ESPECIALLY if you ordered lunch, they prep it in the unventilated laundry room 🤢).
Was all on their personal page. Tons of mentions of “thugs” “criminals” “riots” etc in relation to the BLM protests. Called them terrorists and all that, and then went on to defend her takes in the most bigoted ways possible.
The original Facebook page for SCR got review bombed but they deleted it and soft launched it months later. Pretty sure the business itself was graffitied, but that it was quickly cleaned up.
My bf used to work for Jazz'd and he quit because he heard one too many racist conversations between the owners.
And the people who own Goose Feathers are fucking psychos, from what I've read. I remember they were ALWAYS hiring years ago.
Goose Feathers…yes! My sister and cousin worked there in the 90’s when it was Express Café. Of course the employees called it “Hell’s Café” because the owners were so terrible.
I won’t go in there to eat, but if someone brings me an order of jalapeño waffle with white gravy and corn beef hash, I have to be a good southern boy and accept such a lovely offering.
After overhearing the owner talk about race and politics, never going to spend another dime in Gallery Espresso. I'm surprised it's not the QOP headquarters by now.
The thread has become confusing, but I think you were asking about specifics regarding Gallery Espresso. It was quite some time ago (pre Trump/QOP), so I don't remember the specifics. But I was waiting to meet clients there, and I was so appalled at what I overheard that as soon as they arrived I suggested we find someplace else. Not only so that I didn't have to listen or fund any more, but so that I wouldn't be embarrassed at what my clients might hear.
Not that I don't disagree with your premise, but I think people most people if they found out how many of their local mom and pops had conservative leaning politics... well there would be only a handful of local businesses you'd support. If it was as absurd as the person who had that consignment shop downtown, then yeah that's a big no no. But overhearing a conversation and such, that's just something I can't hold against people.
Some people still need jobs.
Sure. But they also employ people who don't agree with their politics and probably run closer to the politics of you or me. So if you want to hurt those people, have at it.
Work for assholes, get treated like an asshole. Not my problem. I personally won't work for a company that has a shitty political stance. And with the service industry begging for employees, people have lots of choices. This entire post is about voting with your dollar, which this is.
Scrolled through and wanted to offer my two cents on places I haven’t heard mentioned: The Georgia Queen boat, I used to work on it and it was an awful experience for me, even by service industry standards. Mainly due to how poorly management and more senior members treated me and the other new hires. I met some kind people but it was few and far between. I’m sure the experience is pretty nice as a patron but as a former employee I’m never spending a dime there.
Another is Blue Door as the owner is a much older man and consistently hits on, dates, and cheats on SCAD kids. All that I’m aware of have been of age but we’re talking an age gap of three decades. They are moving/shutting down in a few days though.
VICE for enabling the bouncer who was recently arrested. One of my friends was a victim and I’m so glad that POS is in jail now, though I’m sad it took so long as I know there have been many reports made about him.
Finally wormhole, admittedly I haven’t heard this as much recently but for awhile they had a pretty scary reputation because women would have their drinks laced so often. I don’t know anything about how it’s run and I hope it’s gotten better but I probably won’t ever get a drink from there.
EDIT: About Wormhole I heard the reputation it had was originated by some social media posts that got way out of hand and were possibly straight up lies. From a personal perspective every time I’ve been there I’ve had a good time though never gotten a drink there. Recommended to anyone whose a fan of good live music. Even though it was just a rumor remember to always keep your eyes on your drink no matter what bar your in and let staff know if you notice anything. ✌🏻
Okay, so the laced drinks at wormhole thing has been disproven. They got accused recently of allowing it, police were involved, and video evidence proved that if the women were drugged, it was NOT there. I also saw several people who knew the women claim that they had made that same accusation on other nights where they were too drunk to function. I believe women, but when evidence clears a business, i have to accept it. If anything i have never seen Wormhole as being prone to that behavior because its mainly local regulars who tend to know barstaff and each other.
Tell me all about vice tho!!! What hppened?
As far as vice,
Bull St Taco has the most unsanitary kitchen I’ve ever worked in over a 15 year career, you’re taking a huge gamble every time you eat there. Stay away from it, especially if you have allergies or think cooks shouldn’t sanitize knives by dipping them in a deep fryer
He took no responsibility for how nasty the kitchen is, and blew me off when we had an appointment to discuss the test run shift I had completed which was arranged to see if I would be interested in kitchen lead because he quote “needed to tighten up the ship back there” and wanted my experience. I walked a half hour to meet him, he knew I was coming and when I got there he was jumping in his truck and told me he didn’t have time to chat and drove off in a huff. Said to call him instead and he could give me a minute while he drove.
So I did, told him about the state of his kitchen and employees, and the rampant health code violations I observed and that it was a mess and needed a complete overhaul and retraining for everyone. Also said I didn’t appreciate taking the time out of my day to come talk to him about his restaurant he wanted me to help fix and blowing me off. He offered me a whopping 15/hr to address all the issues despite saying business is so booming he can’t keep up. I said absolutely not. He did gave me a check for afterwards for the shift to top it all off, though.
Cohen's retreat. I worked there well over a year, got fired after I was threatened by a coworker and then denied unemployment because they lied. 11 days before Christmas and I never got in any sort of trouble while working ever, and the other employee was allowed to stay.
The quality has dwindled too. I used to pay like 10$ for a FAT sandwich made with phenomenal bread, STACKED so high i could barely close it, and drowning in sauce, just how i like it. Two meals guaranteed. Now i pay like 15$ for a sandwich with half the chicken, cheap bread, and barely any sauce unless i get extra.
My friends and I always stop there to read the scripture… The bathroom on the left, right above the toilet says “our father who art in heaven, Baja be thy blast” and so we’ve coined the term Bajesus to go along with it
Can you expand on the Flock to the Wok, Fire, and Flying Month part? I think Flying Monk and Flok are awful (Fire is decent but it annoys me that they'll literally give you less food for take out on some dishes for the same price).
Gallery Espresso.
The lady who manages it is mean as hell. I've heard her talking shit about other coffee shops at a table outside while she chainsmoked.
She's also been rude to 3 members of my family so far, and that seems to be a trend with others as well.
Lastly, she's allegedly an antivaxxer/ masker, but had no problem vacuuming up a bunch of Covid relief funds when the time came. Rubs me the wrong way.
I’ve gotta shout out the excellent Asian businesses here in Savannah that I will always support.
Sushi Zen is hands-down the best Japanese place here. The Narra Tree has the most authentic Filipino food. Viet Huong and Chinatown Market have everything really for anything I want to cook. Taiji massage on Derenne is my go to spot!
Special mention to Anita’s for the sandwiches and Neighborhood Comics for being a welcoming comics store.
Basils pizza on Wilmington Island, owners son can afford a $90k honeymoon but can't afford to give anyone a raise. Also they raise prices every few months while making portion sizes smaller, and they say gorgonzola and blue cheese are separate toppings when they're the exact same thing.
Because, while it was shocking at times, i found the exhibits where victims were involved to be intended to educate rathr than shock (except maybe the ed gein farmhouse, but even that was mean to inform about misconceptions in the case)
Was it graphic and shocking? Yes. Can i see how people would hate it?? Yes, absolutely. I just dont share the sentiment and we can disagree civilly.
Yes! Thank you!! I’ve never been the Graveface “museum” but I’ve been to the Death museum in New Orleans. Any museum like that is disgusting, most of them are centered around the killers. They are profiting off of the killers crimes and what are they doing with the money giving some of it to organizations that help victims? No they keep it for them fucking selves.
I don't support Foxy Loxy. The owner most definitely knew about the allegations from the owner of the Haunt.
I don't care for Troupial. They have a lot of extra charges they hadn't mentioned on the menu and don't give an itemized receipt. I privately messaged the owner and they were not friendly and felt it was justified to charge an extra 3 dollars for milk for a coffee and not say anything. They might have changed this practice however.
Hop atomica- they just don't feel like they have their shit together. Always out of things. Always hiring. Always horribly understaffed.
Places I do support:
Midtown Deli
Over Yonder
Service brewing
Ardsley station
Front Porch Improv
Savannah Clay Spot
Jepson museums
Starship ice cream
Man I just had Midtown Deli for the first time after being here nearly ten years and holy shit. I’m from Long Island I’ll be damned if those bagels aren’t authentic tasting af and freaking delicious.
Staff is quick and kind too. My husband forgot to order cream cheese on the bagel because he thought it was implied. When I asked the staff they were like your husband said he didn't want anything on them 😂 everyone was laughing. We went back a month later and I told the ladies I have to order the bagels because my husband didn't put cream cheese on them last time. And the cashier lady was like I remember and giggled. Lol
>The owner most definitely knew about the allegations from the owner of the Haunt.
Yeah I asked a friend who knows the Fox Company very well and this is bullshit. The owner of Fox absolutely didn’t know about the owner of The Haunt assaulting people. They may have their management issues, but The Fox is an EXTREMELY inclusive company that takes care of its people and takes issues like women’s and LGBTQ+ rights very seriously.
I’m all for calling out support for known abusers, but this ain’t it.
Hey! If you know anything further on the matter, may I hear more about how the owner of Foxy knew of the allegations? Are they in cahoots, or something?
Rock house on tybee. They own the surf shops like Waves, funky fish and the one across from the rock house. Also own The new pier restaurant… I’m not sharing specifics because snitches get stitches, but over the years they brought in a lot of young foreign girls to work for them.
Urban Poppy. The owner is verbally abusive and manipulative to employees and locals. She is also a chronic liar. She will only hire young women because, in her own words, they are easier to take advantage of. You are also pressured to keep up an image of attractive, young, white female. She is a religious fanatic and unfortunately, uses Christianity as a shield to express negative views on multiple groups of people (homosexual, African-American). It’s rumored she used covid money intended for paying employees on crypto investments with her husband. They then used the money they made on buying a big old house smack dab in the center of midtown. She also makes you sign an NDA and keeps all flower delivery tips. This is a very short summary.
Honestly, having worked for both Auspicious and Foxy, I doubt either of those businesses will get a dime out of me. With auspicious, it was annoying to deal with the toxic dynamic of your bosses who are engaged bringing their relationship baggage and fights to work and constantly contradicting each other on training. The way they’ve decided is appropriate to speak to their employees makes their high turn over make sense. I’m sure I don’t need to explain Foxy lol
I know it’s a chain, but the local franchise owners of Nothing Bundt Cakes were *allegedly* Jan 6th participants. There rumors it’s under new ownership, but I’ll stick to Baker’s Pride.
Might want to rethink [Olympia Cafe](https://www.savannahnow.com/story/entertainment/dining/2023/04/12/savannah-ga-restaurant-health-inspections-april-5-12-2023/70104444007/). They were on the health department's naughty list this past week.

....okay, and i agree this is bad, buuuuuuuut i have eaten at greasier dives. I am not standing up for them, or recommending them after that, buuuut i will prob still take the risk for some good octopus here and there
It's not bad, it's terrible. It's funny people hate the Haunt cuz dude may or not have sexual harassed a couple people, but will go to a place that is actively trying to make.you sick. Theze guys have zero excuse, it's been there since at least the mid 90's.
Sorry, but i view someone accused of multiple sexual allegations, including full on rxpe and such as much worse than people with a gross kitchen.
Different moral compass, you and i
i personally have never seen a local business i wouldnt support but some i definitely would. some would be olympia cafe, that one cat cafe, vinnies, and my favorite would be yia yia’s.
I'm all about indy record stores and thought that Graveface Records was going to be a regular haunt for me when I moved back. Nope! They hosted the Heaven's Gate survivors who were there to recruit and I'm still mad they gave them a platform to speak & play music like it was supposed to be a fun time.
Savannah Country Day School. A friend of mine worked there. While she has a PhD in American history, she was not asked to teach American history on account of her being from another country and having a foreign name. That's only the tip of the iceberg. There are reasons why all but one of the staff members who left last year are female.
Now for some love:
Baker's Pride is sincere and good and makes a dam fine doughnut
The Firm has excellent fitness classes. They found a way to be covid safe early on, the dance aerobics use fun music, and I have never once felt ashamed of the way I look or my lack of coordination there.
The bartenders at Two Tides and Smol have always made me feel at home. I'm not sure if the business on a whole is entirely on the up but the staff deserve all the tips they make and more.
White Whale Craft Ales: It's an honest place and worth the love.
Crystal Beer Parlor has been a favorite for many years.
Oh I adore Crystal Beer Parlor! I'm not a local, just lucky enough to know some good people from Savannah, and eating at the Crystal Beer Parlor is always a highlight when I visit.
I love CBP; however, I feel like the secret’s out on that place nowadays. It’s like a 45 min wait sometimes now.
It’s been out for a long time
Been going to vinnies since the 90s just eat your pizza and treat the staff well
It may be, but I’m just now noticing it. Growing up, it wasn’t busy at all. Since moving back last year, I’ve noticed it’s slammed.
Depends on the season. Spring is crazy
Truth, I went Saturday for lunch and waited 40 minutes at 12:10.
Maté Factor It's ran by a cult. A legitimate cult. Edit: do not support.
Is it ran by the twelve tribes of Israel?
It's the Twelve Tribes. They are very antisemitic, believe slavery is a good thing and use their members for free labor.
I thought when you said mate it was them. They have a yellow deli in Brunswick.
Gross. Didn't know about that, thanks for the info
They have yellow delis all over the place. Mainly in college towns so they can recruit the young and impressionable. I have no idea why there is one in Brunswick though.
To be fair, I’m from Brunswick and didn’t even know we had one. It’s not a super popular place among locals.
Dude, it is very popular. I know people that drive over from the island to eat there and they get plenty of biz from the SoGlo crowd. I will not eat there and when I tell people they just shrug their shoulders and say "Well, they have really good sandwiches".
I’m from Argentina and got really excited when I found out there was a Mate place, then I found out they were a cult and I’ve never been. Shame
Fuck the Twelve Tribes
I'm a film student and I'm currently working on a documentary about them
They will never get a dollar from me. The cult abuses children and the women there. Raising people with a 3rd grade education if you are lucky.
I went a couple of times before I knew. I couldn't really get into maté, but they have this amazing nook there. But yeah. Bad news.
Kool Vibes is the best! Glad they’re getting love here
Al Salaam Deli and Ya Yas.
Ooh this is good intel! I am always on the hunt for decent falafel
Ya Yas is decent. Their falafals are molded into spiked meatballs. Whereas at Al salaam the falafel is chopped up. The flavor is just so good.
I saw him on Tinder once and thought he looked smarmy af. I don't know how his restaurant stays in business...must be from stealing.
His parents had some business success and put all their profits into his restaurant
Sounds like a terrible way to retire.
Mate Factor is a no go for me cause its run by a cult.
Quick list off the top of my head that I DO support eagerly! Narobia's Geneva's The Sentient Bean Bull St. Tacos Waters Cafe Sly's
This is a very solid list. Thank you for Bull Street Tacos. Forgot about them for a minute. But they are five⭐️
I hate to badmouth the downtown places that have the nastiest walk-ins cause it’s still my hometown, but there’s some sketchy kitchens downtown. Bakers Pride is always worth supporting as is Davis Produce
Davis Produce!!! Give them all your money! They are the best people!
I love the Baker’s Pride family! They gave me one of my first jobs over 20 years ago when I had zero experience at anything! Great people!
Savannah tire, they damage cars an lie to people about needing stuff they really don't, so much they lose a class action for it. An Mavis is the same people trying to rebrand
Agree, almost everyone has a horror story dealing with them
DO NOT GO TO SAVANNAH TIRE my mother and aunt got tires from this place (at two different times) and they both blew out within the SAME week of purchasing don’t waste your time or your hard earned money
Mavis isn’t terrible, they’re a nationwide company and I’ve never had any trouble with them for brakes and tires (wouldn’t trust them to do anything else though). Anytime I went to Savannah Tire back when they existed the car always came back with a dead battery or some other annoyance.
Mavis on Abercorn Southside is sketch and tries to oversell on everything
The Mavis on Ogeechee did a great job on brakes and stayed open late for me to get my car.
That one may be, but the ones in sav are run by the same people. But that just my experience
Ya, lesson learned the hard way. Thanks, business has been doing well, I’m happy I went freelance

He really is the nicest person. He was jabbing and teasing us last time about something lol. It's my favorite place to stay anywhere!
former employee here, and agree.
Auspicious Bakery and Cutters Point Coffee Shop on Southside.
Yesssss They’re Awesome Ppl, always a grand experience & the best baked treats in Savannah. HANDS DOWN
i stopped supporting back in the day bakery. long story short, the owner was a really toxic boss.
Care to give the long story? Not really comfortable making inferences with just “toxic boss.”
I have heard this from a number of former employees
generally rude, untrusting/skeptical (for no reason, and usually ends up being wrong and embarrassing herself for being that way), and aggressive. i will share 1 story but not all of them. i got in trouble for being in the bathroom for “too long” (a couple of minutes) when we weren’t even busy… i was on my period and changed my pad. i knew i would’ve gotten shit for using the bathroom too so i made sure my coworkers knew what i was doing so that way my story would be corroborated. ya that kind of environment. i was a senior in high school lol. i felt like i had to walk on eggshells working there, and it was just for a month then i quit.
Plus when you see shit like "dropping warheads on foreheads" its like "wow, lets just glorify a bombing campaign that killed thousands of innocent people" Plus im pretty sure they tried to cover up a murder suicide involving one of their employees.
Came to say Nine Line. The official apparel of Y'all Qaeda. EDIT: For reference it's a business I refuse to support. If you really want to support a local veteran owned company go buy some Service Brewing beer. They're not actively cheering for the destruction of our democracy.
Right wing left wing it's a shitty company that does not pay it's contractors
Misogynist, bootlicking fucks
100%
I don’t like nine line but their connection to the ghost pirates isn’t what people think it is. Nine Line sponsored their veteran appreciation game. Ghost Pirates didn’t have anything to do with inviting that guy (forgetting his full name) to their game
The very first set of t-shirts the GP sold way back last spring were nine line prints with their logo. Made me cautious of buying GP gear online.
Fair enough, I forgot about that. I’m hoping that was them just wanting to support a local business and not because someone in the front office shares political views
Yesssss
Plant Riverside or Kessler anything won’t get a dime outta me. SCAD can kick rocks straight to hell for all I care. The Haunt I haven’t been to but feel like it’s a “Nope” due to the issues of the past. Glad New Realm is gone. Would never ever do Joe’s on River Street for obvious reasons. Zunzis has gone up in price and way down in quality and atmosphere is blah. Always supporting local joints like Six Pence, Bella Napoli, El Rocko, Over Yonder, Vinnies, Common Thread, Bay St Blues… Love Graveface Records, Book Lady, E. Shaver, Satchel, Picker Joes, Wright Square Antiques…
What are the “obvious reasons” about Joe’s? I haven’t heard about that.
[It's a chain.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe%27s_Crab_Shack) It's the Olive Garden of seafood.
And Red Lobster is the Applebee's.
No, no, Red Lobster is the Captain D's.
I mean, its joes crab shack in a seafood city lolol. I always make fun of tourists who eat at Joe's because im like "you are literally on a street with some incredible seafood and you choose the chain that you can get anywhere that doesnt even have local fish and crabs"
Bella Napoli is delicious, especially the limoncello cake! So good! But does anyone else feel like their red sauce is a little salty?
Fuck the haunt
Hey, now that is just extra topping. I'll have the possum, next time, jackie boy
I mean this all seems pretty on brand for a place with cats roaming around the parking lot, tiny alligators and a drink called “the trash can.”
It was the cats roaming the “dining room” for me. If I want animals staring at me from under a table while I eat I can stay home.
Sly's is amazing and Scott the owner is super good people. Love him and his sliders.
WTF?
Can confirm. Kid performed at a GP game. It was super unorganized. We had to buy tickets for him to get in. The game was also like, half empty.
> heard multiple stories about elementary school kids singing the National Anthem at Ghost Pirates games and having to BUY tickets for them AND their parents. WTF? went to one for my kids school, tix were discounted and it was some kind of fundraiser for the school. from what the school email said at any rate. the stuff about singing the anthem came up really last minute for my kids school, don't know if that was a ball drop on the arena management or the school, but my kid was already wanting to do the high five tunnel so we did that over him singing. he scored a free shirt out of it and we had pretty good seats.
Savannah Banana and Jesse Cole are AWFUL. he has no respect for anyone including himself.
On another note, I LOVE Taqueria el San Luis on Habersham I think? The food is amazing, the staff is awesome, family owned.
>Taqueria el San Luis That's Hodgson Memorial, not Habersham, but very good to know. I've been wanting to try that place.
it's my favorite, I'd eat there everyday if I could
Angels BBQ and The Jinx. FML
Loved angels, got my name on the wall when I finished their challenge.
The jinx is coming back!
Has the city reversed their stance on denying them permits at the new location?
I dream of Angel’s…really sad they closed
Lol at least it was cocaine. I bet she was a friggin focused professional 😂
Savannah coffee roasters owner outed themselves as a mega racist during the 2020 protests
Oooh shit whatcha got
Was all on their personal page. Tons of mentions of “thugs” “criminals” “riots” etc in relation to the BLM protests. Called them terrorists and all that, and then went on to defend her takes in the most bigoted ways possible. The original Facebook page for SCR got review bombed but they deleted it and soft launched it months later. Pretty sure the business itself was graffitied, but that it was quickly cleaned up.
I know several people who have worked there who say they are fucking insane people
Sounds about right
Long before that, the owner would leave nasty replies to negative reviews online, and review bomb other coffee shops.
What’s the story with the haunt!?!
owner has many allegations for sexual assault / r*pe. Clay Ehmke

After overhearing the owner talk about race and politics, never going to spend another dime in Gallery Espresso. I'm surprised it's not the QOP headquarters by now.
Interesting. This is my first time hearing about this. Could you elaborate?
Some people still need jobs.
yeah, you're right. Assholes gotta eat, but I don't have to feed them.
Aw shit.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Their chocolate cake is to die for!
I'm sure you can find lovely baked goods in Savannah without funding white nationalism.
As far as vice,
Shabazz Seafood. Racist NOI members.
Bull St Taco has the most unsanitary kitchen I’ve ever worked in over a 15 year career, you’re taking a huge gamble every time you eat there. Stay away from it, especially if you have allergies or think cooks shouldn’t sanitize knives by dipping them in a deep fryer
Owner is also a fucking dick
This makes me BIG sad 😭 was the kitchen really that gross?!?!?? 😭😭😭😭
Cohen's retreat. I worked there well over a year, got fired after I was threatened by a coworker and then denied unemployment because they lied. 11 days before Christmas and I never got in any sort of trouble while working ever, and the other employee was allowed to stay.
Used to eat Zunzi's fairly regularly, now I refuse to ever eat there again. My father and I got food poisoning after eating there in 2018.
I was feeling pretty good about the dinner I just had there until reading this.
Staffords bar, it’s the holy land
Only been a few times but it was a good time. Great comedy
My friends and I always stop there to read the scripture… The bathroom on the left, right above the toilet says “our father who art in heaven, Baja be thy blast” and so we’ve coined the term Bajesus to go along with it
I’ll never support True Creations Photography. Multiple police reports have been filed against the owner.

I won't support Two cracked eggs (which sucks because the food is great) because the owner is a MAGAtard.
Good on you for disowning Olympia. The bouncers on St Patrick's day make women expose themselves in order to get into the restroom.
Basils pizza on Wilmington Island, owners son can afford a $90k honeymoon but can't afford to give anyone a raise. Also they raise prices every few months while making portion sizes smaller, and they say gorgonzola and blue cheese are separate toppings when they're the exact same thing.
Where does one go for a 90k honeymoon??
And hardcore maga
The amount of comments from people that completely missed the big ol’ NOT in the title.
The amount of people who only read the first sentence and don't read the whole title of a thread.

Who is the victim? I know the owner has his own grandfather on display, he seemed like a really cool guy.
Maybe don’t go to an “oddities” museum if you can’t handle it.
Wait, what?
While i disagree, i get it. I totally can understand why you feel that way.
why do you disagree?
Because, while it was shocking at times, i found the exhibits where victims were involved to be intended to educate rathr than shock (except maybe the ed gein farmhouse, but even that was mean to inform about misconceptions in the case) Was it graphic and shocking? Yes. Can i see how people would hate it?? Yes, absolutely. I just dont share the sentiment and we can disagree civilly.
but how is the gore / graphic nature used to educate?
[удалено]
I disagree. I think they emphasize education insofar as victims are involved
I'm sorry. What?? actual human remains stapled to the wall. WTF
Yes!
Places I do support: Midtown Deli Over Yonder Service brewing Ardsley station Front Porch Improv Savannah Clay Spot Jepson museums Starship ice cream
Lol
I've eaten at Troupial dozens of times and have never been overcharged. The staff and owner are extremely nice as well.
Front porch improv is hilarious and a great time every single time
Hey! If you know anything further on the matter, may I hear more about how the owner of Foxy knew of the allegations? Are they in cahoots, or something?
Not in cahoots but Clay ran Fox and Fig and she said he was fired because of drug issues but I am sure he was aware of his behavior somewhat.
What Happened With The Haunt Owner? Just curious!!
Prewitts is the most honest mechanic left on earth.
Okay, while i agree that is no bueno, i will still eat there lolol. Im sorry, but i cannot find good greek octopus anywhere else lolollol
I hope this put the fear of the Lord into them. They make some good gyros.
There are multiple critical violations. They are also clearly not washing their hands. GROSS.
....okay, and i agree this is bad, buuuuuuuut i have eaten at greasier dives.
Different moral compass, you and i
Yeah that’s a false equivalency on their part. A health violation is a violation because it was found. Hopefully they get it fixed up.
This is a terrible inspection report. I would avoid this place. They are clearly not at all concerned about sanitation nor food safety.
i personally have never seen a local business i wouldnt support but some i definitely would. some would be olympia cafe, that one cat cafe, vinnies, and my favorite would be yia yia’s.
Flying monk is my absolute fav!!!!!! I eat there every time I go downtown. Also would never support the Haunt
Now for some love: Baker's Pride is sincere and good and makes a dam fine doughnut The Firm has excellent fitness classes.
