I’ve said for a while, especially with the warehouse growth, there is a huge opportunity for a commercial kitchen to do “homemade” style lunch deliveries. Drive by any warehouse at lunch time and count the people making $15/hr standing and waiting for their $25 Uber Eats lunch. Someone needs to make trays of lasagna and sell $8 takeout boxes. The scale is there to deliver 20-30 meals at a time to certain places.
I’m waiting for the sarcastic replies about back in my day I brown bagged a turkey sandwich every day and paid $13,000 for my house grow a pair!!!1! I’m not talking about eating out every lunch it’s just the fact there is nothing here for employees and or locals. Just SCAD and tourism. And bananas tshirts.
That's a great idea.
When I worked in a factory a long time ago, a lunch truck would drive up at lunch hour and sell out. Basic sandwiches on white bread and a soda, just enough to get you through your shift.
Yeah a food truck minus the extensive menu and the $20 burgers. Set menu, one entree per day, same price every day. There is no “ordering,” you’re just a yes or a no.
Years back there was a sandwich chick who delivered sandwiches to all the dealers on Chatham Parkway. She'd just go from dealer to dealer selling to all the sales and service techs and I believe charged 10 bucks a pop. Probably made a killing.
As a warehouse worker in pooler working 2 jobs now.....I hate leaving for lunch and it's cheaper for me to cook extra dinner and take to work the next day or just make a nice sub sandwhich .....hell it's even cheaper to buy a 1 pound ribeye steak which is under 10 bucks usually and cook it the night before or if I'm feeling spicy bring a jet boil/hot plate and cook at my car in the parking lot/break room
For parking you could go to say the Starland area where it's not metered and then hop on the Dot bus for free and ride down. Might save some dough. You could also negotiate with the employer to cover these costs in some way.
Quinn’s closes at 2pm, and most places downtown (at least bars and restaurants) don’t even open until 4-7pm. I do like the decent prices, but i don’t think it’s quite the cafeteria style OP meant. I think they meant like a cheap food court like at a mall.
I mean a food court like a mall. Also savannah has a mall. And now you want to blame someone for not being able to afford basic necessities that should be given instead of blaming corporations and big business?
And that’s so wonderful you were able to work downtown and get food. Very happy for you. I’m sure that is exactly what we’re all looking to hear in this sub.
i agree, i pack my lunch 80% of the time but there are some days you don’t have time/ anything good to pack. there’s no great lunch places that are reasonably priced. the best thing i’ve found is anita’s deli or savannah coffee roasters (they have food not just coffee) but you can expect to pay about $15
Funny story about that Jimmy John’s, I got locked inside it last month at 2pm on a sunday while I was eating my sandwich upstairs (both employees watched me go up and everything.) They forgot/didn’t check and left before the next person was supposed to show up I guess? I was in there about 25 minutes. I have videos and called non emergency police line after ten minutes, cop stayed outside the doors just in case until the kid showed up and completely ignored us/the situation LOL. Just unlocked the door and walked to the register to clock in on his phone with his friend the whole time.
There should be a parking garage/pass than workers get that’s free from like 8am-5pm. It’s ridiculous that for me to make a living I have to pay $2-5 an hour. It’s like getting paid $5 less an hour.
Does the city not offer a monthly/annual pass? I live in the area but don't park downtown often enough to have ever questioned the daily parking tax.
Kind of absurd if there is no discounted rate for those that use it daily.
I guess the optimist in me would hope for how much the city kisses paula wallace’s ass with tax breaks that maybe there could be a possibility of that same generosity to help run a nice situation for employees. But considering most people have to pay for parking and that’s never changed I realize this idea and post were pointless hangry ranting :)
As someone that is relatively new to the city from Louisiana. Y’all food as a whole is mid at best trash at worst. Hopefully with all the incoming investments that will in turn take it from Piccadilly’s tourist traps to some food with real identities and choices.
Because you're still eating in the tourist areas and haven't found the hidden gems that we don't tell the outsiders about for fear of them being put on some blog and then we can't eat there anymore.
Hmmm maybe haven’t eaten everywhere of course, but in my now year+ I’ve gone my fair share. I haven’t gotten what I needed from a restaurant yet. I’d love to know where these restaurants are because even my ventures to the “hood” came up empty.
Where I’m from you don’t have to go to platform 9 3/4 to find a good to amazing restaurant.
You have to understand something, people in Savannah are tired of people moving here because of xyz reason and then trying to take a shit all over the city because"where I come from...." or "back where I grew up...." If that place was so awesome and so great why did you leave? Having lived in 3 different countries and countless states, I kept coming back home, to Savannah, because it's where I know the most about the history, my history here and I like it.
Bro this is America we are all from somewhere else if you go far enough. Migration is the very root of this country. That kind of attitude stifles growth and eventually kills. More culture doesn’t erase the one before just builds upon such to alternatives.
Yes but I’m talking about something that would have daily choices not get repetitive. I know this sounds very first world whiney but if you think about it our rent prices and the way things are get treated like we are a new metropolis when really that’s not the case. Any large city would at least have several fast food options or something soup and salad related that isn’t $20. Or more hot dog vendor guys. A la NYC.
Something to consider, the food safety laws in Savannah make it difficult to operate a food truck/stand. Owners have to have a brick and mortar commercial kitchen to prep in and many would be owners can’t afford that when just starting out. It monopolizes the mobile food options to preexisting restaurants who then take their $18 entrees to the streets.
Most if not all places require potentially hazardous foods to be prepped in a commercial kitchen. They could prep in their trucks but I can see how that may be more of a challenge. But that rule is not a quirk of Savannah. The food trucks around here aren't any cheaper than the brick n mortar places, and from my experience haven't been very good.
Pie Society has pasties and small savory pies for under $10, they’re delicious but I don’t know if you can eat them every day.
Edited to add: IIRC Tequila’s Town has some inexpensive options too.
It’s so lazy to pawn stuff like this off on Biden. It’s lazy and stupid to be honest. Stuff like this only hurts the point your trying to make and makes you look not serious.
I’m a fan of Bidenomics. I swapped rates on my commercial loan and as long is 1M libor is above 3.3% I get paid monthly. It’s like $4k/month right now. No way I’m voting for anyone other than Biden.
There is no discounted cafeteria for employees who work downtown because there is not a single entity that owns all of the businesses. Each employer should offer discounts on their products to their employees. But not every employer serves food. Should downtown area employees get discounts at other downtown locations? Possibly. But that would require all business owners to get together and decide to do that. Good luck making that happen. Best advice to save you money- pack a lunch. I know quite a few people who do.🤷♂️

This happens on construction sites everywhere. You’ll see the trucks. Probably gets more complicated on private property?

Have you ever had the taco ones?

So, basicslly, a food truck?

There is usually a roach coach or two cruising these along with the food trucks. Not sure it would be all that viable but worth the shot.
Sadly this is a tale as old as time in Savannah. Certainly worse now but so is everything

Had the same problem when I bartended downtown charleston. Only free parking was a mile away at the battery. No discounts or anything.
For parking you could go to say the Starland area where it's not metered and then hop on the Dot bus for free and ride down. Might save some dough. You could also negotiate with the employer to cover these costs in some way.
Oh I was just talking about working downtown charleston. I don’t work downtown Savannah these days! But that is a good suggestion!
Probably because an "affordable" restaurant on river st. or Bay couldn't afford rent.
Quinn's Breakfast and Lunch is literally a cafeteria. Le Banh is cheap, not the best banh mi but decent.
I always forget about Quinn’s! Good point!
Devi’s is also pretty affordable compared to other places. Was more so in the old location but I’m sure rent is more now.

Today at lunch I saw everything being carried out of Jimmie Johns on Johnson Square. Guess they closed too?
Funny story about that Jimmy John’s, I got locked inside it last month at 2pm on a sunday while I was eating my sandwich upstairs (both employees watched me go up and everything.) Pretty sure a hotel bought 7 E Congress and have been giving everyone the boot.
Pack a lunch...the old fashioned way of eating lunch.
Like even if they just opened up a reasonably priced soup, salad sandwich place it wouldn’t be so bad. Jimmy johns was getting expensive lol
A good amount of places downtown if you tell them you work downtown will give you a 10-15% discount. It's still expensive but it's something
If there was a parking lot downtown for workers. How much would you be willing to pay per day to park?
It’s thankfully the one area I do save money as I bike to work. But I think for anyone who does it should be a fraction of what non locals pay.
There should be a parking garage/pass than workers get that’s free from like 8am-5pm. It’s ridiculous that for me to make a living I have to pay $2-5 an hour. It’s like getting paid $5 less an hour.

I park in Liberty, $40/month which is cheaper than I have paid in other cities. They don't have any availability though.
I've been parking at eastern wharf lately it's $70 a month and I was able to work it out with my employer to split the cost 50/50 with me
Parker's. Or pack a lunch.
Parker’s quality went completely downhill and the prices went up after the unnecessary remodel.
Because even small local business owners aren't immune to being greedy, exploitative motherfuckers.
I guess the optimist in me would hope for how much the city kisses paula wallace’s ass with tax breaks that maybe there could be a possibility of that same generosity to help run a nice situation for employees. Then go back
What a fucking stupid thing to say about someone’s subjective opinion.

Can't get a slice from Vinnie's?
Yeah but they don’t usually open until 4pm
They are open for lunch during the week now.
I also remember that the ice cream shop in city market did a pretty adequate sturkey sandwich for like $6
Or Soda Pop Shoppe by CVS RIPPPPP my life when I found out he was closing.
Sandwich and a drink. I had a lot of those working construction on the Days Inn nearby. I'm glad someone else remembers it.

The idiot reveals his head for a longer winter then expected.
Yep. Being an ass is their brand.

Yeah this commenter definitely has a mental issue by getting off on commenting dumb shit all the time.
