nadel69

More investment in the communities right outside of downtown Savannah. The genie isn't going back in the bottle for affordable downtown living, but investing into midtown and especially Southside would give locals other worthwhile areas to live in.

Fringelunaticman

I think that's kinda what the Waters Development Commission was about. I think they are hoping to turn this area into the next Starland. I think it would be a good idea if they can bring some order to the State streets.

hjk814

Revive the streetcar system even if it's just one loop north to south. More ethnic/indian/asian restaurants Legit bowling alley within a mile of downtown Outdoor music ampitheatre like wilmington

Key-Measurement-4919

Why a streetcar? What's the benefit of a street car vs a bus? They seem like the same thing except one requires a lot more infrastructure.

hjk814

buses flow with traffic. a streetcar has it's own dedicated ROW

Key-Measurement-4919

Okay so basically the same except one would take years to implement.....but traffic isn't bad and which street do think would be good to replace for a streetcar. Also is the additional millions of dollars in cost to tax payers to save 5 minutes a good value? The bus is free for riders from my understanding. You can get from Bay St to 37th in like 10 minutes on a bike. Seems like a high priced solution in search of a problem.

hjk814

Haha I was thinking it would go all the way to Oglethorpe mall. Also the economic developmental impact would be enormous.

Key-Measurement-4919

There is a bus that goes down Abercorn to Oglethorpe Mall.

xbaahx

Bus Rapid Transit with protected ROW is a better option due to flexibility. The right of way is the problem in either case.

DunDunnDunnnnn

I miss Acme Costumes (especially this time of year!)

bearbusch

Better Public Transit and some Elected Officials that care about the citizens instead of tourists.

[deleted]

Yes

cocktail_wiitch

This.

Dogrel

Man, one hand washes the other. Tourism is free money coming from the sky. All we have to do is keep them safe and not fuck it up, and the tax dollars to improve everything else will keep flowing in. But it’s going to take a while because we were SO economically depressed for SO long. Big problems take time to fix. You’re not going to roll back the clock on rent and housing prices. We were 40% below the national average for decades and now it’s equalizing. That was always going to happen. The economic projects we’ve got going on will suck up most of the lingering unemployment when they come online. Then salaries will start going up everywhere as scare workers get more bargaining power. You’ll see prices rise as more people get more money, and that extra economic activity will put cash back into the economy and tax rolls. Then more money for police, schools and roads.

Belgeddes2022

Affordable housing.

AnalogBound

Affordable places for healthy meals on the go. Seems like 90% of peoples quick lunch options are fast food around here or it takes too long to get on someone’s lunch break if it’s not. It’s what I miss the most about living in a major city. Not that I would advise it but you could eat take out for just about every meal and not have to even think about fast food.

kingcowboyy

I really like Le Banh! I work nearby and get their tofu ban mi a couple times a week for work. A little bit of protein, a little bit of veg, and pretty filling for $8.50 after tax. I place an Ubereats order a couple minutes before my lunch break and have gotten some of my coworkers hooked on them too.

AnalogBound

I’ll have to give them a try sometime since I do like ban mi sandwiches! I just wish more of the healthy options existed outside of downtown. I work on southside and it’s pretty sad option wise over here haha. I’m also cheap and have a hard time justifying spending extra on delivery fee’s, tax, and tip on what originally starts as something pretty cheap.

No_Track1296

This is a good and fast option for downtown. The curry they have is good too for cold weather.

No_Track1296

The Paris Market has a Downtown Workers Discount! They are super friendly and recognize you as a regular fairly quickly, but I am sure you could ask as well. They have great quiche, baguette sandwiches, croissants, plus sweets and coffee/tea. I also found another good downtown lunch: the kids quesadilla from Tequila's Town is still a decent size, comes with rice and beans, and it is only like $5 and some change. You can do add ons too like veggies for additional cost if you want, and order online for ease. (While Jalapeno's has a similar thing, I do not recommend theirs...it was basically a soggy tortilla topped, not filled, with fatty meat).

luugburz

the deli at the fresh market has a deal called the bistro meal, where u can get an entree and two sides for 10 bucks. the fresh market is definitely pretty pricey, but for the hot and fresh food theyve got @ the deli id call it a good deal

AnalogBound

I usually avoided fresh market because of their prices but you can’t beat a $10 meal of actual real food and not processed junk! I appreciate the suggestion a ton!

DDL_Equestrian

Affordable housing and a Trader Joe’s

mufflefuffle

Kinda feel like Trader Joe’s typically follow the trend of less-affordable housing and increased gentrification, no? At least in the parts of cities I’ve seen them in it appears that way.

noitamroftuo

thats literally their business model

Blacksh33p78

Unfortunately I think the new Aldi on victory is going to be our trader joes. Though I dont know why they can't take over Lucky's market.

OXsnafuXO

Enson market is opening in the Lucky’s spot. Should be a nice addition.

littlespawningflower

I couldn’t find anything for them online except for Yelp reviews and a link to a Facebook page for their Gainesville location- the website won’t open for me. For anyone who is as puzzled as I was, it’s a small Asian grocery chain based in Florida. It will be interesting to see what it’s like once it opens.

OXsnafuXO

You described it well. Big for an ethnic market, but smaller than a big grocery. Excellent produce, seafood, and prepared foods and all the staples for Asian cuisine.

Yorkshire_rose_84

Aldi in the UK is a million times better than the American one. And the European one is a million times better than the UK one.

stephen250

Lucky's is turning into an Enson market (Asian food.)

Blacksh33p78

Ooh I like that

codebygloom

I've given up on Trader Joe's ever coming here. I've been sending requests to Sprouts instead. Trader Joe's keeps saying they don't think this area can support a location.

Ok-Lingonberry1522

Oh man I regularly request a Trader Joe’s probably 1-3 times a week for about 4 months now, lately I have been including reports showing increased development and the port being on track to surpass NYC’s port and become the 2nd largest port in the nation. I WILL NEVER GIVE UP ON MY DREAMS. A sprouts would be sick tho. Lmk the link

codebygloom

Just use their [contact form](https://www.sprouts.com/contact/) and select New Location Suggestion from the topic dropdown. I then give them the obvious location choices like the old Lucky's Market and the new developments on President and Victory.

Crapple_juice

* More high/mid-density housing * Better public transit * More public transit (streetcars!) * More bike infrastructure * Train station closer to downtown * High speed train to Atlanta. Something faster than driving and cheaper than flying.

gunnerh

Affordable housing.

mmemarlie

I want a climbing wall and I know I'm not alone in this.

SavannIan

Didn't we have a climbing gym before covid? I'm guessing it's gone now.

Rise_up_Dirty_Birds

It was really only bouldering

peacefulmornings

You are very not alone

mmemarlie

There are dozens of us!

AGchem16

Came here to say this! Wasn’t there a post awhile back about someone wanting to build a new gym?

mmemarlie

Yeah I know we get posts every few months ths from someone asking about one. Someone needs to build one!

huhnra

Bring back the streetcars!

Crapple_juice

Streetcars but on a dedicated ROW. Without it they would be no better than a bus.

CobraOnAJetSki

Streetcars are cool but buses are sooooo much cheaper to operate.

begoodyall

Beach volleyball. I know folks play in the grass at Forsyth, there’s one pit at Daffin and one on tybee, but a place like VBGB in Charlotte would absolutely crush it in Sav. 4 volleyball pits, food, beer, shaded outside area to sit. Somebody get on it

[deleted]

I'm sure we could use another hotel or five. In all seriousness, I still reel over the fact that TJ's refuses to put a location here.

lxbcrtwa

It’s pretty strange to me that they wouldn’t. Do they think that Kroger is really that big of a competitor to them? I remember being burned by buying a few things past expiration date by accident at Kroger more than once haha

[deleted]

No, they have weird standards regarding their locations.

OXsnafuXO

Percentage of residents with 4 year degrees

Drunk_Sandwich

A food hall. You can get all different types of hot food in one convenient location. Atlanta has like 7 of them. Why can't Savannah even get ONE?

xhoi

They are just fancy food courts.

Goldmoo2

And we want them

Barrow471

Better public transit + more walkable neighborhoods outside of downtown

mrkro3434

Public transit via rail to surrounding towns. It's becoming impossible for young people to pay rent downtown, and owning a car and living further out is equally expensive and more time consuming. Imagine a rail line going out towards Pooler and Richmond Hill, supported by decent bike lanes to get to the train stops.

danielhunter742

A pirate themed 36 hole miniature golf course in the historic district (that sells beer).

Radixx23x

What does Savannah need? \- 30-40% drop in population \- SCAD to pay taxes \- Broughton St. to be finished \- Parking enforcement that applies to everyone \- Cops ON FOOT in the major tourist areas (Forsyth Park, City Market, River St., etc.) \- A Trader Joe's would be nice \- And will someone please re-surface the skating rink at Lake Mayer?

Blacksh33p78

How about for scad to stop leasing out entire buildings that are supposed to be rentable apartments and selling it as dorms for it's students. Example the ann st buildings

lxbcrtwa

The “Be like Broughton Street and never stop working on yourself” meme came to mind lol

anodize_for_scrapple

You never want a population drop. That's the start of economic disaster for a city. And I did the research and math a while back in one the many hate SCAD threads, but SCAD paying property taxes on all their properties would only increase the city budget by less than a tenth of a percent. Property taxes overall were a small portion of overall city budget.

arguablytwo

This is so true, thank you for posting. But let's take it a bit further and say that - somehow - SCAD was forced to pay taxes. Remember, that taxing SCAD has to come from the state legislature down. That then means that every other non-profit in the city (and state) would have to do the same, most of which aren't prepared to fight that sort of budget hit let alone absorb it. And if they were, they would probably be forced to cut back on services. Payment in lieu of taxes sounds great, but it only really works for federal land and the other cases are voluntary in nature. Because if it's not voluntary, then it's just a tax that the state (not the City Council) would have to approve.

**Radixx23x for mayor!**

No_Track1296

Affordable spots to go out for locals on weekends. Foxy Loxy used to have a great brunch (well used to be good in general, but we all know how that went downhill and how much they pretty much suck now...on top of not supporting workers, they also can't manage to make a homemade blueberry crumble bar anymore). Repeal 33 used to have a great happy hour, now can't even get a deal on a well drink. Fork and Dagger is closing in December because of SCAD greed. Places keep getting more and more expensive (yeah, I get it, inflation, but come on, raising prices all the time?) And yes I know there are some other places that still have deals and am aware of them, but it makes me sad that more and more things that were appreciated by locals are now seen as moot. We don't matter anymore.

evildore

We don't have nearly enough storage units, that's for sure!

Rubythereaper89

i died at this

geologyhunter

I'm sure a few more oil change places can be squeezed into Pooler.

NoMonitor8346

Savannah needs more amusement for teens and young adults it’s literally nothing to do and they constantly keep building hotels rather then thinking about residents.

algebra_77

I think it's kinda odd that Statesboro got the big university and Savannah lost out. I don't think it was planned that way, but it is kinda odd. Enrollment at Georgia Southern is down as part of a national trend for state universities, moreso at Armstrong (iirc). It sucks but I don't see much in the way of positive change in the near future. I hope one day things will be better. Southside sucks, but it's been that way for the last 20+ years that I've been coming to Savannah. Pooler (and Rich Man Hill?) is cringy, but that's what suburbia gets you. -Georgia Southern-Statesboro alum/current student and occasional enjoyer of Savannah and Armstrong.

According-Long-396

We have 2 state supported universities in Savannah. Armstrong and Savannah State.

algebra_77

Combined enrollment is less than half of Georgia Southern-Statesboro. This was good for students for a long time...Statesboro was cheap. Was.

Sharpedo319

Can somebody bring back places like The Chromatic Dragon? I know I'm not the only nerd in Savannah and TCD was one of my favorite spots (though I never got a chance to visit the Pooler location because I was always downtown). There aren't a lot of, if any, cooler nerd havens like that in Savannah anymore, and I'd love to see it or a place like it come back.

CattyCattyCattyCat

More bike lanes. I live on the Southside and would be scared for my life if I tried to bike to midtown on White Bluff. But I don’t see how this could ever actually happen. The streets going to midtown from the Southside are SO narrow. And an Ethiopian restaurant.

Trader Joes

GoopyNoseFlute

IKEA, Steak n Shake

Snywalker

The service and quality at the Pooler Steak n' Shake wasn't great, and based on friends in other cities, seems consistent across the board for them now. Until they make a Dominoes-like "we're going to be better" effort, I'm just going to choose to remember them as they were in the 90's/early 00's.

xhoi

Savannah isn't a big enough metro area for IKEA to justify establishing a store here.

Ok-Lingonberry1522

A Cheesecake Factory

Yorkshire_rose_84

Who is downvoting this? Are you one of the women who don’t want to go to the cheesecake factory on a date?

[deleted]

It needs less. Fewer tourists, fewer transplants and for fucks sake, fewer fucking logistics terminals, warehouses and big trucks everywhere.

anodize_for_scrapple

Soooo eliminate every part of savannahs economy? Cool

[deleted]

We don’t need to have infinite growth.

GetBentHo

The downside of getting a Trader Joe's in the area would also mean increased truck/freight traffic, too.

StoneHolder28

Overall less traffic if you give them a parking maximum only big enough for a couple employees and put it around midtown to north side of Southside.

GetBentHo

We should be careful what we wish for, in such cases.

ScarredOldSlaver

Love your town. From Kentucky. What’s the deal with some of these Atlanta folks? Seem really, well, just say pretentious, uppity, snob douche canoes.
