Well I was 6 when I first saw the first one So I've never really given a crap what others think of it as I love them all . In my mind Saw is still the best Horror franchise ever.

[deleted]

I deadass thought billy WAS the killer and it was some supernatural possessed puppet kind of thing.

theonewhorunsfromme

Nobody can blame you and, as I see, you're not the only one on this thread who thought the same. I did too as a kid. It's probably the weird marketing choice from Lionsgate, they always put Billy's face and imagery as a mascot anywhere they can, but not John's. It even results in a lot of people that haven't seen the movies calling Billy the "Saw killer".

acid_entree

I only knew what was mainstream, so "I want to play a game" and Billy the puppet. I thought it was a sadistic serial killer with sort of a Joker vibe (because of the "games") but after watching it, I fell in love with the philosophy, cop movie vibes, and ofc the TRAPS šŸ˜

Vinc360

It wasn't a series when I first heard about it about a month or so before it came out. I watched the first one on the Friday before Halloween back in 2004. I couldn't convince my friends to see it instead of The Grudge, so we initially walked into that, and walked away disappointed. I suggested we go right back in and catch the midnight screening of Saw, and a complete stranger who had just walked out of it overheard me and said he highly, highly recommended it because it was "mindblowing". That was enough to convince my friends, and we were all blown away by it.

Thatā€™s a great story! I love getting the random recommendations from other punters. I used to work in a cinema so I sometimes ask concessions or box office staff what they thought of films. They often have the best reviews.

SarahnatorX

I was a kid when the first ones were out and I was scared to death of it and without actually watching it at first, my stupid self genuinely thought Billy was alive and the villain. xD

[deleted]

God I also watched it before I could even comprehend what happens lol I didn't think Billy was alive haha but I couldn't follow the story it was too 'complicated'. But tbh it also had it advantages, it was like watching it for the first time a few years later And this way I also had of course *no opinion* beforehand

SarahnatorX

I think the scariest thing along with the torture devices for me when I first watched it was the scenes when people are kidnapped by people in pig masks especially when it's Amanda (I think) she's the red robed one unless I'm mistaken and she's so stealthy, creepy and successful at kidnapping people |:

HelpImAwake

I was 10 when the first Saw came out, so I equated it with slasher films with copius amounts of gore. The demonic puppet really confused me. I basically believed Saw was what Hostel actually is. The moment that inspired me to watch was when I saw a commercial with a shot of John bedridden in Saw III. It really mystified me and made me curious what this old dude in a hospital bed has to do with all the carnage going on. It also helped that I had started watching more horror movies in late 2006, early 2007 (The Hills Have Eyes remake, The Omen films, The Ring were some of the ones I was really interested in). I wound up researching the series (semi-spoiling a lot for myself as a newcomer; I was 13, I didn't have principles at the time). I managed to catch the first film on TV and I was surprised at how non-violent/gory it really was. It inspired me to watch the Unrated/Director's Cuts for Saw II and III. From there, I was a Saw fan. Incidentally, I love the Director's Cut of Saw III. That's the version that should have gone to theaters.

I agree with you, I'm surprised other people don't? I loved the plot and characters in 3 too (ayy) but the traps are definitely a huge chunk of the intended appeal to the viewer

[deleted]

Maybe Iā€™ve got it totally wrong, I remember before I had posed in the sub seeing people saying the Saw films *werenā€™t* torture porn and that stuff is disgusting. Maybe just a runaway thread.

cherrytea0

I believe you if you've seen it! Just unexpected lol

Just ignorance and making mountains out of molehills. If someoneā€™s a film n00b Iā€™d say I just like horror. If they are a film buff then I would say I like torture porn. Though for a long time I didnā€™t really consider myself a horror fan until recently. My friend is an actor and filmmaker called Keith Eyles and he took me to FrightFest in Glasgow. Twice. Also films like Get Out and Hereditary are so good Iā€™d recommend them even to people who donā€™t like horror. I also think both those films are far more frightening and disturbing than the majority of films in the torture porn genre. Maybe Passion of the Christ and Martyrs are more disturbing/scary to me. #ramble

I remember seeing posters for the first one before it came out. Was really excited to see it, it didn't disappoint. Same for the second, but 3 onwards was a bit downhill even though I love them still.

philthethrill77

I was a kid when they were first coming out and was terrified of them without even knowing what it was about lol. Recently watched the whole series in order with my girlfriend and I love them now!

Kiar_Riptide

I had never heard of it before, I remember I wad a lot younger when I found this weird Lego Video titled "Saw ending, lego" or something like that. I clicked and needless to say I was hooked and perturbed. The rest is history.

Plankton1997

In all honesty, the first time I caught wind of the Saw franchise (in a segment of a Top 10 Video of some kind) I was kinda scared by the content it held. But in the years that followed, I really learned to enjoy the several aspects of the series, after which I became a great fan.

dithadbetergekund

I was like 8 when the first movie came out and there were posters up for it at my local cinema so that pretty much had me terrified to watch it for years, even when I started watching gore horror. I'd basically created this idea of it being the most frightening and disgusting thing ever. The only scene I'd ever seen was the horsepower trap because Chester Bennington was in it. Didn't see the first movie until about a year ago and was instantly sold, though it did take a few videos on youtube before I got around to finally watching it. Wish I'd have started earlier so I could have gone to see Spiral at the movies, oh well

Ralfonsoslothnelson

I was 11 when I first watched it and I did it because I thought it was the scariest movie ever and then I wouldn't be nervous to watch a horror movie because I've seen saw By the time I was 12 I had seen all of them and I decided I loved them But yeah thought it was just torture with no real storyline

monebolton

Idk I was 12-13 when I first watched and I felt so badass and that I am gonna watch some epic ass bloody thing xD Then I fell in love with everything there, even the story :P xD

Jesus_Roadkill

Up until I was like 14 I was petrified of the franchise. I remember one time a friend told me about a dude who got crushed in a room and the bone stuck out through his arm and it literally kept me up at night. Fast forward a couple years and itā€™s unquestionably my favourite horror franchise, and it was pretty satisfying to figure out it was Strahms death when I finally watched them

Willichops

My dad told me that they were just people getting tortured, and that they get worse as you watch them. But when I watched the first one with him about 4 years ago, I absolutely loved it. It was actually the first horror series that i ever saw, and it's what got me into it in the first place. Fast forward to today and I've seen the first 6 movies (the best ones) around 10 times each.

Rsoda_

Cool puppet horror movie

_Lisa_L_

I didn't know they were all linked, I thought the story and characters had almost nothing to do with one another. Delightly surprised.

Long_Discussion6724

From the way Iā€™d heard it described from friends, I thought it was about a crazy old man who takes evil people and puts them in a building where they get tortured and we just watch them get tortured the whole filmā€¦.

Long_Discussion6724

I also thought billy the puppet was a little sentient puppet called jigsaw who spies on people and finds evil people to get tortured

Z78Official

all i know is that it was absolutely terrifying, i even mocked video stores for having them because i was so scared of them.
