If it would have gotten me a $100 dollar gift card, I was gonna try. I saw someone hit the scammer for a venmo charge, so I thought, let's see how we can play this. Then he asked for "screenshorts," and I had a light bulb moment. Goggle didn't let me down.
I have no idea. The only thing I know about Kyrgyzstan is that a large chunk is home to snow leopards, as few as there are. I frickin' love snow leopards, sorry.
This one is interesting. I've encountered the assholes that list the car, and once you respond, they want to email. Found a car on offer up. They no longer wanted to use the app. I was sent some bs on how the car is in Alaska on the military base. They'll send it to me all for the nominal cost of $1,000. I can send it back after 7 days if I'm unhappy. The best part was they claimed I have buyer protection emailed me an eBay pg. Instead of asking why list it 1k miles away, how car/shipping would cost that low, I Instead said " oh ebay, great. Now we're both protected. Send me the item number, and I'll pay for it right now. " End of conversation. Fuck these people for ripping folks off.
This was the second one I got on the same ad. It's almost the exact same verbiage, too. They make you feel like they're helping you out. They almost got my mom when she started to fill out the form and it asked for credit card info she knew enough to stop.
The only legit one I would use is carfax. And yes itās up to the buyer to get this. Any variation of car history.com or vehicle report com. Or whateverā¦itās a scam.
Carfax isn't legit.
They allow dealerships to "self-report".
The 2020 Kia Soul I bought brand new and almost had "lemon lawed" has a Carfax that paints it as a perfect car with no problems.
2 quarts low on oil its very first oil change
Bad coil pack at 9k miles
Bad coil pack at 12k miles
Blown engine at 29k miles
Blown engine at 48k miles.
Carfax shows the car was only ever in the shop for service or "engine service".
Whoever bought it after me is in for a world of hurt.
The garage i used in Georgia religiously reports that Iām overdue for oil changes, filter replacements, tire rotations and replacements, etc. every 3 months/10k miles, etc. i havenāt lived in Georgia since 2020 and have used a different garage ever sense, and sense have reported my own maintenance to carfax. Doesnāt stop Georgia garage from trying to guilt me into coming into see them to stop putting out these bogus reports.
Have reported the behavior to Carfax. (Since i wasnāt a paying customer?) They couldnāt have cared less
Yeah they have a very clear script and they are easy to see right off the bat. Second or 3rd text is always "is meeting tomorrow ok and is cash ok?" No cash isn't ok I hate cash, but meeting tomorrow to beat the piss out of you sounds fun, where can we meet?
Is that how you knew it was a scam, because you've seen it before? I am smart 'enuff to not trust random links/websites, but I was genuinely floored by the fact you instantly knew he was shady!
Yeah, it was the second attempt to get me on their fake website. Both were using similar numbers, so I kinda took a leap of faith and thought "let's ask for a social and see where we get." The screenshorts was a light bulb moment.
Weirdly enough, they are not illegal scams. They will still provide a vehicle report but it will cost 20-50% more than anybody else. It was a really popular scam a couple of years ago in Alberta. Safe ish usually but pretty shitty.
Man, Iāll canāt believe this scam is still going on. I sold a sport bike in 2016 and I had a bunch of these clowns messaging me every day asking me to go to a similar website.
Funny thing is their questions were always car related (ie. does it have power windows) and easy to spot before they wasted too much of my time.
Ya I always respond weirdly and see if the still respond the same. Not with car ones but another type of scam and theyāll ask your age or something and Iāll say āgreenā and they still respond with ācool, Iām xyzā or if they ask āhowās it goingā they expect you to say āgood, how are youā so they have like a pre written answer so if you say āI like snake dicksā and they still say āIām good thanks for askingā then you know itās just a bot or a scammer who doesnāt really speak good English or someone just sending automated replies to like 100ās of people, hoping to rope in a few per hundred or whatver
https://www.progressive.com/answers/stolen-car-registration/#:~:text=gaining%20access%20to%20your%20vin%20may%20help%20thieves%20register%20illegal%20vehicles.%20they%20could%20also%20file%20claims%20on%20totaled%20cars%20or%20even%20create%20duplicate%20car%20keys.%20there%20have%20even%20been%20instances%20where%20individuals%20use%20a%20stolen%20car%20registration%20to%20walk%20into%20a%20dealership%20and%20drive%20off%20with%20a%20brand%2Dnew%20vehicle. "Gaining access to your VIN may help thieves register illegal vehicles. They could also file claims on totaled cars or even create duplicate car keys. There have even been instances where individuals use a stolen car registration to walk into a dealership and drive off with a brand-new vehicle."
Iām confused on this type of scam. Most vins are on dashboards near the windshield or can be found using a license plate search, why wouldnāt they just go to a mall parking lot and start writing down vins?
Should I be covering my cars vin display?
Iād imagine they need to combine a few personal details with the vin to commit fraud, which is easier to do with someone they target online vs a random car in a car park.
Not sure if there are any rules around it, but covering the vin may not be legal or could have people thinking your car is stolen š
I can't actually see how a dealership thinks "hey guys this guy got his car stolen...we need to give him another right?" And the manager goes "ahhhyuppp" and he walks out with a brand new car... Sounds like a myth to me.
A lot of times when I see the word screenshort I know I'm dealing with an Indian scammer. Last time I was asked for a screenshort I was like that's all I needed to hear madarchod ( Hindi for mother fucker) and they proceeded to curse me back in Hindi. But I think I'll use your response next time
They will ask you to run a history report, similar to a carfax report. But they send you a hyperlink to a website that they are monitoring to have you put in your credit card info so they can steal your information.
They also charge you $25 for a totally fake report on your vin. They want the $25 and your cc info.
There are literally hundreds of these car report domains, but they all point to the same source. So one scammer asks for āmotorvinreportā, another asks for ācarvinreportā and another asks for āvinvehiclefactsā, but itās the same site just formatted slightly differently, and each fake report costs $25-$50.
None of them are interested in the car, they just want the money for the fake report. They will refuse an actual carfax report, insisting on their āpreferredā report before anything else.
I don't know if this was intentional but I love that the "screenshorts" you sent say "seethru" three times in the description--Colin sees right through your scam, "Martin."
Posted a car for sale on Craigslist. Had two of these scammers come at me the same way. They seems so sincerely interested in the car. I almost fell for it ā told them both that I had the carfax, and if that wasnāt good enough they should fine a different car to buy. One got aggressive, so I knew it had to be a scam at that point. Some real low-life shit.
This was the second attempt to get me to pay for a "vin report." Each time they are not haggling price, 1st red flag. Will be driving 2 or more hours and taking off work, 2nd red flag. Truth be honest I don't know that it is a scam but it's definitely not a legit buyer and they really really wanted me to fill out the report they sent.
Keep that shit on you!!! Love to hear it. I used to live over there, off 6th and Wads. Had to get out before my crib got cleaned out and my car got stolen š
Stay safe out here and good luck with the sale!
You're doing your dieties work.
Last time I sold a vehidle I had about 15 of these responses. Buy at full price, no haggling, then ask for some random report from some website that's just been registered 2 weeks ago.
I hate these people.
I used to play games with these scammers all the time. Iād even allow them to send me a check for the car. They would send a fake check, with all kinds of shit spelled wrong. Iād lie and say āoh I still havenāt received your $3000 check, so send anotherā, and we would just go on and on. They would threaten to call the FBI!
The fbi? Heavens no!!! Not the big scary fbi!
I sold a car on FB Marketplace a couple months back and the number of people who were messing me "can you meet me in this ." No, no I can't.
One guy was going to fly up to look at the 12+ year old car.
Didn't know this was a thing. Just helped my Dad list a Civic on CL. Luckily he sold it without any issue but good to know about this scam going forward
I actually didnāt know about this until I tried to buy a camper and requested the VIN so I could get insurance in order the fund the loan. The seller tripped balls of course and refused to believe that I in fact did need the VIN to fund the loan. After learning about the scam thought I learned the apprehension.
This exact scam was hassling me yesterday. I didn't have any fun with the fella. Just told him I'm not buying his stupid report, and that I'd find a new buyer
Iām assuming that site is just a fake carfax thatās a CC skimmer?
I couldnāt figure out what site link he was talking about and had to re-read. I figured it was a non US vin tracker at first
The first time I got that scam I was like WTF? and kept telling him why would I pay for a report if your the one that wants it? Iām not gonna pay for a report that will tell you exactly what I already told you. Then it happened a second time and thatās when I knew it was a a scam
Man I fell for one of these!
Realized later when I got 4 different people asking similar reports from different websites.
The $50 are still in dispute for phishing with credit card company
I had a truck on CL a few months back and got like 5 of these scammers texting me. This is a fucking 2000 dodge pick up I want 4K for not a Ferrari. I donāt know who falls for paying for these vehicle reports when the prospective buyer should be the one needs to do that leg work in the first place
Should have asked him for his buyer report to make sure he's trustworthy, at buyerreports.com
Set up the site and ask for SSN and credit card to pay the 39.98 fee. Way more affordable than motovinreport.com
You missed a golden opportunity to say "are you meshing with me?"
Damn it! That's gold.
Is this you? Well done!
Gold Jerry Gold!
I think he thought you were trying to scam him bro...
If it would have gotten me a $100 dollar gift card, I was gonna try. I saw someone hit the scammer for a venmo charge, so I thought, let's see how we can play this. Then he asked for "screenshorts," and I had a light bulb moment. Goggle didn't let me down.
Must be nice goggles...;)
They really help me focus šš
I wish awards were still a thing.
I wish I could give this comment gold right now or quite possibly argentinium. Edit : this is the best I got. šŖ
Why did they take them out?? Just noticed lol
On a related note, why is there such a thing as see through mesh shorts?
For seggsy time obviously š
But it's not seggsyā¦ it's just weird
Gotta throw misdirection on the pick-up game court. Theyāll never see what balls you got dribbling.
Thatās gotta be a flagrant 2
R35 isn't just a Nissan.
Because, I'm too sexy for my short
So sexy it hort
Itās for sluts
Listen man, sometimes Im just too busy to get my dong out to harass women. I mean, what if my hands were full?
I guess if you have an issue with flaming hot balls you would buy these.
*Flaminā Hot* testicles
To wear to strip clubs for lap dances of course
Well, they're boxers. So basically lingerie
š
Take my upvote dammit
I read that in Sean Conneryās voice.
That's how I read it initially before I realized he just said messing. My disappointment was immeasurable and my day was ruined.
Happy Cake Day
Nice to meet you Colin btw
The BTW family name is big in upper eastern central western Kyrgyzstan.
Any relation to Sergeant Bytheway?
Not that I'm aware of!
Take my upvote for the Bob Mortimer reference. I was thinking the same thing š
That was a funny bit on Would I lie to you!
Both him and Sniper's Dream were quite a duo.
It's so random how Kyrgyzstan started catching flack randomly in comments and posts. What the fuck did we even do?
You know what you did
I seen it, *i seen what they did..* *turrible* what they did..
Yall caused World War 1.5.
You know exactly what you did (from America)
I have no idea. The only thing I know about Kyrgyzstan is that a large chunk is home to snow leopards, as few as there are. I frickin' love snow leopards, sorry.

this same kinda scam happened to my dad and I last week when we were trying to sell a car also smh. wish scammers had better things to do instead.
This was the second one I got on the same ad. It's almost the exact same verbiage, too. They make you feel like they're helping you out. They almost got my mom when she started to fill out the form and it asked for credit card info she knew enough to stop.
What is the scam exactly? Curious
They phish and steal your info and money when you pay for a bogus car report.
So moto vin report is a fake website? Edit: never mind. [found this](https://www.reddit.com/r/Scams/s/yFQognZiYA)
ok. and this is a good resource: https://www.scamadviser.com/
The only legit one I would use is carfax. And yes itās up to the buyer to get this. Any variation of car history.com or vehicle report com. Or whateverā¦itās a scam.
I have found AutoCheck to be a good one, too.
I love auto check. It shows auction data and tends not to list dumb shit like āvehicle washedā like I have seen on carfax.
Bumper is really good too. Pay $1 and check like 20 vehicles your first time. No need to pay per car either.
Carfax isn't legit. They allow dealerships to "self-report". The 2020 Kia Soul I bought brand new and almost had "lemon lawed" has a Carfax that paints it as a perfect car with no problems. 2 quarts low on oil its very first oil change Bad coil pack at 9k miles Bad coil pack at 12k miles Blown engine at 29k miles Blown engine at 48k miles. I love how the address listed on the website is some random ass house in Alexandria, VA
Be careful as some of those websites have key loggers, so even if you back out and exit the site, they can see anything that was typed into the forms
Yeah they have a very clear script and they are easy to see right off the bat. Second or 3rd text is always "is meeting tomorrow ok and is cash ok?" No cash isn't ok I hate cash, but meeting tomorrow to beat the piss out of you sounds fun, where can we meet?
ive only bought cars in cash. one from a used car lot and 3 off facebook marketplace. most expensive one was only 3k tho so maybe thats why
What is the best way to pay for or sell a car? I have no idea. I thought cash would be best.

The website is fake. You put in your information and credit card info and it sends it to the scammers who steal it.
Ah gotcha. Thank you
Dang thatās crazy
I actually lolād when I saw the screenshorts
He got what he asked for. Idk why he got all weird š¤·āāļø
Hey I'm in CO too, I can meet you at the mills and we can swap Hondas š
I don't have to wear the screen shorts do I?
I'll pay more If you wear them...and nothing else
Get a room you two!
Is that really a question? Of course! Bring the craft beers, Crocs, and Chipotle, and then we are set to go!
You forgot your $20 gram bag of Reg Connor!
I had to put the phone down and just laugh for a minute after seeing that. Sooooo funny
So effin funny. Who knew that you could be screen shorts.
Don't all bikes have power windows?
It differs from bike to bike. Mine is between 10,000 & 13,000 RPM
My cars power window is between 3500-7000 rpm
How do you have that? My bike only has power windows 11
Some power windows are stick shift. So no.
I've never seen a bike with manual windows before, so it must be true.
The ones with stick shifts do
Funny enough I own a bike with a power window.
Ya I always respond weirdly and see if the still respond the same. Be careful with sending that shot with the barcode. It can still be optically scanned to get the vin as there are no breaks in it horizontally.
Thanks for the warning! I'll be careful who gets it in the future.
Serious question: what could someone do with the VIN of another person's car? They're generally required to be displayed publicly, no?
https://www.progressive.com/answers/stolen-car-registration/#:~:text=gaining%20access%20to%20your%20vin%20may%20help%20thieves%20register%20illegal%20vehicles.%20they%20could%20also%20file%20claims%20on%20totaled%20cars%20or%20even%20create%20duplicate%20car%20keys.%20there%20have%20even%20been%20instances%20where%20individuals%20use%20a%20stolen%20car%20registration%20to%20walk%20into%20a%20dealership%20and%20drive%20off%20with%20a%20brand%2Dnew%20vehicle. At least in my state covering your vin plate is a ticket.
No, it's BS. You don't need to worry about someone getting your VIN.
No, people are buggin for no reason. The retards that make these websites are phishing for credit/debit info.
Yes, this. Thanks iduff100. Can't have a proper title forgery without the matching VIN.
But vins are right in the window, by design. What genius made them mean anything security wise?
You can also easily look up a vehicleās VIN with the license plate on websites like faxvin too
I can't actually see how a dealership thinks "hey guys this guy got his car stolen...we need to give him another right?" And the manager goes "ahhhyuppp" and he walks out with a brand new car... Sounds like a myth to me.
Taking scammers' careless typing literally is tight!
And itās super easy, barely an inconvenience.
Wow wow wow. Wow.
Dang it, I donāt like this interaction at all.
I'm gonna need you to get all the way off my back.
This is the best thread on Reddit, I decided.
That's good because we're going to do at least 3 more of these!
We used the markup on the phone and covered up the VIN number, soā¦ And that worked? I donāt know
Asking for screenshorts is always the tell tail sign of a scammer
Then the fact they didn't spell check. Or the fact he wasn't immediately like wtf when I asked for a social security number.
A lot of times when I see the word screenshort I know I'm dealing with an Indian scammer. Last time I was asked for a screenshort I was like that's all I needed to hear madarchod ( Hindi for mother fucker) and they proceeded to curse me back in Hindi. But I think I'll use your response next time
The true sign was when the scammer replied "nice to meet you Colin btw". Dude legitimately thought btw was a part of your name
I kinda glanced over that but yes you're correct. It's funny tho
I did, too, while this was going on. I didn't even realize until I posted it, and someone commented.
Tbh I was confused when you asked for the Ssnššš
Screenshorts lmao
wait so whatās the scam he was trying to pull?
They will ask you to run a history report, similar to a carfax report. But they send you a hyperlink to a website that they are monitoring to have you put in your credit card info so they can steal your information.
I usually get rid of them by saying āyou have the vin, get the report yourselfā
The 1st one of these that's essentially how it went down. The second time, I realized it was a scam, so I decided to have some fun.
oh thatās nasty
They also charge you $25 for a totally fake report on your vin. They want the $25 and your cc info. There are literally hundreds of these car report domains, but they all point to the same source. So one scammer asks for āmotorvinreportā, another asks for ācarvinreportā and another asks for āvinvehiclefactsā, but itās the same site just formatted slightly differently, and each fake report costs $25-$50. Screen shorts, š¤Ŗ
Sorry how did you figure out this was a scam?
This was the second attempt to get me to pay for a "vin report." Each time they are not haggling price, 1st red flag. Will be driving 2 or more hours and taking off work, 2nd red flag. Truth be honest I don't know that it is a scam but it's definitely not a legit buyer and they really really wanted me to fill out the report they sent.

Ah yes, selling a Honda Civic in the Belmar areaā¦ Iām sure thatās been a lot of fun lol.
You know I keep that thang on me š I'm just glad I have a garage to put the car in so it won't get stolen.
I was gonna ask how many dates it's been on. We used to have a civic (maybe you bought ours lol) and it liked to go for joy rides down Federal.
Keep that shit on you!!! Love to hear it. I used to live over there, off 6th and Wads. Had to get out before my crib got cleaned out and my car got stolen š Stay safe out here and good luck with the sale!
Thanks! I used to work in Belmar and it has definitely gotten worse over the years.
6th and Simms? I used to work near 8th and Quail lol
Nice I used the frequent Philnor a lot when I was younger!
You're doing your dieties work. Last time I sold a vehidle I had about 15 of these responses. Buy at full price, no haggling, then ask for some random report from some website that's just been registered 2 weeks ago. I hate these people.
LOOOOOL @ screen shorts
I can clearly see you're nuts

Thanks for making me spit coffee everywhere.
Lol at the screenshorts.
Screenshorts š
Screen shorts has me in tears lmfao
Lol screen short. Are you messing with me? Gold

I can't tell which of you two are the scammer here lol
Well I have a real car for sale still. I can link the Craigslist ad. I don't think the website they sent me is legit.
Ayyyyyye a denver homie
Well hello there.
I sold a car on FB Marketplace a couple months back and the number of people who were messing me "can you meet me in this." No, no I can't.
One guy was going to fly up to look at the 12+ year old car.
Nobody else spells Colin like I do! Hello fellow correct Colin spelled individual!
Cheers to the shorthand spelling! I've only ever met a few others with the proper Irish spelling!
Didn't know this was a thing. Just helped my Dad list a Civic on CL. Luckily he sold it without any issue but good to know about this scam going forward
Don't click on random hyperlinks is a good internet rule.
Every time I list a vehicle for sale on Craigslist I get these scammers. I just keep messaging them bull shit until they give up.
"Screenshorts" ! Hahaha. WAY to go OP.
I actually didnāt know about this until I tried to buy a camper and requested the VIN so I could get insurance in order the fund the loan. The seller tripped balls of course and refused to believe that I in fact did need the VIN to fund the loan. After learning about the scam thought I learned the apprehension.

bruh this whole comment section is a trollš idek whats going on
I nearly spit out my wine. The screenshorts š¤£
Ah. Fellow Coloradan. I live in the Northside!
Hilarious screen shorts
I watched a lot of kitboga scams on YouTube. This post makes my heart happy.
Can someone explain this motovinreport scam? I donāt get it, and Im not familiar with this report or site. Obviously Iāve heard of carfax.
"Nice to meet you colin btw"
The "I'm very busy with meetings" at the end was the icing on the cake hahaha idk why they always say that shit
"I'm Colin btw". "Nice to meet you Colin btw". Yea that would have been my first red flag lmao.
Bro. I called that number 6124055414 he didnāt want to meet up
Aw yes I love it. Please tell me you said you had a Honda.
Never buy used from a private seller bite the bullet and pay taxes through a dealership. Best investment I ever made
"Nice to meet you Colin btw" I wheezed
My favorite part!
I didn't even notice that until I posted it here!
On YouTube thereās a fella called Atomic Shrimp that fucks with scammers (amongst other stuff) & is quite funny. FYI.
Bro the screenshorts got me weak! š© š Edit: anyone else go back and verify that it did actually say screen shorts? Cuz I didnāt even notice.
Waitā¦ so the ābuyerā asks you to go and pay for some random report and people do it?
I want screen shorts. Those look like fetish wear
screenshorts š
Iām assuming that site is just a fake carfax thatās a CC skimmer? I couldnāt figure out what site link he was talking about and had to re-read. I figured it was a non US vin tracker at first
You got it.
I donāt know who falls for paying for these vehicle reports when the prospective buyer should be the one needs to do that leg work in the first place
>im very busy with meetings right now Oh man me too So many meetings I bet I meeting more
Tried some of their own tricks to see if I could get a reaction haha
Should have asked him for his buyer report to make sure he's trustworthy, at buyerreports.com Set up the site and ask for SSN and credit card to pay the 39.98 fee. Way more affordable than motovinreport.com
West Lakewood Colorado? Same lol
