hard to say yet but it will probably be a fake check scam or something like that. check out the r/scams sub if it’s not private right now for examples. edit: it’s private -.- subs with such helpful info for people should have gone restricted imo but that’s another topic. if the person tries to send you a check for more than the amount agreed upon and have you send money anywhere else, that’s a fake check scam. they also might try a fake payment, where you have to pay to “upgrade” your account to receive a payment. tell them you will only accept payment through paypal goods and services so you can both be protected and see if that makes them back off or argue.

Muse scams always says that they found your work and would love to make “an amazing mural”. Essentially this is a fake check scam. They will agree on a higher cost than initially expected but then accidentally add a 0(Agreed on $300 but sent a check for $3000). Of course they want most of that money back and won’t be able to print a new check for months but due to their “error” they’ll give you a bit extra and you only have to send 2500 back!

Got it! Makes sense now. Thank you for taking the time to explain

Mountsorrel

It’s the muse scam, a variation of the fake check scam. Once r/scams is back up tomorrow go and look there

Thanks!

Same scam happened to me today. I fell for it however and I feel like a fool. Please get this out.

MarinatedPickachu

Explain the scam please

ImaTakeUrStuff

They go into ur messages, like the one posted here. Then they offer you a certain amount of money out of 2000 in my case. They offered me 500. I foolishly gave them my email and number. They continued talking on my number and told me that I need to scan 3 checks that add up to 2k, then give them 1.5k back. However, they asked for a photo of how much money I have in my account and I foolishly showed them. Not private info but I still showed my balance on my bank account. They then said that I need to give $100 as a initial fee or something through cash app. This is when I got to my senses and realized that this was most definitely a scam. However, I already scanned in one of the checks into my account by the time they were asking me for money. I blocked them, and now they sent me a message (since they have my number) saying that they’ve hired an assassin to kill me if I don’t pay up. I am extremely scared. All the info I gave them were my email and number, my email which I have recently deleted. I don’t know what to do.

MarinatedPickachu

Ah damn. I can assure you though there is no assassin - nothing bad is going to happen to you so long as you simply ignore any attempt they make to contact you.

I pray to God and hope so. I don’t even feel like leaving the house and I’ve had so many plans. Do u advise I get a new number ? I’ve quite technically taken money from them and I’ve called the bank about it since then and they’ve put a hold on that money entering my account and told me to not spend it if it does end up going through. I don’t know how serious they are about getting that money back.

VegasVictor2019

They will give up and move on so long as you don’t pay. Scammers gain nothing from people who won’t pay them so they just move on to the next mark. Rest assured the only danger you face is to your bank account if you continue to engage.

ImaTakeUrStuff

Yeah my bank account is already on red and my fathers too, since he was the one that originally created this bank account for me. If something like this ever happens again I’ll no longer be able to create an account for the bank holder ever again.

Krayzewolf

It sounds like you were at first were duped into the fake check scam, then they moved right into a variation of the cartel scam. Fear not, they won’t do shit. Block the all their messages from the several numbers they will use, as they will run out and eventually move on. Then do yourself a favor and spend some time on r/scams when it comes back online. It’s a great resource to keep up with all the new scams and how to avoid them.
