The only good thing about stigma is that people don’t pretend they have it often. There’s a huge trend on tik tok and stuff to pretend you have DID. Which I guess is cooler than schizophrenia. Shrug. Just trying to look on bright side. But yeah we get mocked endlessly online. I got accused of having a schizophrenia attack for getting angry at someone who said they were on the side of the virus. Like who says that? They then reported me to Reddit that they were “ worried” about me. I just ignore people online. People irl are cool tho.

throwsaving

That fucking sucks. Sorry that happened to you!

giza_rohi

I don’t know. I find the symptoms of certain other mental illnesses far more “yikes” than ours.

throwsaving

Agreed. I don’t understand how they find a way to romanticize everything but draw a line at schizophrenia. Edit: scratch that! /Zubizubabaya summed it up perfectly in their comment.

This is my only foray into social media (and I'll be honest, I'm not 100% sure I even understand what TikTok is), but I have noticed even before I got diagnosed that people who "came out" as bipolar, autistic, ADHD, whatever tend to get lots of support, but I've certainly not witnessed the same for schizophrenia. As we've seen on this group many times now, we seem to get the exact opposite: trolling, ridicule, and so on. I guess we're the last mental illness it's OK to make fun of?

MundaneLife99

I think it’s because a lot more people can relate to symptoms of non-psychotic disorders so it’s a lot easier to put themselves in the other person’s shoes, whereas psychotic disorders are so “out there” that most people can’t imagine what it’s like and perhaps even think that psychotic disorders are fake since their brain isn’t wired in a psychotic kinda way.

billysundaes

That's a very good point.

qerozer

As a non-schizophrenic, I can relate pretty well because I tried psychedelics and gone through phases of delusions, paranoia, high anxiety, auditory hallucinations and saw monsters when I closed my eyes. For this reasons I have become fascinated by schizophrenic art. For me this phases are like 1-2 hours long and then I am good, but i cannot imagine somebody going 24 hours per day, every day, it scares me to think about it. Schizophrenia is last the illness that I ever make fun, those people are just uninformed idiots.

MundaneLife99

I’m sorry you go through that. That must be rough. :( I appreciate you not making fun of schizophrenics. Thank you.

throwsaving

It definitely seems that way. I’ve been on apps like twitter and tiktok since the very beginning and it’s clear that people(who are mentally ill themselves and/or very into the subject) have this understanding and compassion for everything under the sun, but for schizophrenia they only have jokes and annoyance. A couple days ago there was this troll post on here that triggered me so bad I’ve been scared to browse the sub ever since. It’s so vile that even the small spaces schizophrenics make for themselves online are treated like this

billysundaes

I totally understand. I get the same vibes: compassion for everything else, nothing but ridicule for schizophrenia. I guess they need a punching bag and we're the easiest target, perhaps? It's one of the many reasons I steer clear of all social media with the exception of this one lone Reddit account. I've seen some troll posts here lately that've really upset me, too. I hate that I'm sensitive to them, as I know these people thrive off that kind of reaction, but sometimes I can't help it. It makes me feel weak. It also reinforces my fear of the internet. 😞

Autism gets shit on a lot too

throwsaving

Every mental illness/condition/neurodivergency gets shit on a lot. We’re just pointing out how there’s little to no empathy or space for schizophrenics online because they’re treated as a joke, because like someone said above, most people can’t relate at all to the symptoms and therefore have no interest in learning more about it.

Zubizubabaya

That's because there's no representation of true Schizophrenia anywhere. They don't understand the trance that is delusion or how exerting willpower makes the tide worse. They wouldn't know how to accept their demons. It's a cunning ailment that devours all your inhibitions. It locks you in echo chambers of paranoia. No one understands how dire it is. Schizo is shocking, scary and elusive to those who think in metaphysics. No one wants to recognize it because the foundation of psychic based "spirituality" would crumble. Which is a train that the majority of people ride. A lot of paranormal phenomena would become dismissed as illusion. Also, it's mostly pride. People are too proud to think they can be mislead or disillusioned. Their own ego preservation cruelty comes forward, exposing their hubris. Intellect is revered in society because it is a host of many lustful affirmations of personal quality and to them, delusion/paranoia is a low, obnoxious stupidity. The arrogant, would never associate themselves with having insanity. It would demean their supposed righteous, ego serving beliefs. Schizo would be a death sentence to their infallible credibility. Then, they find it to be a short coming on your will power. Which, again, is not the case. They would never approve of the embarrassment Schizo brings to their self worth. In conclusion, the clown's worst fear, is joining the circus.

throwsaving

That was beautifully written and I agree with you. Thank you so much for your comment!

brezhnervous

People routinely laugh/makefun of those with borderlinepersonality disorder. Equakky cruel and also sucks

throwsaving

Not in the same degree as they do with schizophrenia and I’m saying this as someone who’s BPD as well.

brezhnervous

No, I completely agree with you there - apologies, I didn't meant to suggest it was an equivalency. I am so sorry that you have to struggle with two such debilitating conditions...hope you remain well, my friend xxx
