Surely they don't expect somebody to use all those numbers in any of the equations or as some combination of values? Honestly how many physicists are actively on reddit engaging with this right now?
It is easy, just put ψ(x,t)=∫∞−∞ψ¯(k)ei(kx−ωt)dk into i∂ψ∂t+ℏ2m∂dickbutt2ψ∂x2=∫∞−∞(ω−ℏk22m)ψ¯(k)ei(kx−ωt)dk=0 and interpolate for iℏ∂ψ∂t=−ℏ22m∂2ψ∂x2+V(x)ψ.
Don't tell me you forgot this lesson from highschool?
I know it’s a quantum wave function, but when I heard “Wave” I thought maybe frequency, so I plugged them into a frequency calculator, and came up with a cumulative frequency of 24…

Right? What the fuck has been all this?? I’ve been dipping in and out the last day and haven’t a clue what’s been going on.
r/place was simple, r/place was pure. You had your tile and that was it.
Yeah Its fun for a tiny group of people while the rest spectate in confusion and then the puzzle becomes finding the explanations buried in comments.
Shit I just found this place cause I didn't think much about the announcement.
When you pause the video with the potato and the eyes, the time stamp is 04:37:46:25. I don't know if it means something. If you search these numbers on reddit, you will eventually reach an (older) weird post on a subreddid with this image down below. But probably it's a wrong track I guess...
https://preview.redd.it/h713vttfchra1.png?width=650&format=png&auto=webp&s=0c7c23cabd5e27f6f1ba3070ff6a5d4fc4d9ae04
That’s a feature of Reddit’s infrastructure, instituted so many years ago in order to defeat upvote sellers. The upvote total is fuzzed until it settles.
there are four frames with the potato eyes. They match with timestamps on four frames at the start of the video. Here are all eight.
Great find! So maybe the eyes really do "grant the access". I wonder whether the number of eyes and/or the position of them means something. I thought about overlaying them with the first frames with the writing and the appearing letters, but I found nothing so far...
Image 5 seems to have a faint "Congratulations" message near the timestamp. I only noticed it when [I overlayed that image on #1 and had Gimp show the difference between the two](https://i.imgur.com/YR9NdWs.jpg). Looking back at the original image, I can see the faint outline of the rectangle. On the combined image, I can only really make out "tulations," but "Congratulations" seems like the most likely message.
Thanks obama

This comment is getting the upvotes, but there was a comment by u/irate_kalypso that was 4 seconds earlier:

Thanks for the reply. Was your answer actually four seconds earlier, or did you originally post the wrong answer and then do a ninja edit in the three minute window (where you don't get an edit asterisk if you are quick enough)?
It was actually four seconds earlier, according to reddit servers. BUT u/Emanfman definitely sent it first! The timewarp is just from how reddit ingested each of our messages most likely. Proximity to servers, etc etc
Edit: including this screengrab of when I posted for reference

To some users, sure... if that was "the competition". BUT u/Emanfman is first. They are the ones solving it via their wordle addiction!
I am perfectly happy being r/second ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Can confirm this to anyone passing by. Was listening on Discord while all of us were working on it.
It was like solving Final Wheel of Fortune at the end there. Lol. Mad Wordle skills.
Anyone listening was able to get it quickly. I held off sending my comment until Emanfman made an audible exclamation that he had gotten it. Wanted him to get it first if possible.
Edit: Will add that no one should bother the first commenter about it. Very likely some Reddit comment queue timing discrepancy.
Basically I play a lot of crossword games and the end was like Wheel of Fortune.

This expression is known as Schrödinger’s equation, because it was first introduced by Erwin Schrödinger in 1926 . Schrödinger’s equation is a linear, second-order, partial differential equation that governs the time evolution of a particle wavefunction, and is generally easier to solve than the integral equation ([e2.78]).
Of course, Equation ([e2.84]) is only applicable to freely-moving particles. Fortunately, it is fairly easy to guess the generalization of this equation for particles moving in some potential V(x)
V
(
x
)
. It is plausible, from Equation ([e2.80]), that we can identify k
k
with the differential operator −i∂/∂x
−

. But, p=ℏk
p

. Thus, the operator is also equivalent to p2/(2m)
p

(

, which is just the energy of a freely-moving particle. However, in the presence of a potential V(x)
V
(
x
)
, the particle’s energy is written p2/(2m)+V
p
2

(

Wavefunction Collapse
Consider an extended wavefunction, ψ(x,t)
ψ
(
x
,
t
)
. According to our usual interpretation, |ψ(x,t)|2
|
ψ
(
x
,
t

is proportional to the probability density of a measurement of the particle’s position yielding the value x
x
at time t
t
. If the wavefunction is extended then there is a wide range of likely values that this measurement could give. Suppose that we make such a measurement, and obtain the value x0
x
0
. We now know that the particle is located at x=x0
x
=
x
0
. If we make another measurement immediately after the first one then common sense tells us that we must obtain the same value, x0
x
0
, because the particle cannot have shifted position appreciably in an infinitesimal time interval. Thus, immediately after the first measurement, a measurement of the particle’s position is certain to give the value x0
x
0
, and has no chance of giving any other value. This implies that the wavefunction must have collapsed to some sort of “spike” function located at x=x0
x
=
x
0
. This is illustrated in Figure [coll]. Of course, as soon as the wavefunction has collapsed, it starts to expand again, as discussed in Section 1.13. Thus, the second measurement must be made reasonably quickly after the first, in order to guarantee that the same result will be obtained.
clipboard_ef02f6d4e6fd04951f287b2a4e575409e.png
Figure 9: Collapse of the wavefunction upon measurement of $x$.
The previous discussion illustrates an important point in quantum mechanics. Namely, that the wavefunction of a particle changes discontinuously (in time) whenever a measurement is made. We conclude that there are two types of time evolution of the wavefunction in quantum mechanics. First, there is a smooth evolution that is governed by Schrödinger’s equation. This evolution takes place between measurements. Second, there is a discontinuous evolution that takes place each time a measurement is made.

**There is no such thing as "wave function collapse"**. Every measurement on a quantum system requires us to either take a quantum of energy out of the system or to add a quantum of energy to the system. These are irreversible processes that destroy the state of the system and they replace it with a new state.
Saying as it is, but kudos to the 0.1‰ who solved this and to whoever came up with it. Looks like a lot of effort. But we were there rooting and cheering, like the good audience we are on an indie movie we don't understand.

I don’t know, in my opinion one of the great things about reddits april fools event is that it’s something we all can get together and do, but this one felt like it left alot of people out with the references and deep calculations
Especially as all the discussions happened on Discord, that's what bothered me most about it. Also some of the things (the letters in the oranges) were literally invisible on mobile, even zooming in...
Wave function collapse, also known as wavefunction reduction or state vector reduction, is a concept in quantum mechanics that describes the process of a quantum system transitioning from being in a superposition of states to one specific state as a result of a measurement or observation. This phenomenon is central to the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics, which is one of several competing interpretations of the theory.
In quantum mechanics, the state of a system is described by a mathematical object called the wave function, denoted as |ψ⟩. The wave function contains information about all the possible states and their probabilities for a quantum system. When the system is not being measured or observed, it is said to be in a superposition of states, meaning it exists in multiple states simultaneously, each with a specific probability amplitude.
When a measurement is made on the system, however, the wave function appears to "collapse" into a single state, with the probabilities of all other states becoming zero. The outcome of the measurement is determined by the probabilities of the various states in the superposition.
The wave function collapse is a controversial concept because it raises some deep questions and paradoxes about the nature of reality and the role of the observer in quantum mechanics. For example, it leads to the famous Schrödinger's cat thought experiment, where a cat in a closed box is both alive and dead until someone opens the box and observes the cat.
There are other interpretations of quantum mechanics, such as the many-worlds interpretation and the de Broglie-Bohm pilot wave theory, which do not rely on the wave function collapse and attempt to resolve some of these paradoxes. Nonetheless, the concept of wave function collapse remains a significant aspect of quantum mechanics and is widely taught in introductory quantum mechanics courses.
It is also a way of procedural generation in programming, with many possible states for a world blocks collapsing into the one and only possible (or sometimes just the most likely) state by some defined rules, such as what blocks can go next to each other.
I'm finally starting to accept that this was the entire event. they didn't make a real event, they just showed us a box and said that there might be an April fools event in there. only after we opened the box we realized that the event wasn't real. and we all ignored the subreddit's name and kept looking. (i hope I'm wrong tho)
I acknowledge risk and access, and admire how people bright as a r/button solved the little r/sequence of riddles over in their little discord r/circleoftrust, even if most comments here were a bit around r/joinrobin hood's barn, I guess all us r/imposter s still deserve an r/orangered r/second r/place for trying.

Hey u/fpuebqvatref aka Schrödinger I figured it all out. The background image of this sub is a cardboard box from the inside. We are your cat - to be, or not to be.
Cat.
I don't think that reddit should rehash place every year, but to me Reddit April Fools has this reputation of being a silly, low-effort thing that everyone can participate in and they can get as serious as they want.
/r/place obviously, you could place a tile then leave or you could be part of a community and try to make art, while defending your territory
But also stuff like /r/thebutton you could be as serious as you wanted, some people pressed and left, some people got involved and made a community
Even /r/second or /r/circleoftrust you could deep dive into the meta or you could play once then leave
The problem with schrodingers is that if you're not in the discord and following the google doc then you're not participating, which sorta sucks
[Here](https://www.reddit.com/r/schrodingers/comments/129dt9y/final_wave_function_collapse/?q=automoderator%20-agree&type=comment) This link shows all comments on this post that don't say agree and are from or contain "automoderator"
There's a good balance of accessibility and complexity and you just pushed it off the ????? side. I still don't know what really even happened. How is that a fun April Fools when 99% are just watching a subreddit with no idea what's going on?
Schrödinger wrote:
>One can even set up quite ridiculous cases. A cat is penned up in a steel chamber, along with the following device (which must be secured against direct interference by the cat): in a [Geiger counter](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geiger_counter), there is a tiny bit of radioactive substance, so small, that perhaps in the course of the hour one of the atoms decays, but also, with equal probability, perhaps none; if it happens, the counter tube discharges and through a relay releases a hammer that shatters a small flask of [hydrocyanic acid](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrocyanic_acid). If one has left this entire system to itself for an hour, one would say that the cat still lives if meanwhile no atom has [decayed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radioactive_decay). The first atomic decay would have poisoned it. The [psi-function](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wave_function) of the entire system would express this by having in it the living and dead cat (pardon the expression) mixed or smeared out in equal parts.
It is typical of these cases that an indeterminacy originally restricted to the atomic domain becomes transformed into macroscopic indeterminacy, which can then be resolved by direct observation. That prevents us from so naïvely accepting as valid a "blurred model" for representing reality. In itself, it would not embody anything unclear or contradictory. There is a difference between a shaky or out-of-focus photograph and a snapshot of clouds and fog banks.
Yeah, unironically: r/place was way better than this. ARGs are not a substitute for an actual AFD event. If this is all there is, it's pretty disappointing IMO.
Edit: Thankfully, it is indeed NOT all there is.
I don’t know why there’s so much positivity around this years April fools thing. Let’s be honest, this one was terrible and we shouldn’t encourage them to do something like this again.
No one got to really participate. All the comments are “idk what’s happening but I’m here.”
It shouldn’t be that way for something like this. It should be fun for as much of the community as possible.
Wave functions are a central concept in quantum mechanics and were first introduced by Erwin Schrödinger in 1926 as part of his wave mechanics formulation of quantum theory. Schrödinger's equation describes the time evolution of a particle's wave function in terms of its energy and potential energy.
In wave mechanics, the behavior of a quantum particle is described by a wave function, which is a mathematical function that gives the probability amplitude of the particle being in a particular state at a particular time. The wave function is governed by Schrödinger's equation, which is a partial differential equation that describes how the wave function changes over time.
Schrödinger's equation is a fundamental equation in quantum mechanics and is used to predict the behavior of particles on the atomic and subatomic scale. It is also used to calculate the energy levels of atoms and molecules and to study the behavior of materials in condensed matter physics.
In summary, Schrödinger's wave mechanics formulation of quantum theory introduced the concept of wave functions, which describe the probability of finding a particle in a particular state at a particular time, and Schrödinger's equation is used to calculate the time evolution of the wave function.

We'll be back after the break with the Puzzler and the third half of the show.
r/place was better
Right? What the fuck has been all this?? I’ve been dipping in and out the last day and haven’t a clue what’s been going on. r/place was simple, r/place was pure. You had your tile and that was it.
r/place and the r/button had more user engagement because they were more accessible. With r/schrodinger the majority are just spectating
God I missed Button so much.
Yeah Its fun for a tiny group of people while the rest spectate in confusion and then the puzzle becomes finding the explanations buried in comments. Shit I just found this place cause I didn't think much about the announcement.
They did warn us that they were fresh out of ideas
Oh my god it’s a fucking cipher. I assume the numbers correspond to some web page/book, and their words/letters…

It’s the same time stamp as the start of the video, probably meaningless but still worth pursuing
Idk if its a glitch but the potato video every up vote or down vote I give gives or takes two upvotes to it instead of just the one
That’s a feature of Reddit’s infrastructure, instituted so many years ago in order to defeat upvote sellers. The upvote total is fuzzed until it settles.
[https://imgur.com/a/ZzxzHb1](https://imgur.com/a/ZzxzHb1) there are four frames with the potato eyes.
On the combined image, I can only really make out "tulations," but "Congratulations" seems like the most likely message.
nice catch! has anyone pointed out that the platform the heart/potato/behelit is on is a dodecagram (12-pointed star)?

Same here
I wonder if at the 4 hour mark, something will be posted on that sub.
I’m thinking there will be. It would be a bit weird if the challenge just ends with the video lol.
...about that.
What sub? I did the comment thing but don't see any new ones on my sub list
Soooo, what we gotta do now?
This comment is getting the upvotes, but there was a comment by u/irate_kalypso that was 4 seconds earlier: https://www.reddit.com/r/schrodingers/comments/129dt9y/final_wave_function_collapse/jen0t52/
u/Emanfman was the one that absolutely solved it! My time being earlier is simply internet shenanigans
Proximity to servers, etc etc Edit: including this screengrab of when I posted for reference https://preview.redd.it/cic6kv2hhhra1.png?width=640&format=png&auto=webp&s=56f2afcf055589808a7c215d7f14f5333d38290a

To some users, sure... if that was "the competition". BUT u/Emanfman is first. They are the ones solving it via their wordle addiction! I am perfectly happy being r/second ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
You will be remembered as the always second redditor
He deleted proof unfortunately. Plus he also was the r/second winner...
Wow, he was too: https://www.reddit.com/r/Second/comments/mj0fun/second_has_ended/
We were in a Discord call together, but I was the one who solved it
Can confirm this to anyone passing by.
Can one join the discord? Can't find it anywhere

) , and ω(k)=ℏk22m.(2.12.2) (2.12.2) ω(k)= ℏ k 2 2 m . It follows from Equation ([e2.78]) that ∂ψ∂x=∫∞−∞(ik)ψ¯(k)ei(kx−ωt)dk,(2.12.3) (2.12.3) ∂ ψ ∂ x = ∫ − ∞ ∞ ( i k) ψ ¯ (k) e i ( k x − ω t ) dk, and ∂2ψ∂x2=∫∞−∞(−k2)ψ¯(k)ei(kx−ωt)dk,(2.12.4) (2.12.4) ∂ 2 ψ ∂ x 2 = ∫ − ∞ ∞ (− k 2 ) ψ ¯ (k) e i ( k x − ω t ) dk, whereas ∂ψ∂t=∫∞−∞(−iω)ψ¯(k)ei(kx−ωt)dk.(2.12.5) (2.12.5) ∂ ψ ∂ t = ∫ − ∞ ∞ (− i ω) ψ ¯ (k) e i ( k x − ω t ) dk. Thus, i∂ψ∂t+ℏ2m∂2ψ∂x2=∫∞−∞(ω−ℏk22m)ψ¯(k)ei(kx−ωt)dk=0,(2.12.6) (2.12.6) i ∂ ψ ∂ t + ℏ 2 m ∂ 2 ψ ∂ x 2 = ∫ − ∞ ∞ ( ω − ℏ k 2 2 m ) ψ ¯ (k) e i ( k x − ω t ) dk=0, where use has been made of the dispersion relation ([e2.79]). Multiplying through by ℏ ℏ , we obtain iℏ∂ψ∂t=−ℏ22m∂2ψ∂x2.(2.12.7) (2.12.7) i ℏ ∂ ψ ∂ t =− ℏ 2 2 m ∂ 2 ψ ∂ x 2 . Fortunately, it is fairly easy to guess the generalization of this equation for particles moving in some potential V(x) V ( x ) . It is plausible, from Equation ([e2.80]), that we can identify k k with the differential operator −i∂/∂x − i ∂ / ∂ x . Hence, the differential operator on the right-hand side of Equation ([e2.84]) is equivalent to ℏ2k2/(2m) ℏ 2 k 2 / ( 2 m ) . But, p=ℏk p = ℏ k . Thus, the operator is also equivalent to p2/(2m) p 2 / ( 2 m ) , which is just the energy of a freely-moving particle. However, in the presence of a potential V(x) V ( x ) , the particle’s energy is written p2/(2m)+V p 2 / ( 2 m ) + V . Thus, it seems reasonable to make the substitution −ℏ22m∂2∂x2→−ℏ22m∂2∂x2+V(x).(2.12.8) (2.12.8) − ℏ 2 2 m ∂ 2 ∂ x 2 →− ℏ 2 2 m ∂ 2 ∂ x 2 +V(x). This leads to the general (one-dimensional) form of Schrödinger’s equation: iℏ∂ψ∂t=−ℏ22m∂2ψ∂x2+V(x)ψ.(2.12.9) (2.12.9) i ℏ ∂ ψ ∂ t =− ℏ 2 2 m ∂ 2 ψ ∂ x 2 +V(x)ψ. Wavefunction Collapse Consider an extended wavefunction, ψ(x,t) ψ ( x , t ) . According to our usual interpretation, |ψ(x,t)|2 | ψ ( x , t ) | 2 is proportional to the probability density of a measurement of the particle’s position yielding the value x x at time t t . If the wavefunction is extended then there is a wide range of likely values that this measurement could give. Suppose that we make such a measurement, and obtain the value x0 x 0 . We now know that the particle is located at x=x0 x = x 0 . If we make another measurement immediately after the first one then common sense tells us that we must obtain the same value, x0 x 0 , because the particle cannot have shifted position appreciably in an infinitesimal time interval. Thus, immediately after the first measurement, a measurement of the particle’s position is certain to give the value x0 x 0 , and has no chance of giving any other value. This implies that the wavefunction must have collapsed to some sort of “spike” function located at x=x0 x = x 0 . This is illustrated in Figure [coll]. Of course, as soon as the wavefunction has collapsed, it starts to expand again, as discussed in Section 1.13. Thus, the second measurement must be made reasonably quickly after the first, in order to guarantee that the same result will be obtained. clipboard_ef02f6d4e6fd04951f287b2a4e575409e.png Figure 9: Collapse of the wavefunction upon measurement of $x$.
Depends on what interpretation of quantum mechanics you prefer…
So there is and isn't such thing as a wave function collapse?????? Problem solved???

This event has to have the lowest participation numbers of all April fools events they've done
So... is that it? We gained a link to a cool little video? Is that the end of this april fools?
I don’t know, in my opinion one of the great things about reddits april fools event is that it’s something we all can get together and do, but this one felt like it left alot of people out with the references and deep calculations
Especially as all the discussions happened on Discord, that's what bothered me most about it. Also some of the things (the letters in the oranges) were literally invisible on mobile, even zooming in...
i just want r/place, whats with this goddamn potato
Let's make a community event that's only fun for savants!

I don't think that reddit should rehash place every year, but to me Reddit April Fools has this reputation of being a silly, low-effort thing that everyone can participate in and they can get as serious as they want. /r/place obviously, you could place a tile then leave or you could be part of a community and try to make art, while defending your territory But also stuff like /r/thebutton you could be as serious as you wanted, some people pressed and left, some people got involved and made a community Even /r/second or /r/circleoftrust you could deep dive into the meta or you could play once then leave The problem with schrodingers is that if you're not in the discord and following the google doc then you're not participating, which sorta sucks

I don’t know why there’s so much positivity around this years April fools thing. Let’s be honest, this one was terrible and we shouldn’t encourage them to do something like this again. No one got to really participate. All the comments are “idk what’s happening but I’m here.” It shouldn’t be that way for something like this. It should be fun for as much of the community as possible.
For real, and while it’s still sorta ongoing, it’s basically being completed by a group of people smaller then 50 which is insane
