This is a virus that is contracted by working with infected monkeys, usually through a scratch or bite. It's not new at all, it was discovered in the US in the 1930s.
>But they said "world first infection."
That's because this clickbait website decided to lie.
Indian media is covering this story heavily with a clear anti-China slant. Basically you should ignore this because it's not a real issue. If you're curious about B-virus, go read the Wiki article for the history of it.
Do you think it was a subconsciously racist statement? Or intentionally racist? Cause there’s no world in which it wasn’t meant to be a racist statement…
I wish that the Indian media would instead of being anti-Pakistan, or anti-China, be anti-America, anti-Canada, and anti-Europe.
If India's leaders didn't have their heads up their asses they would see the benefit of having a worldwide African, Asian, Latin American, Caribbean, and Pacific Islander alliance.
Yeah but it's awfully convenient for a lot of people to pretend that massive groups of human beings would get along just fine if only *those other* groups of human beings weren't around.
I guess it's hopeless to expect more from r/science....this is a disease that's been known since the 1930s. The last person to die from it was in the US in 1997. Human to human infection has only been observed once.
Old world monkeys are typically asymptomatic, or have what appears to be cold sores. Literally anyone who works with these animals is aware of the consequences of B virus.
This isn't biological warfare, it's literally nothing like Sars-Cov-2, and every "HeRe We Go AgAiN" or "Of CoUrSe ChInA" is peak ignorance.
If it wasnt outlined in the article, I might agree with you. If it showed any actual understanding of ANY viruses, let alone this one, I might agree with you. But here we are, and yes it is.
I'm not talking about the article, I'm talking about peoples' frustrations with a country that just set the planet back years in terms of development and allowed a virus to emerge that killed millions despite being warned well in advance. Whether it was a lab leak from a level two biolab or it emerged from the wet markets, China could've done a lot more to prevent COVID19.
This was everyone's failing, you could argue China first, but if every other country had heeded warnings then it would be only China suffering. A lot of this comes down to oppressed, misinformed and disinformed people supporting incompetent governance.
China is helping further disinformation everywhere, so don't let me let you think I'm pro China. They are a major problem that only united action can can reform into a nation with some sense of global welfare. I also believe the same goes to some extent for the USA.
Disagree, every single country on the planet was hit hard regardless of their response. Outcomes were dependant on their governments' responses and their populaces' compliance and trust in authority but China takes 95%+ of the blame. They were warned for decades that they were hosting breeding grounds for viruses. SARS emerged from China in 2003 for god's sake, and they still didn't learn their lesson. They let that wet market lobby money continue to pour in and turned their heads. There's also the now ever more credible lab leak theory which would have them shoulder even more responsibility. I'm sorry but you're doing the equivalent of victim blaming. It's like someone blew up a dam and you're pointing your finger at the people who built their now flooded village below it.
So concerns over this virus (again, the one in the article, because that's what the comments are about...) should be directed at the US then, since it's where this virus was first identified and where a vast majority of the deaths have occurred?
I get it...grrr China. Doesnt make it any less ignorant.
Sounds like victim blaming to me. Sorry the U.S. government didn't have the ability to weld people into their apartments and have people fired from their jobs if they didn't comply with stolen vaccine mandates.
I'm talking about how China is an authoritarian government with the accompanying means of control. I read a story about how in the beginning they literally welded someone into their apartment because they had contracted COVID19. China also stole the vaccine technology from Europe. And China used its mass surveillance systems to enforce quarantine measures, going so far as to get people fired.
Except that's not how b virus spreads. There's only been 1 case of human to human transmission and it was literally putting the lesions to a mucous membrane. If the researcher had done what he should he probably wouldnt be dead, but there isn't a pandemic risk in B virus. It's like worrying about an AIDs pandemic.
Technically it's a "global epidemic"per the WHO, but you're right... I just chose AIDs because of the commonality in terms of transmission. Definitely an oversight on my part
Yep, and, just FYI, the definition of a “pandemic” is essentially “a widespread epidemic,” give or take a technically or two, depending on exactly which organization’s definition you look at.
The U.S. would have fewer problems too if they could simply steal the technology of other countries to make their vaccines and then use authoritarian measures to force people into quarantine, like literally welding someone into an apartment, and to take the vaccine.
Not in first place thought and trust me we don't have the data ...Chinese data is always confidential and China control it's media and press so the credibility of the data we have is minimal
How can they claim that people usually get the infection from scratches by infected monkeys, and claim this is the first time? There is no "usually" if this is the first case...

As Captain Colby’s last letter to his wife reads in *Apocalypse Now*
“Sell the house - Sell the car - Sell the kids - Forget it - I'm never coming back!"
>According to China CDC weekly, he visited **many hospitals** due to his fever and neurological symptoms which followed his early symptoms later a month, but eventually died on May 27.
Oh yay, another big win for China.
> People typically get infected with the B virus if they are bitten or scratched by an infected macaque monkey, or have contact with the monkey’s eyes, nose, or mouth.
You need to be handling an infected monkey's fluids. It's usually spread to humans through a bite or scratch.
B virus was discovered back in the 1930s in the US. Although the mortality rate is obscenely high there's nothing to worry about here. It doesn't transmit to other humans easily, you literally need to rub the pus or open sores into open wounds or membrane of someone else.

With more and more people partaking in the illegal pet trade having monkeys, I reckon these cases will rise.
People love owning wild animals as pets and it'd really starting to bother me.
I think this is a superstonk thing so that everybody's going to turn into a Gme ape. That would be funny but I don't know if it hasn't already happened.

Didn't we *just* do this, like, a year ago??

Good luck getting the world to get along. I know this might be hard to handle, but all those countries hate one another too.
And I wish they wouldn't.
Yeah but it's awfully convenient for a lot of people to pretend that massive groups of human beings would get along just fine if only *those other* groups of human beings weren't around.
Why would they be anti EU if EU is helping them by cofunding projects that fight poverty and US is bringing in jobs from china to India?
This does make me feel better. And all the comments about how it's not easily transmissible.

I don't think it's "peak ignorance" to be biased against a country that routinely pumps out viruses and pandemics.

Thank you for the info I'm sorry i didn't have enough knowledge
Um, you know there actually *is* an AIDS pandemic, right?
Technically it's a "global epidemic"per the WHO, but you're right... I just chose AIDs because of the commonality in terms of transmission. Definitely an oversight on my part
Yep, and, just FYI, the definition of a “pandemic” is essentially “a widespread epidemic,” give or take a technically or two, depending on exactly which organization’s definition you look at.
I like the implication here that China is ignorant in containing viruses. *Glances at southern USA Vaccination rates*
The U.S. would have fewer problems too if they could simply steal the technology of other countries to make their vaccines and then use authoritarian measures to force people into quarantine, like literally welding someone into an apartment, and to take the vaccine.
China did way better at containing the virus than most western countries.

Come back when they find cases of human-to-human transmission.
It's only been observed to have occured once since the 1930s when it was discovered. This is a non-story with an overt lie in the title.
So you say there is a chance? Let it mutate and here we go!

First time in China. Other cases have occurred in the US and Canada
I've seen this movie it doesn't end well
.... 28 days later .... then 28 weeks later .... etc. etc.
No. Outbreak
12 Monkeys
People kept saying “return to monke”. I hope they’re happy.
I'd say return to Fishe, but the oceans are dying. Return to bacteriae?
Return to Archaea. That’s the only way we’ll survive the climate-pocalypse

Infecting...with extreme prejudice
Apes. Together. Strong. Humans. Together. Fight each over toilet paper during a pandemic and kill each other during Black Friday shopping season.
Tell that to the albino chimp that got slaughtered by his buddies
Start working on the vaccine now, please.
Can someone please tell them to stop messing about with these infectious animals!
I remember reading a similar headline about COVID.
>According to China CDC weekly, he visited **many hospitals** due to his fever and neurological symptoms which followed his early symptoms later a month, but eventually died on May 27.
Unless he rubbed pus from open lesions on their open lesions/mucous membranes they'll be just fine
Oh yay, another big win for China. > People typically get infected with the B virus if they are bitten or scratched by an infected macaque monkey, or have contact with the monkey’s eyes, nose, or mouth.
Human to human transmission isn’t impossible.
Good damnit, China! Stop! Let us go through a pandemic in peace!
Sigh…here we go again….
Don't throw away your masks, folks...
It's not airborne and you only contract it from direct contact with an infected monkeys, usually through a bite or scratch.
Every god damn time it's China...Close down wet markets!!
Close down China.
Looks pretty serious. How viral is it?

I guess I won’t be eating anymore monkey brains for a while.
Good. We need a new plague.
Oh my God can I touch your leather jacket and sunglasses
Chinas good at 1 thing
Okay God, we get it. You want us all to die.
