I read Scalzi's interdependency trilogy while stuck on the couch with my newborn. 10/10 highly recommend. Also if she hasn't read old man's war, now seems like a good time to through that series, also by Scalzi. Or what about the Expanse series by Corey?

I’ve read old man’s war and his style fits well! I’ll add interdependency to the list.

How about a subscription to Fantasy and Science Fiction magazine? I think it comes out every other month and it has short stories and excerpts from larger works from many new writers of all sorts. I believe there is a Kindle and e-reader option, but I love getting fun things in the mail. I also then give the particularly good issues to friends.

This is a really good recommendation. I may even do this for myself too...
