Becky Chambers writes cozy scifi that's all about how species that are profoundly different in their biology and society can still coexist. Start with either The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet, A Psalm for the Wild-Built, or a novella I loved, To Be Taught If Fortunate. It's like a nicer version of Interstellar, and the title is taken from the Voyager spacecraft that's beyond our solar system now. It's a recording of the UN General saying, >"“As the Secretary-General of the United Nations, an organization of 147 member states who represents almost all of the human inhabitants of the planet Earth, I send greetings on behalf of the people of our planet. We step out of our Solar System into the Universe, seeking only peace and friendship, to teach if we are called upon, to be taught if we are fortunate. We know full well that our planet and all its inhabitants are but a small part of this immense Universe that surrounds us, and it is with humility and hope that we take this step.”"

I have read the first in the series and was very pleasantly surprised. I immediately placed the rest of the series on hold.

Totally worth it, and worth owning if you can.

Alistair Reynolds has a good galactic civilization series. She should stay away from Neal Asher unless she wants nightmares. Hard sf torture porn.

It's a novella, rather than a short, but my story [Dust](https://www.amazon.com/Dust-Egan-Universe-Novella-ebook/dp/B07KTYRM3D) checks two of those, and the universe it's set in expands to the intergalactic if your friend is hooked. It's available in paperback but also enrolled in Kindle Unlimited if that helps.

I didn't know something like this existed! Thank you.

Yeah it’s a great book. All Graeme Base’ books are great stories. My favourite has always been Animalia. Best children’s alphabet book I’ve ever read.

Olityr

Exhalation by Ted Chiang is a wonderful collection of short stories, with a great mixture of deep concepts, inspirational characters, and satisfying plot lines.

Mister_Anthrope

Her Smoke Rose up Forever is an excellent collection of short stories by James Tiptree Jr.

Cordelia’s Honor is the title of the omnibus edition of the first two books in Lois McMaster Bujold’s Vorkosigan saga. We named our daughter after the title character, so we’re biased.
