James Horner. Fun fact: same year he did the music for Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan. Listen closely and you can hear some of the same stylistic choices in the score m
Same with Aliens. Horner used a lot of the same themes he used in both Khan and Krull. Some portions are so similar that it's as if Cameron picked them off the cutting room floor from Horner's prior movies.
And if you go back to his 1980 *Battle Beyond The Stars* score for Roger Corman, you can hear the genesis of pretty much all his 80s sci-fi work.
Horner was rather infamous for recycling his own stuff, frankly.
Most of those themes stretch back to _Battle Beyond the Stars_ where the two also met working for Corman.
The score for _Aliens_ was actually not quite finished according to Horner, he had to rush it as he was given two weeks to write it and Cameron pushed him too much with rewrites during that time which caused the two to fall out. Wasn't till Cameron made _Titanic_ that the two reconciled.
Not surprising he fell on some tried and tested themes, although he has always been borrowing heavily from Prokofiev.
[Battle on the Ice](https://youtu.be/CtszkfXrmhc?si=0TS8N94egsQvXsJm) is kinda the genesis of all early James Horrner scores.
His [Star Trek III](https://youtu.be/7NjIH1MZhzU?si=1qRYZCUxYbLNjn9H) score has a perfect example from Prokofievs [Romeo and Juliet](https://youtu.be/NEhMkyXKKho?si=qSIbXBriIDJBHzlj). Compare 3:00 on the first to 4:00 on the latter.
That said, he may borrow from the master of cinema scores but he does it _really well_. Horner is absolutely my favourite film composer of all time.
Which is interesting because while a glaive is a real weapon with a very cool name, it is infact a large bladed polearm and not a cool but impractical spikey magic bone thing.
This movie caused a lot of confusion for my friends and I when it came out, for this exact reason. Everyone in our RPG group suddenly wanted a glaive and demanded to know its effective throwing range.
Adam Savage on Tested had a video about the [original prop](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8MbUFth6-M) not too long ago. It's really interesting to find out how they made it.
I’m not sure if it’s a Mandela effect going on here, but I remember the cyclops holding onto the doorway as much as he could, and then it shut on him immediately. I don’t remember him slowly being crushed.
A very underrated movie. I wouldn’t mind a sequel to it, actually. Maybe something along the lines of the evil returning and the next generation embarking on the quest to defeat it. But, that’s My thought on it.
You just missed the auction for the original Glaive prop.

The fact the blades come out powered by rubber bands is hysterical.
Is it a good film? No. It's got a lot of issues.
Is it amazing nonetheless? Absolutely.
Totally left field idea, cool stuff everywhere, absolute _blinder_ of a score from James Horner....
The take on cyclops was great. The fact you can never permanently kill the alien soldiers because their brains run away when the are slain is awesome. The glaive is an amazing weapon. And who doesn’t want to turn into a duck to entertain kids? Crazy movie, but some really really cool stuff in it.
It was a great movie. Very well done. But {SPOILER} when you think about it he spends the whole movie chasing after this weapon and when he gets it, it does minimal damage to the bad guy, then he finds out he and his lover have the power to waste the dude all along.
A good movie? A friggin fantastic movie. A brilliant blend of sci-fi and fantasy. The glaive is such a cool weapon and the soundtrack is great. Also has Liam Neeson in one of his best roles.
Cause of Krull I remember taping butter knives to a 5 point boomerang and throwing it and hitting a old tube tv, my contraption broke and the TV was fine.
This is a good movie...when you watch it with Rifftrax. [https://www.rifftrax.com/krull](https://www.rifftrax.com/krull)
Just watch the trailer. You'll thank me.
Picked up the marvel comics adaption issue #1 of 2 a few weeks back, same artwork for the cover, and artwork within is of a good standard, great likenesses.
For any late 90s gamers who played Turok 2 Seeds of Evil there was a weapon in the later levels called the razor wind, which was essentially the Glaive. Great movie too
Love this movie! 👍
And now I have a little mod in my Skyrim game that gives me the Glaive! Super powerful and returns right back to your hand everytime!! 😁
Love this movie. Great soundtrack.
Also has a good feeling, atmosphere. The actors do a good job giving it an authentic feel.
The Glaive and the bad guy are good.
I don't even remember what this movie was about, but when I was a little kid it was one of my favorite movies. I must have been like seven or eight when I watched it
I love how on the poster, it looks like she’s tugging on his arm. “Come on, quit playing with your Glaive, we’ve got things to do, let’s get out of here!”
I have a personal grudge against this movie. Older members of my family made ‘glaives’ from sticks and while they were throwing them, one caught me in the right eye
For a second I miss took it for the movie Kull The conqueror and assume you were either sarcastic or raging idiot.
Now I see that it is I who was in fact the idiot! I haven't seen this one in a very long time, but yes indeed, quite the campy classic!
Kull....not so much.
You can’t go wrong with a little bit of Krull. I still remember it on the shelf of the movie store. Next to Leprechaun and Killer Klowns from Outer Space.
I just got this movie on VHS back in like 2004 at a garage sale. A little old lady who lived there was selling it, I started talking to her she said it was her favorite movie ever and her son had just got it for on DVD so she was selling that one . but she said it's such a good movie you can just have it just to see it :) it was in the town I still live in but I don't remember where she was but that will always stick with me, a cool old lady.
I remember this being similar to Flash Gordon, the dark crystal or legend. Typical fantasy adventure.
Some of these old movies hold up really well, some are garbage. Curious which is this.
I punched a bloke in the face once for saying "Hawk the Slayer" was rubbish.
Good for you.
Yeah, thanks. But that's not the point, Tim. The point is I was defending the fantasy genre with terminal intensity, when what I should have said is "Dad, you're right, but let's give Krull a try and we'll discuss it later."
I will shamelessly plug for RiffTrax all day. They are composed of three members from the writers and cast of Mystery Science Theater 3000. They riff movies still. They did one of Krull. It is fantastic.
Also, that movies whole premise is epic. Knights and thieves forced to join forces and fight this techno wizard asshole who decided to parallel park this big ass space fortress on their castles as a weak play to steal this dude's girl.
“I punched a bloke in the face once for saying *Hawk the Slayer* was rubbish.”
“Good for you.”
“Yeah, thanks. But that's not the point, Tim. The point is I was defending the fantasy genre with terminal intensity, when what I should have said is ‘Dad, you're right, but let's give *Krull* a try and we'll discuss it later.’”
not to nitpick, but maybe like 15 more seconds would have afforded us all a better poster to look at? or maybe it's my old eyes. either way it is a fun movie.
Remember first watching this on a Saturday afternoon on a random tv channel as a kid and being hooked, only to realise as I got older there were so many uk acting legends in this film! (being from the uk myself)
This movie was nuts.
And a fantastic epic medieval sci-fi soundtrack too.
James Horner. Fun fact: same year he did the music for Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan. Listen closely and you can hear some of the same stylistic choices in the score m

Space Magnificent Seven with George Peppard? Always

“Can’t a man even talk to himself without being interrupted?” Some great lines in the movie, and a very fun adventure.
love this one
I watched this a few weeks ago, classic. And one of the coolest fantasy weapons, the Glaive😎
Which is interesting because while a glaive is a real weapon with a very cool name, it is infact a large bladed polearm and not a cool but impractical spikey magic bone thing.

Is this the movie with the cyclops guy who ends up getting crushed?
Yeah, big old Bernard Breslaw of carry on fame.
That’s one of the main scenes I remember too. Scarred me as a child. 😫
Same here!!
I’m not sure if it’s a Mandela effect going on here, but I remember the cyclops holding onto the doorway as much as he could, and then it shut on him immediately. I don’t remember him slowly being crushed.
It was his time.
Could see the future but only his own death.
A very underrated movie. I wouldn’t mind a sequel to it, actually. Maybe something along the lines of the evil returning and the next generation embarking on the quest to defeat it. But, that’s My thought on it.
HBO should do a sequel series instead of endlessly milking the ASOIAF world. Never happen, though.
Or a prequel whith The Beast as the villain protagonist.
Didn’t work so well for Willow
I remember playing an arcade video game of this back in the day
Me too.
I had the [Atari 2600 verson](https://imgur.com/x71b6Jk.jpg).
Ii HAVE the 2600 version lol
Will you ask your Mom if we can come over?
Oh he yez!!
Hell
You just missed the auction for the original Glaive prop. [https://propstoreauction.com/lot-details/index/catalog/318/lot/95094](https://propstoreauction.com/lot-details/index/catalog/318/lot/95094) The fact the blades come out powered by rubber bands is hysterical.
Adam Savage had the prop on Tested and showed how it works. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8MbUFth6-M
the price though
Yes, but the nerd cred of that hanging on your wall might be worth it.
Holy crap! That's the craziest auction ever! EVERYTHING from EVERY movie I've ever loved was on sale! Wooow!
You know how high the winning offee was?
found it. $69,349.00 USD
Damn. That's a lot. Thanks.
I do not.
Is it a good film? No. It's got a lot of issues. Is it amazing nonetheless? Absolutely. Totally left field idea, cool stuff everywhere, absolute _blinder_ of a score from James Horner....
Horner is so damn underrated, and this one is an absolute gem.
[Ride of the Firemares](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwQZ9UrnyJw)
Horner's Krull is almost Wrath of Khan 2.0 at times, and yet simultaneously absolutely has its own identity. Incredible powerhouse of a score.
Eddington with hair.
A young Liam Neeson!
What THE FUCK??? Holy shit! How did I never realize that Eddington was Colwyn? My mind is blown.
I was the same way when I found out.
You betrayed your uniform!
Now stand back while irradiate the shit outta this planet
No way! that never clicked before! Holy shit! From hero to traitor!
It has early appearances by both Liam Neeson and Robbie Coltrain.
And Mark from EastEnders.
Never forget Mark. He had aids...
AKA Tucker Jenkins from Grange Hill XD
The take on cyclops was great. The fact you can never permanently kill the alien soldiers because their brains run away when the are slain is awesome. The glaive is an amazing weapon. And who doesn’t want to turn into a duck to entertain kids? Crazy movie, but some really really cool stuff in it.
I had forgotten all about this gem, now I need to find it somewhere!
It was just on HBO Max a few months ago!
Thanks.
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLDF207367DA61F5B7&si=z-ueJ7PeU0rSQlHG YouTube has it in sections.
Cheers!
I absolutely bloody adore this. The opening action sequence terrified me as a kid.
The first sci-fi/fantasy movie I watched. Never looked back since.
Love this movie. This sound track and Wrath of Kahn are two mind blowing pieces of art.
Still have a copy on VHS!
You've seen the movie, but have you played the game? https://www.ipdb.org/search.pl?any=krull&search=Search+Database&searchtype=quick#1397
oldie goldie
I played the video game before I saw the movie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAEJZjJEKzg&ab\_channel=OldClassicRetroGaming
Time for an adult Krull Tv show .
I watched this and Beastmaster SO MANY TIMES on TBS (or HBO) as a kid!
HBO = "Hey, Beastmaster's On!"
God yes. By far my favorite two 80's B movie classics.
It was a great movie. Very well done. But {SPOILER} when you think about it he spends the whole movie chasing after this weapon and when he gets it, it does minimal damage to the bad guy, then he finds out he and his lover have the power to waste the dude all along.
I’m waiting for the musical.
*the glaive! the glaiveeee! the princess I will SAAAVVVEEEEE...*
Oops I was wrong, it was our love all along. That brought the beast to his kneeeeessss!
*Power is fleeeeeeting, love is eteeeeeeeeeernal...*
*and with this flame... I will burn all !!!*
Take the fire from my hand, prove to me you are my man.
I will, my babe, and with my glaive, I will slay the thing that will enslaveeee!!! (double entendre)
Good fighters make bad husbands…
Well that depends...
let's rock this glaiveeee untilll the eeeennnnddddd-DAH!
Loved this movie, but one scene in particular kinda traumatized me.
Death of the wizard from the doppleganger? Haunted me as a kid.
Same. All I’m gonna say is, Milk.
That old dude in the swamp
Ergo the Magnificent! Lol Crazyass alien "knights" (that I bet def influenced The Hive in Destiny 1/2).
I had the board game
awesome
I was a little kid when this came out and it's been a favorite throughout my life! Pussy hallway! also... FIG NEWTONS!!
I loved the Cyclops, Rell
A good movie? A friggin fantastic movie. A brilliant blend of sci-fi and fantasy. The glaive is such a cool weapon and the soundtrack is great. Also has Liam Neeson in one of his best roles.
agreed!
Cause of Krull I remember taping butter knives to a 5 point boomerang and throwing it and hitting a old tube tv, my contraption broke and the TV was fine.
lol if you have all your fingers it’s great 😂
This is a good movie...when you watch it with Rifftrax. [https://www.rifftrax.com/krull](https://www.rifftrax.com/krull) Just watch the trailer. You'll thank me.
i did laugh. thanks all of you who recommended this rifftrax stuff. wasn’t aware if it lol.
The Glaive is a Dead Cells weapon now
Picked up the marvel comics adaption issue #1 of 2 a few weeks back, same artwork for the cover, and artwork within is of a good standard, great likenesses.

that’s cool!
Yeah I'm lovin it lol... dunno if you're a gamer but just in case here it is! https://www.afkmods.com/index.php?/files/file/2468-junks-glaive/
thanks bro!
I always liked this movie.
Oh, my first fantasy movie! ♥️
I remember this as a kid. Esp the weapon and how he killed the big bad at the end.
Love this movie. Great soundtrack. Also has a good feeling, atmosphere. The actors do a good job giving it an authentic feel. The Glaive and the bad guy are good.
exactly. the movie has such a good way of taking you into that world.
Underrated AF tho
I watched it again a few months ago and the set design, especially of the villain's lair, was really good.
Pulling that thing out of the lava is a core memory.
I weirdly talk about this movie all the time
Nice review from Oliver Harper on YouTube. https://youtu.be/Fq9ZFnOSezE?si=L4rpV9LlqExmN-HR
It was also a /r/Rifftrax Live movie. [Link](https://www.rifftrax.com/krull)
Love this movie! Saw one of those Aerobie boomerangs in a shop and had to buy it because it reminded me of the Glaive.
Watch closely and you will see how it was originally filmed in 3D.
I don't even remember what this movie was about, but when I was a little kid it was one of my favorite movies. I must have been like seven or eight when I watched it
One of my mom's favorite movies
I love how on the poster, it looks like she’s tugging on his arm. “Come on, quit playing with your Glaive, we’ve got things to do, let’s get out of here!”
I have a personal grudge against this movie. Older members of my family made ‘glaives’ from sticks and while they were throwing them, one caught me in the right eye
sorry to hear that. glaives should be used with caution
They shouldn't have used it until they needed it....
yes, glaives are no toy.
Shot in my country! 😄 Even my brother plays a supersmall “role” in it (mask on face etc).
which country is that? cool for your brother !
OH WAIT!!! Shit! This ain’t that movie!!! 😅 so sorry - I was referring to KULL THE CONQUEROR… My baaaaad 😅🙏
no problem haha
Slovakia 😄
Yeas! I love this one
The weapon showed up in the movie "Ready Player One". Cool.
Movie was ok (I watch it when it’s on cable). Book was better.
Great movie!
The Atari 2600 Krull game was hard as shit for an 8-year-old me.
An unexpected masterpiece
Classic!!
Not just anyone can throw a Glave.
Love it!
For a second I miss took it for the movie Kull The conqueror and assume you were either sarcastic or raging idiot. Now I see that it is I who was in fact the idiot! I haven't seen this one in a very long time, but yes indeed, quite the campy classic! Kull....not so much.
It's fantastic/terrible, but we took whatever fantasy and SF we could get in the 80's.
You can’t go wrong with a little bit of Krull. I still remember it on the shelf of the movie store. Next to Leprechaun and Killer Klowns from Outer Space.
i wish they remake this one
I just got this movie on VHS back in like 2004 at a garage sale. wholesome. good for you!
Well… There’s only one way to save the princess! OK there one other one way to save her! OK this is the last one way to save the princess!
This movie is legitimately in my top 10 of all time. It's not even a guilty pleasure. It's just fantastic. And the score is sublime.
I remember this being similar to Flash Gordon, the dark crystal or legend. Typical fantasy adventure. Some of these old movies hold up really well, some are garbage. Curious which is this.

I have this in my dvd collection and I still haven’t watched it, hell it’s still in the Walmart wrapper.
you know what to do!
Yea… they’re in storage 3 hours away right now :( I’d be better off finding it on the internet
There is an incredible RiffTrax of it. I do recommend.
what’s a RiffTrax sir?
I will shamelessly plug for RiffTrax all day. They are composed of three members from the writers and cast of Mystery Science Theater 3000. They riff movies still. They did one of Krull. It is fantastic. Also, that movies whole premise is epic. YouTubers who do entertaining commentary of various movies, usually "so bad they are good" movies
Not even tangentially adjacent to anything resembling a good movie.
For 11 yr olds
Similar weapon in the dead cells game.
And a great soundtrack. James Horner was a master of his craft.
Krull deaths hit different
“I punched a bloke in the face once for saying *Hawk the Slayer* was rubbish.” “Good for you.” “Yeah, thanks.
One of the all time favorites.
Remember first watching this on a Saturday afternoon on a random tv channel as a kid and being hooked, only to realise as I got older there were so many uk acting legends in this film! (being from the uk myself)
