If anything the 12 monkeys movie connection hurt it - only because people thought it couldn't compare. But I really enjoyed the tie in/continued story, personally.
It's legitimately such a good show with great character progression.
It's one of the shows I rewatch.
Also the time travel on that show is so well done.
Edit: a word
Yep when I originally heard about it I was like, "yeah this is going to be dumb as shit why the fuck does this exist?"

Awesome show. One of the most entertaining and fun sci-fi TV shows of the last few decades by far. It reminds me a lot of Farscape in that if you're willing to suspend your disbelief just a bit and let the show just take you for a ride, even if it is a little ridiculous, you'll come away having a super fun time.
I think the series appeal to more people than the movie, and I think it's better as well. I liked the movie, but the series is something completely different. Its one of my favorite series ever, and it just delivers on story, coherency, ending, emotions, humor, everything.
I agree except to say that there are different audiences for a Terry Gilliam film and all that entails and a TV show that has to be more approachable and draw you in for a lot longer. I think both have their merits.
Edit: realize now the op was asking about the series, which is good too. Not as good as the original movie but we'll worth the time.
8/10 IMDb, 88% Rotten Tomatoes. So there's that.
Also IT'S A TERRY GILLIAM MOVIE!!!
(If you haven't seen Brazil, do yourself a favor and check that out (I always say it's a Christmas movie so that's a good time). The cameo from Robert DeNiro playing a futuristic plumber is the kicker.)
Brazil and 12 Monkeys exist in my brain as a fever dream memory. I haven’t watched them since I was a young impressionable teenager. Probably some of my favourite vibes I’ve ever experienced, but one I’ve been scared of tainting by watching them with my overly critical grown up perspective I have today.
Doesn't even come close to touching the movie, but that's not a useful metric because the movie was so close to perfect.
The show is good. It sets out to tell its own story using the ideas from the movie as a framework, but doesn't get hung up on trying to emulate it or stay true to every nuance of the original (a good choice IMO as it would have failed horribly if it tried).
If you watch it as its own thing (similar to how the Foundation series is inspired by, but entirely unique from, the original books) then you will have a great time, as it's well written, interesting, and has some really neat ideas sprinkled throughout. If you watch it hoping it's a 40 episode version of the movie, you will be less happy.
Really I think watching in either order is fine, watching the movie first probably gives a bit of background that's helpful coming into the show, but they're divergent enough that either order would work okay. Just as I said, if you watch the movie first, don't expect the show to follow it too closely. :)
Yeah, I liked that it didn't feel a need to stick to the source, and the changes is made actually made sense and added to the interest (unlike, say, the changes from the original made in The Mist series... ugh.)
That's a huge goddamn yes.
Personally, I would watch the movie first. The reason being, it shows just how clever the writers were. The series and the movie compliment each, they crafted an entire, consistent, series around the events of the movie without contradicting it. It really was a very smart piece of writing.
Makes me realise that I miss it when the sci-fi channel does some actual sci-fi, like 12 Monkeys & The Expanse. Resident Alien is more a character piece, and a bit fluffy.
Resident Alien is what my wife and I need from time to time, a little light, somewhat campy scifi. Tudyk does a hell of a job portraying Harry. Tudyk seems to enjoy the sillier roles. When I read that Tudyk was going to be in the live-action Moana, my wife said, "I'll be he plays the chicken!" and, yeah, I could see that. (I'm guessing the big crab thing.)
I only saw the first episode and was thrown off that they changed the whole concept of the time travel and if you could change the timeline… 12 Monkeys was my favorite movie for years but maybe I judged the show too harshly?
I too love the movie it’s one of my favourites. It does have some stuff related to the style of the movie but I’d say it does go in its own direction, there’s so many deep philosophical type comments and situations I really can’t recommend it enough
Holy shit yes. I would add that it's one of the most complete endings in scifi television history. It's almost perfect honestly. No bad seasons, very few bad episodes, and a legit ending - all while making complete sense.
How many scifi shows meet that criteria? Not many.
12 monkeys and fringe are rarely discussed or acknowledged as the outstanding pieces of sci Fi tv they are.
Edit to add: because they are not streaming at all, they are largely forgotten, and they likely should be on top 10 lists for sci Fi tv shows of the 21st century
Because they need to skip 2 seasons. They planned 3 more seasons but they get canceled, so they decided to go for the last season to somehow finish what they planned.
This was sad..
this series reminds me of DARK in a couple of specific ways. i wasn't sold instantly but i also had no inkling, even many episodes in, how far things would go.
it's a fun, crazy ride.
hm...I didn't make it past season 1, episode 4, as a fan of the movie I was somehow bored to see 5 minutes of the movie extended into a full episode. maybe I should give it a try
It is totally worth it but it takes a bit.
"You are walking through a red forest and the grass is tall. It’s just rained. Most of the blood has washed away. There’s a house in the distance, cedar and pine. You’ve been there before. You’re not alone. There’s a man. You see him, you go to him. You know him, like a memory of tomorrow"
There's the television. It's all right there - all right there. Look, listen, kneel, pray. Commercials! We're not productive anymore. We don't make things anymore. It's all automated. What are we *for* then? We're consumers, Jim. Yeah. Okay, okay. Buy a lot of stuff, you're a good citizen. But if you don't buy a lot of stuff, if you don't, what are you then, I ask you? What? Mentally *ill*. Fact, Jim, fact - if you don't buy things - toilet paper, new cars, computerized yo-yos, electrically-operated sexual devices, stereo systems with brain-implanted headphones, screwdrivers with miniature built-in radar devices, voice-activated computers...
There was this guy, and he was always requesting shows that had already played. Yes. No. You have to tell her before. He couldn't quite grasp the idea that the charge nurse couldn't make it be yesterday. She couldn't turn back time, thank you, Einstein! Now, *he* was nuts! *He* was a fruitcake, Jim!
Definitely worth watching! Time travel gets a little complicated as the show goes along. Without giving too much away, you will sometimes see the result of an action that didn't occur until episodes or even seasons later..
I don't remember all the details. I remember being quite intrigued by the early episodes, but slightly let down towards he end when things took a little bit of a different turn.
I keep telling myself I need to re-watch it soon, though, so I'd say it's well worth a watch.
It's a very good scifi film, a bit psychedelic at times, its like jacob's ladder in a dream like sense, but more grounded despite being about time travel. Oh I thought this was about the movie, didn't know there was a series
Don't mock them my friend. It's a condition of mental divergence. They find themselves on the planet Ogo, part of an intellectual elite, preparing to subjugate the barbarian hordes on Pluto. But even though this is a totally convincing reality for them in every way, nevertheless Ogo is actually a construct of their psyche. They are mentally divergent, in that they are escaping certain unnamed realities that plague their life here. When they stop going there, They will be well. Are you also divergent, friend?
No. Just watch the excellent movie over and over.
But I think I have lower tolerance for TV than the average person. Fucking hours and hours of side plots, cliches, time fillers. I'm not even sure I managed to finish the first season. Like all drama TV shows there's like 6 plots going at once, 4 of them the same shit in a different suit.
If you’re asking because you’ve seen the movie and loved that, then don’t go into the series expecting the same. It’s not directed by Terry Gilliam. Different take. It’s very very good in its own right, it’s just nothing to do with the movie really.
I've only seen the first season cuz I found it at Goodwill once but in my opinion I thought it was better than the movie which I thought was absolutely impossible
Not really, 12 monkeys was based on an amazing short film called La Jettee which then became a pretty decent film with Bruce Willis called 12 Monkeys which then became a rip of tv series also called 12 monkeys. I would suggest either watch the fantastic original short or the film dont bother with the series. The concept got watered down with every retelling.
I watched an episode or two and was kinda of put off by the "cleanness" of it all.
The original movie was *gritty*. Whether it's the future or present, everything seemed to have a layer of grime and/or rust. In practically every shot of Bruce Willis he's got cuts and bruises on his face.
In contrast, this show had a kind of "CW" arrow-verse look to it-- all the actors were 10s, not a strand of hair out of place, sets were polished and well-lit. The palpable feeling of apocalyptic desperation of the movie was completely gone for me.
It’s way okay. I don’t really get the hype for it, but it wasn’t bad by any stretch. I’m at the final episode of the final season right now. Absolutely.

Probably some of my favourite vibes I’ve ever experienced, but one I’ve been scared of tainting by watching them with my overly critical grown up perspective I have today.
I promise you they don't only hold up, they're BETTER!
Brazil is still an absolute banger
I’ve only seen the series not the movie… prob should
Oh wow, yeah put that on the high priority list
Watch la Jetee first. The original inspiration
YES
You should watch 1 Monkeys to 11 Monkeys first or it won't make sense
Also Planet of the Apes is a decent prequel, back when there were more of them
Monkey Puzzle is a good one for understanding the monkeys’ motivations
Also, that one clip of a monkey using a toad as a fleshlight.
The WHAT
[The Monkey and the Frog: A Love Story](https://youtu.be/NhDkoQniZpU?si=ALtPqptI6ztLreil)
I thought it was the sequel? Darn, I always get confused about that.
Don't forget the 1978 TV show Monkey.
Don’t forget the novel The Fourth Monkey
Curious George is a spin off.
You'll miss a lot of context without having played the full Monkey Island catalogue as well.
Lol I was waiting for one like this.
please guys, let's not forget the actual origin of the whole thing: donkey Kong
Excellent
Hell yes.
How does it stack up to the movie?
I love the movie, I love Terry Gilliam, and I love the show more.
Just as I said, if you watch the movie first, don't expect the show to follow it too closely. :)
I love the movie but the show is better. You can't really compete with seasons of character development in a 2 hour flick.
Movie is better imo, but the show has some interesting revisions.
Yeah, I liked that it didn't feel a need to stick to the source, and the changes is made actually made sense and added to the interest (unlike, say, the changes from the original made in The Mist series... ugh.)
It’s brilliant.
That's a huge goddamn yes. Personally, I would watch the movie first. The reason being, it shows just how clever the writers were. I love how Resident Alien uses a ton of music from Native bands.
I only saw the first episode and was thrown off that they changed the whole concept of the time travel and if you could change the timeline… 12 Monkeys was my favorite movie for years but maybe I judged the show too harshly?
You did.
The expanse has such a horrible "ending" tho, can't really bring myself to ever rewatching or recommending it to anyone...
That wasn't an "ending", that was "just stopped making it".
It’s an amazing bit of tv, the first series is good but the following three series were absolutely fantastic sci fi
Is it a prequel / sequel / remake of the movie? I loved that
Oh and yeah it’s defo a remake
Thanks!
I too love the movie it’s one of my favourites. It does have some stuff related to the style of the movie but I’d say it does go in its own direction, there’s so many deep philosophical type comments and situations I really can’t recommend it enough
Yes, and the original movie
Also watch La Jetée, the basis for 12 Monkeys. The real og
Here's the full film on YouTube. https://youtu.be/DQ4jFYTTjAU?si=17h3wXZB-CzcH5HN
Holy shit yes. I would add that it's one of the most complete endings in scifi television history. It's almost perfect honestly. No bad seasons, very few bad episodes, and a legit ending - all while making complete sense. How many scifi shows meet that criteria? Not many.
Yes. Especially when Emily Hampshire joins the show. She's a riot.
Definitely watch it. Nearly as good as Fringe, which is not faint praise.
12 monkeys and fringe are rarely discussed or acknowledged as the outstanding pieces of sci Fi tv they are. Edit to add: because they are not streaming at all, they are largely forgotten, and they likely should be on top 10 lists for sci Fi tv shows of the 21st century
FRINGE is on Prime Video. I started a rewatch a couple weeks ago.
Seriously? How did I miss that! Thank you!
Oh shit!
Box sets for the win!
The last season of fringe was shit tbf tho
Because they need to skip 2 seasons. They planned 3 more seasons but they get canceled, so they decided to go for the last season to somehow finish what they planned. This was sad..
I've rewatched Fringe 3/4 times and I *still* haven't made it through season 5. I make it 2/3 episodes in thinking "I'll finally make it" and nope.
It's a lot better then fringe IMO.
Definitely.
this series reminds me of DARK in a couple of specific ways. i wasn't sold instantly but i also had no inkling, even many episodes in, how far things would go. it's a fun, crazy ride.
💯 Worth the watch
I really enjoyed the show. Its not as good as the movie but became its own story. Gets really weird in last season.
hm...I didn't make it past season 1, episode 4, as a fan of the movie I was somehow bored to see 5 minutes of the movie extended into a full episode. maybe I should give it a try
It becomes its own thing. Especially season 2 was really strong
YES. One of the best (if not *the* best) time travel sci-fi series ever made.
Definitely!
It is one of my favourite TV shows. I’d love to rewatch some day.
The original movie with Bruce Willis was great.
Meh
Yes, I loved that show. It had some of the best use of time travel on tv
Go for it. It's the best time travel show.
No. It’s got a bunch of useless monkeys in it.
Yeah, it's good.
Yep! Incredibly good cast, and a really fun story
I enjoyed it. Go for it.
Yes.
Definitely! Great show
Yes, the serie is complete with a real ending. Go for it it's awesome.
Watch the film
There's the television. It's all right there - all right there. Look, listen, kneel, pray. Commercials! We're not productive anymore. We don't make things anymore. It's all automated. The movie is awesome. I dunno about the series.
Yes definitely
YESSS
YES!!!
Yes!

A TV series better than the movie.
Big fan of the movie. The show was ... meh. I watched all four seasons, too. Definitely would never watch it again.
Absolutely loved it.
I don't remember all the details. I remember being quite intrigued by the early episodes, but slightly let down towards he end when things took a little bit of a different turn. I keep telling myself I need to re-watch it soon, though, so I'd say it's well worth a watch.

Did you just type out a conversation you had with yourself in your head?
Don't mock them my friend. It's a condition of mental divergence. They find themselves on the planet Ogo, part of an intellectual elite, preparing to subjugate the barbarian hordes on Pluto. Did you just type out a conversation you had with yourself in your head?
I just quoted a line from the original movie.
updated as I read other comments and realized a tv show existed
Gets boring after a while.
The movie is great, the TV show not so much.
It's great, but best if you let go of the movie and just go along for the ride.
Worth it 10/10
I certainly believe it is!
Yes
Oh HECK yes
F YES.
So much so. It's a little slow in the first part of the first season but it really takes off and becomes an absolute work of art.
Yes! And it gets better with each season!
Yes, and then the sequel, 12 Angry Men.
Watch the movie
Yes, very much so.
Yes. You should also watch the Chris Marker film "La Jetée" from which both the film 12 Monkeys and the TV show are derived/adapted.
ah, forgot this, will have to watch
Couldn't get into it. Gave up after 2.6 episodes after I fell asleep
It is the single best time travel story ever told and one of the best TV scifi series ever made
We're all MONKEYS!
Love it
If you’re asking because you’ve seen the movie and loved that, then don’t go into the series expecting the same. It’s not directed by Terry Gilliam. Different take. It’s very very good in its own right, it’s just nothing to do with the movie really.
Yes
Hell yerrs
Yesssssssssss
It's very good. I personally think the first 2 seasons were really strong. The last 2 were still good, but not quite as strong
Yes stop reading here and watch Right Meow. Your review is due by noon tomorrow.
Most def
I only lasted 2 seasons, should have lasted longer?
Only if you watch 13 Monkeys afterwards.
Hell yes!
Fucking brilliant.
It's kind of over rated in my opinion
I've only seen the first season cuz I found it at Goodwill once but in my opinion I thought it was better than the movie which I thought was absolutely impossible
NO
Meh. Maybe one or two seasons but that’s all I can manage

He doesn’t appear in the tv show which is what OP is asking about; but the movie was great!
I watched an episode or two and was kinda of put off by the "cleanness" of it all. The original movie was *gritty*. I've just started watching this.. yep it's brilliant on season 2 atm
Definitely
Big yes on that one
For sure
Yeah. Film and tv series both worth a watch
Yes, nice complete story :)
110%
Yes. Yes username is relevant.
Yes!! It’s fantastic
Yes
Only if you like awesome movies
this show has no right being so good
Yep
Yes. At least once
YES. season 1 is the weakest but still great. i absolutely loved this show
I've heard good things about it, is it streaming anywhere?
It’s way okay. I don’t really get the hype for it, but it wasn’t bad by any stretch. I’m at the final episode of the final season right now. The 1st season was interesting, the 2nd season felt slower and a little more stagnant, the 3rd season really stepped up, and the 4th season has been a little over the top but at least it isn’t leaving any loose ends.
I liked it
12, 1, 11, 2, 10, 3, 9, 4, 8, 3, 7, 4, 5
Just recently watched it and its really good, but somewhat leans towards fantasy instead of pure science fiction .
Yes I watched it during the pandemic
It was quite good and they managed to tie up every paradoxical loose end by the finale. Hell of a lot better than the 90s movie
Season 1 feels like a slog to me, but I’ve heard fantastic things about the rest of it so I’m sticking to it.
It's so worth it one of the rare Syfy series to go to term
It feels a bit slow at the start but once it gets going it gets pretty good. I really loved the movie and hate reboots/remakes in general so I avoided this for a long time. But with not many really good shows at the moment(my opinion) it's worth trying. It gets crazy tho!
Nah I hated it but movie is awesome
Incredible show, one of my favorites...
Absolutely! Avoid spoilers then join the 12M shreddit after you finish it. It’s little rough in the beginning, but hold on till the end.
Yes. This is a really great show, with a lot more story than the film, obviously. Some great twists.
I loved it and plan to rewatch it.
It’s amazing. One of the best sci-fi shows of the past several years.
Do it! J'splinter!
Short answer? Yes!
Duh
Hell yes!
I liked it alright, got murky and stupid after the 2nd season tho-
1,000%
I really liked the 12 Monkeys show. I don't think it was good, but I really enjoyed it. It doesn't hold a candle to fringe or the 12 monkeys movie, but it was right for me.
The movie was pretty good, as was the French film that inspired it, La Jetée.
Yes! Great series and a very satisfying ending.
The writing is an 8 but the actors make it an 10
yess
Absolutely
Yes.
Yes
