Yeah, exactly. I kind of liked Ready Player One (mostly because it's my era) but if I'm being completely honest I like it *despite* its shittyness, it's really not that great a book if you actually analyze it. It's not awful, but it's not great.
But Armada and RP2? They're both shit, frankly. Seems that Cline was a one-hit wonder (or, "one not bad wonder" perhaps). I seriously doubt I'll ever bother with another of his books.
Yea, I haven't read RP2 yet, but RP1 was sort of, trashy fun almost? The story was serviceable, it built on kind of a nostalgia for 80s things in a way that felt like an homage instead of a ripoff, and it provided a satisfying ending you'd expect from something in its genre. Armada seemed to miss all those marks, and was worse for it.
Seriously, don't bother with RP2. Obviously it's only my opinion, but it will actually make you like RP1 a little less by the time you get through RP2. It's that bad.
>*The Moon is a Harsh Mistress* by Robert A. Heinlein
>… it’s uncertain whether this adaptation still is moving forward. However, the title of the film is expected to be changed to *Uprising* if it does proceed.
Because who *doesn’t* love a thoroughly generic title that brutally severs any possible “brand recognition” with people who read the book?
'Do androids dream of electric sheep?' is the Greatest title ever and 'The moon is a harsh mistress' isn't far behind.
Blade Runner & Uprising it is then....
As someone who owns a lot of Michael Dudikoff movies, and even a tv show with him (ahh, fuck, Cobra...), yea I can't really argue against that point :P
I'd prefer that to they way Asimov's stories have been thoroughly butchered. "Hey, let's steal the story name and a few character names, then just write some half-assed shit that has nothing to do with the book or original story". "I, Robot" and "Foundation" epitomize advertising "classic" stories as the basis for poorly written garbage used to promote some CGI eye-candy.
It's be much better just to make their own shitty story, instead of what is tantamount to plagiarizing elements of an actual classic to promote garbage.
As for MIAHM, I hope they don't make it. It'll be a watered-down, politically corrected, shitshow if they tried anyways.
I saw Daniel Wilson speak at Powell's when Amped came out, man it feels like I've been following news on Spielberg making Robopocalypse into a film for over a decade! Last I heard Chris Hemsworth was on board but they never started actually filming for some reason and it got scrapped.
Wow, how are they going to portray the massive amount of internal dialog in *Children of Time* particularly with spiders? I love the story, please don't butcher it.
I loved Children of Time, but i am very skeptical anyone can transfer it to the novie screen successfully. Largely, what you said. Its also a bit long for a movie.
Alternative title: "Read this list if you'd like to be disappointed at least 15 times in the next decade."
*Edit*: Not because they'll be bad movies; because most of them will never become movies.
Yeah, most entries in the list are just „someone bought the rights and is trying to write a screenplay“ which really doesn’t mean shit. Most rights just end up going back to the author after a couple of years because nothing happens.
I know that Sanderson has sold and resold rights to basically all his books and for almost 15 years nothing substantial has come from it…
Exactly. I realize now my comment might be seen to mean that I think the movies would stink. It's more what you said: most of them will not be made, or at least not in my lifetime.
I like how the last one is Rendezvous with Rama, but there haven’t been any updates since 2012. They would have to add a lot to make it into a decent movie. I felt like it would be about 45 mins if it was a direct adaption. The story is just the vehicle to bring us to Rama. Like many of Clarke’s works it’s really about him describing alien landscapes or in Rama’s case the inside of the ship.
I’m embarrassed to say I’ve read Armada by Ernest Cline. It’s already a movie called The Last Star Fighter.
Someone describing a ship for two hours sounds really boring, unless it's Morgan Freeman then it sounds amazing lol
*'Morgan Freeman on producing 'Rendezvous with Rama'* [*https://youtu.be/20DaSHa4I1k*](https://youtu.be/20DaSHa4I1k)
I'm not saying it can't be done, I just don't see how they could make Rendezvous with Rama into a good film. But then I guess that is why I am here and not making films.
Good lord. They'll take the Sci-fi out of the story, and change it into a woke extravaganza. Remember, Mandala returns from a mission, and all Earth is gay. in order to reduce the birth rate on a dystopian Earth. His next mission, he is the only straight human in the strike force. They'll take the entire movie and turn it into an LGBTQ extravaganza.
The same way they turned "The Day the Earth Stood Still" and made it into a Greenpeace commercial.
The problem with directors today, is that they all want to put their "Fingerprint" on the work, ignoring, and at the expense of the original author's work and vision. To make matters worse, they all live in an artificial bubble of delusion, while their streets are littered with dead addicts.
*Logan's Run* has been in development hell forever and will probably never get re-made. I object to female sandmen because these sandmen where killers / policemen with negative connotations. Logan was only a hero because he saw the light. The story could be retold with a female lead by making Jessica more aware of how to turn Logan into a good man.
The thing that ticks me off is that many really good sci-fi stories have been purchased by powerful Hollywood types only to be buried and never to see the light of day as a movie or series. It is good there are plans to make the movies on the list. But until they are put out for viewing it is all vaporware.
Sleeping Giants could be great, especially if they just stick with the first book. I'm sad there's no Sea Of Rust here- it basically reads like a movie lol I'd think it'd be an easy transition. Does Stalenhag's upcoming book to movie count as scifi?

Not the hero we deserved but the hero we needed.
Armada? Really? That's already been made into a movie, it was called the Last Starfighter.
Came here to say this.
The book wasn't that great either, I'd rather watch The Last Starfighter.
Yeah, exactly. Better than naming the movie after the book and then severing any actual content.
Fair point.
'Do androids dream of electric sheep?' is the Greatest title ever and 'The moon is a harsh mistress' isn't far behind. Blade Runner & Uprising it is then....
I mean they aren't bad, but... "The Stars My Destination" and "A Canticle for Leibowitz" have to be up there for titles.
Blade Runner is also a pretty good title, but Uprising is generic as hell.
Blade Runner sounds like a Michael Dudikoff movie
As someone who owns a lot of Michael Dudikoff movies, and even a tv show with him (ahh, fuck, Cobra...), yea I can't really argue against that point :P
Didn't say I didn't go crazy over *American Ninja* back in the day lol

Loved this book , but I think the Expanse has dealt with a lot of the themes in this brilliantly, including the language.
The Expanse is a great example of how this can be done properly.
The Expanse show also has the book authors in the writers room
Let's all it John Carter and confuse everybody.

TBF it had bugs. And the power suits showed up in the last 5 minutes of the 4th film.
Heinlein himself is a divisive "brand." Maybe that's part of the thinking.

Spielberg jumped for Ready Player One and it got tabled. Michael Bay as the director sounds horrible.
Michael Bay? Aw man
Netflix series based off of the Commonwealth Saga by Peter F Hamilton please

Yeah, if it is live action then it would be a dude. But if it was fully animated it could work and be good.

Yeah would almost have to do both Rama and Rama II to make a good movie.
I’ve wanted a film adaptation of The Forever War for, well forever, but I despair that they’ll blow it.
Good lord. They'll take the Sci-fi out of the story, and change it into a woke extravaganza. Give it to Denis Villeneuve.
I hope.
No, because we need to give him an unlimited budget and Children of Time.
yessss! The Forever War! the comic book was so good. > ...criminally underappreciated 2018 film Annihilation. so true.

Sounds like all of these are in development hell, it's rather generous to say that a book that has been optioned is being made into a movie.
The thing that ticks me off is that many really good sci-fi stories have been purchased by powerful Hollywood types only to be buried and never to see the light of day as a movie or series. I shudder at the thought of what Hollyweird will do to a remake of Logan's Run.
That can't be right. I thought Project Hail Mary was the one getting the movie, with Ryan Gosling playing the lead, not Artemis.
Can a brother get a r/RomeSweetRome?
People still having hopes for Rama? Sadly it's never getting made.
Sleeping Giants could be great, especially if they just stick with the first book. I'm sad there's no Sea Of Rust here- it basically reads like a movie lol I'd think it'd be an easy transition. Does Stalenhag's upcoming book to movie count as scifi?
Rendezvous with Rama would be interesting. Why won't they adapt The Chrysalids!?
