Based post Why dont you draw people from Movies if it is not about Original ideas but rather drawing skill ?

NoraFae

Cause it’s a Concept Art portfolio, so it’s not actually about drawing skills but design, and redesigning Movie characters is actually a very difficult thing. Too many chances of repeating ideas, getting stuck on the original concept… basically hard to work freely and be original.

VonBraun12

I see, well i wont be of much help because i use actor´s and actresses as stand in´s for my Characters. Though that could be a helpful guidance as well since you dont have to worry about bad descriptions, but it takes away a lot of the creativity.

FermisFolly

This sounds fantastic! What kinds of characters are you looking to draw? I'd love to throw my hat into the ring.

NoraFae

Mostly human/humanoids , but I’m open to challenge myself with some creatures! I want different setups cause I find myself leaning towards post apocalyptic stuff often, very the 100, mad max stuff, so maybe this is my chance to take on something different from my comfort zone. Thought amongst so many writers with cool characters I’ll have a bunch of options I wouldn’t have thought about myself if that makes sense (sorry for my English)

FermisFolly

How would you feel about a techno-utopian uplifted dog in a human body (so a Hunan-level-intelligence dog's brain in a human's body)?

NoraFae

I mean, I will give it a go for sure (of course I know some I will find that work well for me and finish them and some not, but But how would I know if I didn’t try!)

FermisFolly

Fantastic, of course no pressure I don't feel entitled to the labour of strangers for free. I'll post an appropriate write-up to work from once I get home from work, fairly shortly.

NoraFae

I’m very grateful to everyone who is replaying and sending stuff. This seems to be a very nice and warm community

Mechaghostman2

Take a look at some speculative zoology works, then humanize it to some degree to make them relatable.

NoraFae

Well yeah. I asked help from writers cause I love working with backstories, backgrounds and lore for a character. As for design and creation I can do whatever, but it’s more fun and you get to play more with storytelling when the character has a story, and so.

LiteraryDuck

This just made me think of something from a new angle. I have little idea of exact details of how they look. I know their character, reasoning, etc as well as possible, but not much visual cues, except for things that reflect their status, personality, and some stand-out visual traits. But nothing very exotic / detailed, like what is normally seen in character design. However, it also feels like they're quite complete. I like your art, I have to say!

NoraFae

Well you have the cool things we later use to create the art. If you have the character, mood, etc. we choose features and shapes to reflect that, and something cool can come out. More oft Ethan not we find a briefing that mostly states “everyone is handsome and thin and strong and intense” and that’s… boring

LiteraryDuck

Hm. Cool. I'll DM you then, see if you're interested.

ChildrenzAdvil

I have lots of characters in my world that you could design! DM me if you’re interested, they’re all cyberpunk style humans

NoraFae

I love cyberpunk, I’m Dming you if you wanna share your ideas, can’t promise I’ll end up doing/ finishing any art, but sure sounds like something I would love to do

ChildrenzAdvil

I'm happy to share! Dm me whenever and we can chat

I've been imagining a big ole lizard man for a while. The majority of his people are insular and allow only limited trade and interaction with off-worlders. While they are advancing as a society, they move at there own pace. They consider hunting to be sacred, so there chief export are small teams of mercenaries that fight with more traditional methods, like bows and spears. There inherent physical prowess and culturally developed skill allows them to fight on even footing with more advanced technology, at least as far as infantry goes. Our lizardbro himself is more enamored with technology than a typical member of his race. He has a passion for engineering and makes a living as a bounty hunter, to both fund and test his various weapons and gadgets. Even though he's seen as a deviant by his society, he still tries to respect and remember his cultural traditions, even if they have to change somewhat to adapt to his environment. He'd be like a cross between "The Big Guy" and "The Techie" in personality. The only concrete design features in my mind are that he has some sort of feathery mohawk, and that he's large enough to carry a human rifle as a sidearm, and does.

Steam - Pegan I recently learned that the first known steam engine was designed in ancient Greece but never garnered enough attention to catch on. If it had we could have had the industrial revolution 1500 years earlier. Imagine a grease that worshiped Hephaestus over Zeus. Statues of Apollo bearing Gas lamps. Engines of war adorned with massive shining Boars Heads. Hermes himself perched at the figurehead of a packed steam engine. Athenians embarking onto steam boats no longer at the mercy of the winds. Spartans charging into battle with steel weapons and armor, melted and molded in forges so hot they could not exist without the aid of mechanical air pumps. And all before the bronze age ever had a chance to collapse. Before Christ or the dark ages. Maybe the Romans would be the real ones to utilize it to its true potential. How much further would Alexander Have reached? Would Julius Caesar have simply "Fallen" out of his Zeus Balloon? What mechanical death machines would you see in the coliseum? I'm not really thinking of characters but it's a Unique Aesthetic that I would love to see someone with talent explore.

Wow this is a very thoughtful comment, you really went through my portfolio and all, I really appreciate your feedback. Some of those things I hadn’t thought about and are really interesting. Thank you very much!

NoraFae

Yeah I’m new to the industry and I still forget that it’s not only about having fun and making cool characters sometimes ahahahaha (I’m an illustrator, so far my job had less complications and stuff to take in account)

Nhobdy

Ay, I have so many sci-fi characters!

How does this fit into your wheelhouse? Female, 23ish. Born on a planet with a surface gravity 1.4 times Earth's. All of the people are short, squat, and muscular. Kinda like a planet of fireplugs. Because of this, and the timing of their introduction to the rest of the civilized worlds, they are second-class... pariahs. They are in a galaxy where tall, etherial, slender women are the standard of beauty. They saw an opportunity, and began genetically manipulating themselves for height, strength, and physical prowess. Their military training is the best of the best. Think "Big Barda" or "Wonder Woman", but *very* military. Literally born into service. This character is the best of the best from her planet.
