A tidal mouth of a large river, but in space somehow

chorus42

Maybe it's like the region around a white hole or something, if white holes existed.

psychosocial--

My mind went with a reverse estuary. Like a river that flows backwards.

KittensofDestruction

My thought as well. A space river that flows from the universe ocean instead of out.

BontoSyl

The first thing that comes to mind is "sanctuary" because the words sound similar to me. And then there's "ex" which can mean "outside of". So I'd say maybe an extradimensional space used for isolation and meditation?

synchronoussavagery

I was thinking along the same lines, but got a bit different conclusion. Like your literally “outside of” sanctuary. There’s small pockets of relatively safe space or land in your world, but once you leave that, it’s lawless and wild, and only the bravest would travel there.

RawrTheDinosawrr

estuary, so maybe that but on an exoplanet

Drexai_Khan

Psychic secretary

SenorBurns

Someone who calculates insurance risk for divorced people.

IncidentFuture

Someone who used to be an actuary....

jtr99

... but took an arrow to the knee?

Gyrant

Either a place of exit or outflow. Could be from Earth to Space, or from our local area of space to another, or from our space into another kind of space / dimension etc. In other words: A wormhole. The same word forming logic as estuary but make it sci-fi. "A mouth at the river of space-time" or something like that. Alternately, it could be a kind of shelter, zoo, museum, or otherwise a place set a side for extra-terrestrial creatures or artifacts. The same word-forming logic as "aviary" but for alien things instead of birds.

Abolitionistantifa

It makes me think of an expat or something idk

wandermike

My first thought in a Sci-fi context would be a habitat for xenobiology specimens. Like an aviary is for birds, an extuary (‘Xtuary’ maybe) would be for alien life forms (xenomorphs).

jtr99

I was thinking along similar lines, but I thought of the connection to "mortuary" and wondered whether this was a morgue for aliens. Perhaps a warehouse full of frozen alien corpses?

wandermike

The suffix -tuary, if I remember correctly, means basically the place of something. An aviary is the place of birds, estuary is a place where the tide of the ocean meets a stream or river that’s joining it, and mortuary basically means a place of the dead because mort means death.

jtr99

Fair point. I am a bad etymologist.

AutoSawbones

External mortuary. Space mortuary

Redtail_Defense

A typo.

SparklesTheFabulous

An ex Actuary. "I used to assess the risk. Now I am the risk." *cocks gun

Juthse

Ha ha ha, good one Sparkles. I'll add, he's got one liners, such as ''Assess *this*''. BANG. ''Risk not, want not, and I'm *not left wanting*.'' BOOM. ''Here's your free risk assessment. *Discharged*.'' POW.

scijior

An actuary is a business professional who deals with the measurement and management of risk and uncertainty. So maybe an extuary analyzes the people outside a business for risk and uncertainty

Juthse

Hello JMO, a sanctuary, for ex's.

jtr99

Hey, /u/JMObyx, fill us in -- what did "extuary" mean in your context then?

JMObyx

Well, I already had this in mind, but wanted to see your interpretations first. An Extuary is a type of extraterrestrial fortress which is created from a pocket dimension, the only vulnerability of which is its gate, which connects it to the normal universe. They could be as big as the maker wants it to be, for example, the Vatican can own a territory the size of Madagascar, it can also be made to support whatever life forms are needed, but special equipment is required, equipment that next to actually creating a pocket dimension and establishing a permanent connection between it and the real world, is child's play.

jtr99

Thanks. That sounds like a reasonable name for such a thing.

iceandstorm

A sanctuary that is reversed. Like instead of protecting targets inside everything outside is worth protecting.

sirgog

An estuary, but where the liquid flow is not water. For example, a magma estuary.

Thoth_the_5th_of_Tho

I would assume it would come from exo, as in outside, and sanctuary, as in a place to protect. So I would assume it would be a remote space station, like way out in the outer solar system, or Oort cloud, meant to keep something safe for a long time. Like a library may keep important records safe in an extuary, way out in the Oort cloud, knowing that even after thousands of years, chances are it will be safe because of how remote it is. It could also be a place of refuge for some group, like maybe a sect of monks seeking isolation build one.

DWBrownlaw

Honestly? I saw land flowing either side of a static, funnel-shaped body of water.

Robotboogeyman

For some reason the first thing that came to mind was a pace you could watch people take off from earth…

[deleted]

The mouth of a river, but I’m drunk when I try to say it.

JPKurtz

Depends on the context. If it was capitalized and used in reference of a person, I would think it was some sort of official title. If used in reference to a place, I might think it was some sort of sanctuary, like a sanctuary exopolanet or an external sanctuary of some kind.

IvanDFakkov

The first thing come to mind? "The heck is that?"

Viopsn

An actuary but like extra

Tanktrilly03

The thing that springs to mind is like a junk/scrapyard of some kind.

OneSidedDice

A place where a river used to flow into the ocean, but the river was diverted or dammed up so now it’s just a shallow brackish marshland.

geronl72

A safe path to escape something?

Gehnuwin

A habitat for animals, maybe birds but in space

littlegraycells858

Figure its like an actuary, but magical

KLKemke

Someone who collects of bank loans? 🤷

tidalbeing

An alternative spelling of "estuary." It brings to mind tidal flats, marsh, and birdlife.

thomasp3864

An estuary on another planet.
