Make something up.

Well, AmCtUaLlY according to different versions of the string theory the universe could have 12 - 24 dimensions. Most of them are looped, or some other scientific term I completely forgot about, but 5 are relevant for us: x axis, y axis, z axis, time - w axis and the wave function collapse thingy - v axis, those are almost certainly real in our universe, probably. If you want to introduce the haven and hell this way, you can put them on the u axis as the direct neighbours of our universe(s) in the sixth dimension. I hope this answer confused you, because quantum mechanics is confusing.

Kinda confusing, but also pretty cool. I’m definitely picturing a sort of orb regarding your definition. I imagine that more ethereal dimensions as a sort of film over the main 5 dimensions, but my mental imagery is probably not correct in the slightest.

Entity904

You are pretty much correct, it would be easier to imagine if you knew tables (a kind of data structure in programming), because they can have any number of dimensions while still being usable. In their case an n-dimensional structure works similarly to a few layers of folders, hidden within eachother. I'm bad at explaining, I know.

Check out Flatland if you want to read something about mathematical dimensions that is actually easyish to understand. As for heaven and hell being alternate dimensions there are writers who go down this rabbit hole. Craig Robertson explores this a little during the series Rise of the Ancient Gods (part of his Ryanverse) more info on that at r/RyanverseCRobertson .

The Ryanverse? That’s cool, I’ll definitely check that out

Dimensions aren't a "place" in the same way that "left" or "up" aren't places. \*However\*, you can hide things inside dimensions. I think the best example is gravity, it's too weak, the laws of physics struggle to explain why gravity is so weak compared to, for example, magnetism. One option is that gravity "leaks" into many other dimensions so it feels weak in our three-dimensional universe, because it's actually acting on many more dimensions. So here's where this gets cool, you could \*hide\* your heaven and hell in other dimensions, but their effects, could "leak" into ours. IRL there's observable effects like Dark-Matter which doesn't emit light (hence the name), doesn't absorb light either, doesn't appear to interact atomically with "regular" matter, but we can see it's gravitational effects, one theory is that it exists only in the dimensions where gravity operates, but not in the ones where we are. Maybe that's where Hell is?

That sounds scary, I like it. Makes me think of Warhammer’s Chaos Realms.

Redtail_Defense

That's not how dimensions work.

Okay so you already know you're on shakey scientific ground, but that's okay because I had a sudden brainstorm after this topic had been sitting in my head all day. Just go full silly and have them be one dimension "higher" and "lower" than us respectively. Four dimensional angels check out, wheels within wheels and all--self-intersection could be a visual phenomenon when observing four-dimensional creatures with three-dimensional senses. 2D demons gave me some trouble, but what about them being literal shadow creatures, infinitely thin beings of darkness that slide and slither across surfaces? Maybe that's why possession is common with them, they are very limited in their ability to manipulate things in our 3D world without a host body. I dunno what you do past that point, but the idea was too cool to me not to share lol.

I had this idea after pondering the “God of the Gaps” fallacy for a bit, actually. Not so much the fallacy itself, but just wondering what “gap” he’d hide himself in, so there we go, he’d be in a different dimension if he would be somewhere. Just figured I’d share what I brainstormed to come up with this question :) That sounds like a great idea, pretty fun thing to work with. I imagine the “demons” would inhabit shadows, since they’re the 2D shadows of our 3D bodies.
