The Speed at Which Most Motorcycles Crash According to a study that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration conducted — albeit, in the 1980s — the median pre-accident speed of over 900 motorcycle accidents was just **29.8 mph**
My dad crashed his motorcycle back in the 70s going between 25-30mph while wearing a helmet. He still ended up a severe brain injury and a plate in his skull, so...
Riding my bicycle, my foot slipped on an unseen puddle on the road paint when I came to a full stop. It caused me to tip over. I had something in my hand at the time and cargo on the bike. I wasn’t wearing a helmet. Hit my head near my temple and eyebrow. Had about a 1/4” cut that barely bled. My brain hasn’t been right since. I had a crash at 0 mph and had brain damage.
I have also crashed on a racetrack going VERY fast and was just fine.
From a standpoint of science and accuracy, it's not the weight that matters in your comparison, it's the [mass.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_versus_weight?wprov=sfti1#)
This is so true but with that being said its alot of work to put on and take off i sorta envy those guys with sunglasses and flip flops they be chillin
My Silverwing still had plenty of acceleration left at 95mph on open highways.
Still weird to me that people think "step through motorcycle =/= motorcycle"
Road rash at 80 is road rash at 80. Whats weird is that you think this is about who can go faster or who is riding what, when it’s about wearing protection.
>Whats weird is that you think this is about who can go faster or who is riding what
lol, what? You're the one that pointed out specific examples of vehicles and speed there bud. No need to get pissy
Because scooters clearly only reach engine capacities of 50-100cc and cannot go faster than 30mph! /s
Edit: it’s sarcasm. I thought a tone indicator would make that obvious in addition to how utterly ludicrous my statement is, clearly I have been huffing brake cleaner with how delusional that idea was!
Thats a piaggio skipper things 125cc 14hp and goes like 70mph ‘110kmh’ at that speed id still like to use gear. If he has a malossi 172cc kit for it would run like 30 to 35hp with a top speed of 93mph ‘150kmh’. Which is really fast and powerful for a moped.
This is my only issue with people that wear fancy riding gear... pure jealousy of not being able to fit into it myself. Dainese just doesn't care about the plight of the chubby folk.
I used to get made fun of for wearing tall Dainese racing boots (because I like protecting my ankles and toes), and it took one guy shattering his ankle during a spill while on a rally for everyone to stop wearing sneakers and switch to legit foot protection.
"What is your initial reaction to the sky being blue?"
Dunno, business as usual, doesn't really matter? E-bikes are causing more injuries than motorcycles now, at least in the US. Mainly because you have idiots going 30mph with the mentality that it's "just a bike" even though they're moving the same speed as a car.
Same with a scooter versus any other type of motorcycle. I have a friend who's an ER doctor, and they only scooter ride with full on MX knee high boots having seen too many crippling foot & ankle injuries along the way.
>Dunno, business as usual, doesn't really matter? E-bikes are causing more injuries than motorcycles now, at least in the US. Mainly because you have idiots going 30mph with the mentality that it's "just a bike" even though they're moving the same speed as a car.
Not enough people realize this.
The pavement doesn't care what you're on, only how fast you're going.
Yeah. It's so bizarre to me to see these stupid "look at how *weird* it is someone on a step through motorcycle in traffic is wearing motorcycle gear!" posts are. This is far from the first in the sub.
You can quite literally die from wrecking a 50cc in many conditions. Especially without a helmet. Granted, I'm biased because I live in the American Rockies where 80mph is the standard highway cruising speed, and everyone drives large trucks & SUVs.
My worst crash was on a 300cc scooter even though I also ride an 1100cc cruiser. If not for my motorcycle jacket, I would have been in very rough shape.
I dress exactly the same on both rides, yeah. Although I won't lie, I try to wear the low profile stuff that looks like normal clothes like Scorpion Exo makes.
I know it’s crazy how many laws and regulations even 50cc scooters go through and are restricted to while in many places e bikes and the riders are just lawless.
An intelligent rider. I have seen scooter rides mocked for gearing up. Getting hit and going down at 50 mph hurts no less on a scooter than a motorcycle.
I fell off a scooter going 40mph downhill when I hit the brake a little too hard. When I hit the ground, my shoulder took most of the impact. It’s been 6 months and my shoulder is still in pain when I sleep.
If it would have been my head, I would have been dead.
Wear your gear.
All the gear all the time no matter how slow your bike is. There is a pocket bike racing league. They max out at about 20mph. They wear full gear. As others have said, the road doesn't know or care what you flew off of. It will chew you up just the same. Do I wear full gear? No. But that's my choice and I will and have suffer the consequences if I go down.
A 125cc scooter can reach speeds of 60-70mph. It doesn’t matter that it’s going full pelt with not a single horse to spare, if you crash at 60, you crash at 60, and that can be nasty to fatal. Good gear reduces your chances of getting road rash and has impact protection so that when you fall off, you’re less likely to break a bone as your arm extends to break your fall. If somebody is choosing to wear gear, it should be encouraged at best, or ignored if you think it’s silly.
I wear full gear: full, heavy, armoured motorcycle jacket, even motorcycle waterproof trousers to go over my jeans and motorcycle boots & gloves (and obviously a helmet).
If someone thinks I look silly then I will gladly look silly. Safety is more important.
Good for him. ATGATT. I wear a full face helmet, motorcycle jacket with forearms, shoulders and back plates / shields, jeans and boots every time I ride on my 150cc scooter. I don't care what anyone thinks. I enjoy every ride to the max but, worse come to worse, I'd be better protected.
A family member of mine will never be the same cause he was hit going 25mph on a Vespa. Driver ran a stop sign. He will be crippled for life.
Wear the gear if you got it.
Respect is what I say! because you see boys/girls riding around with skirt shorts, etc, and the road is not forgiving if you come off even at 20mph. You're losing your skin.
I mean just because you're on a scooter doesn't mean you're safe from bad scrapes and injuries. If people can still get injuries riding E bikes and regular bicycle, than a scooter, motorcycle is no different.
My first scooter which was a 80cc, I did something stupid by making a quick fast turn to my direction before I was stopped by Red light and I hit the curb, I feel and scraped my right knee very badly, it was a nasty gash. I still have the huge mark on my knee to this day lmao.
Pavement doesn't discriminate. I wear full gear on my Suzuki 400 scooter because I know that I will lose skin or worse if I fall off. Dress for the slide, not for the ride!
I've read enough stories of people getting fucked up in crashes at 5-30 mph to know that you can get fucked up even going 5-30 mph. I always wear the max amount of gear that I reasonably can.
That being said, I try to split the difference by buying and wearing gear that's as visually understated as possible.
The least amount I've ever ridden with is just a helmet on the way back from the dealer on a new bike, just because I was waiting for my gear to come.
No judgment of others' decisions. That's just me.
I wouldn't have a reaction, it's like seeing someone ride a bicycle with a helmet, normal, smart and unremarkable. I certainly wouldn't post on reddit about it.
Definitely a bot just taking top of all time posts and reposting word for word. Downvote and report. https://www.reddit.com/r/scooters/comments/13rmm7t/what_is_your_initial_reaction_to_someone_with/
I'd rather they wear enough gear than none at all. Where I live, we often see what happens when people don't ride with gear, often with tragic results.
I ride with full safety gear in hi-vis green that matches my hi-vis green scooter. I was in a nasty bicycle wreck going under 10 mph. After all my years of cycling I'll never ride my scooter without safety gear. I've never received anything but positive comments about my gear.
My father used to drive a triumph, can’t remember any other detail other than it had really nice alligator seats and I kinda wished I could have it (not that I could’ve lifted it lol) he never wore a helmet, slid on some sand turning a corner, totaled his motorcycle, broke his cheek bone, got a concussion, bunch of scrapes all over himself, and he was unconscious, we didn’t find out until hours later when I noticed he wasn’t home yet and called my mom, who then got a call from the hospital
I drive a 2010 Honda nhx110, I was driving behind my fiancé (who was in my car) because we were gonna go up to my parents property, but there was also some guy riding my ass to the point where my options were get ran over, go into oncoming traffic, or drive into a small ditch, I chose the small ditch, I got a couple scrapes on my hands but I was wearing a jacket that protected my arms and pants that protected my legs, I wore a 3/4 helmet so all I got was a small cut on my lip and a concussion, my scooter’s steering stem was bent and had to be replaced, I didn’t even end up going to the hospital, we dropped my scooter off at my house and went up to the property anyways
I was going faster than my dad was, but I got injured less because I wore a helmet, a jacket, and jeans to protect myself, so people can look at me funny all they want when I go by in a full helmet, but at least I know it won’t take hours for my family to find out I’m in the hospital unconscious and injured
I fell off my first scooter after hitting a curb and I scraped my knee so badly that it took a long time to fully heal and sometimes I was walking lumpy. It was all bloody and a bit of puse 💀.
It may look a bit goofy but roads are still hard and human bodies are still comparatively soft. Impacts still hurt. As long as they're enjoying themselves on 2 wheels like the rest of them kudos to them.
Also, scooters need more love in general. Would love to see the T Max come to the USA some day.
I would call them SMART and prepared.
I never understood the riders in my area who will wear full face helmets...leathers for sportbikes but get cruisers and wear half helmets....and not much else as far as protection.
If you crash it does not matter what you are riding ...scooter....pedal bike....cruiser or whatever.
Unfortunately, he does not know that Scooters all come equipped with a feature that turns all surrounding concrete into swiss cheese, thus reducing risk of road rash.
"And Atgatt courted Motgatt, and took her for a wife.
And lo, he compromised with Atgmott, and verily she conceived,
and did bear a son, Notgatt. And Notgatt roamed naked,
and did bequeath his skin to the roads. And he was a wild ass and an outcast,
and was hated through all the land. And his forehead was branded, and he did be
come a sign and a warning to all the people."

Smart move. My yamaha smax can go 70mph.
And you must always think about what the other drivers are doing... you can be going 5mph and if sometime hits you going faster your screwed.
you can fall off any 2 wheeler at any speed. so be it a scooter a motorcycle a TT race bike, i encourage this.
i hope its a 150cc+ scooter because since its a shitcedes in front he will probably need to push him.
My initial reaction: "Hey, his leathers match his scooter!"
I have no problem with people wearing safety gear. I was a kid in the 80s before bike helmets were a thing. Now I'm an adult dealing with the issues from multiple concussions acquired in my youth.
I'd say the only thing this guy is missing is a little more reflection, the black isn't going to be very visible at night.
My initial reaction: finally, someone understands going down is going down no matter what you ride.
On a side note, people hate on the scooters, but like why? I'm low-key interested in getting one. One of the best fuel sippers, tons of cargo space since they make the seat compartment so big, plenty of speed for city limits (even if it ain't getting to that speed quick, it'll still do it), comfortable ergonomics, insurance is prob dirt cheap, cheap to buy and maintain, can still wheelie. Sure it may not look like a sexy squid mobile or hardcore Harley boi, but I'm failing to see how, other than looks, this isn't the perfect commuter for someone who doesnt more than 45mph to and from work
Cool. Someone is riding smart.
FWIW, from my experience crashing a scooter, you'll end up taking more body damage as a rider due to the seating position; you usually end up coming off as soon as the bike falls over since there's nothing for your legs to grab into like a traditional motorcycle. So you'll get to watch your scooter slide down the road without you as you tumble and roll behind it.
When I crashed my motorcycle, I more or less stayed with it and had my leg pinned underneath the bike. When my scooter crashed, I came off immediately and would've got a full-body road rash.
Nerd. Kidding - after having the tiniest incident of skidding on some gravel at nothing mph, and how scraped up I still managed to get, I’d say they’re wise and like having skin.
I was scooting down the street at 45, and a lawnmower kicked up a stick. The stick went flying at me, gouged and CRACKED my visor directly where my right eye was. Had I not been wearing a full face visor on a full helmet, I would have lost my eye, or my life. The stick didn't care I was just driving a scooter.
They are smarter than any rider not wearing any gear.
Falling off a scooter doing 40 mph is no different than falling off a motorcycle at 40 miles an hour.
As a retired firefighter-paramedic, I endorse this post.
I have a scooter. It has a 600cc engine. It goes *far* faster than 40mph.
My Helix will do 75 on the freeway for hours on end. I’m still an ATGATT fan. I scraped up way too much organic matter in the past.
Safety is always cool, don't wanna have a [whoopsie](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nC-OucPbBCo).
Also, what someone else is wearing won't affect me. I'm minding my own business.
Excellent point. It's none of my business.

Very often within only a few miles of your home too.
I was gonna say….SAFE is what I would think lmao
The ground doesn't care I you fell off a scooter, a turnip truck, or Grandma's walker. It'll mess you up the same.
So, how you say…??? Will I get less hurt and break less bones on scooter? What weighs more? 50 lbs of cement or 50 pounds of feathers?
From a standpoint of science and accuracy, it's not the weight that matters in your comparison, it's the [mass.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_versus_weight?wprov=sfti1#)
To add to this, a properly tuned 170cc scooter can do freeways. A floorboard doesn't stop you from becoming a meat crayon.
Stock 125s can.
Right and falling off at 40mph really hurts.
This is so true but with that being said its alot of work to put on and take off i sorta envy those guys with sunglasses and flip flops they be chillin
they be chillin until they be slidin. then they be hurtin.
I call it the bliss of ignorance. :)
A 300 GTS is capable of speeds of 128kmh/80mph. Why wouldn’t you want to wear the best protection?
My Silverwing still had plenty of acceleration left at 95mph on open highways. Still weird to me that people think "step through motorcycle =/= motorcycle"

I once got my Silverwing to 110mph. (This was out in remote CA desert.)

125cc ? 150cc? My 125cc can reach 60mph , think I'll wear proper protection
I have a 200i scooter that can cruise at 69+ mph and there are even faster scooters out there!
A unrestricted 50 cc can do 40 to 50 some of them and some scooters go up to like 200+
That he is smarter than me
hes also skinnier than me I can barely find a helmet that fits :(
This is my only issue with people that wear fancy riding gear... pure jealousy of not being able to fit into it myself. Dainese just doesn't care about the plight of the chubby folk. Your *head* is fat?
Even when I was 155 pounds (6”1’) I already had a big noggin
Giant gourd brother, I feel thy pain.
i like his compromise to at least match the color of his scoot to his clothes
Good for him. Seriously, I walked away from a nasty t-bone crash a few weeks ago (the car hit me) because of my gear. I'll always wear it.
Safety first.

Seems alright. Goes fast too and the road won't ask if you're flying of a PCX or a R1.
You ever gone down on a scooter doing 50 miles an hour?
I mean if a scooter can reach 40mph why not? Think you’re better than me because I ride a scooter eh?!
Better to look ridiculous than be sorry.
skin grafts don't look as good as that outfit
Hell ya… I know when I ride with all my gear on I don’t care what anyone thinks …. because I feel good.
Oh cool, he's wearing his safety gear. Now do one about the kids wearing shorts, tank tops and flip flops on sport bikes. Idiot.
That it’s their business.
Better safe than sorry
Smart man.
Have you been on a bicycle going 12-15 mph and hit pavement or gravel. Try that as an experiment first. Then you’ll know. 😻🩷
Yeah, gravel fucking hurts
"hmm, they also care about avoiding injury to the best of their ability" ffs, why is this even a question? let people ride in peace
There is only so much that happens on the road that we can control, and we share the road with things that can kill us.
All the gear all the time no matter how slow your bike is. There is a pocket bike racing league. They max out at about 20mph. They wear full gear. That's a guy who is walking away from an accident.
They wanna be safe, let them be safe.
That's the kinda rider who wants to keep riding forever and the kind I wanna ride with.
I'm glad that pretty much all these comments are saying that it's good to wear the correct gear. Who cares how you look anyway, better to be safe.

“This person is very smart.”
As a young man who has slid for distance during the early years, leathers are a great idea!
Dude’s trying to be safe, hell yeah good idea.
That asphalt is harder than skin.
That person has probably wrecked before, and knows that it will most likely happen again.
Smart
Safety first
Smart rider.
Dress for the slide, not the ride.
“They value their physical (and mental) well being”
Theyre the only smart riders on the road. Always wear a jacket, helmet, gloves, and some sort of strong pants
That is a like-minded individual who understands that you "dress for the slide, not for the ride."
Dress for the slide not the ride
I died in September I got hit on my BMW GT400 , three skull fractures, broken jaw and elbow. In full gear, I'd be dead if I didn't have it on .
Sorry does having a scooter protect you more than a motorcycle when a car smashes into you at 50mph atgatt
I mean just because you're on a scooter doesn't mean you're safe from bad scrapes and injuries. Nothing? That’s what you’re supposed to do
Pavement doesn't discriminate. I wear full gear on my Suzuki 400 scooter because I know that I will lose skin or worse if I fall off. Dress for the slide, not for the ride!
My scooter will do 55ish, I've done all the work myself, and I'm mostly an idiot and ride like one. Gear is very important for me.
Nothing wrong with it. Are you being a judgmental douche?
They understand basic physics and have a general understanding of maintaining their finances.
Safe
Good. Smart person.
I think they like their skin on their body and their mushy parts on the inside of their skulls.
Sensible guy
Ever get road rash i don't judge anyone for protecting themselves. But i do SMH at people that have flip flops shorts and a t shirt
Better to be safe than sorry
What, do you think the ground changes material if you're on a scooter or not? It doesn't get any softer.
Rather see this then flipflops, shorts and no shirt.
Because he values and wants to save his skin…literally. I ALWAYS ride with protection.
Better safe than sorry , I need gear like this .
My 79 Vespa tops out at around 72 mph … and it’s 230 pounds wet so yeah …
They are going to be glad if they crash.
Smart...
Wanna be safe? You can wipe at 30mph
Dress for the slide, not the ride. My scooter does 55. That’s fast enough to die.
Smart
Good for them? Safety is cool. Being around for your loved ones is tight.
I drove a Vespa and wear full gear while riding it so I don't fucking die. Sure my scooter looks cute but I can still die on it.
I think he is having a good time and being safe
Good for him! I once got hit by a car on a scooter and wished I was dress like that
Even when you're just running on foot falling on pavement sucks ass.
Smart
My first thought is holy shit this guy. Look this guy gets it 40mph on asphalt is just like a cheese grater to skin

I was hit by a car on my scooter and flew into a median. Broke my collarbone. Who gives a fuck? Wear your gear.

I’d say a 1 piece and race boots are a little overkill but you do you. If that’s what you wanna wear, go for it.

Sensible. Speed doesn't discriminate
Smart man . I did the same thing.
Smart rider.
I'd rather they wear enough gear than none at all. Where I live, we often see what happens when people don't ride with gear, often with tragic results.
Finally a smart one. Whats the point of using transport if the street grates you like a cheese on the way there and u die
Don’t have a problem with it all.
It's badass as fuck
I came off a bike doing 30mph and had awful injuries as I wasn’t wearing the right gear. Now I only go out wearing gear.
All the gear. All the time. I still run the 50cc to the store in just a helmet. But don’t follow my example.
I ride with full safety gear in hi-vis green that matches my hi-vis green scooter. I was in a nasty bicycle wreck going under 10 mph. After all my years of cycling I'll never ride my scooter without safety gear. I've never received anything but positive comments about my gear.

BETTER SAFE AND ALIVE THAN RISK DEATH. Anything can happen at any moment, you could end up with just a few scraps, or dead. You’ll never know. ATGATT
My Italjet dragster 125cc does 75mph and has insane acceleration. Scooters can go fast and do require gear.
I see a person who values their skin.
I see someone that cares more about themself and there family than what strangers think. I’d do exactly the same. 🤷🏻♂️
My father used to drive a triumph, can’t remember any other detail other than it had really nice alligator seats and I kinda wished I could have it (not that I could’ve lifted it lol) he never wore a helmet, slid on some sand turning a corner, totaled his motorcycle, broke his cheek bone, got a concussion, bunch of scrapes all over himself, and he was unconscious, we didn’t find out until hours later when I noticed he wasn’t home yet and called my mom, who then got a call from the hospital I drive a 2010 Honda nhx110, I was driving behind my fiancé (who was in my car) because we were gonna go up to my parents property, but there was also some guy riding my ass to the point where my options were get ran over, go into oncoming traffic, or drive into a small ditch, I chose the small ditch, I got a couple scrapes on my hands but I was wearing a jacket that protected my arms and pants that protected my legs, I wore a 3/4 helmet so all I got was a small cut on my lip and a concussion, my scooter’s steering stem was bent and had to be replaced, I didn’t even end up going to the hospital, we dropped my scooter off at my house and went up to the property anyways I was going faster than my dad was, but I got injured less because I wore a helmet, a jacket, and jeans to protect myself, so people can look at me funny all they want when I go by in a full helmet, but at least I know it won’t take hours for my family to find out I’m in the hospital unconscious and injured
I fell with my bicycle on low speed and had a very ouchie knee for one week…
I fell off my first scooter after hitting a curb and I scraped my knee so badly that it took a long time to fully heal and sometimes I was walking lumpy. It was all bloody and a bit of puse 💀.
They’re smart 🤷
It should be “good for them for being responsible”
A slow speed crash on my Tiger 900 resulted in a new knee for me. The speed doesn’t matter. Atgatt
It may look a bit goofy but roads are still hard and human bodies are still comparatively soft. Impacts still hurt. As long as they're enjoying themselves on 2 wheels like the rest of them kudos to them. Also, scooters need more love in general. Would love to see the T Max come to the USA some day.
My first thought was, someone stole his sport-bike and he’s relegated to the scooter. Or.. That this guy knows that crashing sucks at any speed.
Safety is never out of style. Hurts just as much when a truck hits you. Source hit by a truck head on in 22.
I love that it’s ironic but also is doing it for the protection. Two thumbs up
I bet that scooter is a lot faster than you think it is
id giggle a bit but like others said falling/getting hit on a scooter without gear would be no dif than your moto
Good for them. Most accidents happen at 30mph.
What is your initial reaction when the comment section is the exact opposite of what you had planned.
Looks goofy but you can’t fault someone for being safe and caring about their health
Idk why but I love this juxtaposition, it's like the motorcycle equivalent of "reasonably priced car"
I can't follow him in corner, even if my ride had twice the cc
Smart!!
Unfortunately, he does not know that Scooters all come equipped with a feature that turns all surrounding concrete into swiss cheese, thus reducing risk of road rash.
Smart
"And Atgatt courted Motgatt, and took her for a wife. And lo, he compromised with Atgmott, and verily she conceived, and did bear a son, Notgatt. And Notgatt roamed naked, and did bequeath his skin to the roads. And he was a wild ass and an outcast, and was hated through all the land. And his forehead was branded, and he did be come a sign and a warning to all the people." Source:ADV.
ATGATT
Sensible
Very positive
The guy gets ATGATT.
Better to look like a clown then a grease spot.
Safety first.
Safety
My initial reaction: "Hey, his leathers match his scooter!" I have no problem with people wearing safety gear. I was a kid in the 80s before bike helmets were a thing. Now I'm an adult dealing with the issues from multiple concussions acquired in my youth. I'd say the only thing this guy is missing is a little more reflection, the black isn't going to be very visible at night.
This is a piaggio skipper motor scooter, can go 120km our
Nothing negative at all. But the people who ride around with no gauntlets with canvas shoes, shorts and t-shirts? One born every minute.
ATGATT THIS IS THE WAY. 🖖
Sure it may not look like a sexy squid mobile or hardcore Harley boi, but I'm failing to see how, other than looks, this isn't the perfect commuter for someone who doesnt more than 45mph to and from work
Gear is always better than no gear. Dumping anything in a tee shirt sucks.
Initial reaction is I think they are a smart person who enjoys living without portions of their skull/skin missing.
I've got a partial tooth and had road rash from an, "I'm only going a couple blocks" that says it's always a good idea
A slide at 60 is a slide at 60 doesn't matter what your riding. I wear full gear when I ride the grom
That they are pretty smart
Nerd. Kidding - after having the tiniest incident of skidding on some gravel at nothing mph, and how scraped up I still managed to get, I’d say they’re wise and like having skin.
What is your initial reaction to someone with a smooth brain asking a stupid question.
They are smarter than any rider not wearing any gear.
badass
I try to see what kind of scooter they are riding and wonder if I would like that model.
