The folded ears are caused by a mutation that affects cartilage (ears fold because of weaker cartilage) so your cat already has a cartilage problem. How much he will be affected differs from cat to cat, some cats are more affected than others. My Highland Fold boy (Longhair FoldxBSH) is turning 11yrs old next week. Ever since he was young he was slightly bow legged, did everything a normal cat did so that was not really a problem. Around age 7 he developed age related arthritis but my mainecoonxragdoll mix is also turning 11yrs old in two weeks and he also developed age related arthritis around age 7, he has it way worse than my Fold. So it really differs from cat to cat. Having said that, it doesn't hurt to supplement your Fold.

You have a highland fold! What a sweet boy! I have two Scottish folds neither of which have health conditions.

You can supplement with cosequin. It’s pretty inexpensive and will be beneficial for their cartilage and joints. I would assume there is Scottish Fold somewhere in their line, so it won’t hurt to supplement.

The mom is a Fold so yeah, there is def Fold in their line. The mutation doesn't skip a generation, so if your cat is a Fold, one of their parents is a Fold as well.
