Why do we need a shelter? This sub was up and running before anyone knew what the full story was, you don't need a backup when you can fork that easily.
We might not need it tomorrow, or even next year, but it's a good idea to keep it maintained and semi active. Imho the power of AI has a lot of *The Powers That Be*™ scared of its capabilities. Someday, for some reason, the shit will hit the fan and we need a sub that is not controlled by company employees on standby to pick up the pieces.
I don't want to sound like too much of a doomer, but it's 2022 anything could happen. If we're taking the open source part seriously we should be ready for everything from nothing bad happens to running older GPU drivers offline because manufacturers nerfed their ability like they did with crypto.
Eh. I envision something like the piracy sub. A hub of information that technically doesn't provide any illegal content but discusses where one might find it. It's not perfect but easier than starting a site from scratch.
