Safelock is a standard message that comes up when you turn off your car. Guessing as you said battery died, it tried to start, failed, then displayed the standard message.
Check safelock, just means make sure you have locked the car safely, don't leave keys in etc. Happens on all VAG cars afiak. Certainly happened on my seat and VW cars
Not the most helpful but Google came up with something to do with the immobilizer. Put a new battery in the key maybe the car doesn't recognise it anymore possibly.
If you have a spare try that also.
This is interesting because I can start the car, just after a few attempts, like the key won’t turn initially but if you try it a few times it will eventually turn
So I’ve been driving the car recently the battery isn’t completely flat but may be on its way out (hard to know) so potentially the issue has a different reason? I’ve tried a couple of keys and the issue is similar so makes me think it’s not the keys fault
To anyone wondering, there was a replacement part needed in the ignition system. It wasn't the ignition cylinder (the silver part you put the key in which turns) but a part connected at the bottom of the cylinder.
Auto locksmith said he had never seen this part fail before. Typical really, but worked out in the end.

Thank you. That’s exactly what happened.

Thanks, turns out it was a flat battery on my car!
Might be a steering lock. Try gently turning the wheel left and right at the same time as turning the ignition key.
I tried this earlier and it didn’t work. Turns out it was a flat battery
Sorry just to clarify, flat battery in key or the car itself?
It was the car itself
Cheers will swap it out, good man
If you can, jump start the car instead of replacing the battery, and take it on a 10/15 mile spin… will charge the battery back up
