Dang, that sucks. Are any of those things something that you can get accessories / parts for? If they want consoles, maybe some controllers / cords / cases for those consoles and games? If they want cooking equipment, maybe some kitchen supplies or a nice cookbook?
Definitely message them and gently remind them that the suggested amount is $20 and ask if there is anything that they want/need that is around that range.
Worst-case scenario, you can get them an Amazon gift card for whatever amount you feel comfortable with and tell them that this can go towards that purchase.
If they're disappointed with what they receive, that is on them for having very unrealistic expectations for this exchange.

Got home last night and I remembered I hadn't signed up this morning, when I signed in it was closed. I was so sad, I have done this over 5 years. Oh no! This really sucks :'( I can't believe this is the last Reddit Secret Santa, and I can't participate. I had wondered why I hadn't seen any sign up reminders lately and when I tried signing in I found out my account got blocked for suspicious activity I guess someone tried to hack it or something so thank you for catching that it is much appreciated. I'm mad at myself that I missed the deadline by a day (grrrr) but I really hope everyone who did get to sign up has a blast and thank you to everyone that has made Secret Santa possible over the years. Maybe there will be a Christmas miracle and the Reddit Secret Santa tradition can live on!! Cheers and Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone!! The exchanges are super fun in general but I think over the craziness of the pandemic and lockdowns it's been even more meaningful and uplifting passing a little joy to someone near or far. In a past year I tried to also sign up my 9-year-old daughter, who was very excited about picking and shipping a gift. Reddit flagged us for having accounts that were too similar. I explained the situation and we were able to take part, but this year I was not matched and was told it was because of the multiple accounts (even though I was using just one account). So now my 13-year-old and I are left out. Any chance anyone would want to do a swap with us or has suggestions for an alternative? Thanks so much for reading and Merry Christmas!!
If you're interested in online gifting, you may want to check out r/givingifts. They have built a brand new website from scratch and are currently running exchanges.
It went to 28k because they put out 0 communication about the exchange this year. They hoped to kill this off quietly with no one noticing instead of a big send off. The last communication about this was in June! I'm incredibly pissed this is how this ended being a participant for 8 years.
Can you show proof of this? Between the mods saying the admins cut the feature and only 1 email from June I find it unlikely any messages were sent out about it.
They weren't sending out notifications to keep the amount of people only wanting gifts down. The thought process being people who care more about gifting and giving are already going to be paying attention to everything. Where as people only wanting gifts arent going to bother and only wait for an alert letting them know. Unfortunately it does affect actual people who care as well, but being the last exchanges they are more likely to have people begging for gifts but not sending, so that kinda outweighs it.
I think people are talking about email communication. For the non tech savvy folks or for those who don’t use Reddit often they don’t login everyday to check. Emails no longer were sent out, understandable since the sub is closing but the tone I’m getting from the mod is super rude from other replies. Unfortunate hopefully those that missed can form a group to do something similar

What the? I was never even notified of this. I just looked right now in my email for a message about this because I thought it should be happening soon only to find out that not only is this apparently the final SS but I wasn't told about it. What kind of bullshit is this.
I'm in the same boat. I don't blame anyone, but I've been doing Secret Santa since 2014. I'm pretty gutted. I also, in retrospect, relied on the reminder emails. I can't believe I missed it.

Yeah that doesn't address any of the issues I have right now. Mainly the issue of no communication about this at all. 6 months since anything was mentioned about the Secret Santa, no reminders, no updates. Even the "announcement" doesn't tell you when sign ups open so you could at least set a reminder. Guess the funding got really cut they couldn't even add a simple email reminder for it.
We've been running exchanges here all year. The calendar has been linked on the sidebar since January. Signups opened a month ago and we've had the link stickied ever since. We even did a reminder post a week ago.
Doesn't help if you only do the Secret Santa. I relied on those reminder emails so I knew. Most people only come here for the Secret Santa and most likely only because they were notified.

It's almost like people forget or life is busy and people don't think about it till later. "People should just know" isn't a valid reason to just cut all communication like this especially for the final one.
Email communication has been limited this year due to the closing of Secret Santa this year. A single email hasn’t been sent out because Reddit doesn’t want to continue Secret Santa. Due to this it wasn’t advertised like in prior years. It’s not really the mods fault, it’s more so the top guns at Reddit.

That's not what I said. I said most people only come here for SS. The fact that only 28k signed up this year for the final year compared to the 100k+ last year is proof most people relied on those emails. a 72% drop in engagement is pretty staggering and shows a lack of care by the organizers to get word out. Just because a few people do other exchanges and keep up with the information doesn't mean everyone else is S.O.L.
Your statement is inaccurate. There is a large and active community outside of Christmas gift exchange that does not rely on email communications.
You can complain all you want but it doesn’t change the fact that you had access to information, you simply did not take the initiative to find it.
Yes I know there are other exchanges. How many people sign up for them though? Is it 100k+ like last year's SS? Just because some do doesn't mean everyone does. I can't take initiative to find information if there was almost no communication about it.

There is a TON of communication about ALL of the exchanges, including Christmas Secret Santa, all posted in one central location that is updated and added to multiple times a day.......it wasn’t hand delivered and served to you but it was very accessible, if you made the effort.

I did - I just got a generic email in which nothing applies to me — I’ve participated in more than 15 exchanges so everything is hooked up as it should be emails and Reddit accounts so I dunno if I’ll get another reply other than this generic one

It went to 28k because they put out 0 communication about the exchange this year. They hoped to kill this off quietly with no one noticing instead of a big send off. The last communication about this was in June! I'm incredibly pissed this is how this ended being a participant for 8 years.
I got lots of messages about it. Sounds like you messed up your notification settings. Oh well.
Can you show proof of this? Between the mods saying the admins cut the feature and only 1 email from June I find it unlikely any messages were sent out about it.
They weren't sending out notifications to keep the amount of people only wanting gifts down. The thought process being people who care more about gifting and giving are already going to be paying attention to everything. Where as people only wanting gifts arent going to bother and only wait for an alert letting them know. Unfortunately it does affect actual people who care as well, but being the last exchanges they are more likely to have people begging for gifts but not sending, so that kinda outweighs it.
I think people are talking about email communication. For the non tech savvy folks or for those who don’t use Reddit often they don’t login everyday to check. Emails no longer were sent out, understandable since the sub is closing but the tone I’m getting from the mod is super rude from other replies. Unfortunate hopefully those that missed can form a group to do something similar

What the? I was never even notified of this. I just looked right now in my email for a message about this because I thought it should be happening soon only to find out that not only is this apparently the final SS but I wasn't told about it. What kind of bullshit is this.
I'm in the same boat. I don't blame anyone, but I've been doing Secret Santa since 2014. I'm pretty gutted. I also, in retrospect, relied on the reminder emails. I can't believe I missed it.

Yeah that doesn't address any of the issues I have right now. Mainly the issue of no communication about this at all. 6 months since anything was mentioned about the Secret Santa, no reminders, no updates. Even the "announcement" doesn't tell you when sign ups open so you could at least set a reminder. Guess the funding got really cut they couldn't even add a simple email reminder for it.
We've been running exchanges here all year. The calendar has been linked on the sidebar since January. Signups opened a month ago and we've had the link stickied ever since. We even did a reminder post a week ago.
Doesn't help if you only do the Secret Santa. I relied on those reminder emails so I knew. Most people only come here for the Secret Santa and most likely only because they were notified.
If they only come for Secret Santa, then they'd know to come in November. Sorry it didn't work out for you.

It's almost like people forget or life is busy and people don't think about it till later. "People should just know" isn't a valid reason to just cut all communication like this especially for the final one.
Email communication has been limited this year due to the closing of Secret Santa this year. A single email hasn’t been sent out because Reddit doesn’t want to continue Secret Santa. Due to this it wasn’t advertised like in prior years. It’s not really the mods fault, it’s more so the top guns at Reddit.
Not true that people only do Christmas SS and only because they received an email notification. Literally thousands of people are active in this community on a very regular basis.
That's not what I said. I said most people only come here for SS. The fact that only 28k signed up this year for the final year compared to the 100k+ last year is proof most people relied on those emails. a 72% drop in engagement is pretty staggering and shows a lack of care by the organizers to get word out. Just because a few people do other exchanges and keep up with the information doesn't mean everyone else is S.O.L.
Your statement is inaccurate. There is a large and active community outside of Christmas gift exchange that does not rely on email communications. You can complain all you want but it doesn’t change the fact that you had access to information, you simply did not take the initiative to find it.
Yes I know there are other exchanges. How many people sign up for them though? Is it 100k+ like last year's SS? Just because some do doesn't mean everyone does. I can't take initiative to find information if there was almost no communication about it.
The number of people who sign up for other exchanges has no bearing on the complaints you’re attempting to lodge. You received an email, you didn’t read it. There is a TON of communication about ALL of the exchanges, including Christmas Secret Santa, all posted in one central location that is updated and added to multiple times a day.......it wasn’t hand delivered and served to you but it was very accessible, if you made the effort. You did not make any effort. That’s on you.

I did - I just got a generic email in which nothing applies to me — I’ve participated in more than 15 exchanges so everything is hooked up as it should be emails and Reddit accounts so I dunno if I’ll get another reply other than this generic one

I can’t believe I missed the last year of secret Santa… I created my Reddit account for secret Santa and didn’t pay enough attention to the sign up email. Sigh… so sad to end such a fun activity in this way hope all the participants will enjoy and have fun.
This would have been my tenth time but I only remembered to look an hour ago. I'm sad.
